eLearning Update – Artificial Intelligence Assessment Scale

Let’s take a look at the Artificial Intelligence Assessment Scale (AIAS): A Framework for Ethical Integration of Generative AI in Educational Assessment. (2024). Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice, 21(06). Perkins, Furze, Roe & MacVaugh (2024).

The AIAS offers the 5 following examples of AI usage in the classroom:

1. No AI – You must not use AI at any point during the assessment. You must demonstrate your core skills and knowledge.

2. Ideas and Structure – AI can be used in the assessment for brainstorming, creating structures, and generating ideas for improving work. No AI content is allowed in the final submission.

3. AI Editing – AI may be used to make improvements to the clarity or quality of student created work to improve the final output, but no new content can be created using AI. AI can be used, but your original work with no AI content must be provided in an appendix.

4. AI + Human Evolution – AI is used to complete certain elements of the task, with students providing discussion or commentary on the AI-generated content. This level requires critical engagement with AI generated content and evaluating its output. You may use AI to complete specific tasks in your assessment. Any AI created content must be cited.

5. Full AI – AI should be used as a ‘co-pilot’ in order to meet the requirements of the assessment, allowing for a collaborative approach with AI and enhancing creativity. You may use AI throughout your assessment to support your own work and do not have to specify which content is AI generated.

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) March | February 14 | 11 a.m.- 2 p.m

The annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) March will take place February 14 2025 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. This march honors Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Men, Boys, Two-Spirit and LGBTQI+ Relatives. The march will begin at the Minneapolis American Indian Center and feature a variety of speakers from the community.

The 2025 MMIR March is a collaborative effort between the Minnesota Indian Women Sexual Assault Coalition, the Minneapolis American Indian Center, the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center, the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis, the Native American Community Development Institute, Wakemup Productions, the Minnesota Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Office, Minneapolis Public Schools American Indian Education, the Many Shields Society and the Little Earth Protectors.

During Day at the Capitol, you’ll attend a Minnesota State Grant advocacy and lobbying training with student advocates from Augsburg and other Minnesota private colleges. Then you’ll meet with legislators and have lunch at the Capitol. The Minnesota Private College Council will host a Q&A session with public policy experts and policymakers and will provide everything you need to be a successful advocate. We will take the light rail from campus to and from the Capitol together. Plus, free lunch!

URGO Summer Research Phase 1 Applications Due February 17

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome!
Phase 1 of the applications are due February 17th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!

The URGO Summer Research/Creative Activity Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 19th – August 1st) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. The Biology Dept. Greenhouse is holding its annual plant sale.

Where: Lobby of the Christensen Center

We’ll have easy-care houseplants such as goldfish vines, spiderworts and raindrop peperomia. We’ll also have lots of cacti and succulents, including some varieties not often seen on the market, like Somalian aloes. A select number of mature specimens will be for sale for those houseplant afficionados. Stocks of the most desirable species are limited, so get there early!

Cash, PayPal or Venmo accepted. Plant prices start at just $5. Funds raised directly support greenhouse operations and allow us to grow and care for our special plant collections.

Tian Is Opening TOMORROW

Who owns history? And who is allowed to tell its stories? The student-written piece Tian centers around these fundamental questions. This conflict becomes clear when the audience is led through the life of romantic poet Karoline von Günderrode by two characters with two very different claims to Karoline’s story: Bettine von Arnim, contemporary and close friend of Karoline, who wants to paint a strong, feminist picture; and the Playwright whose goal is to create an enticing, heart-wrenching play. The audience finds themselves in the in-betweens of history, whilst being part of Karoline’s personal journey filled with struggles, doubt, and dreams.

The performance dates are the 13th, 14th, 15th of February at 7:00PM, and the 16th at 3:00pm.

February 26: Norwegian Bi-Partisan Arctic Parliamentary Delegation: Dialogue on Sustainability and Policy

A Norwegian delegation from the Arctic Parliamentary Cooperation will visit Augsburg University on February 26. The group consists of 5-6 members from the parliament, representing the Labour Party, the Conservative and Progressive Party, Socialist Left Party, and the Center Party. The cooperation was established (in 2009) due to the increasing interest in Arctic issues, both within the Arctic countries themselves and from countries outside the region. Among the most important areas of cooperation include the fields of energy, climate change and the environment, maritime transport, health and education.

In addition to providing information about the Arctic Cooperation, this group will share knowledge and expertise on Norwegian, European and world politics, the role of NATO and the United Nations, and they will address the benefits of bi-partisan collaborations.

Embodying Antiracism: First Meeting this Thursday, February 13 at Noon

Embodying Racism: A Space to Practice

This is a new affinity group that is an invitation for white-identifying faculty, staff, and administrators to explore embodying anti-racism through conversation, somatic and physical practices, and the lens of Freirean pedagogy. Everyone learns, everyone teaches.

We will have our first meeting this Thursday, February 13, from 12:00-1:00pm in Lindell Library 301. Join us for our first meeting where we’ll introduce ourselves and discuss our interests and possibilities for what we envision this group to be. We’ll also go over some logistics like meeting times and offer a short, simple practice as a way to experience some of the work we we might do together.

We have loved this house for 20+ years and hope you will too!

The lease will be for 12 months with the potential of it becoming a long-term relationship.

Present Your Research at Zyzzogeton – Register by February 18

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium showcases the work of over 50 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on Tuesday, April 15, 3:00-4:30 PM in Hagfors Center. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register using the link below by February 18.

You must have approval from your faculty mentor before registering for Zyzzogeton. If you do not have a formal abstract at this point, please provide a brief description of your research instead. You will have the opportunity to submit a final abstract/make final edits prior to the event. Abstracts will be published on the URGO website.

NOTE: If you’re planning to co-present with another student(s), only one of you needs to register. Be sure to list their names and emails and indicate that they will be co-presenters where specified on the form. All presenters will be included in event correspondence.

Study Spanish and Mexican Culture This Summer

Augsburg’s CGEE program offers an engaging and community-based summer experience with a focus on Spanish language and Mexican culture. Choose and/or combine courses from 3 1/2 week sessions.

All students earn the Global Competence Certificate (GCC) – a valuable addition to your resume – and can tailor their experience with specialized courses and internships in Spanish for Business, Spanish for Healthcare Professionals, Mexican Civilizations and Cultures, and Mexican Literature.

In addition to your coursework, you will:

Engage with a host family. And explore Mexico City and local archeological sites and museums.

Travel to Mexico City on an included program excursion

Learn from guest speakers who provide insights into history, culture, and social justice issues

The Biology Dept. Greenhouse is holding its annual plant sale.

Date: Thursday, February 13
Time: 10 a.m. — 2 p.m. (or sold out)
Where: Lobby of the Christensen Center

We’ll have easy-care houseplants such as goldfish vines, spiderworts and raindrop peperomia. We’ll also have lots of cacti and succulents, including some varieties not often seen on the market, like Somalian aloes. A select number of mature specimens will be for sale for those houseplant afficionados. Stocks of the most desirable species are limited, so get there early!

Cash, PayPal or Venmo accepted. Plant prices start at just $5. Funds raised directly support greenhouse operations and allow us to grow and care for our special plant collections.

The annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) March will take place February 14 2025 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. This march honors Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Men, Boys, Two-Spirit and LGBTQI+ Relatives. The march will begin at the Minneapolis American Indian Center and feature a variety of speakers from the community.

The 2025 MMIR March is a collaborative effort between the Minnesota Indian Women Sexual Assault Coalition, the Minneapolis American Indian Center, the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center, the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis, the Native American Community Development Institute, Wakemup Productions, the Minnesota Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Office, Minneapolis Public Schools American Indian Education, the Many Shields Society and the Little Earth Protectors.

I am conducting a research study about how episode patterns in schizophrenia may affect stigmatization levels among mental health practitioners and the general public in Minnesota, and I would like to include you in my research. Who owns history? And who is allowed to tell its stories? The student-written piece “Tian” centers around these fundamental questions. This conflict becomes clear when the audience is led through the life of romantic poet Karoline von Günderrode by two characters with two very different claims to Karoline’s story: Bettine von Arnim, contemporary and close friend of Karoline, who wants to paint a strong, feminist picture; and the Playwright whose goal is to create an enticing, heart-wrenching play. The audience finds themselves in the in-betweens of history, whilst being part of Karoline’s personal journey filled with struggles, doubt, and dreams.

The Interfaith Scholars program is a yearlong course and service learning opportunity taught by the Interfaith Institute’s Executive Director and Professor of Religion, Najeeba Syeed.

Interfaith Scholars will explore the religious diversity of the Augsburg student body, the wider Twin Cities community, and the United States by learning from guest speakers from religious communities, business professionals, and other leaders across various sectors. Students may also be engaged in community service learning, and participating in and attending events on behalf of the program. Participants will gain leadership skills by learning and practicing how to converse respectfully with others about what they believe, why it matters, and how it propels us to service in the world.

Students with any religious or spiritual worldview as well as students without a connection to a religious tradition are encouraged to apply.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome!
Phase 1 of the applications are due February 17th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!
The URGO Summer Research/Creative Activity Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 19th – August 1st) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.
URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. New Staff Position: Assistive Technology and Accommodations Specialist

Summary of Position

In collaboration with the Director and Disability Specialists, the Assistive Technology & Accommodations Specialist develops the strategic vision and oversees the implementation of accommodations for students with disabilities as well as supervises student employees within the department. They manage all aspects of assistive technology, alternative format textbooks and course materials, testing accommodations, and note taking. This position also works closely with the CLASS/Disability Resources Director to develop, implement and evaluate systems and processes that support the provision of accommodations. They are a subject matter expert and partner with campus stakeholders to consult on accessible web and information technology.

Primary Responsibilities

– Conduct Assistive Technology assessments with students and partner with them to implement, install, train, and follow up on recommendations.
– Facilitate and manage the production and evaluation of alternative format textbooks and course materials; receive requests; convert materials, work to ensure students receive materials in a timely manner; collaborate with bookstore and faculty.
– Facilitate and supervise provision of testing accommodations for students; schedule tests including proctors and assistive technology; proctor as necessary.
– Hire, train, and supervise student workers including test proctors, note takers, lab and office assistants; maintain work-study budget.
– Research, preview, evaluate, and purchase Assistive Technology.
– Budget oversight responsibilities for some restricted and/or endowed funds.
– Provide Web Accessibility guidance and consultation across campus.

Additional Responsibilities

– Maintain, track usage, upgrade, and replace Assistive technology resources as necessary.
– Monitor accommodation implementation systems and update as necessary.
– All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).

Work Environment and Physical Demands

– Typical work environment is an office. Sedentary work for long periods of time.
– Regular computer and phone use.

Universities and colleges often tell stories about the ways in which they have transformed in order to include and support diverse students. These stories are told through promotional and recruitment materials, values and mission statements, and university branding. It is well documented, however, that institutions maintain themselves, leaving the underlying structures of oppression and exclusion untouched (Ahmed, 2012).

Through this study, I examine the storied conflict between institutions and students, placing the lives of students in direct dialogue with the story of an institution. This study presents stories from multiple students, including those who are working to enact change at their institution. These stories are all being lived and told by students attending an institution that is striving to tell a story of growth and change. Examining these stories side by side, interweaving the stories of students with those of the institution, contributes to our understanding of the complex ways in which students experience equity and inequity, the complex ways in which institutions impact their experiences, and the complicated, untidy, messy work of striving toward equity when systems and structures tend to function “as usual” (Ahmed, 2017b).

Hello, my name is Ashley Wurster and I am currently a clinical psychology doctoral student at Augsburg University. I am conducting a research study about how episode patterns in schizophrenia may affect stigmatization levels among mental health practitioners and the general public in Minnesota, and I would like to include you in my research. The study will be completed exclusively online and consist of a survey about your demographics and your experiences with and attitudes on schizophrenia/severe mental illnesses. It should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. To thank you for your participation, there will be an option at the end of the survey to have a $2 bill mailed to you. URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome!
Phase 1 of the applications are due February 17th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!

The URGO Summer Research/Creative Activity Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 19th – August 1st) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Present Your Research at Zyzzogeton – Register by February 18

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium showcases the work of over 50 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on Tuesday, April 15, 3:00-4:30 PM in Hagfors Center. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register using the link below by February 18.

You must have approval from your faculty mentor before registering for Zyzzogeton. If you do not have a formal abstract at this point, please provide a brief description of your research instead. You will have the opportunity to submit a final abstract/make final edits prior to the event. Abstracts will be published on the URGO website.

NOTE: If you’re planning to co-present with another student(s), only one of you needs to register. Be sure to list their names and emails and indicate that they will be co-presenters where specified on the form. All presenters will be included in event correspondence.

Join us for the opening day of the Weisman Art Museum’s spring exhibition, SEEN, presented in collaboration with We Are All Criminals. This exhibition highlights the work of artists inside the carceral system, in partnership with artists on the outside. Opening day will feature drop-in artist activations in the galleries, a reading library, self-guided tours, and light bites and beverages.

Weisman Art Museum presents SEEN, an exhibition created as part of a years-long collaboration with We Are All Criminals (WAAC), curated by WAAC director and founder, Emily Baxter. SEEN features currently incarcerated artists in collaboration with artists, activists, and academics in the Twin Cities community. Together they explore issues of incarceration, isolation, healing, and coming home. Representing a range of cultural, personal, and professional backgrounds and diverse forms of artistic expression, people on the “inside” partnered with people on the “outside” based on shared creative curiosities and personal affinities. This exhibition is arranged across two galleries to evoke the experiences of “inside” (carceral) and “outside” (healing and community).

The collaborative exhibition SEEN and its related public programs aim to illuminate the effects of mass incarceration by clearing the pathways for people behind bars to have their voices heard, faces seen, and humanity recognized.

MSCS students Fatima Abdi, Krystal Bollinger, Leah Tift, and Portia Wodarz attended the Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics January 31 – February 2 at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. The conference presenters included professional mathematicians from Google, the National Science Foundation, SandboxAQ, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Bryan Health, Notre Dame, the National Security Agency, and more.
