2025 TRIO/SSS Summer Bridge Program

submitted by rodrig@augsburg.edu

This week, sixteen new Auggies start their university life with the 2025 TRIO/SSS Summer Bridge program. This four-week, intensive, residential and academic learning community is offered to incoming first-year students who then participate in TRIO/SSS all four years at Augsburg.

From June 22 to July 17, Summer Bridge students will complete two courses: COM111: Public Speaking and TRI101: Navigating the Hidden Curriculum of Higher Education. In addition, students will learn about university resources, develop academic skills, and participate in social and academic activities to develop a strong sense of community through learning and living together.

Summer Bridge and TRIO/Student Support Services are jointly funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Augsburg University. Great appreciation goes to campus partners* who continue to help make this program a huge success every year!

*Special kudos to staff in Campus Life and SOAR, Residence Life, Academic Advising, Student Financial Services, Registrar, Undergraduate Admissions, CLASS Disability Resources, The Dean’s Office, University Events, Dining Services, Campus Ministry and Professor Kristen Chamberlain who kindly accepted the challenge of teaching a four-week version of Public Speaking!

Call to Action From EPNI

submitted by gilmerje@augsburg.edu

Project Overview: The East Phillips Urban Farm Project is a community-led, land back initiative to transfer the 7-acre Roof Depot site from the City of Minneapolis to the East Phillips neighborhood and Little Earth for a community-owned, mixed-use development project.
East Phillips Neighborhood Institute (EPNI) has already raised millions of dollars for this project which will bring needed resources and climate-resilient infrastructure to Minneapolis, including:
a vast solar array, a commercial kitchen, year-round fresh food access, well paying jobs and job training sites, cultural education and gathering spaces, affordable rent for local businesses and community organizations, and more.

FUNDING LOSS

June 10th – Minnesota Senate and House wrapped their 2025 special session by cutting nearly all local funding, including $5.7 million allocated to complete EPNI’s purchase agreement with the City of Minneapolis for the Roof Depot site

Friday, June 27th – EPNI meets with city staff to discuss the loss & determine a fair path forward

July 1st deadline – without this $5.7 million, because of a contingency deadline in the current purchase agreement, the City has the option to terminate EPNI’s deal ahead of the set September 15th closing date, putting this project and East Phillips at risk once again

Right now, EPNI needs you to tell your elected officials that this $5.7 million burden should not fall on East Phillips. Please call and email elected officials to share why you support this project, and want them to get it to the finish line, not put up more obstacles.

Sod House Theater is excited to present a playful and impactful new theater piece that addresses the need for awareness around Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. This piece follows the lives of Don and Myrna, an aging, inter-racial couple who uses their imagination to cope and adapt as Myrna begins to experience symptoms of dementia. Using their imagination Don and Myrna take fantastical vacations to locations all over the world until the lines between reality and imagination begin to blur. This whimsical and compassionate hour-long piece thoughtfully provides insights on the impact of dementia. In addition to the touching and humorous piece, Sod House Theater is partnering with Adenike Ademola, Master of Social Work, who is present at performances to offer knowledge and resources about the aging population, caregiving and dementia with materials for awareness and screening resources after the production.

I-94 Project Updates: Closure This Weekend and Summer Construction Plans

submitted by farrisr@augsburg.edu

Starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, June 13, all I-94 entrance and exit ramps between I-35W and Huron Blvd will be closed. An hour later at 10 p.m., both directions of I-94 will be fully closed in the same area. Crews are doing a traffic shift from the eastbound lanes to the westbound lanes this weekend, so they’ll be able to continue their bridge repair work along eastbound I-94.

To avoid the closure, please follow the posted detour of I-35W to Hwy 36 to I-35E to I-94.

By 5 a.m. on Monday, June 16, I-94 will reopen and be reduced to two lanes in each direction on the west side of the interstate through mid-August.

The following ramps will remain closed through mid-August:

— Northbound I-35W to eastbound I-94
— South 6th St. to eastbound I-94
— Huron Blvd. to eastbound I-94
— Eastbound I-94 to Huron Blvd.
— Riverside Ave. to eastbound I-94
— Cedar Ave. to eastbound I-94

Please use alternate routes to bypass these ramp closures.

Additionally, Cedar Ave. will be reduced to one lane in each direction under the I-94 bridges from Monday, June 16, through early August.

The Hiawatha LRT Trail between 15th Ave. South and East Franklin Ave. will also be closed starting Monday, June 16 through mid-July.

All lanes on I-94 between I-35W and Huron Blvd. are expected to reopen to traffic for the State Fair starting in mid-August through Labor Day. Final construction activities will resume after Labor Day and last through the fall.

Plan ahead by checking 511, and give yourself additional time to reach your destination. All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change.

Visit the MnDOT project website for more information.

Deadline Extended: Nominate Yourself or a Colleague for Staff Senate

submitted by lenze@augsburg.edu

Staff Senate nominations are open and have been extended! Please nominate yourself or a colleague who you think would be a great fit! The deadline to nominate is Friday June 16th. After which a ballot will be sent out in early June.

Everyone who is nominated is asked if they would like to accept their nomination, so even if you’re unsure whether or not the person would be interested, nominating them doesn’t commit them to anything! We’ve added some info below to give you an idea about what the Staff Senate does and some of the events we did this year. If you have any questions feel free to reach by emailing Staff Senate at staffsenate@augsburg.edu.

The Augsburg University Staff Senate is a body of elected staff members who advocate on behalf of the staff, foster meaningful dialogue, and work to recognize and celebrate the impact of staff members on the University and community.

Staff Senators meet monthly to discuss events, staff/campus concerns. This year we hosted several staff wellness events and the annual staff appreciation.

You can also talk to current members which includes Emilie Lenz, Keri Clifton, Izzy Rankin, Hayley Selinski, and Elijah Owens to get more information.

Nominate a co-worker or yourself!
