Teaching With Graphic Novels Workshop—September 29

Have you ever wanted to use graphic novels or comic books in your courses but aren’t sure where to start? Join us on September 29th, from 12:20pm–1:00pm on the first floor of Lindell Library for the Teaching With Graphic Novels Workshop led by professor Mary Lowe to learn how she incorporates graphic novels into her courses and how you can do the same. This workshop will be directed at faculty, but staff and students interested in education are encouraged to attend as well.

URGO Academic Year Research Applications open September 3 to October 10

Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research over the academic year. URGO has limited funding for academic year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member.
Please note that applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and funds will be awarded as they are available. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible.

First-Generation Survey for Augsburg Faculty and Staff

In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day (Nov. 8), Augsburg will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 3. These events will be geared to students, but all of the university community is welcome to attend. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

In addition to this programming, we’re asking faculty and staff to complete this brief First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey. The information collected will be used to create ongoing resources and support for first-generation students here at Augsburg. Please provide as much information as you’re comfortable sharing. NOTE: This is the same survey we released previous years, so if you already submitted a response, no need to do so again!

Invitation to Participate in Research: Tinder Use and Mental Health Outcomes

My name is Evan Bloyer, and I am a graduate student in the Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology program here at Augsburg University. My clinical research project is understanding how Tinder use impacts mental health outcomes, particularly self-esteem and body esteem. New Student Position: Student: University Events Front Desk Assistant

Events Front Desk Primary responsibilities include:

  • Staffing the front desk of the University Events Office
  • Greeting guests to the department
  • Answering the office’s phone and assisting clients as necessary
  • Scheduling campus meeting and event space using our scheduling program and current processes
  • Assisting with the development of rental agreements and other event paperwork
  • Coordinating with set-up and AV staff for event request and set up needs
  • Checking email regularly
  • Other duties as assigned

Orange Shirt Day—September 30

Orange Shirt day is recognized on Sept. 30th annually and is a national day of remembrance of those who survived Indian boarding schools and those who did not come home. This year the Augsburg Indigenous Student Association is providing orange shirt pins for Augsburg students, staff, and faculty. Orange shirt pins will be available from Sept. 23-30 in the Oyate Commons (Lower Level Christensen Center). Any questions can be directed to waukaug@augsburg.edu.

Rev. Robert Two Bulls in Chapel on September 26

Rev. Canon Robert Two Bulls, a member of the Oglala Nation and the Missioner for the Department of Indian Work for the Episcopal Church in Minnesota, is our first speaker this fall for our “Living Stories” series. He will tell his story of commitment at noon on September 26 in Hoversten Chapel. “Living Stories” is a series co-hosted by the Department of Religion and Philosophy, Augsburg Interfaith Institute, and Campus Ministry. Later in the fall we will hear from Koji Acquavia, a Soto Zen priest and teacher at the Clouds in Water Zen Center; and Muntadher Aljabery who serves the Shia Muslim community of Minneapolis, Minnesota as a resident Imam.

Blessing of the Animals on October 2

We will offer a blessing of the animals in Hoversten Chapel on October 2 at 11:50 am. You are invited to bring your pet or emotional support or service animal to chapel that day or send a photo of your pet by September 29 to Janice Dames at dames@augsburg.edu to be included in the slideshow. On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated. October 4 was originally chosen for the blessing of the animals because it is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment.

She considers herself fortunate to mentor, learn from, and celebrate students across every part of their journey here at Augsburg. Her personal story is informed by an interest in empowering those around me and helping students uncover their unique inclinations that drive them toward a life of fulfillment and joy. Disabled Student Looking for PCA

Hi, my name is Zander. I am a Senior, and I am disabled and in a wheelchair. I am looking for a backup PCA to help out when my regular PCA can’t. You do not need to be trained to be a PCA, as I will provide all of the training you will need, as it is not that technical of a job. My PCA comes to my dorm every day to help me with certain tasks that I cannot complete in a timely manner.. You would come when my main PCA needs a day off or can’t make it that day for different reasons, and help me with the tasks that they would usually help me with on that day. Some of the tasks you would do daily are refilling water bottles, refilling humidifiers, and making a bed. Expect this to take 15 or 30 minutes out of your day. Then, on top of that, I also require assistance with bathing once a week. Expect that to take an hour once a week. This job comes with very flexible hours. I will tell you what day I would need you, and you would pick a time on that day that you would come. There is no set required time that you have to come each day. The rate for this job will be $13 an hour; however, you are usually not there longer than an hour, so it usually turns out to $13 per day.
