Bridget grew up watching her older brother’s addiction progress from his age of 15 until his sudden death last year at age 30. This is an intimate view into the life of a Minnesota resident and one of the 72,000 overdose deaths of 2017. She will speak of how addiction impacts the person suffering as well as those that love them, and tie this into her passion for healthcare and incarceration in hopes to educate, create more empathy, and de-stigmatize addiction

How does one create a set of assignments that build upon one another and combine into a more in-depth and meaningful learning experience? In this session, James Vela-McConnell (Sociology) will share examples of integrated assignments in both lower and upper division courses TODAY from 3:30 to 4:30 PM in OGC 100. Participants will brainstorm ideas for scaffolding learning experiences within their own courses. Adjunct instructors on contract this semester who attend this event are eligible for a $50 stipend. We’ll also have this session available remotely via Zoom.

The MN Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for debate judges and hospitality volunteers for its upcoming high school debate tournaments.
No debate experience? No problem. We train volunteers at every tournament.
What Hospitality Volunteers Do:
● Greet & guide kids, coaches, and judges as they arrive at tournaments
● Answer questions and assist with wayfinding at tournament sites
● Distribute goody bags to students and thank-you gifts to our judges
What Judges Do:
● Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
● Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
● Choose the winner of each debate!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities.
We are looking for a few excellent folks who can help us deliver great debate tournaments for MN Urban Debate League high schoolers this semester and middle schoolers next semester.
Pay: $11.00/hr *+ Free Food!
● (Non-Augsburg students will receive $11/hr, Augsburg students will receive the Augsburg student employment rate)
● You do not have to be a student to do tournament support.
Job Duties:
● Post signage and tournament information throughout building
● Carry supplies (food and materials) in and out of location
● Help set-up supplies and Clean-up
● Help greet volunteers
● Ballot Runner – go to classrooms pick-up and return debate ballots
Job Qualifications:
● Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs and walk significant distance (within a school building)
● Pass a background check
● Have great customer relation skills – welcoming to volunteers, students and coaches
● Be reliable and able to get to tournament location; be professional in your conduct with students and staff.

Due to current construction in the Augsburg ice arena, open ice time is available for all students at the Highland Arena (800 Snelling Ave S, St Paul, MN 55116) from 4:20 to 5:20 p.m. The week of September 24th, the facility is reserved Monday and Wednesday for men’s open hockey, while Tuesday and Thursday will be for women’s open hockey. Until the completion of Augsburg Rink A, the M/W and T/Th schedule will alternate weekly between men’s open hockey and women’s open hockey. All students are welcome to participate and will need to provide their own gear (skates, helmet, pads, etc.).

The CTL fellows for Diversity and Inclusion would like to invite you to join our fall book group where we will read and discuss Where we Stand: Class matters by bell hooks. This text and our discussion of it will allow us to explore how issues of race, class, and gender are intertwined. This will be an opportunity for faculty and staff to understand how everyday interactions and social structures both reproduce and deny the class hierarchy.

At this moment when racism and violence against communities of color is unapologetically visible, it is necessary to look at how academic institutions and our own practice may be perpetuating colonizing structures. This workshop on decolonizing pedagogies will feature shared vocabulary building, embodied practice, and small group discussions. Participants will leave with deepened understanding of colonial structures and how they manifest in our work in addition to strategies for decolonizing different aspects of our teaching.

Join us for a four-part immersion presentation showcasing faculty expertise in active learning and engagement with students on Thursday, October 4 from 1:50 to 3:00 PM in the East Commons (Christensen Center). Lori Hale (Religion), Jennifer Diaz (Education), Matthew Maruggi (Religion), and Lyz Wendland (Art) will offer immersion experiences designed to teach techniques and strategies for active learning for students. Augsburg Native American Film Series Event October 8: Please join us for the international opening of The Eagle and The Condor–From Standing Rock with Love. Our evening event will include a virtual introduction from the filmmaker (Kahstosera’a Paulette Moore), broadcast globally to supporters like the Augsburg Native American Film Series, and stories from our students and community members who participated in the fight against DAPL. We look forward to hearing your stories of Standing Rock as part of our conversation after the film.
The film is based around prophecy of the Eagle and Condor that originates with nations from the South and features ceremony held at the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) site on Indigenous People’s Day, October 10th, 2016. The ancient prophecy predicted the epic Standing Rock water protection actions – and continues to challenge all to identify and unite our gifts and power.

Course Evaluation Survey Information Sessions
Faculty, staff, and students, are invited to any and all of 3 information sessions in advance of the October 10th faculty meeting to vote on adopting a new end of term survey form for university wide evaluation of courses. Based on over a year of analysis of research, pilot testing, and input from students and colleagues, this form is designed to measure student satisfaction with course experiences. It is not a form designed to measure teaching effectiveness or student learning; those purposes will be served through customized department and individual faculty data collection.

Due to current construction in the Augsburg ice arena, open ice time is available for all students at the Highland Arena (800 Snelling Ave S, St Paul, MN 55116) from 4:20 to 5:20 p.m. The week of September 24th, the facility is reserved Monday and Wednesday for men’s open hockey, while Tuesday and Thursday will be for women’s open hockey. Until the completion of Augsburg Rink A, the M/W and T/Th schedule will alternate weekly between men’s open hockey and women’s open hockey. All students are welcome to participate and will need to provide their own gear (skates, helmet, pads, etc.).

This month, Dr. Nadja Zgonik of the University of Ljubljana has been at Augsburg studying the life and work of John Jager, a Slovenian-born architect who had a long and interesting career in Minnesota, from his 1902 arrival until his death in 1959. Educated in Vienna in the 1890s, Jager worked in Europe and Asia before coming to Minneapolis. His fascinating life is chronicled in materials at the Northwest Architectural Archives at the University of Minnesota and especially in an extensive collection sent to Slovenia about fifty years ago.
Professor Zgonik will discuss Jager’s early work and the Slovenian archive, including interesting views of a number of Minnesota projects. Her talk will be held at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, September 26, in Hagfors 150. The event is co-sponsored by the Minnesota Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians.

DEMOCRACY AUGSBURG TEACH-IN: LESSONS FROM THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
Join us Tuesday, September 25 at 4:00 p.m. in Hagfors 151 when Harry Boyte delivers the first Democracy Augsburg Teach-in of the year, Addressing the Crisis in Democracy- Lessons from the civil rights movement. Harry Boyte, Senior Scholar in Public Work Philosophy at the Sabo Center, served as a field secretary for Rev. Martin Luther King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the southern freedom movement. He will lift up lessons from the movement, including the key role young people played, and relate them to our current crisis in democracy.

The MN Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for debate judges and hospitality volunteers for its upcoming high school debate tournaments.
You do not need debate experience to judge! We train volunteers at every tournament.
What Judges Do:
● Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
● Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
● Choose the winner of each debate!

Campus Ministry welcomes Lars Anderson, a recent alumni of the Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) program of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, to present in chapel, Tuesday 25th at 11:30. Lars served in the program in 2017-18 in Palestine. YAGMs serve in the spirit of accompaniment, walking alongside global companions in a manner that practices mutuality, interdependence and solidarity. Areas of service include, but are not limited to, health and development, congregational ministry, human rights, education, homelessness, addiction recovery, women’s issues and children and youth. Although YAGM is a church-based program, participants do not need to be Christian. Come, hear, and explore if YAGM is an opportunity for you.

Augsburg has reached their parking capacity so Parking Services would like to notify that current requests for parking permits are unfortunately being denied. The Department of Public Safety is working to find solutions moving forward to be able to accommodate our community as best as possible. If you have a visitor or guest coming to campus, lot E is available for short term visits, up to 3 hours per day. Visitors need to come to the Public Safety window in the Urness/Mortensen lobby to obtain a permit. This lot is also a first come, first serve basis and there are only a limited number each day we can issue out. If it is full when they arrive, we do not have any additional on campus parking available to them.
Please refer your guest(s) to surrounding city street areas with the understanding that they will have to abide by the city’s restrictions and be subject to their enforcement if found in violation. There are pay ramps nearby at the U of M campus that your visitors will be welcome to use. We also encourage you to advise your guests and visitors to use alternate transit options.

How does one create a set of assignments that build upon one another and combine into a more in-depth and meaningful learning experience? In this session, James Vela-McConnell (Sociology) will share examples of integrated assignments in both lower and upper division courses on Wednesday, September 26 from 3:30 to 4:30 PM in OGC 100. Participants will brainstorm ideas for scaffolding learning experiences within their own courses. Adjunct instructors on contract this semester who attend this event are eligible for a $50 stipend. The MN Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for debate judges and hospitality volunteers for its upcoming high school debate tournaments.
You do not need debate experience to judge! We train volunteers at every tournament.
What Judges Do:
● Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
● Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
● Choose the winner of each debate!

If so, STEM Peer Mentoring wants you!
STEM Peer Mentoring is a student-led mentoring program and official Augsburg student organization, which focuses on providing support to first year, second year and transfer students as they navigate their academic and career life in preparation for success inside and outside of the classroom. (Augsburg’s STEM majors are: biology, bio-psychology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics and physics). Students are matched according to their major and information they provide on the STEM Peer Mentoring Application (See link below).
Students in the program are asked to commit 5-6 hours/month of involvement as they meet one-on-one with their mentee/mentor, attend orientation and group meetings, go to STEM events and/or participate in fun, de-stress activities!

Are you an underrepresented student pursuing a degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)? If so, you might be eligible to participate in LSAMP North Star STEM (NSS). Augsburg’s LSAMP NSS program is designed to help STEM students succeed through peer mentoring, workshops, research opportunities, industry visits, and conference travel. LSAMP NSS funding opportunities include:
-Professional development stipends (up to $500) for participation in LSAMP NSS programming
-Travel funding for professional STEM conferences (including airfare and lodging)
-Academic year or summer research funding (contingent on mentor match)
STEM majors at Augsburg: biology, bio-psychology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, physics.
LSAMP NSS eligibility:
(1) Full-time student pursuing a STEM major.
(2) US citizen or permanent resident.
(3) Underrepresented in STEM as defined by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This includes being Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American, Alaska Native or Pacific Islander.
The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is an initiative funded by the NSF to support underrepresented students pursuing a STEM degree. Minnesota’s LSAMP program is called the North Star STEM Alliance and includes 17 colleges, universities and community organizations.

As part of the University’s increased internationalization efforts, the Center for Global Education & Experience staff are visiting classes across campus to spread the word to your students about the many study, internship, and research options available to them both abroad and off-campus around the US.
Can you spare 5-10 minutes in your class(es) in Fall semester for a message about study abroad/away programs? If so, please request a visit to your class online!
We can customize our message based on your course content, and on your majors’ needs and interests. We can address questions about scholarships, various length programs (some are better for WEC/AU students, STEM, Honors, athletes, etc) and other issues you might identify. Stop by and learn about registering to vote, where to vote, who’s on the ballot – and the “Ballot Bowl.” The Ballot Bowl is hosted by the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office, to encourage college and university students to vote! The never-ending showdown between Baby Boomers and Millennials will finally come to an end with the help of Augsburg’s class of 1968. Find out more about the huge, and hugely influential, generation with Homecoming 2018’s first Auggie Talk that will occur on Friday, October, 12 from 3:30pm-4:15pm in Sateren Auditorium. All are welcome!
This talk is hosted by the 50-year reunion class of 1968. Surprisingly you’ll find how much the two generations have in common! Five members of the class of 1968 will each present a 3-5 minute story of how their time at Augsburg influenced what they have done personally and professionally over the past 50 years. Each has pursued different paths since leaving Augsburg while impacting the world in meaningful ways. Topics will range from Vietnam to Social Activism to Diversity.

Augsburg has reached their parking capacity so Parking Services would like to notify that current requests for parking permits are unfortunately being denied. The Department of Public Safety is working to find solutions moving forward to be able to accommodate our community as best as possible. We thank you for your patience during this time and through the busy transition into the new academic year.
If you have a visitor or guest coming to campus, lot E is available for short term visits, up to 3 hours per day. Visitors need to come to the Public Safety window in the Urness/Mortensen lobby to obtain a permit. This lot is also a first come, first serve basis and there are only a limited number each day we can issue out. If it is full when they arrive, we do not have any additional on campus parking available to them.
Please refer your guest(s) to surrounding city street areas with the understanding that they will have to abide by the city’s restrictions and be subject to their enforcement if found in violation. There are pay ramps nearby at the U of M campus that your visitors will be welcome to use. We also encourage you to advise your guests and visitors to use alternate transit options.

First-year Physics students and members of Society of Physics Students (SPS)will be gathering in the Physics Lounge, which is located in HC 130 (Hagfors Center, 1st floor, North wing), at 4:30pm to participate in a high-powered rocketry video conference.
We strongly encourage and welcome students, regardless of their major, who are interested in building/launching rockets to come join our team and participate in this conference! It will be a valuable learning experience and will provide a great opportunity for those interested in high-powered rocketry.

How does one create a set of assignments that build upon one another and combine into a more in-depth and meaningful learning experience? In this session, James Vela-McConnell (Sociology) will share examples of integrated assignments in both lower and upper division courses on Wednesday, September 26 from 3:30 to 4:30 PM in OGC 100. Participants will brainstorm ideas for scaffolding learning experiences within their own courses. Adjunct instructors on contract this semester who attend this event are eligible for a $50 stipend. We’ll also have this session available remotely via Zoom.
