HIS 440: Black Migrations to the United States (Prerequisite: ENL 111)

Course Description

Immigration shaped this country. An estimated 48 million people in the United States identify as Black. Their migrations—forced and voluntary—began in 1619 and continue to the present day. They came from Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and South and Central America. Many are descendants of enslaved people; others have emerged from places like Somalia and Ethiopia and Ghana and Jamaica. This course provides an overview of the journeys and experiences of African Americans and Black migrants and examines their unbroken ties—imagined and real—to the African continent. The course draws from a wide range of interdisciplinary sources, exposing students to major historical themes and significant Black figures. Through lectures, discussions, and thesis-driven writing assignments, students gain a substantive understanding of the African diaspora’s historical formation and develop critical reading and writing skills essential to successful careers.

Prof. Ibrahim Hirsi completed his Ph.D. in Immigration History at the University of Minnesota, after working as a journalist for the Sahan Journal, MinnPost, and Minnesota Public Radio. In addition to English, he speaks Somali, Arabic, and Swahili.

URGO Summer Research & Creative Activity Program — All Disciplines Welcome!
Phase 1 applications are due Friday, February 6 at 11:59 PM. Now is the time to connect with faculty members to explore the research and creative projects happening in your department.

The URGO Summer Research & Creative Activity Program is an 11-week, on-campus experience (May 18–July 31) that supports students conducting research or creative work alongside a faculty mentor. Full-time participants (400 hours) receive a $6,000 stipend plus a housing discount, while half-time participants (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO Summer Research & Creative Activity Assistantships
URGO also offers assistantships for students interested in working as research assistants on ongoing faculty projects. This option involves a 100-hour summer commitment and includes a $1,500 stipend. Assistantships are a great way to explore research for the first time or to contribute to a focused component of a larger project.

As you finalize your registration plans for spring semester, keep these ideas in mind:

In the 2025 catalog, both SPA 111 and 112 fulfill EITHER Language & Oral Communication OR Local & Global Perspectives. Take 111 and 112 and you will complete both of these General Ed. requirements!

In the pre-2025 catalog, SPA 111 fulfills Modern Language 1 and SPA 112 completes Modern Language 2.

Submit a Nomination for SEED Coalition Civic and Community Engagement Awards

The SEED Coalition issues annual awards for community and civic engaged students, educators, and community partners. The Sabo Center is soliciting nominations for the following awards:

Student Civic Leadership Award (student): Recognizes a student or group who model civic responsibility and leadership through initiative, collaboration, and community building, integrating civic engagement into their college experience.

Civic Educator Award (staff or faculty): Recognizes a faculty or staff member who models civic responsibility by supporting students’ civic development and strengthening a culture of engagement on campus through their teaching, mentorship, or leadership.

Community Partner Award (community partner): Recognizes a community-based partner or organization that enriches both educational and community outcomes through sustained, reciprocal partnerships with a college or university.

Community Collaboration Award (student, staff, faculty, department, or community partner): Recognizes a project or initiative co-created by campus and community partners that showcases meaningful collaboration and exemplifies the campus’s civic and community engagement, contributing to both student learning and community well-being.

Individuals can self-nominate or be nominated by another person.

Invitation to Participate in Research: Tinder Use and Mental Health Outcomes

My clinical research project is understanding how Tinder use impacts mental health outcomes, particularly self-esteem and body esteem. As-salamualaikum! My name is Sana Khan and I am currently a clinical psychology doctoral study student at Augsburg University. I am conducting a research study about how the mental health and religiosity of Muslim college students is impacted by Islamophobia and I would love to have you be a part of my study! The study will consist of an initial screener to make sure eligibility criteria is met and then scheduling an interview in which I ask you questions about your demographics and experience as a Muslim college student as related to Islam, religiosity, and Islamophobia. The interview should take approximately 25 minutes to 35 minutes to complete. To thank you for your participation, upon completion of your interview, there will be an option at the end for you to enter your information to receive a $10 Visa gift card. Supporting Our Neighbors: Wednesday Coffee at Rebecca’s—Date Correction

Businesses in Cedar-Riverside and Seward have been experiencing serious declines in sales–show up with your hearts and cash on Wednesday, January 21st. We’ll be meeting in the lobby of Christensen Center at 9:00 am and walking to Rebecca’s Bakery for coffee and pastries. Rebecca’s is the namesake of the owner’s daughter who is also an Auggie! Come for some of the best Ethiopian coffee in town and a selection of tasty sweet and savory goods.

Next Tuesday the 27th at Noon we’ll meet at the Sabo Center in Oren Gateway Center (right across from Nabo Cafe) and will walk to Nasiib Restaurant for lunch. Nasiib has amazing Somali food and has been generously feeding community members showing up to provide support for the neighborhood.

If you can’t make either of these dates, stay tuned for more opportunities from the Sabo Center. We’re hoping to plan a date once a week. Briefing on University Protocols for the Spring Semester

In this unprecedented and frightening moment, Augsburg remains committed to our students, our community, and our belief in the power of education as a form of resistance.

To prepare for the spring semester, all staff and faculty are invited to a Briefing on University Protocols in the Hoversten Chapel on Wednesday, January 21 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Topics to be covered include individual rights for employees, rights, responsibilities and risks as a community, private and public space, ways to mitigate risk and civic engagement. This meeting is hosted by the Post 1/20 work group and HR. It will not be live-streamed, but will be repeated on zoom in upcoming weeks.

Join your community in Hoversten Chapel on Wednesday, January 21 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. during community time for this important presentation.
