Fluent in Spanish? Be a Debate Judge for the Spanish Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for Spanish-speaking adults to judge our Spanish Debate League. This program helps middle and high school students build confidence, grow their academic skills, improve their fluency, and connect with other Spanish speakers in the Twin Cities.

*NO DEBATE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED, BUT YOU MUST BE FLUENT IN SPANISH!*

You will earn $55 for each tournament you judge. We will provide transportation if necessary.

Tournaments will happen at the following dates and times:

• April 25: Held at WTMS from 3:15-7:15 PM.
• May 4: Virtual tournament (held online) 12:15-5:15 PM
• May 8: Location TBA, held 3:15-7:15 PM.

Are you intrigued by the power of music and its influence on memory? If so, we invite you to participate in our research study conducted by psychology students at Augsburg University!

Study Description:

This study investigates the relationship between background music and memory performance, specifically in college students. Our goal is to uncover how different types of music may affect learning and study strategies. By participating, you’ll contribute to advancing our understanding of how music can impact memory recall and retention.

What’s Involved:

Participation is simple and straightforward. You will be asked to engage in a memory task while listening to different types of background music of your choice—or in complete silence, too! This will involve a short session where you’ll be presented with information to remember, followed by a recall task. Your participation will help us analyze the effects of music on memory performance.

Eligibility:

Participants will be recruited from Augsburg University, with inclusion criteria requiring current enrollment, age 18 or older, and fluency in English. We highly recommend participating in this study with headphones, laptops, or devices with electronic audio devices!

How to Participate?

On Friday, April 26th, we will be welcoming Dr. Marci Sortor, Provost, St. Olaf College to campus. Dr. Sortor has experience as an HLC peer reviewer and has graciously agreed to serve as a reviewer for our mock site visit to help us prepare for our upcoming reaffirmation of accreditation visit in October 2024. Weaving the Past, Present, and Future of 2511 E. Franklin Avenue, Saturday, April 27

Augsburg University recently announced an agreement to sell the property to the Somali Museum of Minnesota to develop a permanent museum facility and cultural center on the former Bethany Lutheran Church site at 2511 E. Franklin Avenue.

Augsburg has worked with Redesign to identify a financially sustainable, community-serving use for the property that contributes to the vitality of the East Franklin corridor. During the 2023 legislative session, the Somali Museum was approved for state funding to advance the project.

Neighbors and community members are invited to attend a community gathering about the past, present, and future of 2511 East Franklin Avenue on Saturday, April 27, from 12:30 PM – 3:30 PM at Matthews Recreation Center (2318 29th Ave. S). Please join us to learn about the Somali Museum and its vision for the site. Participants will be invited to share stories about the site’s history and place in Seward.

The library will see three retirements at the end of May: Mary Hollerich, Mike Bloomberg, and Karen Alexander. We want to celebrate their combined 38 years of service to Augsburg, as well as say a fond farewell to our upcoming student graduates.

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

Do You Work in or Study Finance? The MNUDL Seeks Financial Literacy Leadership Debate Judges

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, provides academic competitive debate for middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. We tailor the debate model to meet the needs of a variety of students. One of our special programs, which is tailored specifically for girls and gender expansive youth, is Financial Literacy Leadership Debates.

Financial Literacy Leadership Debate is an innovative after-school program that supports students’ public speaking and critical thinking skills while also building financial literacy knowledge. Our program works to close the gender gap in the financial sector by building the leadership and financial knowledge of high school participants through debate. Over the course of the initiative, students meet with their coaches after school, learn about the topic area and fundamental economic concepts through an engaging curriculum, hold practice debates, and prepare for in-person tournaments.

We’re seeking women and gender expansive individuals who study or work in finance related fields to serve as debate judges. No experience is needed- we’ll train you! By being a judge, you’ll have a chance to connect with students and share about your own experiences in this field.

We have two tournaments left this season: one on May 15th (held at Johnson High School) and one on May 29th (at Augsburg University). Tournaments are held from 3:15-7:15 PM.

Are you intrigued by the power of music and its influence on memory? If so, we invite you to participate in our research study conducted by psychology students at Augsburg University!

Study Description:

This study investigates the relationship between background music and memory performance, specifically in college students. Our goal is to uncover how different types of music may affect learning and study strategies. By participating, you’ll contribute to advancing our understanding of how music can impact memory recall and retention.

What’s Involved:

Participation is simple and straightforward. You will be asked to engage in a memory task while listening to different types of background music of your choice—or in complete silence, too! This will involve a short session where you’ll be presented with information to remember, followed by a recall task. Your participation will help us analyze the effects of music on memory performance.

Eligibility:

Participants will be recruited from Augsburg University, with inclusion criteria requiring current enrollment, age 18 or older, and fluency in English. We highly recommend participating in this study with headphones, laptops, or devices with electronic audio devices!

How to Participate?

Confidentiality:

Your privacy is of utmost importance to us. All study records will be kept confidential and data will be stored securely. Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Augsburg is on ten-year accreditation cycle with the Higher Learning Commission and we are scheduled for our ten-year review in 2024 (site visit scheduled for October 21-22). As a component of this review, members of the HLC Reaffirmation of Accreditation Steering Committee have been hard at work preparing Augsburg’s Reaffirmation of Accreditation Assurance Argument. A working draft of the document is now posted on the HLC Accreditation Moodle site (see the Documents and Drafts section). Should you wish to review the document, the Committee would welcome any comments or suggestions you might have. There is a form to submit comments near the top of the Moodle site. We are particularly interested in pieces of evidence that might be used to back up statements about or practices.

MNUDL Needs Your Help: Fight Funding Cuts at Saint Paul Public Schools

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program in Augsburg University, is facing a major challenge to debate in St. Paul: a $107 million district deficit and looming budget cuts for debate. That puts 400 middle and high school students’ ability to debate at risk, meaning they’ll miss out on the crucial benefits debate provides. They deserve the same chance for academic growth, social and emotional learning, and leadership skills that their peers in well-resourced suburban schools, private schools, and other local districts receive through debate!

Act Now: Ask Your Legislators to Invest in the Promise Equalization Scholarship

Last year’s investment by state policymakers in college affordability through the North Star Promise left out one-third of low- and middle-income students earning bachelor’s degrees—those who attend private nonprofit colleges like Augsburg.

New legislation authored this year by Sen. Omar Fateh and Rep. Dan Wolgamott would provide financial aid parity for low- and middle-income students at nonprofit colleges. The PROMISE EQUALIZATION SCHOLARSHIP investment of $13.9 million would mirror how much the state is investing through the North Star Promise to support students at the University of Minnesota, restoring financial aid parity for students at nonprofit colleges.

With the new Promise Equalization Scholarship, the State of Minnesota would help make college more affordable and reduce student debt for those students at nonprofit colleges with the most need—just as the North Star Promise Scholarship has done for low- and middle-income students at public and tribal colleges. An estimated 13,000 students would receive an average scholarship of about $1,000, helping low- and middle-income students who currently receive the Minnesota State Grant. Here at Augsburg, about 1,400 undergraduates would benefit from the new scholarship. Because there is a large surplus in the appropriation for the North Star Promise, this can be accomplished without any additional state funding.

The Minnesota Private College Council has put together an easy way to contact your legislators—it only takes a minute.

Online Survey—Chance to Win $100 Gift Card

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

Auggie Wins a Fulbright

Congratulations to Emma Joswiak-McLaughlin for being awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Bulgaria! Emma is a senior graduating this coming May with a degree in Secondary Education: Communication Arts and Literature. She is heavily involved in the Augsburg community as a member of the National Communication Studies honor society, Lambda Pi Eta, and the National Education Association’s Aspiring Educators Club. Emma has also worked for Augsburg’s Writing Center for two years as a tutor and is currently student-teaching at Southwest High School in Minneapolis. To prepare for her Fulbright grant, Emma has been volunteering at a number of animal rescue organizations, learning Bulgarian in her spare time, and trying not to poison her loved ones with her attempts at cooking Bulgarian cuisine. Kudos to Emma!

Auggie Wins a CLS Spark

Elizabeth Goff ’25 is majoring in psychology and has a double minor in studio art and religion. She won the Critical Language Scholarship Spark, which teaches a full year of a language critical to the U.S. Over the summer Elizabeth will be studying Russian virtually. Only 10% of applicants win the award nationwide. She hopes to use this new knowledge to help her with her research in the future. Congratulations Liz!

Auggie Wins a Goldwater

Luke Omodt, a junior majoring in physics and chemistry, has been named a Goldwater Scholar, which is the top STEM award in the country. Goldwater named 438 scholars across the country, seven of whom come from MN colleges and universities. Luke is currently doing computational materials science research with Professor Hickox-Young in physics and will be working with him this summer funded by Dean and Amy Sundquist. In the past Luke conducted research with Professor Dasgupta in physics and at the U of M and Cornell University. Congratulations Luke!

The Center for Teaching and Learning is pleased to announce that our 2024 Days in May Workshops will take place Wednesday, May 8 – Thursday, May 9, 2024, 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.

We invite proposals for professional development sessions from all interested faculty and staff. May workshop sessions might include areas of teaching and learning, leadership & service development, or research & scholarship development.

Sessions may be 60 minutes or 105 minutes.
All workshops will take place in smart classrooms unless otherwise requested below.
For full consideration, please submit proposals no later than Friday, April 5, 2024. Presenters will be notified on or before April 15th.
We hope you will consider sharing your best practices with our Augsburg teaching community.

Days in May Call for Proposals

Eclipse Watching Opportunities at Augsburg

The Solar Eclipse is coming up on Monday, April 8. Join us outside Hagfors Center on the patio from 1pm-3pm to watch as the Moon moves in front of the Sun. Here in Minnesota, about 75% of the Sun will be blocked by the Moon, with maximum coverage occurring around 2pm. We will have several different Sun-safe viewing options available (weather permitting), including solar telescopes, eclipse glasses, a sunspotter, and more! If it’s cloudy and we can’t observe the Sun ourselves, you can still join us to watch the NASA livestream of the eclipse.

If you miss this chance on April 8, 2024… you will be graduated or even retired when the next eclipse happens in North America (August 23, 2044). Thank you to Physics Faculty Katrina Marslender and Steve Brehmer for organizing this event.

Vocation Chapel on Tuesday: Kristen Chamberlain

On Tuesday, April 9, Kristen Chamberlain, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, Film, and New Media, will share her story in the next installment of the “Uncovering Vocation Series.” Uncovering Vocation is co-sponsored by the Christensen Center for Vocation.
Kristen earned her PhD in Communication Studies from North Dakota State University in 2007. She has been teaching a variety of classes as part of the Department of Communication Studies, Film, and New Media since the fall of 2007. Kristen is particularly passionate about environmental communication and has identified as an environmentalist since 9th grade. She is also always ready to talk about the media, favorite books, and cats.

GenEd Revisions Faculty Vote—Wed April 10

The vote on the proposed general education revisions is planned for the faculty meeting on Wednesday, April 10th from 3:40 – 5:10pm. Information about the proposed revisions is available in the updated General Education Revision Proposal. The proposal consists of an introduction (p. 1), an executive summary (p. 2), and an overview of the rationale and proposed revisions to our undergraduate general education curriculum (pp. 3 – 11).

We are grateful to Augsburg Day Student Government for their review and unanimous support of the proposed revisions, to our faculty colleagues for their comments and questions at the first reading during the March faculty meeting, and to all those who contributed to this important initiative over the last year.
