Des Moines University Information Session

Mexico: Summer study abroad program

Earn language, Art, Keystone, or Internship credit in Mexico this summer:
AUGSBURG CGEE IN MEXICO: LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN MEXICO

CGEE in Mexico offers five 3 1/2 week sessions (blocks) focusing on Spanish language and Mexican culture in which students can take one course per session, and take up to five courses throughout the summer. This community-based program includes homestays, a trip to Mexico City, optional weekend excursions, and numerous guest speakers designed to help students learn about history, culture, and contemporary struggles for peace, justice, and human rights.

Spanish language courses at all levels beginning to advanced, as well as specialized Spanish courses in Business Spanish, Spanish for Ministry, and Spanish for Healthcare Professionals can be combined with internships in those fields to create a truly customized summer experience.

2018 PROGRAM DATES
The summer is organized into five blocks, you may take anywhere from one to five blocks. Students who wish to take an internship must enroll for at least two blocks:
Block I: May 2-27
Block II: May 23-June 17 (KEY 490 offered only during Block II)
Block III: June 13-July 8
Block IV: July 5-29
Block V: July 25-August 19

Applications are due March 15, 2018

Scholarships are available!

Students eligible for Summer Pell Grants, may apply the summer grant funds to this program if they attend at least two Blocks.

Staff Senate is seeking nominations for the Auggie Pride Award! The Auggie Pride Award is given to staff members who have gone above and beyond to serve Augsburg and fulfill its mission and values. Reasons to acknowledge a staff member can include a variety of things, such as the completion of a project, the implementation of an innovative idea, or simply giving directions to a lost campus guest.

Volunteer Opportunity for Spanish Speakers

Judge Spanish Debate! No Prior Experience Needed

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a nonprofit of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming to over 750 students in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, including our nearly 100 Spanish Debate League students.

We’re looking for debate judges for 3 tournaments this spring:

Wednesday April 19th – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday May 3rd – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday May 16th – 3:30 to 7:30 PM

Judges will observe rounds conducted completely in Spanish, determine winners for each round, and provide comments to help students improve their reading, critical thinking and Spanish language skills.

Participation in debate helps students improve their academic skills, including reading comprehension and critical thinking, and increases their confidence. Be a part of creating these outcomes for our Spanish Debate League students!

Mexica New Year: Volunteer With ALAS

Mexica New Year: This family-friendly, cultural festival celebrates and honors the diverse beautiful cultures of indigenous peoples of the Twin Cities. Hosted by Indigenous Roots in partnership with local dance and drum circles, artists, community organizations and businesses.

COME AND HELP BY VOLUNTEERING WITH ALAS. Volunteers may be asked to help with tabling, clean up, set up, activity facilitator, etc.

Spring Blood Drive Donors Needed

Memorial Blood Center will be on campus for our annual spring blood drive on Wednesday 3/28 from 10 – 4 pm in the East Commons. Please consider make a donation and helping save lives. You can sign up for a donation time online at http://www.mbc.org/searchdrives and enter sponsor code 0027 or you can call the CWC office at 612-330-1707 to schedule a time.

Due to weather conditions & illness this year, the amount of blood donations coming in has been very low. Many blood drives have been canceled & the opportunities to donate have become slim. The need for blood is constant; we are currently urgent on types O negative & A negative, but all types are needed.

Tuesday, March 13th: Learn about Social Security

In a one-of-a-kind, special event: Rhonda Whiteneck, Public Affairs Specialist with the Social Security Administration will present a comprehensive look at Social Security benefits and the role they play in retirement. The presentation will include a look at how your age at retirement affects your benefits, who else is eligible to receive a benefit, and how you enroll. In addition, Rhonda will discuss Medicare Parts A, B, C and D, touching on penalties, creditable drug coverage and how Medicare affects HSA participation.

Not sure if you should attend? Are you planning to retire – soon or sometime in the future? Do you have parents, friends, etc. who will be retiring and could use a few pointers? Are you unsure how your and your spouse’s Medicare benefits coordinate? Do you have an HSA and wonder what will happen to it when you reach Medicare eligibility age? If you answered yes to any of these, this seminar is for you!​

Interfaith Engagement: a Palestinian Christian Perspective

Augsburg Faculty, Staff, and Students – you are invited to attend an evening of conversation with Bishop Munib Younan. In 2018, Bishop Younan retired as Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land and completed his 7 year term as President of the Lutheran World Federation. Bishop Younan is a global leader in inter-religious relationships and the pursuit of a just peace between Israel and Palestine.

This event, “Interfaith Engagement: a Palestinian Christian Perspective”, will take place on Thursday, March 22nd at 7:00 PM in Oren Gateway Center Room 100.
