12 Days of Gratitude

submitted by whitneyr@augsburg.edu

Calling all Auggies!! Share what you are grateful for during 12 Days of Gratitude.

Augsburg’s virtual gratitude jar (https://goo.gl/forms/MwscrQGkNAbUUBym2) will be open from now until December 21st, for all Auggies to share what they are grateful for–big or small. Statements of gratitude made here will be shared at the start of 2019 through Augsburg Wellbeing (hint, hint: we’re re-branding!). This will give us a moment to reflect on the good, and feel grateful for what was, while looking forward to 2019. Gratitude statements will be shared anonymously unless otherwise requested by the statement writer. The form will be open for the 12 days leading up to the holiday break (from now through December 21st).

Examples of gratitude statements (obviously, specific to me–yours will look different!): I am grateful for my HR team and all the work they do to support Augsburg.

Interfaith Discussion on Religion and Oppression

submitted by nguyenj@augsburg.edu

The Power of Religion: For Oppression and For Liberation

Thursday, December 13th 6:30-8:30

Cedar Commons (2001 Riverside Ave. S, below Trinity offices)

Join us for a meal and conversation as we engage the topic of religion as a tool for perpetuating oppression, as well as a powerful force towards liberation.

* What makes religion so susceptible to use as a tool of violence and control?

* How do organizations with power hijack or manipulate religion to carry out oppression in the name of their faith?

* Why and how does certain theology try to explain away suffering, justify oppression and quell courageous resistance?

* How, instead, can religion fuel the work of liberation?

The U.S. Department of State is pleased to announce that Carden Olson from Augsburg University was selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad this Summer 2019. Carden is a Psychology major with a minor in Sexuality Studies. He will be studying this summer in Copenhagen, Denmark through DIS (Danish Institute for Study Abroad).

Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad or internship program. The Gilman scholarship supports American undergraduate students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad and, since 2001, has enabled more than 24,000 outstanding Americans of diverse backgrounds to engage in a meaningful educational experience abroad. The program has successfully broadened U.S. participation in study abroad, while emphasizing countries and regions where fewer Americans traditionally study. The Gilman Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Since 2008, fifty six Augsburg students have received Gilman scholarships, totaling $220,500.

Year End Pay Stub Review – For all 2018 faculty, staff and student workers.

submitted by ueckerk@augsburg.edu

In preparation for year-end 2018, we ask each employee to review the items below and contact us with any changes or updates to your personal information that we have on file.

1) Verify the Name and Social Security Number on your pay stub.

In order for the Social Security Administration to properly post your earnings, the name on your pay stub must match the name on your social security card. If your name has changed legally (marriage, divorce, etc.) and it does not match your pay stub, please submit a copy of a social security card displaying the correct name to Human Resources to update your employment record.

To help protect your identity, your social security number (SSN) is not normally printed on your pay stub. We are including it on the 12/07/18 and 12/21/18 pay stubs so the SSN may be verified. Please take a look at your pay stub and verify that the correct SSN is listed. If the Social Security Number on your pay stub is incorrect, please notify HR/Payroll immediately.

2) Verify the address on your pay stub

W-2 forms will be mailed and available online by January 31, 2019, however we do request that you review the address listed on your pay stub to ensure we have your correct address on file. If address corrections are needed please contact Human Resources. HR@augsburg.edu

3) Check your tax withholdings

The tax withholdings you are currently claiming are printed on the bottom left section of your pay stub. If you wish to change your tax withholdings, please complete a new federal W-4 form and submit to the Payroll office.

If you need any further assistance please contact Payroll at payroll@augsburg.edu. Thank you and have a safe and happy holiday!

Augsburg Day Student Government: Draft Action Plan on Current Institutional Climate and Survey

submitted by bakere@augsburg.edu

This action plan drafted by members of Augsburg Day Student Government (ADSG) summarizes the student feedback that was gathered during a panel-led discussion held on November 29th titled “What’s Next?” by ADSG.

The panel-led discussion consisted of the Student Body President facilitating discussion and six other representatives of ADSG responding to ideas and interests presented by students. Students who were in attendance voiced their expectations of ADSG and the university’s administration.

This document has four sections: what feedback has come from students, what is currently being addressed by non-ADSG parties, what changes ADSG wants to see occur, and ADSG actions/communications/timeline.

There is also a link to a survey that students may fill out with any further comments, feedback, ideas or concerns.

New University Course Survey ready for use

submitted by kaivola@augsburg.edu

Faculty,
The new University Course Survey is now in the hands of students. Remember that the recently faculty-approved form is shorter and focuses squarely on student perceptions of their course experiences. Faculty are expected to dedicate 5-10 minutes of class time to completing the form. Be sure to let students know ahead of time (and post on your Moodle site) so they can bring a mobile device; since forms are voluntary, the faculty member must leave the room for this activity. A recommended protocol is included in a message from the University Course Survey system. Using class time boosts response rates to an acceptable level, thus poor response rates are likely to be a failure to follow this protocol.

We also encourage good practice in having faculty collect their own customized data on pedagogy, assignments, and recommendations for future changes in the course using Moodle or pen and paper during class time.

Questions can be directed to Scott Krajewski, krajewsk@augsburg.edu or Diane Pike, pike@augsburg.edu. Chairs are asked to please make sure all adjunct faculty are informed about and supported in this process.

Thank you
Karen
