Critical Language Scholarship

Eligibility:
First-year Students, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors; US Citizens

Deadline:
Tuesday, November 18, 2025

Purpose:
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State that offers fully-funded overseas language and cultural immersion programs for American undergraduate and graduate students. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides study opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning.
The CLS Spark Program is a virtual opportunity that offers introductory language instruction in a number of CLS languages. Spark prioritizes students without access to instruction in the target language at their home institutions, and participation in Spark includes automatic consideration as a semi-finalist for the CLS summer language student (if the Spark participant applies for it). The critical languages supported currently include Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili

Application Process
CLS has great resources available to help you understand the program and application process and write strong essays. Be sure to consult them! Prospective applicants should consult with the campus representative as early as possible. No institutional endorsement is necessary, but Prof. deVries provides support for the application process.

Interested in Working with Young People? – Consider a Youth Studies Minor Class This Spring

This course will provide students with practical perspectives and experiences in work with children and youth from interdisciplinary perspectives. We will cover both theoretical frameworks for liberatory and culturally grounded work with youth and focused examinations of different types of youth work. Throughout the course, we will consider how our own positionality and experiences affect our engagements in work with youth and children.

Participate in a Research Study About Islamophobia

As-salamualaikum! My name is Sana Khan and I am currently a clinical psychology doctoral study student at Augsburg University. I am conducting a research study about how the mental health and religiosity of Muslim college students is impacted by Islamophobia and I would love to have you be a part of my study! The study will consist of an initial screener to make sure eligibility criteria is met and then scheduling an interview in which I ask you questions about your demographics and experience as a Muslim college student as related to Islam, religiosity, and Islamophobia. The interview should take approximately 45 minutes to an hour to complete. To thank you for your participation, upon completion of your interview, there will be an option at the end for you to enter your information to receive a $10 Visa gift card. Day of the Dead Student Community Exhibit at Lindell Library, November 1–21

The Augsburg community is invited to visit and view a student-led community exhibit to commemorate the departed for Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). Exhibit items include images of loved ones, cultural artifacts, related readings from the library, and (starting on Thursday, November 6), student personal letters to their departed. The community exhibit will remain open through November 21.

This project was facilitated by Lindell Library liaison to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies (CRES). For more information, please contact Kira Cronin-Hennessy at cronink@augsburg.edu.

Happiness Gym at the Mixed Blood Theatre, November 6–December 7, 2025

The Mixed Blood Theatre cordially invites you and the Augsburg Community to attend our production of The Happiness Gym – A National New Play Network Rolling Premiere, based on an original concept by Ken Weitzman! Co-directed by Alejandro Tey and Mark Valdez. This production uses the tenets of positive psychology to craft exercises that engage the Twin Cities community in uses of good news, gratitude, and connection.

Join the Sabo Center Community Engagement Council’s Community Changemakers and the East Phillips Neighborhood Institute for a series of talks and workshops. EPNI staff will share their skills, knowledge and experiences and introduce opportunities for getting involved with community building and movement work.

Kieran Morris is a community organizer, farmer and canoe guide, specializing in Green and Blue work, bringing practical skills alongside traditional knowledge and grassroots mentality to connect people with the land and water. At EPNI, Kieran coordinates the Outdoor Farm project, which grows produce and medicine at sites across East Phillips, and hosts free educational workshops. In his spare time, he writes fiction and poetry, hunts and fishes, wanders with his partner, draws landscapes, practices and teaches a couple of martial arts and struggles to learn blues guitar.

Stay tuned for a call for project proposals with EPNI in December! Funding and support will be available for course engagements, events, campus projects and whatever else you might dream up with the amazing team of peeps who work with EPNI.

Documentary on Policing in Minneapolis with the filmmakers – TONIGHT

Please join us for an evening showing of the brand new Twin Cities Public Television documentary Paradox: Echoes of Reform & the Minneapolis Police (https://www.tpt.org/paradox-echoes-reform-minneapolis-police/), hosted by Augsburg’s own Michael Lansing and featuring Daniel Bergin, filmmaker, Twin Cities Public Television executive producer, and historian. The film–a compelling blend of deep research, candid interviews, and rare archival footage–explores the history of police reform in Minneapolis.  It illustrates how mayoral politics, community activism, and police union pushback shaped the city’s trajectory as well as what is at stake for the future of public safety.

Selections from the documentary shown, with Bergin and Lansing available for conversation during and after the showing. Teachers might consider using this as an assignment for their classes!

The documentary will be shown in Sci 123 at 5:30pm on November 5th.

This event is hosted by the Augsburg Center for Teaching and Learning, Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship, Office of Faculty Development, and the History Department.

Greenhouse First Friday: November 7

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Friday of every month this semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

The next First Friday of the semester is this week, November 7, 12pm—3pm. The greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of the Hagfors Center.

Polar H10 Heart Rate Monitor Chest Strap – ANT + Bluetooth, Waterproof HR Sensor

Are you interested in tracking your exercise, workouts, heartrate and progress to greater fitness? The Polar chest strap does it all and syncs everything to your phone via the Polar app. This is barely used, practically new, still in the box. I also have an older used one that I just put new batteries in, not in a box with a size small strap. The new Polar device still in the box is a medium. New it cost $104. I am selling for $80. I am selling the older used but still working Polar heart rate monitor for $40

Disabled Student Looking for PCA

Hi, my name is Zander. I am a Senior, and I am disabled and in a wheelchair. I am looking for a backup PCA to help out when my regular PCA can’t. You do not need to be trained to be a PCA, as I will provide all of the training you will need, as it is not that technical of a job. My PCA comes to my dorm every day to help me with certain tasks that I cannot complete in a timely manner.. You would come when my main PCA needs a day off or can’t make it that day for different reasons, and help me with the tasks that they would usually help me with on that day. Some of the tasks you would do daily are refilling water bottles, refilling humidifiers, and making a bed. Expect this to take 15 or 30 minutes out of your day. Then, on top of that, I also require assistance with bathing once a week. Expect that to take an hour once a week. This job comes with very flexible hours. I will tell you what day I would need you, and you would pick a time on that day that you would come. There is no set required time that you have to come each day. The rate for this job will be $13 an hour; however, you are usually not there longer than an hour, so it usually turns out to $13 per day.
