Greenhouse First Friday—May 2

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Friday of every month this semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

The last First Friday of the semester is this week, May 2, 12pm—3pm. The greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of the Hagfors Center.

Fundraising for Twin Cities Therapeutic Tattooing Fund

The Twin Cities Therapeutic Tattoo Fund is a group began by Interfaith Scholars with the purpose of fundraising for financial aid for those seeking tattoos to cover up scars, branding tattoos, gang tattoos, etc. by setting up a discretionary fund that partnered artists can draw from in place of payment for clients seeking those services. Currently, we partner with Ms. Tiffany at Weird Ink Society.

We will be tabling in the lobby of Christensen Center TODAY, April 30 from 11:00-1:00. Please come by to learn more about what we’re doing, donate, and receive some amazing products in return for your generous support!

Prepare for Your Career in Health Care With HPE 240

This is a 2-credit, fully asynchronous online course offered the first 7 weeks of summer (May 19 – July 3). Join us on Tuesday, May 6, from 1:00-3:30 PM as we de-stress by making bad art. Where Will Your Mail Go This Summer?

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (on May 23, 2025) we will close all student campus boxes unless they responded to the End of Year survey. If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please fill out this survey

Before the fall semester starts we will reassign campus boxes to all residential students. Without completing the survey, it will most likely be a different number.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail. Packages must be looked at case by case. Some USPS will allow forwarding. (Reply to the Augsburg package email and we will look at that package.) Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will not be forwarded. We can also only forward to USA addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted. Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Augsburg is classified as a business so you will not be able to do so through the US Post Office itself. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option, it is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the USPS or Augsburg University, just with the Mailroom.

New Staff Position: Talent Acquisition Specialist

Summary of Position

The Talent Acquisition Specialist is a key campus partner to research, develop, and implement effective recruiting and staffing strategies to attract a diverse pool of qualified and capable talent for the institution. This position is a dynamic and engaging role that serves as the “face” of Augsburg for applicants throughout the hiring lifecycle.

Primary Responsibilities

– Develops, facilitates, and implements all phases of the recruitment process.
– Collaborates with department leaders to identify and draft detailed and accurate job descriptions and hiring criteria.
– Identifies and implements efficient and effective recruiting methods and strategies based on the available role, industry standards, and the needs of the institution.
– In partnership with hiring managers, creates and revises job descriptions.
– Leads job posting and advertisement processes.
– Screens applications and ensures selected candidates meet position qualifications.
– Schedules interviews; oversees preparation of interview questions and other hiring and selection materials.
– Partners with the interview process, attending and conducting interviews with managers, directors, and other stakeholders.
– Collaborates with the hiring manager and/or other human resource staff during the offer process, identifying and recommending salary range, start dates, and other pertinent details.
– Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and University policies.

Additional Responsibilities

– Attends and participates in job fairs and recruitment events.
– Facilitates bi-weekly New Staff Orientation sessions and conducts campus tours.
– Facilitates training sessions related to best practices in talent acquisition.
– May participate in the Exit Interview process.
– Other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).

Work Environment and Physical Demands

– This is a hybrid position working four (4) days per week on campus with one (1) remote work day depending on department and University needs. The hybrid schedule will begin after successful completion of the new employee engagement period and once all onboarding and orientation has been successfully completed.
– Extensive computer and phone use.
– Extensive interaction (verbal, written, face-to-face, and remote) with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

Do you have a great idea for a TV show, but you’re not sure how to get it on the page? Do you have a script in the drawer that’s begging to be finished, but something just isn’t quite right?

Throughout the year, Augsburg University and Playwrights’ Center, a Twin-Cities-based national organization supporting playwrights and new play development, partner to offer online, accredited playwriting and television-writing courses, taught by today’s leading writers in the field to students all over the country.

This three-hour weekly class is designed as an online workshop for students who are interested in learning the art and craft of writing for television. Students will study the fundamentals of professional writing for broadcast, cable, and digital platforms. They will explore the principles of television series creation by developing a compelling premise and executing a viable, character-driven pilot script.

Recently, multiple Augsburg accounts were compromised and used to send phishing messages to members of our community. Thank you to the many employees who quickly reported these messages — your vigilance helps protect all of us.

As a reminder:

-Never submit your password or MFA (multi-factor authentication) credentials through a Google Form or any unofficial site. Augsburg will never ask for your login information this way.

-Do not approve MFA requests unless you are actively trying to log into an Augsburg system. An unexpected MFA prompt could be a sign someone else is attempting to access your account.

-If you receive a suspicious message, contact the sender through a separate, trusted method (such as phone) before responding or clicking any links.

-Be cautious and verify before providing any personal information.

Please remember that HR and IT do not send campus-wide announcements for every phishing attempt. Your vigilance and prompt reporting are critical in helping us respond effectively.

The Music department is seeking to hire one student employee to serve as a student assistant and orchestra manager.

Duration: Academic Year 2025-26, from September-April, approximately 3-5 hours/week. May include some training hours in April 2023 with the existing student manager.

The student manager acts as an essential coordinator and manager of choir performances and off-campus trips in collaboration with the Fine Arts Coordinator and the Conductor. In particular, the manager acts as the main choral-student contact for Advent Vespers, coordinating with faculty/staff, other student managers, and campus ministry as needed.

Job Duties
1) 1-2 hrs/wk—Rehearsal/Manager Duties.
These hours vary each week and generally take place before/after rehearsals
• Setup rehearsal space and coordinate performance setup and strike.
• Make ensemble announcements, etc..
• Record absences and report to conductor.
• Aid conductor with tasks and projects as assigned.
• Collect, proof, and ensure timely printing of programs.
• Collect all necessary student forms.
• Clean choir room following rehearsals and as needed throughout the year.
• Compose and mail thank you notes and other communications as needed
Library Duties.
• Communicate with conductor to determine print music needs of ensemble.
• Photocopy music, assemble and distribute folders to ensemble.
• Collect, sort, and file music in the cage in coordination with the Music Department Librarian(s)
2) 2-4 hrs/wk—Music Department Work.
A work schedule must be determined at the start of each semester.
• Work on projects as assigned by the Fine Arts Coordinator and/or the Music Administrative Assistant.
• May occasionally be needed as an usher or stage manager for events.
• If no projects are assigned, other duties (such as library/cage work) should be completed.
• If all other tasks are up-to-date, you may do homework during your scheduled working hours; however,
you must remain available in the music office area to assist with projects.

Interpersonal Communication focuses on the dynamics of human interaction through verbal and nonverbal messages, with an emphasis on factors that build relationships and help to overcome communication barriers. Effectively communicating with others is essential to achieving success in our personal and professional lives. However, communicating with others can be challenging and leave us feeling frustrated, confused, or disappointed. As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (on May 23, 2025) we will close all student campus boxes unless they responded to the End of Year survey. If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please fill out this survey

Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will not be forwarded. We can also only forward to USA addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted. Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Augsburg is classified as a business so you will not be able to do so through the US Post Office itself. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option, it is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the USPS or Augsburg University, just with the Mailroom.

The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Friday of every month this semester, from noon to 3pm. Do you have a great idea for a TV show, but you’re not sure how to get it on the page? Do you have a script in the drawer that’s begging to be finished, but something just isn’t quite right?

Throughout the year, Augsburg University and Playwrights’ Center, a Twin-Cities-based national organization supporting playwrights and new play development, partner to offer online, accredited playwriting and television-writing courses, taught by today’s leading writers in the field to students all over the country.

This three-hour weekly class is designed as an online workshop for students who are interested in learning the art and craft of writing for television. Students will study the fundamentals of professional writing for broadcast, cable, and digital platforms. They will explore the principles of television series creation by developing a compelling premise and executing a viable, character-driven pilot script.

The Twin Cities Therapeutic Tattoo Fund is a group began by Interfaith Scholars with the purpose of fundraising for financial aid for those seeking tattoos to cover up scars, branding tattoos, gang tattoos, etc. by setting up a discretionary fund that partnered artists can draw from in place of payment for clients seeking those services. Currently, we partner with Ms. Tiffany at Weird Ink Society.

Key Dates for Course Material Adoptions and Faculty eCampus Training

As previously announced (see link, below), Augsburg is onboarding two new partners this spring to support our campus store. eCampus is our new partner for course materials. To prepare for the transition from Barnes & Noble to eCampus, please note the following important dates:

1) Initial faculty training: In preparation for switching to the new system, eCampus will conduct a training on its online adoption platform on May 15 at 1 p.m., as part of the Center for Teaching and Learning’s Days in May schedule. The session will be recorded, and additional sessions will be scheduled at later dates.

2) Deadline for Summer Time 2 and Fall adoptions: The best way to ensure eCampus will have sufficient time to source course materials for your Summer Time 2 and Fall courses is to ensure your course material adoptions are SUBMITTED IN THE EXISTING BARNES & NOBLE SYSEM BY MAY 21. Barnes & Noble will provide eCampus a data file of all adoptions submitted by that date, which eCampus will use to prepare for Summer Time 2 and Fall.

We are still working to confirm when the eCampus adoption portal will be available for use, but it is NOT recommended that you wait for that system to go live to submit Summer Time 2 or Fall adoptions, as that may result in insufficient lead time for eCampus to source the required materials.

Minneapolis Reckoning—Summer Book Club

As we approach the fifth anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, Faculty Development is pleased to announce an upcoming book club event co-sponsored with the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of Sociology. The featured book will be the recently published Minneapolis Reckoning: Race, Violence, and the Politics of Policing in America (2024), by sociologist Michelle Phelps.

In the book, Phelps profiles how Minneapolis embraced police reform after the Black Lives Matter protests against police violence in 2014; and yet in 2020, we were rocked by the murder of George Floyd at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers. As a result, Minneapolis became a national emblem for the failures of police reform. This book “shows how the dualized meaning of the police—as both the promise of state protection and the threat of state violence—creates the complex politics of policing that thwart change. Phelps’s account of the city’s struggles over what constitutes real accountability, justice, and safety offers a vivid picture of the possibilities and limits of challenging police power today.”

Copies of the book will be available during Days in May and participants will have all summer to read it in preparation for small group discussions that will be held during the CTL Back to School program in late August. YST 210: Rethinking Children and Youth

Society often expects children and youth to be seen and not heard. This course will develop an understanding of children and youth that will allow us to engage them as assets and agents of positive change.

This class is great for future youth workers, social workers, educators, coaches, and youth mentors!

Name That Electric Utility Cart—Vote Now

Thanks to the ADSG Environmental Action Committee, Augsburg was able to purchase a Max-8 EV electric utility cart for the grounds crew this year. But this zippy machine needs a name!

Attendees at the Earth Day Sustainability Stories event on Tuesday submitted ideas for names, and now it’s time to vote. Choose your favorite from the submissions and vote by Friday at 5 p.m. at the link below. The winner will be announced next week.
