YST 210: Rethinking Children and Youth

Fall 2025, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30pm to 5:10pm

Instructor: Kao Nou L. Moua, PhD, MSW, LGSW (mouakao@augsburg.edu)

Society often expects children and youth to be seen and not heard. This course will develop an understanding of children and youth that will allow us to engage them as assets and agents of positive change.

This class is great for future youth workers, social workers, educators, coaches, and youth mentors!

May 2025 GenEd Update

submitted by boylek@augsburg.edu

Dear Augsburg Community,

Progress continues on implementation planning for the new general education curriculum to start in fall 2025. Updated general education resources will be shared with faculty and staff during the upcoming Days in May session on Wednesday, May 14th from 9-10am, and available to everyone soon on the General Education Revision 2023 Community Moodle page.

Thank you to the undergraduate students and advisors for considering whether or not to switch to the new general education curriculum; the overall response has been positive. Thank you as well to Alex Fink, Mike Grewe, Lori Brandt Hale, Morgan Knutzen, Daleana Phillips, Tina Maria Tavera, and Leah Spinosa de Vega for their guidance and wisdom on updated Augsburg Experience Guidelines.

With gratitude,
Stacy Freiheit (freiheit@augsburg.edu)

General Announcements

Campus Boxes Closing Soon

submitted by longj@augsburg.edu

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (on May 23, 2025) we will close all student campus boxes unless they responded to the End of Year survey. If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please fill out this survey
(https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSen8Hb9X2VU3VbQWqr9sPleUUk0pJROmx7iM6sr-lfY4vjgMw/viewform?usp=sharing).

Before the fall semester starts we will reassign campus boxes to all residential students. Without completing the survey, it will most likely be a different number.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail. Packages must be looked at case by case. Some USPS will allow forwarding. (Reply to the Augsburg package email and we will look at that package.) Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will not be forwarded. We can also only forward to USA addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted. Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Augsburg is classified as a business so you will not be able to do so through the US Post Office itself. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option, it is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the USPS or Augsburg University, just with the Mailroom.

Can I Have Your Password, Please?

submitted by matthias@augsburg.edu

In case you’ve received an email lately about your Account being suspended, this is the most recent phishing attempt that Augsburg is experiencing. Phishing has been around for many years and still uses the same techniques described on our IT webpage. Given this most recent attempt, it’s a good reminder to look out for the following red flags in emails…

The message has a sense of urgency
The message includes links you are not expecting (don’t click on these)
The email is unexpected or comes from an address that doesn’t match the sender’s name
The message asks you for personal information, such as username, password, or Duo code.

Augsburg will not send you emails asking you to provide account information! If you receive phishing emails, mark them as Spam and/or delete them.

Do not ever share your password with anyone.
Do not ever share a Duo code with anyone.

For more information on combating phishing or for technical assistance, please reach out to the Service Desk or your LFC.

VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION FAQS:
Do I need to bring anything? No, all materials will be provided.
How do I sign up? Reserve a spot via Eventbrite above, and/or email Jared at volunteer@thecedar.org with your first and last name and which orientation you’d like to sign up for.

What if I reserve a spot but can’t make it? No worries – we host monthly orientation meetings. Scroll down to next month’s calendar to see if our next orientation works for you.

Can my underage child volunteer? Volunteers must be 18+ to serve alcohol and to cleanup, with respect to alcohol sales and curfew laws. However, if you’d like to volunteer with your child, signup for the orientation and we can accommodate.

If I sign up for the orientation, can I bring a friend? The more the merrier here at The Cedar. Feel free to bring anyone who might be interested in volunteering to our orientation.
