Interested in Working with Young People? Consider a Youth Studies Minor Class This Spring

This course will provide students with practical perspectives and experiences in work with children and youth from interdisciplinary perspectives. We will cover both theoretical frameworks for liberatory and culturally grounded work with youth and focused examinations of different types of youth work. Throughout the course, we will consider how our own positionality and experiences affect our engagements in work with youth and children.

Why a Youth Studies Minor?

This minor prepares you to work with and advocate for youth more effectively. You will develop knowledge and skills for working with young people from a variety of professions, including:

Critical Language Scholarship

Eligibility:
First-year Students, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors; US Citizens

Deadline:
Tuesday, November 18, 2025

Purpose:
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State that offers fully-funded overseas language and cultural immersion programs for American undergraduate and graduate students. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides study opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning.
The CLS Spark Program is a virtual opportunity that offers introductory language instruction in a number of CLS languages. Spark prioritizes students without access to instruction in the target language at their home institutions, and participation in Spark includes automatic consideration as a semi-finalist for the CLS summer language student (if the Spark participant applies for it). The critical languages supported currently include Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili

Application Process
CLS has great resources available to help you understand the program and application process and write strong essays. Be sure to consult them! Prospective applicants should consult with the campus representative as early as possible. No institutional endorsement is necessary, but Prof. deVries provides support for the application process.

Capitol Pathways Program – Paid Internships at the State Capitol – Applications Due November 13

Capitol Pathways is a paid spring internship program for college students. With the long-term goal of making Minnesota state government and policymaking more representative of our diverse communities, this program provides students leadership, legislative and career readiness training alongside an immersive internship experience with an organization working in policy during the legislative session. This is a spring internship from January – May, 2025.

My clinical research project is understanding how Tinder use impacts mental health outcomes, particularly self-esteem and body esteem. As-salamualaikum! My name is Sana Khan and I am currently a clinical psychology doctoral study student at Augsburg University. I am conducting a research study about how the mental health and religiosity of Muslim college students is impacted by Islamophobia and I would love to have you be a part of my study! The study will consist of an initial screener to make sure eligibility criteria is met and then scheduling an interview in which I ask you questions about your demographics and experience as a Muslim college student as related to Islam, religiosity, and Islamophobia. The interview should take approximately 45 minutes to an hour to complete. To thank you for your participation, upon completion of your interview, there will be an option at the end for you to enter your information to receive a $10 Visa gift card. New Disability Advocacy in Action Course This Spring

Are you passionate about disability advocacy? Want to learn about disability history and gain skills in dismantling systemic ableism? Consider a course being offered for the first time this spring.

EDC 488 / Topics Course: Disability Advocacy in Action (3 credits)

Course Description:
This hands-on course is designed to support students in the Disability Advocacy Scholars (DAS) program as they engage in leadership, reflection, and systems-change work grounded in disability justice. Students will explore both historical and contemporary movements shaping disability advocacy while developing their own advocacy frameworks. They will have the opportunity to design community-based projects that promote inclusion and accessibility. Through a combination of seminars, mentorship, and reflective practice, students will connect theory to action, gaining valuable skills in collaboration, public communication, and policy awareness. This course is open to all students interested in disability studies, education, or social justice.

We will provide a variety of crafting supplies to work with, and there will be an option to make physical and digital zines. Feel free to bring your own supplies. TODAY: Greenhouse First Friday

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Friday of every month this semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

The next First Friday of the semester is TODY, November 7, 12pm—3pm. The greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of the Hagfors Center.

How We Thrive – Yacoub Aljaffery | Wednesday, November 12 | Noon

Yacoub Ajaffery (Education) will be sharing his story at How We Thrive on Wednesday November 12th from 12:00 p.m. – 12:20 p.m. in the Hoversten Chapel.

Yacoub first became a teacher at 12 in a refugee camp, teaching English to other refugees. Later, volunteer work in a Costa Rican orphanage turned that spark into a vocation. That path guides his work today as an ESL teacher-educator, helping future teachers turn care into practice and multilingualism into an asset. Join us for another inspiring story from one of our talented community members.

The 46th annual Advent Vespers is just around the corner! Be a part of this wonderful event at the start of the Advent season. We will be in person again at Central Lutheran Church and need many volunteers.

There will be a dress rehearsal on Thursday, December 4th at 8:00 pm in addition to the Advent Vespers services on Friday, December 5th at 7:00 pm and Saturday, December 6th at 2 pm and 5 pm (with a hearty snack between the services). The music department invites you to an evening of orchestral music presented by the Augsburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Mark Elliot Bergman, featuring soloists Azariah Myart-Young, Sydney Elliot, and Andres Johnson.

This program brings together works that, in different ways, reflect on the idea of heroism. Battle inspires courage and intensity. Méditation offers a moment of inward reflection and the strength to change. Don Quixotte Burlesque playfully explores the determination, sometimes misguided, of a dreamer striving toward impossible ideals. Finally, Beethoven’s Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus embodies the heroic spirit of art itself, bringing light and inspiration to humanity.

Disabled Student Looking for Backup PCA

Hi, my name is Zander. I am a Senior, and I am disabled and in a wheelchair. I am looking for a backup PCA to help out when my regular PCA can’t. You do not need to be trained to be a PCA, as I will provide all of the training you will need, as it is not that technical of a job. My PCA comes to my dorm every day to help me with certain tasks that I cannot complete in a timely manner.. You would come when my main PCA needs a day off or can’t make it that day for different reasons, and help me with the tasks that they would usually help me with on that day. Some of the tasks you would do daily are refilling water bottles, refilling humidifiers, and making a bed. Expect this to take 15 or 30 minutes out of your day. Then, on top of that, I also require assistance with bathing once a week. Expect that to take an hour once a week. This job comes with very flexible hours. I will tell you what day I would need you, and you would pick a time on that day that you would come. There is no set required time that you have to come each day. The rate for this job will be $13 an hour; however, you are usually not there longer than an hour, so it usually turns out to $13 per day.
