Up to 40 percent of the food in the United States is never eaten. But at the same time, one in eight Americans struggles to put enough food on the table. This amounts to 21% of the U.S. agricultural water usage, and growing, processing, transporting, and disposing that uneaten food has an annual cost of $218 billion (National Resources Defense Council).
