October Is Cyber Security Awareness Month – It’s Training Time

October is cyber security awareness month. Every faculty and staff member has an important role to play in protecting the security of the data kept by the University.

In our digital lives data is at the heart of it. Augsburg has been trusted with data on our students, employees, alumni and donors. Your login information provides a key into Augsburg and that key needs to be protected. Also, as part of Augsburg’s Title IV financial aid requirements and insurance requirements employees must complete training twice a year for Augsburg to be compliant.

You will see notification emails coming this week from system@litmos.com which is the training platform.

The content should take you less than 30 minutes to complete.

On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated. October 4 was originally chosen for the blessing of the animals because it is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment.

Disabled Student Looking for a Backup PCA

Hi, my name is Zander. I am a Senior, and I am disabled and in a wheelchair. I am looking for a backup PCA to help out when my regular PCA can’t. You do not need to be trained to be a PCA, as I will provide all of the training you will need, as it is not that technical of a job. My PCA comes to my dorm every day to help me with certain tasks that I cannot complete in a timely manner.. You would come when my main PCA needs a day off or can’t make it that day for different reasons, and help me with the tasks that they would usually help me with on that day. Some of the tasks you would do daily are refilling water bottles, refilling humidifiers, and making a bed. Expect this to take 15 or 30 minutes out of your day. Then, on top of that, I also require assistance with bathing once a week. Expect that to take an hour once a week. This job comes with very flexible hours. I will tell you what day I would need you, and you would pick a time on that day that you would come. There is no set required time that you have to come each day. The rate for this job will be $13 an hour; however, you are usually not there longer than an hour, so it usually turns out to $13 per day. Each session will be different, but it is not necessary for every person to attend every session. Please ensure that at least two members from your department or team attend each event.

Lunch will be provided so please register for the October 20 session by October 6.

Greenhouse First Friday—October 3

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Friday of every month this semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

The next First Friday of the semester is this week, October 3, 12pm—3pm. The greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of the Hagfors Center.

The Augsburg University Writing Center is open and be ready to support your writing this semester! Our current hours are Sunday–Thursday, 5–8 p.m. (in-person only), with plans to expand our hours in October. We are located across from Advising on the second floor of the library.

At the Writing Center, trained peer tutors work with writers at all levels and in all disciplines. Whether you are just beginning an assignment and need help generating ideas, in the middle of a draft and looking for feedback on structure or clarity, or polishing a final version before submitting, our tutors are here to help. They can also support you in developing stronger arguments, refining your style, citing sources, and building effective revision strategies.
You can bring in any kind of writing project—course essays, research papers, lab reports, resumes, personal statements, creative pieces, or even application materials. No matter the stage of the process or the type of writing, tutors provide constructive, supportive feedback that is focused on helping you grow as a writer.

URGO Academic Year Research Applications open September 3 to October 10

Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research over the academic year. URGO has limited funding for academic year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member.
Please note that applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and funds will be awarded as they are available. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible.
