Hello Augsburg Community! Students, Faculty, and Staff are invited to AASA’s Cultural Exploration.

The Augsburg Asian Student Association’s Cultural Exploration aims explore a culture in the Pan-Asian community in various of ways to educate our members and to have a better understanding of a Pan-Asian identities.

Cultural Exploration: Syria will take place during AASA 6th General Meeting from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm in room Hagfors 150A and B. AASA has invited a guest speaker, alumnus Nazhi Safi 17′, to present on Syria. Come and learn about Syria’s history and culture.

URGO Summer Research Program
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program where undergraduate students are funded to conduct research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Student researchers gain important analytic, technical, and writing skills that are important for graduate school and careers. The URGO program also includes a weekly Speaker Series focused on research skills and professional development, as well as weekly seminars with fellow researchers. Students from all disciplines are invited to participate, and past projects have ranged from biology lab work to theater performance. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $4,000 stipend while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $2,000 stipend. Both receive a significant campus housing discount as well. The program runs from mid-May to the end of July and students must plan to be enrolled at Augsburg for Fall 2019 to be eligible.

In addition to the URGO Summer Research Program, URGO also funds 100-hour summer research assistantships where undergraduate students assist a faculty member with an ongoing research project. Research Assistants and mentors determine how to spread the 100 hours of work over the course of the summer and it is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Each year URGO offers $1,000 research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “on-campus research” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 10th.

URGO Conference Travel Grants Available for Student Researchers

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications September 10th.

It’s Model UN application time

Apply now to take the spring semester Model UN course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the 59th Midwest Model United Nations from February 20-23, 2019, held in St. Louis, Missouri.

In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in February. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.

The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!

The Midco Scholars Program is a partnership between Midcontinent Communications (Midco) and Augsburg University which provides opportunities for underrepresented students to explore a career in business/IT and gain relevant work experience. This semester, up to 4 students will be selected to become Midco Scholars. Each Scholar will take part in monthly professional development workshops, receive a $2,500 scholarship, and will also have the opportunity to apply for a competitive full-time Summer 2019 internship with Midco, either in their Sioux Falls, SD or Edina, MN offices. (Internships will more likely take place in Sioux Falls, so applicants should be available to live in Sioux Falls for the summer – housing is available).

Ideal candidates for the Midco Scholars Program will:
-Be a Junior in good standing at Augsburg (strong applications from Sophomores will be considered)
-Have a major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Data Analytics or other business related fields
-Be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of a summer internship and provide documents to verify work authorization

Midco Scholars Application

Please welcome Dr. Lauren Causey, Augsburg’s new Manager of Sponsored Research

I’m pleased to announce that Dr. Lauren Causey is Augsburg’s new Manager of Sponsored Research.

Lauren comes to Augsburg via the Science Museum of Minnesota, where she held the title of Senior Evaluation and Research Associate. In this position, Lauren served as lead proposal writer and/or evaluator on several $1M+ federal grants; served as a peer reviewer on National Science Foundation proposal review panels, and conducted prospect research on grantmakers familiar to faculty here.

Lauren was recently a member of the 2017-2018 cohort of Leaders in Equitable Evaluation and Diversity (LEEAD), a program under the auspices of the Annie E. Casey Foundation. LEEAD supports talented researchers in their pursuits of careers in evaluation that will influence the life outcomes of children, families, and communities.

As Manager of Sponsored Research, her primary responsibility will be to provide faculty and staff with guidance and direct support to help secure funds from external agencies and government sources such as the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education. These grants will support faculty and student research, federal outreach and student services programs (e.g. TRIO-SSS, TRIO – McNair); equipment purchases; and other academic and learning services functions of the university.

Visit the Writing Lab before Thanksgiving Break

The Writing Lab will be closed for Thanksgiving Break (Wednesday-Sunday), but you can still stop by today (Monday) or tomorrow (Tuesday) between 2:00 pm and 9:30 pm. We will open again on Monday, November 26th.

Our regular hours are Monday-Thursday from 2:00pm-9:30pm and Sundays from 7:00pm-9:30pm. We are located on the main floor of Lindell Library, to the left of the circulation desk. No appointment is needed – just show up! Tutors meet one-on-one with undergraduate and graduate students. They’ll talk about all kinds of writing (for any class, or even for writing that you’re doing outside of class) and can work with you at any stage of the writing process.

Join the program Faith, Vocation, and Social Change on spring break and travel to Guatemala!
Explore the concept of vocation in the context of poverty and political oppression, examining the ways in which Christian theology has been and continues to be used, both to justify oppression and injustice, as well as to support social justice movements and offer hope for a peaceful and just social order.

This program will meet a few times in spring semester, but much of the coursework will take place during your travel on spring break.

River Semester 2019 now accepting applications

Adventurous students are invited to apply to be part of the 2019 River Semester, which will spend 100 days traveling down the Mississippi from the Twin Cities to the Gulf of Mexico, with stops in St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans, and Cajun country in the Delta. Study a language abroad for free this summer

If you love studying language, then the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) could be a great fit for you! Augsburg had three students selected for this nationally-competitive scholarship just last year. Two Auggies applied to study Swahili in Tanzania and one to study Mandarin in Taiwan.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) is an eight to ten week language and cultural immersion program where students receive intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. CLS, a program of the U.S. Department of State, is part of a wider government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity (students select one of fifteen languages to study). Alumni of the program also receive non-competitive eligibility status when applying for government jobs – a rare opportunity!

Because these languages are less commonly taught, most programs do not require applicants to have any experience studying critical languages. The CLS Program seeks participants with diverse interests, and from a wide range of fields of study and career paths. Competitive applicants will need to be able to illustrate a commitment to language learning (have studied or speak a 2nd language), a strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting (we recommend a minimum GPA of 3.2; average GPA of Augsburg winners last year was 3.73), and ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program where undergraduate students are funded to conduct research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Student researchers gain important analytic, technical, and writing skills that are important for graduate school and careers. The URGO program is also includes a weekly Speaker Series focused on research skills and professional development, as well as weekly seminars with fellow researchers. Students from all disciplines are invited to participate, and past projects have ranged from biology lab work to theater performance.

URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $4,000 stipend while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $2,000 stipend. Both receive a significant campus housing discount as well. The program runs from mid-May to the end of July and students must plan to be enrolled at Augsburg for Fall 2018 to be eligible.

In addition to the URGO Summer Research Program, URGO also funds 100-hour summer research assistantships where undergraduate students assist a faculty member with an ongoing research project. Apply to be a Midco Scholar

The Midco Scholars Program is a partnership between Midcontinent Communications (Midco) and Augsburg University which provides opportunities for underrepresented students to explore a career in business/IT and gain relevant work experience. This semester, up to 4 students will be selected to become Midco Scholars. Each Scholar will take part in monthly professional development workshops, receive a $2,500 scholarship, and will also have the opportunity to apply for a competitive full-time Summer 2019 internship with Midco, either in their Sioux Falls, SD or Edina, MN offices. (Internships will more likely take place in Sioux Falls, so applicants should be available to live in Sioux Falls for the summer – housing is available).

Ideal candidates for the Midco Scholars Program will:
-Be a Junior in good standing at Augsburg (strong applications from Sophomores will be considered)
-Have a major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Data Analytics or other business related fields
-Be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of a summer internship and provide documents to verify work authorization

Underrepresented students, including students of color, low-income (Pell Grant eligible/Dream Grant eligible), and/or first generation college students are highly encouraged to apply.

Study a language abroad for free this summer

If you love studying language, then the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) could be a great fit for you! Augsburg had three students selected for this nationally-competitive scholarship just last year. Two Auggies applied to study Swahili in Tanzania and one to study Mandarin in Taiwan.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) is an eight to ten week language and cultural immersion program where students receive intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. CLS, a program of the U.S. Department of State, is part of a wider government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity (students select one of fifteen languages to study). Alumni of the program also receive non-competitive eligibility status when applying for government jobs – a rare opportunity!

Because these languages are less commonly taught, most programs do not require applicants to have any experience studying critical languages. The CLS Program seeks participants with diverse interests, and from a wide range of fields of study and career paths. Competitive applicants will need to be able to illustrate a commitment to language learning (have studied or speak a 2nd language), a strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting (we recommend a minimum GPA of 3.2; average GPA of Augsburg winners last year was 3.73), and ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

This program will meet a few times in spring semester, but much of the coursework will take place during your travel on spring break.

Apply now to take the spring semester Model UN course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the 59th Midwest Model United Nations from February 20-23, 2019, held in St. Louis, Missouri.

In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in February. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.

The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!

Augsburg’s Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) is pleased to bring Dr. Fernanda Soto Joya to campus for a presentation about the current political and social climate in Nicaragua, as well as the ways that history and social change can be understood through the perspective of indigenous people in Guatemala.

Dr. Soto Joya is CGEE’s newest instructor in Central America, where she teaches the course “Cultural Conflict and Social Change in Latin America: The Central American Context”.

About Dr. Soto Joya:
Fernanda Soto Joya, PhD, is a Honduran/Nicaraguan anthropologist whose research includes mestizo and indigenous communities in the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua and Honduras. Her current projects include research with colleagues at Michigan State University, defining a feminist collaborative research project in Nicaragua; the Institute of Development Policy (IOB) at Antwerpen University in Belgium teaching a class on intersectionality and feminist decolonial thought; and Northumbria’s University in England on a memory project about the war in Nicaragua during the 1980s

This event is also part of International Education Week, from November 12-16, a national effort to promote increased global awareness at US college campuses and universities.

Social work professor Bibiana Koh conducted a workshop with colleague Tony Bibus at the Annual Program Meeting of the Council on Social Work Education in Orlando, Florida, November 9, 2018. Entitled “Cultural Humility: Applying Virtue Ethics and Confucian Ethics in Social Work Education,” the workshop shared Prof. Koh’s and Prof. Emeritus Bibus’ work over the past two years that has led to their conceptualization of intercultural humility. They have facilitated similar workshops at venues such as the annual conferences of the Minnesota Social Services Association in Minneapolis on March 23 and the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers in Brooklyn Center on June 19, 2018.

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications September 10th.

Students, in response to being heard, to the value of circles, and to not having time to talk during the chapel time, we would like to invite you to a listening session from 2:00-3:30 in East Commons, today, Tuesday Nov. 13. We will be there to listen. We can decide together at the outset of that session whether or not those attending want a facilitated circle or an open mic time with agreed upon guidelines.

There are also steps being taken to organize “A Day of Action” that is collaboratively planned. Further communication about planning sessions will follow in the days ahead.

Annual Open Enrollment ends Friday, November 16th

All benefits eligible faculty and staff are required to complete the online enrollment form for 2019 elections even if you elect to waive coverage for 2019. Your 2018 elections WILL NOT carry over to 2019 (Medical, Dental, Vision, FSA, Dependent Care, and HSA).

Open Enrollment closes on Friday, November 16th at 4:30 p.m.

-There will be two additional coverage tiers for the dental plan – employee plus child(ren) and employee plus spouse/partner.
-There is an increase—from 1 times to 1.5 times base annual salary—in group term life insurance, with a new carrier – UNUM.

Augsburg’s Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) is pleased to bring Dr. Fernanda Soto Joya to campus for a presentation about the current political and social climate in Nicaragua, as well as the ways that history and social change can be understood through the perspective of indigenous people in Guatemala.

Dr. Soto Joya is CGEE’s newest instructor in Central America, where she teaches the course “Cultural Conflict and Social Change in Latin America: The Central American Context”.

About Dr. Soto Joya:
Fernanda Soto Joya, PhD, is a Honduran/Nicaraguan anthropologist whose research includes mestizo and indigenous communities in the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua and Honduras. Her current projects include research with colleagues at Michigan State University, defining a feminist collaborative research project in Nicaragua; the Institute of Development Policy (IOB) at Antwerpen University in Belgium teaching a class on intersectionality and feminist decolonial thought; and Northumbria’s University in England on a memory project about the war in Nicaragua during the 1980s

This event is also part of International Education Week, from November 12-16, a national effort to promote increased global awareness at US college campuses and universities.

Explore the concept of vocation in the context of poverty and political oppression, examining the ways in which Christian theology has been and continues to be used, both to justify oppression and injustice, as well as to support social justice movements and offer hope for a peaceful and just social order.

This program will meet a few times in spring semester, but much of the coursework will take place during your travel on spring break.

Course options:
RLN 409 – fulfills Search for Meaning II, or
RLN 480 – fulfills Keystone for some majors

Program Fee: $3,200

The Midco Scholars Program is a partnership between Midcontinent Communications (Midco) and Augsburg University which provides opportunities for underrepresented students to explore a career in business/IT and gain relevant work experience. This semester, up to 4 students will be selected to become Midco Scholars. Each Scholar will take part in monthly professional development workshops, receive a $2,500 scholarship, and will also have the opportunity to apply for a competitive full-time Summer 2019 internship with Midco, either in their Sioux Falls, SD or Edina, MN offices. (Internships will more likely take place in Sioux Falls, so applicants should be available to live in Sioux Falls for the summer – housing is available).

Ideal candidates for the Midco Scholars Program will:
-Be a Junior in good standing at Augsburg (anticipated graduation in Dec 2019 or May 2020)
-Have a major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Data Analytics or other business related fields
-Be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of a summer internship and provide documents to verify work authorization

Underrepresented students, including students of color, low-income (Pell Grant eligible/Dream Grant eligible), and/or first generation college students are highly encouraged to apply.

It’s Model UN application time

Apply now to take the spring semester Model UN course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the 59th Midwest Model United Nations from February 20-23, 2019, held in St. Louis, Missouri.

In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in February. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.

The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!

Last Chance Flu Shots on Campus

The MN Visiting Nurse Association has a few additional flu shot clinic dates available so they will be back at Augsburg on Wednesday 11/14/18 from 10:30 – 12:00 pm for on campus flu shots. Most insurances are accepted or you can pay $38 cash or check. It is a walk-in clinic so no appointment is needed. The flu shots will be in the Center for Wellness and Counseling office located on the first floor of the Anderson Res Hall. Please bring your insurance card and a photo ID. Please join us for the next SESQUICENTENNIAL STORY CIRCLE – Monday, November 12 at 7:00pm in the Foss Green Room. We need your “Augsburg Story” to create a new Music-Theater piece celebrating the diversity of Augsburg University. We will gather for 1½ to 2 hours to tell stories, write down thoughts, and share experiences about Augsburg. Theater professionals Leah Cooper of Wonderlust Productions and Aaron Gabriel (‘01) of Interact Theater will facilitate, posing questions such as, “Tell us about your first day at Augsburg and what that was like.” “Tell us about a moment when you realized this was exactly the right or wrong place for you.” “Tell us about your favorite place, object or person at Augsburg.” If you don’t feel like sharing, you can just listen. Nobody’s story or experiences will be used in the play directly (like a documentary); they’ll be blended together into a fictional story, protecting the privacy of those who share. Prof. Pippert’s Research Continues to Resonate

Auggies Compete in Math Contests

Augsburg students participated in two math competitions in the last two weeks.

The Augsburg team of Julie Henderson, Andrew Hotchkiss, Ryan Masui, and Brandon Perez were among about 375 students from 35 colleges and universities participating in the third annual Minnesota Midwest Undergraduate Data Analytics Competition on Saturday November 3 at Optum Health in Eden Prairie accompanied by Prof. John Zobitz. Each team worked collaboratively to identify factors to predict voter turnout in the 2018 midterm elections and presented their work several times to business and STEM professionals.

Auggies Annabelle Arns, Lexander Boukal, Julie Henderson, Annika Hegrenes, Lewis Istok, Heather Krumwiede, Alek Lukanen, and Matt Muller constituted three of around 80 teams from 25 colleges and universities in the North Central Section of the Mathematical Association of America to participate in their twenty-second annual team contest, with support from Prof. Matt Haines. Each team hunkered down in the Hagfors Center on Saturday November 10 to work collaboratively on ten challenging mathematical problems in three hours. Results will be available in a few of weeks.

Kudos to the student participants in both competitions!
