Augsburg TRIO/Student Support Services (SSS) Grant Renewed

submitted by rodrig@augsburg.edu

Augsburg University, chosen by the U.S. Department of Education to receive a renewal TRIO grant for Student Support Services (SSS) for 2025-2030, will receive $306,511 annually for five years, totaling $1,532,555, contingent on federal funding. This grant, which Augsburg has had since 2001, aims to enhance student support, assist first-generation, low-income, and disabled students in achieving success, persistence, and graduation. Augsburg TRIO/SSS provides comprehensive services, including academic advising, financial literacy, career exploration, and assistance. The team works directly with over 160 students and indirectly with many others, enhancing academic success and increasing the likelihood of graduation within six years with minimal debt. Augsburg is also home to TRIO McNair Scholars.

TRIO SSS, one of eight federal TRIO programs funded under the Higher Education Act of 1965, removes social, academic, and cultural barriers to higher education. Since its inception in 1968, it has helped millions of low-income, first-generation students graduate, contributing to their communities and the economy.

President Paul Pribbenow and Provost & Senior VP for Academic and Student Affairs, Paula O’Loughlin, have supported the program’s mission. Amanda Burgess and Catherine Maun, Student Financial Services, have also committed to the program and its students.

The grant writing team, including Katy Hahn, John Anderson, Kelsey Richardson Blackwell, Kevin Cheatham, and Tina Tavera, has secured the grant through their hard work and expertise.

Visit the Augsburg TRIO/SSS website for more information.

All Eyes on Augsburg’s Corpse Flower

submitted by farrisr@augsburg.edu

The hot, sweaty weather of July has brought a truly extraordinary botanical curiosity out of dormancy. The giant corpse flower, or titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum), is famous for producing an enormous, sinister, powerfully malodorous, but thankfully short-lived bloom. At 94 inches tall as of July 14, Augsburg’s very own corpse flower is getting ready to put on its first floral display as soon as this week!

Follow @augsburg_greenhouse on Instagram for updates and information about viewing (and smelling) “Lady Gag-Ugh” in bloom.

TODAY – Free Show – Sinkane – Sudanese Afrofuturist Funk Rocker at the Cedar Cultural Center

submitted by gilmerje@augsburg.edu

Start: 6:00 PM / End: 8:00 PM / All Ages
Mixed Seated and Standing + Bring Your Own Chair

Concessions will be available for purchase from The Cedar, and food from local and neighbourhood restaurants will be available for purchase.

Sinkane fuses elements of krautrock, electronica, reggae, free jazz and funk rock with Sudanese pop to create music inspired by his experiences. Despite–or rather, because of–his unclassifiable sound, the City Slang signee is championed by a multitude of musical legends. Prior to embarking on his solo career, he worked with Eleanor Friedberger, Caribou, of Montreal, Born Ruffians, and Yeasayer as a session musician. As Band Leader and Music Director of the Atomic Bomb! He’s collaborated with rotating group members including David Byrne, Money Mark, Damon Albarn, Dev Hynes, Alexis Taylor, Amadou and Mariam, Jamie Lidell, Pharoah Sanders, Joshua Redman, among others.

Gallab’s music is his personal story, but it’s also everyone’s story. This truly universal approach leaves no room for irony or cynicism. Fueled by Gallab’s very heartbeat, it erupts into an ambitious, dazzling sound only conceivable by Sinkane.

Employee Action Required: ADP Payroll Transition

submitted by payroll@augsburg.edu

Augsburg is moving to ADP Payroll processing, which will impact access to new pay statements (currently referred to as payslips). This transition is occurring as our current system, Unit4, no longer supports payroll tax updates. This shift is a crucial step in ensuring compliance with evolving payroll tax regulations and serves as an interim step in the transition to a new ERP, with an anticipated implementation in 2027.

All employees must register for an ADP account to access pay statements and make changes to direct deposit or W-4 tax withholding. More information on creating a new account has been shared via email. Contact payroll@augsburg.edu with any questions.

Vocation of Lutheran Higher Education Confernce – July 14-16, 2025

submitted by dames@augsburg.edu

This summer Augsburg will again host the annual Vocation of Lutheran Higher Education Conference. Each year, members of Lutheran colleges and universities gather to explore the distinctive roles we play in higher education. The theme of the 2025 conference “Ethical Leadership in a Changing World.” The conference aligns with NECU’s mission of preparing students for lives of leadership and service through a theologically rooted understanding of vocation. Ethical leadership—grounded in Lutheran traditions of grace, justice, and community—ensures development of the character and discernment to lead in ways that promote the common good. Join us as we explore how Lutheran higher education can equip the next generation of leaders to navigate ethical challenges with integrity and faith.

Highlights include a keynote address by Dr. Walter Fluker, a renowned scholar and leader in ethics and leadership studies, who will challenge participants to consider how vocation and values-based leadership intersect in today’s complex world. His insights will provide a foundation for discussions on how NECU institutions can cultivate ethical leaders who serve with wisdom, courage, and a deep sense of purpose
The conference begins at 5:00 pm on Monday, July 14 and ends at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, July 16.

The registration fee is waived for Augsburg participants and meals (lunch and dinner) are provided to Augsburg participants free of charge. The deadline for registration is Monday, June 23. If you have questions about registration, please contact Janice Dames (x1732 or dames@augsburg.edu).

From Nina:
“Help Support My Journey

I’m incredibly grateful for any support, whether through a donation or by sharing this with others. Every bit helps me stay focused on training and competing at my best while giving back to the next generation.

As a second-generation Cameroonian immigrant and first-generation college graduate, I know what it means to push through challenges. From earning my citizenship to chasing world-level goals, I’ve worked hard to show what’s possible. I’ve coached at Fargo and led camps, and I’ll continue to mentor and inspire young athletes to believe in themselves and keep showing up. I want to show young athletes that it is possible to rise through hard work, faith, and dedication.

Thank you so much for your time, kindness, and belief in my journey.”

Scam Awareness

submitted by hartkop1@augsburg.edu

It has come to our attention that people are attempting to use phone numbers similar to the Department of Public Safety in order to illicit more legitimate responses to scams. Please be aware, the Department of Public Safety will not call you in regards to any fines or fees. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the Department of Public Safety and you are uncertain. Hang up and call 612-330-1717 OR 1717 from any on campus phone.

Additionally, government agencies will not call you in regards to fees owed to them or warrants for your arrest. Then go to https://www.usa.gov/scams-and-fraud in order to report the suspected fraud to the FTC.

I-94 Construction Updates—Changes Coming in Mid-June

submitted by farrisr@augsburg.edu

MnDOT is continuing bridge preservation and maintenance work on five bridges along I-94 in Minneapolis, affecting travel time and highway access to Augsburg through August.

There will be a full weekend closure of I-94 between 35W and Huron Blvd in mid-June (exact date TBD) to shift lanes to the opposite side of the freeway. Traffic will continue to be reduced to two lanes in both directions through the summer.

Starting in mid-June, several ramps will be closed through August:

‒ Northbound I-35W to eastbound I-94
‒ S. 6th St. to eastbound I-94
‒ Huron Blvd. to eastbound I-94
‒ Eastbound I-94 to Huron Blvd.
‒ Riverside Ave. to eastbound I-94
‒ Cedar Ave. to eastbound I-94

During this time, the detour from northbound I-35W to eastbound I-94 will be via eastbound Hwy 36 and southbound I-35E.

The Riverside bridge over I-94 is expected to reopen around May 29. However, there will be another closure later in the summer (likely mid-July to early August).

Visit the MnDOT project website for more information.

Vocation of Lutheran Higher Education Conference July 14-16 at Augsburg

submitted by dames@augsburg.edu

His insights will provide a foundation for discussions on how NECU institutions can cultivate ethical leaders who serve with wisdom, courage, and a deep sense of purpose.

The conference begins at 5:00 pm on Monday, July 14 and ends at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, July 16.

The registration fee is waived for Augsburg participants and meals (lunch and dinner) are provided to Augsburg participants free of charge. The deadline for registration is Monday, June 16. If you have questions about registration, please contact Janice Dames (x1732 or dames@augsburg.edu).
