“INTERFAITH @ CEDAR COMMONS: LOST IN TRANSLATION”
This Thursday, Sept 28th 6:30-8:30pm
Religious language can carry heavy meaning. Some words hold sweet memories or deep significance for us, while other words might be associated with painful experiences, exclusion or just feel flat and dead.
Sometimes the language of our own cultural context does not translate clearly to people outside of our tradition. Even those within a religious tradition often don’t have access to the languages in which sacred texts were originally written. How much meaning is lost in translation?
Join us for a meal and an evening of discussion around the language of faith and all the complexity of communicating about deeply held values and beliefs.
Do you need to be a “person of faith” to come? Absolutely not. We welcome anyone with interest in conversation about how faith/spirituality shape our lives and intersect with the issues we care about.
Hosted by: Interfaith @ Cedar Commons organizer team and the Augsburg Interfaith Scholars.
(Cedar Commons, part of Augsburg, is at 2001 Riverside Ave. S – below Trinity’s offices)

New copiers will be installed around campus the week of August 14. If you have a Canon copier in your area, it will be replaced by a Sharp copier. I think you will like the pull-out keyboard (in addition to the touchscreen) if you scan to other e-mail addresses and add a subject or notes to your scan. I think you will also appreciate the ease of using your fob to access the copier rather than entering a code, and having a one-touch button to scan to your e-mail. Training will be provided at the machine as soon as it is installed. You can share that training with others in your area who are not available or call the Copy Center at x1054 afterward to schedule follow-up training later.
Installation schedule:
Monday, August 14 – Christensen Center, Urness, Mortensen
Tuesday, August 15 – Lindell Library, Oren Gateway Center
Wednesday, August 16 – Anderson Hall, Memorial Hall
Thursday, August 17 – Science, Sverdrup
Friday, August 18 – Foss, Music, Si-Melby, Kennedy, Ice Arena, Luther Seminary, and Rochester
Note that the Copy Center will be getting new machines too, so there may be a time early in the week where response time to your copy requests may be delayed.

This summer the Augsburg community will have the wonderful opportunity to purchase fresh produce that will be delivered to Augsburg College in the form of a CSA share beginning mid-June. The share will contain a variety of seasonally appropriate produce. One can expect to find treats such as basil, carrots, cilantro, sweet corn, potatoes, peppers and tomatoes at some point over the summer. Delivery begins mid-June and lasts for 18 weeks or through mid-October. The food is grown on a 140 acre farm near Plato, MN. Purchasing local produce helps to support the local economy. The farmers who grow this produce are devoted to using only natural botanical and biological methods to control pests. They use other sustainable farming practices such as biodiversity, crop rotation, cover cropping and natural fertilizers to deliver healthy and nutritious produce to the table. More information about the operation and where to order can be found at https://www.tangletowngardens.com/tangletown-gardens/csa/

Event featuring 2 amazing artists from Honduras… Melissa Cardoza and Karla Lara.
Friday, April 21st 1:50pm-3:00pm, Foss Studio
Melissa Cardoza’s book 13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance tells thirteen stories of women who joined the resistance to the U.S. backed 2009 coup d’etat. Melissa is an an afro-indigenous fearless journalist, poet, writer, and feminist organizer from Honduras.
Melissa will be touring with her fellow member of the Honduran Red de Defensoras or network of women rights defenders and beloved jazz/folk protest singer Karla Lara, who appears in one of the book’s stories and has been an icon and sharp voice for the resistance. Both of the women were close friends of Berta Cáceres, the Honduran indigenous leader and organizer of COPINH who was assassinated for her work in defense of the Lenca people and against patriarchy, capitalism and racism. This book and this tour are dedicated to Berta.
Review of the book by Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza:
“13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance by Melissa Cardoza is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about the many contours of Honduran feminists fighting for self-determination and dignity. These stories of bravery, of struggle and pain, and ultimately of a resilience rooted in a love for freedom will grip your heart. Cardoza is brilliant in storytelling, and ensures that, in memory of our sister Berta Caceres, feminisms are three dimensional and span multiple experiences—trans, Black, elderly, and more. The lessons contained in these stories offer important reflections for all revolutionaries.”

Hi Auggies and Community,
I am walking in the commencement ceremony this spring and I am in a bit of a tough situation. I invited 8 relatives (some from out of town who have purchased airplane tickets) who want to attend the commencement ceremony to support and celebrate my accomplishments. I need four more commencement tickets to accommodate my family members so they can come to the ceremony. In the past there has typically been extra tickets available for students in this situation but there seems to be a large amount of students who are participating in the ceremony this year so there has not been any extra tickets available as of yet or possibly not at all. I invited more relatives than I had tickets with the understanding that there would be more tickets available as it had been stated in multiple emails and even on the commencement site. Anyways, my ask is that if someone has one or more extra tickets, that they share them with me so that my family can be a part of one of the biggest moments of my life. If you have extras or know someone that does, please email me at walkerdd@augsburg.edu.
Thank you,
Diamonique Walker

In the midst of the Egyptian Arab Spring, Bassem Youssef creates the satirical show, “Al Bernameg,” which quickly becomes the most viewed television program in the Middle East, with 30 million viewers per episode. But, in a country where free speech is not settled law, his show becomes as controversial as it is popular. Despite increasing danger, Bassem employs comedy, not violence, to comment on hypocrisy in media, politics, and religion. Tickling Giants follows the “Al Bernameg” team as they discover democracy is not easily won.

Auditions for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir will be held in the Music Building (Choir Room – M3) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24, 25 and 26.
HISTORY: The choir, now in its 84th year, is one of Augsburg’s oldest ongoing organizations. For the past 37 years it has been the anchor ensemble of the college’s Advent Vespers which is attended by some 8000 people each year.
THIS NEXT YEAR: Mark Sedio (’76) will continue as conductor for this forthcoming academic year. In addition to his role at Augsburg, Sedio is Cantor (Director of Music) at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis. He is a widely published composer, choral and organ clinician, stand-up comedian, teacher and a specialist in multi-cultural/world music. This forthcoming year the choir will not only focus on choral repertoire from Europe (i.e. Iceland, Slovakia, Germany, Estonia), the United States and Latin America – but will partner with the National Lutheran Choir and Palestinian ethnomusicologist Zafer Tawil for a program highlighting music of the Middle East and North Africa.
SCHEDULE: The Augsburg Choir meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:30 to 6:00 (usually 5:40 to accommodate evening classes).
WHO? YOU! Membership in the choir (by audition) is open to ANY and ALL Augsburg undergraduate students – regardless of discipline/major. Over the years we’ve worked out schedules to include those involved in athletics (football, soccer, lacrosse) and theater.
HOW? Sign-up sheets for auditions will be available at the CHOIR DESK in Christensen Hall (10:30 to 11:30) and will then be posted outside the choir room in the music building. No preparation necessary.
