Future Auggie Panel on Technology Expectations

What do future auggies expect from their courses, faculty and campus?

The Augsburg IT Department is sponsoring a future student panel to explore what technology future auggies expect. Come see a moderated panel where three incoming first year students will talk about what they expect from Augsburg’s technology.

Teenagers have grown up in a world where technology is everywhere and how they learn is infused with technology. Many K-12 systems have laptop programs, smartboards, and use tools like moodle. This sets an expectation and shapes how they learn — we need to understand this digital reality so we can help students succeed in the college environment. Come and hear from this panel and engage with them on questions you have about their digital reality.

Future Auggie Panel on Technology Expectations

submitted by krajewsk@augsburg.edu

Oren Gateway 200
Wednesday July 26, 2017
4:15PM – 5:00PM
Snacks will be provided.

What do future auggies expect from Augsburg when it comes to technology?

Schield Says New Standards Promote Statistical Literacy

submitted by schield@augsburg.edu

Milo Schield, Professor of Business Administration, had his invited editorial (GAISE 2016 Promotes Statistical Literacy) featured in a special Statistical Literacy issue of statistical education’s premier journal: SERJ. GAISE are the guidelines for teaching introductory statistics. In the GAISE 2016 update, multivariate data and confounding were added as important topics. Milo has argued that confounding, alternate explanations and hypothetical thinking are what connect statistics to the liberal arts. In his editorial, he asserted that by adding confounding this update is “the biggest change in statistical education in decades” and “has done more to advance the cause of statistical literacy than
any previous paper, book, group or committee.” According to Google Scholar, Milo’s papers have been cited over one thouand times. Milo was the principle investigator in the 2001 grant Augsburg received from the W. M. Keck Foundation to promote statistical literacy as an interdisciplinary curriculum.

Future Auggie Panel on Technology Expectations

submitted by krajewsk@augsburg.edu

Oren Gateway 200
Wednesday July 26, 2017
4:15PM – 5:00PM
Snacks will be provided.

What do future auggies expect from Augsburg when it comes to technology?

Donate Paper or Plastic Bags to Campus Kitchen

submitted by greena@augsburg.edu

Instead of recycling those paper or plastic bags taking up space in your house, bring them to Campus Kitchen! Every Saturday from now until November, we’ll be gleaning produce from the Mill City Farmer’s Market, packing it up into sample bags, and distributing it to elders in Cedar-Riverside. If you have *clean* paper or plastic grocery bags, please drop them off at the Campus Kitchen closet next to the elevator on the top floor of Christensen (near kitchen back entrance). We use 30-40 bags per week, so keep them coming!

(If you really want to recycle those plastic bags, though, you can take them back to a grocery store or Target)

On-campus Farmer’s Market Cancelled

submitted by greena@augsburg.edu

Because of low vendor interested and staff capacity this year, the West Bank Farmer’s Market has been cancelled. Even though we’ll miss the weekly lunch break with farmers and local vendors, we look forward to this opportunity to have some community conversations about food and food access over the coming months to see if we can re-group for next year. If you’re interested in being part of these conversations or sharing your thoughts about the on-campus farmer’s market, talk with Allyson (greena@augsburg.edu)! You can find days and times for other markets on the Homegrown Minneapolis site. You can also get fresh produce delivered to you on campus every Friday by signing up for a CSA share with Tangeltown Gardens! Contact Nell Gerhke (gehrken@augsburg.edu) for more info.

And if you were hoping to stock up on jam and granola from our local canned goods vendor, B’s Home Cannery, don’t worry – you an still get some! Allyson will have a box of blueberry, strawberry, strawberry-rhubarb, and rhubarb jams in 4-oz jars ($3.50), 8-oz jars ($4.50), and 16-oz jars ($5.50), and some quart jars of granola ($8) in her office starting next week. You can stop by and grab some anytime until they’re gone.

Thanks for your support of the market over the years! We look forward to whatever adventure comes out of this next year!

Battery Recycling is Back

submitted by greena@augsburg.edu

The battery recycling box is back on the ReUse table in lower level Christensen! While many locations no longer consider alkaline batteries to be household waste, since Minnesota has higher standards for hazardous waste, and Minneapolis and Hennepin County are still recycling them, Augsburg will commit to recycling them as well. You can drop off the following batteries at the ReUse table: alkaline or pile alkaline, button batteries, carbon zinc (CZn), lithium (Li), lithium-ion (Li-ion), mercuric oxide, nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), nickel zinc (NiZn), and zinc air.
