On Behalf of Equity and Inclusion, Multicultural Life, and Augsburg University, we are excited to bring you the 39th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Convocation at 1 p.m. on January 19, 2026. This year’s theme is “Building Community: Who is My Neighbor?” The event will be held in person in the Hoversten Chapel and available online to livestream on Zoom. Please be on the lookout for the Zoom link later this week!

This year’s Keynote Speaker, Marcia Howard is an English teacher at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, where she has taught since 1998. She has been one of the key leaders in the George Floyd Square occupation and is currently the president of the teacher chapter of the Minneapolis Federation of Educators, Local 59.

My clinical research project is understanding how Tinder use impacts mental health outcomes, particularly self-esteem and body esteem. Then you should register for MUS408 Current and Future Issues in the Music Industry (MW 2:20-3:20 pm, Scott LeGere). This spring this topics course will focus on “Taylor Swift: The Myth of Genius and the Repeatability of Success.”

Don’t have any background in music business? No problem! We won’t be talking about the music business per se, but about resilience, courage, community, and other career development related issues. The material should be relevant and fun for a wide variety of students. Our text will be a recent release from Harvard Business Review, “There’s Nothing Like This: The Strategic Genius of Taylor Swift” along with some other materials.

TRIO Student Support Services Accepting Applications for Spring 2026

TRIO/SSS is pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for the Spring 2026 semester.

All Augsburg TRIO/SSS participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents or refugees pursuing their first bachelor’s degree. Participants must be incoming or currently enrolled Augsburg students. All program participants must demonstrate academic need for program services and meet one or more of the following criteria:

• Low-income student: a student whose family meets federal income eligibility guidelines, as verified by Augsburg.

• First-generation college student: a student where neither custodial parent/guardian has graduated from a four-year institution at the time of the student’s enrollment in the TRIO/SSS program.

• College student with documented disability, as verified by the CLASS office.

Students must also have a commitment to their college success. Applications will be available until January 15, or until the program is full. Space is limited. Priority will be given to first year students and transfer students.

Democracy in the Ashes: Voices of Resistance, Songs of Transformation

In a time when public education, democracy, community organizing, the arts, and critical pedagogy face extraordinary threats, this year’s conference, hosted here at Augsburg, invites educators, activists, artists, and community members to gather in solidarity. We recognize the ashes of programs dismantled, communities marginalized, and voices silenced. Yet, in these ashes, we also see the seeds of resistance and the songs of transformation. Across the world, oppressions continue to intensify on many fronts, but people continue to build mass struggles to survive and even (when at all possible) thrive.

We seek proposals for workshops and panels that actively engage participants in practical, hands-on exercises, critical dialogues, and performances that explore stories of resilience, resistance, community power, and diverse strategies for understanding and acting in the world.

This conference is a platform for sharing knowledge, experiences, and building new coalitions. We encourage proposals that not only address challenges but also celebrate innovative solutions and victories that bring joy and inspire change.

The SEED Coalition issues annual awards for community and civic engaged students, educators, and community partners. The Sabo Center is soliciting nominations for the following awards:

Student Civic Leadership Award (student): Recognizes a student or group who model civic responsibility and leadership through initiative, collaboration, and community building, integrating civic engagement into their college experience.

Civic Educator Award (staff or faculty): Recognizes a faculty or staff member who models civic responsibility by supporting students’ civic development and strengthening a culture of engagement on campus through their teaching, mentorship, or leadership.

Community Partner Award (community partner): Recognizes a community-based partner or organization that enriches both educational and community outcomes through sustained, reciprocal partnerships with a college or university.

Community Collaboration Award (student, staff, faculty, department, or community partner): Recognizes a project or initiative co-created by campus and community partners that showcases meaningful collaboration and exemplifies the campus’s civic and community engagement, contributing to both student learning and community well-being.

Individuals can self-nominate or be nominated by another person.

3rd Annual STEM Alumni Gathering

All current STEM students are invited to attend the 3rd Annual STEM Alumni Gathering which will take place on Thursday, February 12th from 5-7pm in Hagfors 150.

STEM alumni will be back on campus to share their stories of life after Augsburg. The evening will include time for an alumni panel, discipline specific table conversations, and unstructured mingling. All current STEM students are invited to come bring their questions and learn from the experiences of our alumni guests.

This spring this topics course will focus on “Taylor Swift: The Myth of Genius and the Repeatability of Success.”

Don’t have any background in music business? No problem! We won’t be talking about the music business per se, but about resilience, courage, community, and other career development related issues. TRIO/SSS is pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for the Spring 2026 semester.

All Augsburg TRIO/SSS participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents or refugees pursuing their first bachelor’s degree. Participants must be incoming or currently enrolled Augsburg students. All program participants must demonstrate academic need for program services and meet one or more of the following criteria:

• Low-income student: a student whose family meets federal income eligibility guidelines, as verified by Augsburg.

• First-generation college student: a student where neither custodial parent/guardian has graduated from a four-year institution at the time of the student’s enrollment in the TRIO/SSS program.

• College student with documented disability, as verified by the CLASS office.

Students must also have a commitment to their college success. Applications will be available until January 15, or until the program is full. Space is limited. Priority will be given to first year students and transfer students.

Research Opportunity: Muslim Students and Islamophobia

As-salamualaikum! My name is Sana Khan and I am currently a clinical psychology doctoral study student at Augsburg University. I am conducting a research study about how the mental health and religiosity of Muslim college students is impacted by Islamophobia and I would love to have you be a part of my study! The study will consist of an initial screener to make sure eligibility criteria is met and then scheduling an interview in which I ask you questions about your demographics and experience as a Muslim college student as related to Islam, religiosity, and Islamophobia. The interview should take approximately 25 minutes to 35 minutes to complete. We will not have package deliveries during Winter Break. Shipping/Receiving will be open our regular hours (weekdays 10am to 3pm), but will not be delivering packages around campus. If you order supplies please come to Shipping/Receiving to pick up when you receive the email from us letting you know your package has come in.

We do not have storage space for a large number of packages and can only keep items for two weeks. Please let us know if you are expecting any perishable, temperature sensitive or living packages so arrangements can be made. We are not able to refrigerate packages in Shipping/Receiving. • First-generation college student: a student where neither custodial parent/guardian has graduated from a four-year institution at the time of the student’s enrollment in the TRIO/SSS program.

• College student with documented disability, as verified by the CLASS office.

Students must also have a commitment to their college success. Applications will be available until January 15, or until the program is full. Space is limited. Priority will be given to first year students and transfer students.

The SEED Coalition issues annual awards for community and civic engaged students, educators, and community partners. The Sabo Center is soliciting nominations for the following awards:

Student Civic Leadership Award (student): Recognizes a student or group who model civic responsibility and leadership through initiative, collaboration, and community building, integrating civic engagement into their college experience.

Civic Educator Award (staff or faculty): Recognizes a faculty or staff member who models civic responsibility by supporting students’ civic development and strengthening a culture of engagement on campus through their teaching, mentorship, or leadership.

Community Partner Award (community partner): Recognizes a community-based partner or organization that enriches both educational and community outcomes through sustained, reciprocal partnerships with a college or university.

Community Collaboration Award (student, staff, faculty, department, or community partner): Recognizes a project or initiative co-created by campus and community partners that showcases meaningful collaboration and exemplifies the campus’s civic and community engagement, contributing to both student learning and community well-being.

Individuals can self-nominate or be nominated by another person.
