CIC Institute in Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts

submitted by greenj@augsburg.edu

June 2-5, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) will offer the second of two institutes focused on Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts. This Institute is intended to address major issues that drive unrest on today’s campus, including protests directed at public policy, social inequity, bias, and identity that sometimes become disruptive or even violent. The Provost’s Office is hoping to send a team from Augsburg and has been working with a few faculty and staff on the application. Applications must include a proposal that outlines how we intend to use the experience, if we are selected to participate, on our campus. While we can only send four people, we want the proposal to reflect the broader interests and commitments of the community. The Provost invites members of the community to join her for a conversation on how this institute might be used to advance our commitments to inclusion, equity, and cultural competence at Augsburg.

A meeting is scheduled for TODAY, Nov. 8, from 12:00-1:00 pm in LIN 301. All are welcome — please feel free to bring your lunch! If Augsburg is accepted to participate in the Institute, additional open meetings will be held throughout the Spring, as we want the team’s work to help advance our collective goals.

Fix-It Clinic at Seward Montessori this Saturday

submitted by greena@augsburg.edu

Do you have something that is not working right, but you would like to
see working again? Whether you watched a bunch of YouTube videos and
tried fixing it yourself, threw your hands up in despair looking for
someone who could help (or after learning how much it would cost), or
just don’t know where to start, look no further! A bunch of eager and
skilled volunteers are coming to the Seward Montessori School cafeteria
this Saturday, November 10th, from noon to 3:30 p.m. for the next
Hennepin County Fix-It Clinic. They will be there to help you
troubleshoot and fix your non-working stuff, for free! It will be like
having a handy friend with some expertise in what you are having trouble
with, right there to help! The goal of this program is to divert from
the waste stream non-working items that people would like to keep using.
It has helped folks fix or figure out everything from mechanical monkey
toys and jewelry to microwaves and dehumidifiers. There will be a crew
of sewing specialists to help you replace broken zippers and mend
clothes, a team of electronics folks who are good with everything from
lamps to computers, and mechanical folks who have gotten paper
shredders, antique clocks, and sewing machines back in business. Please
help spread the word! Share the Facebook event at
https://www.facebook.com/events/163959367608830/ and find out more at
https://www.hennepin.us/fixitclinic, but be sure to stop in on Saturday
with your non-working stuff!
