Augsburg Parking Updates

submitted by westa@augsburg.edu

Augsburg has reached their parking capacity so Parking Services would like to notify that current requests for parking permits are unfortunately being denied. The Department of Public Safety is working to find solutions moving forward to be able to accommodate our community as best as possible. We thank you for your patience during this time and through the busy transition into the new academic year.

If you have a visitor or guest coming to campus, lot E is available for short term visits, up to 3 hours per day. Visitors need to come to the Public Safety window in the Urness/Mortensen lobby to obtain a permit. This lot is also a first come, first serve basis and there are only a limited number each day we can issue out. If it is full when they arrive, we do not have any additional on campus parking available to them.

Please refer your guest(s) to surrounding city street areas with the understanding that they will have to abide by the city’s restrictions and be subject to their enforcement if found in violation. There are pay ramps nearby at the U of M campus that your visitors will be welcome to use. We also encourage you to advise your guests and visitors to use alternate transit options.

For more information or if you have additional questions, please email parking@augsburg.edu. The typical response time is 2 business days, but we ask for added patience with the increased volume of emails and communication we are experiencing.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Nursing Students and Faculty Open a Health Commons in Rochester

submitted by sancheza@augsburg.edu

Starting September 24th, Augsburg University will establish a Rochester Health Commons. The Health Commons is a nursing-led free drop-in center that is dedicated to serving those in need. Augsburg first created this model of nursing care at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis in 1992, and now DNP students and faculty are establishing a Health Commons in Rochester. Our belief is that health is found through relationship-building and community engagement. We are here to listen and provide support. Other services include blood pressure checks, foot care, connections to community resources, and health discussions. We also have free supplies such as toiletries, oral care items, and socks. The Health Commons is located in L-7 in the basement of Bethel Lutheran Church and is open every Monday (except holidays) from 4:00-5:30. We invite you to come for a cup of coffee, to establish community, or to just get some socks! All are welcome!

The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications September 10th.

If you have any questions about undergraduate conference travel opportunities, please contact Kirsten O’Brien at obrienk@augsburg.edu or x1446.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “on-campus research” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. Augsburg Native American Film Series Event! October 8, 2018
Please join us for the international opening of The Eagle and The Condor–From Standing Rock with Love. The film is based around prophecy of the Eagle and Condor that originates with nations from the South and features ceremony held at the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) site on Indigenous People’s Day, October 10th, 2016. The ancient prophecy predicted the epic Standing Rock water protection actions – and continues to challenge all to identify and unite our gifts and power.

National Suicidal Prevention Month — Resources for Support

submitted by detloff@augsburg.edu

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. If you or someone you love is struggling with thoughts of suicide, please know that there are many resources for support available on and off campus.

From Half of Us.com: “Many of us have had moments when we don’t want to go on or think we just can’t deal with how we’re feeling anymore. Sometimes those thoughts go further and people start thinking seriously about ending their lives. If you or someone you know has reached that level of hopelessness, you have to speak up or reach out for help now. You aren’t alone in those feelings and there are ways to feel better.”

If you are feeling hopeless or overwhelmed, the Center for Wellness and Counseling encourages you to come in to meet with one of our counselors. Call if you can, or just come in, and tell the front desk that you need to be seen right away if you don’t feel safe. (8-4:30 M-F) 612-330-1707.

Just call CWC’s regular number, 612-330-1707, and choose “option 1” (available whenever CWC is closed, 24/7, year-round).

Faculty: Request a Study Abroad/Away Class Visit Today

submitted by stoddard@augsburg.edu

As part of the University’s increased internationalization efforts, the Center for Global Education & Experience staff are visiting classes across campus to spread the word to your students about the many study, internship and research options available to them both abroad and off-campus around the US.

Can you spare 5-10 minutes in your class(es) in Fall semester for a message about study abroad/away programs? If so, please request a visit to your class online!

We can customize our message based on your course content, and on your majors’ needs and interests. We can address questions about scholarships, various length programs (some are better for WEC/AU students, STEM, Honors, athletes, etc) and other issues you might identify. And as always, we are happy to provide content to AugSem’s with a full class period on the topic of study abroad/away.
