Interested in Working with Young People? Consider a Youth Studies Minor Class This Spring

This course will provide students with practical perspectives and experiences in work with children and youth from interdisciplinary perspectives. We will cover both theoretical frameworks for liberatory and culturally grounded work with youth and focused examinations of different types of youth work. Throughout the course, we will consider how our own positionality and experiences affect our engagements in work with youth and children.

Why a Youth Studies Minor?

This minor prepares you to work with and advocate for youth more effectively. You will develop knowledge and skills for working with young people from a variety of professions, including:

Capitol Pathways Program – Paid Internships at the State Capitol – Applications Due November 13

Capitol Pathways is a paid spring internship program for college students. With the long-term goal of making Minnesota state government and policymaking more representative of our diverse communities, this program provides students leadership, legislative and career readiness training alongside an immersive internship experience with an organization working in policy during the legislative session. This is a spring internship from January – May, 2025.

Invitation to Participate in Research: Tinder Use and Mental Health Outcomes

My name is Evan Bloyer, and I am a graduate student in the Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology program here at Augsburg University. My clinical research project is understanding how Tinder use impacts mental health outcomes, particularly self-esteem and body esteem. I have received Augsburg University’s IRB approval and am able to collect data from eligible participants. To participate, please click on the link below. Mental Health Survey

First Generation College Celebration Week – November 3-8

Augsburg celebrates first–generation students, faculty and staff this week. First-Generation College Celebration Day is celebrated annually on Nov. 8 to commemorate the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Federal TRIO/ programs were created as part of the HEA to promote postsecondary access, retention and completion. The term “first-generation college student” was introduced by the TRIO community in the late 1970’s. A first-generation college student is typically defined as a student whose parents or guardians never earned a four-year bachelor’s degree. The Council for Opportunity in Education (COE), in partnership with NASPA, initiated the national first-generation college celebration.

Augsburg’s celebration will include a series of events from Nov.3-8. All in the Augsburg community are invited to celebrate. During the kick-off in the Christensen Center on Monday, we will have placards and buttons for folks who identify as first-generation and for those who support first-generation students. We also encourage staff and faculty to fill out the First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey: https://forms.gle/zzTmXfK4QQoFDmoE6.

Students will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for Sony Wireless Premium Noise Canceling Headphones. Students will receive one entry for each event they attend, and can enter the drawing by scanning a QR code at the event.

Seeking Muslim Research Study Participants

As-salamualaikum! My name is Sana Khan and I am currently a clinical psychology doctoral study student at Augsburg University. I am conducting a research study about how the mental health and religiosity of Muslim college students is impacted by Islamophobia and I would love to have you be a part of my study! The study will consist of an initial screener to make sure eligibility criteria is met and then scheduling an interview in which I ask you questions about your demographics and experience as a Muslim college student as related to Islam, religiosity, and Islamophobia. The interview should take approximately 45 minutes to an hour to complete. To thank you for your participation, upon completion of your interview, there will be an option at the end for you to enter your information to receive a $10 Visa gift card. How We Thrive – Yacoub Aljaffery | Wedensday, November 12 | Noon

Yacoub Ajaffery from the Education Department will be sharing his story at How We Thrive on Wednesday November 12th from 12:00 p.m. – 12:20 p.m. in the Hoversten Chapel.
Yacoub first became a teacher at 12 in a refugee camp, teaching English to other refugees. Later, volunteer work in a Costa Rican orphanage turned that spark into a vocation. That path guides his work today as an ESL teacher-educator, helping future teachers turn care into practice and multilingualism into an asset.

Day of the Dead Student Community Exhibit at Lindell Library, November 1-21

The Augsburg community is invited to visit and view a student-led community exhibit to commemorate the departed for Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). Exhibit items include images of loved ones, cultural artifacts, related readings from the library, and student personal letters to their departed. The community exhibit will remain open through November 21.
