Important Campus Access Reminders

submitted by publicsafety@augsburg.edu

Safety on campus is a shared responsibility. Preventing behaviors like “piggybacking” or “tailgating” (letting individuals without a fob follow others through fob-access doors) is an important way we maintain a safe environment for all Auggies. While it may feel uncomfortable, it’s important not to hold secure doors open for people you don’t know.

CAMPUS ACCESS REMINDERS:

– Use your own fob, every time.

– If someone you don’t know approaches a locked door at the same time as you, step back and allow them to fob in ahead of you. If they don’t have a fob, they should contact the Department of Public Safety or call the person they are trying to meet.

– If you use your fob to let someone you don’t know into a secure area, it is your responsibility to escort them to their destination and stay with them until they connect with the individual(s) they are on campus to meet.

– If someone you don’t know follows you into a residence hall, contact the Department of Public Safety at (612) 330-1717 immediately.

Review more safety tips.

Tian
by Johanna Caroline Schön

Directed by Kayla Marie Mielke and Johanna Caroline Schön

Who owns history? And who is allowed to tell its stories? The student-written piece Tian centers around these fundamental questions. This conflict becomes clear when the audience is led through the life of romantic poet Karoline von Günderrode by two characters with two very different claims to Karoline’s story: Bettine von Arnim, contemporary and close friend of Karoline, who wants to paint a strong, feminist picture; and the Playwright whose goal is to create an enticing, heart-wrenching play. The audience finds themselves in the in-betweens of history, whilst being part of Karoline’s personal journey filled with struggles, doubt, and dreams.

The performance dates are the 13th, 14th, 15th of February at 7:00PM, and the 16th at 3:00pm.

February 10: Moving from Inclusion to Equity in Music Education, Research Presentation and Discussion

Moving from Inclusion to Equity: Counterstories of Collegiate Music Students and their Institution’s Stories in Dialogue

Research Presentation and Group Discussion

Date: Monday, February 10th, 12–12:50pm Location: Lindell 301

Presenter: Mallory Alekna, Assistant Professor of Music, Human Development, and Learning

***
Universities and colleges often tell stories about the ways in which they have transformed in order to include and support diverse students. These stories are told through promotional and recruitment materials, values and mission statements, and university branding. It is well documented, however, that institutions maintain themselves, leaving the underlying structures of oppression and exclusion untouched (Ahmed, 2012).

Through this study, I examine the storied conflict between institutions and students, placing the lives of students in direct dialogue with the story of an institution. This study presents stories from multiple students, including those who are working to enact change at their institution. These stories are all being lived and told by students attending an institution that is striving to tell a story of growth and change. Examining these stories side by side, interweaving the stories of students with those of the institution, contributes to our understanding of the complex ways in which students experience equity and inequity, the complex ways in which institutions impact their experiences, and the complicated, untidy, messy work of striving toward equity when systems and structures tend to function “as usual” (Ahmed, 2017b).

Hello, my name is Ashley Wurster and I am currently a clinical psychology doctoral student at Augsburg University. The study will be completed exclusively online and consist of a survey about your demographics and your experiences with and attitudes on schizophrenia/severe mental illnesses. It should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. To thank you for your participation, there will be an option at the end of the survey to have a $2 bill mailed to you. Check Out Cultures of Violence (SOC 290)

submitted by velamcco@augsburg.edu

Looking for a cool course to round out your schedule this spring? Consider taking Cultures of Violence (SOC 290)!

Street gangs and warfare. Police brutality and genocide. Domestic abuse and riots. What are the dynamics underlying these and other forms of violence? What do they have in common? How do they differ? This course takes violence in its many forms as a topic for sociological analysis. With this in mind, we will learn about the underlying social, interactional, group, and institutional dynamics that lead to violent behavior. In addition to the topics noted above, the course covers gender & violence, intergroup conflict, war propaganda, hate crime, the military-industrial complex, and so much more.

Cultures of Violence is scheduled for MWF, 1:50 – 3:00 p.m. It won’t be available again for two years, so register now!

Here’s what students are saying about it:

“This course is the definition of amazing and I honestly wish I could take it again. I would recommend this class to anyone, whether interested in sociology or not. I believe that anyone would fall in love and benefit from taking this course.”

“I loved this course! James is an incredible professor and I’ve always deeply enjoyed his classes. SOC 290 gave me a whole new perspective on sociology, violence, and culture. I am grateful I took this class!”

“[Prof.] James has always been and will forever be one of the most amazing professors I have had during my time at Augsburg. I always feel challenged, supported, and respected during his classes.”

Seeking Nominations for the Sabo Center Engagement Committee

submitted by gilmerje@augsburg.edu

The Sabo Center is forming an advisory council to grow more and better collaborations, make our work more diffuse around campus and in our neighborhoods, and bring more voices into our processes and planning. This is an opportunity for staff, faculty, students and community members to learn more about and contribute to community-engaged work at Augsburg, build relationships, and share ideas and experiences in ways that can help inform our work.

The Sabo Center Engagement Council (SCEC) will support and guide community engagement and changemaking work at Augsburg and in our neighborhoods. The SCEC is not a decision-making body. Staff, Students, Faculty and Community Members are eligible for nomination.

Expectations:
– Attend three committee meetings throughout the spring semester of 2025.
– Advocate for community-engaged work broadly across campus and beyond.
– Serve 2 year terms. We are tentatively planning for meetings the weeks of February 17th, March 17th, April 14th, and an informal gathering at the end of April.

Students & members of the community outside Augsburg are eligible for an honorarium to support their participation.

If you would like to nominate yourself or others, please fill out the short form linked below by January 24th. Nominees will be informed of acceptance by January 31st, 2025.
