MNUDL Seeks East African Students and Professionals: Get Paid to Judge East African Debate League

submitted by froehlic@augsburg.edu

EARN $55 PER TOURNAMENT AS A DEBATE JUDGE!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students. Augsburg alum Awale Osman developed the Somali Debate Institute (now East African Debate League) to provide a culturally specific space for East African students to gain debate skills like public speaking, argumentation, and more. Our East African Debate League provides a space for East African students to celebrate their culture and community while learning debate skills.

This year’s debate topic, held in English, will center on the benefits and drawbacks of culturally-specific versus integrated education systems.

We’re looking for caring adults who have deep ties to the East African community (with or without debate experience!) to join us. As a judge, you’ll listen to students speak, provide constructive feedback, and choose a winner of each debate at weeknight tournaments.

You must be 18+ and pass a background check to volunteer and/or be paid $55/tournament as a debate judge.

Opportunities include:

Tues., December 17th: 3:15-7:15 PM
Tues., January 14th: 3:15-7:15 PM
Tues., February 4th: 3:15-7:15 PM

Sign up to be a debate judge here by clicking the shift of your choice: https://mnudl.augsburg.edu/volunteer-opportunities/

This is an excellent opportunity for East African-focused community or student groups to fundraise! Please reach out to Melekh Akintola at akintola@augsburg.edu for more information about fundraising as a group.

(Concerned about transportation? No problem! Thanks to our AmeriCorps Volunteer Generation Fund, we can book you an Uber for free! Please sign up and email our Volunteer Coordinator, Johan at udlvolunteers@augsburg.edu for more information.)

Advent Vespers Devotional Booklet Available Online

submitted by dames@augsburg.edu

Our Advent Vespers theme “See Revealed Creation’s Splendor” is a response to the shared sense of anxiety we feel around the ongoing climate crisis. Gus Speth, environmental lawyer and a US Advisor on climate change, writes, “I used to think that top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and climate change. I thought that thirty years of good science could address these problems. I was wrong…The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy, and to deal with these we need a cultural and spiritual transformation and we scientists don’t know how to do that…”
Our common concern for creation begins with a transformation of the heart, with a recognition that the world was created in Love and that we are called to live in harmony with it. For Christians, the birth of Jesus represents God’s full identification with, and within, the created world. In Christ, we “see revealed” God’s decision to dwell deeply within all living creatures. What good and joyful news!
Join us at Central Lutheran Church on Friday, December 6 at 7:00 pm or on Saturday, December 7 at 2:00 pm or 5:00 pm. Reservations at http://www.augsburg.edu/vespers.
As part of your Advent journey, Campus Ministry along with the Augsburg Community has created a devotional booklet with readings and reflections for each day of Advent. Booklets are available in the Campus Ministry office, Foss 104 or online at:

Important: Changes Coming to Augsburg’s Information Systems

submitted by krajewsk@augsburg.edu

Hello Augsburg students, faculty, and staff,

Over the next 4–5 years, Augsburg will be changing its primary information system (called Unit4 or formerly Agresso). This change will involve moving from our current campus-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system with numerous third-party systems to a unified, cloud-based ERP system.

This is a complex, multi-year, campus-wide project that involves how we manage student records, registration, human resources, finances, and more. Simply put, how you interact with Augsburg as a student or employee will be changing and improving once we have made the change. How you register for classes, record time worked and time off, submit grades for your courses, and so on—all will be modernized and, ideally, improved.

Such a change can be both exciting and daunting for people so we intend to support you in this transition with plenty of information, communication, and campus engagement as the project moves forward. The first steps will be to document business processes and engage key functional areas in preparation for campus visits by potential vendors this spring.

On the project web page https://sites.augsburg.edu/it/about-it/cloud-erp-project/ you’ll find information on project timeline, decision process, and project goals. That project page will grow and expand over time. If you have any questions about the project please feel free to reach out to me at any time.

Farewell and Gratitude for Charlotte Swanson

submitted by vachta@augsburg.edu

It is with mixed emotions that we announce that Charlotte Swanson, our Student Employment Specialist extraordinaire, has decided to embark on a new chapter. Charlotte’s official last day at Augsburg will be Friday December 6.

Charlotte joined Augsburg in January 2020, initially planning to support the Human Resources team for just a few months. Nearly five years later, her dedication, resourcefulness, and kindness have transformed our department and left a lasting mark on the university. From building and streamlining HR & student employment processes to offering compassionate guidance to countless Auggies and their supervisors, Charlotte has been a dependable and encouraging presence for everyone she’s worked with. Her ability to lead with care and enthusiasm (and a great playlist) has enriched the Human Resources team and the entire Augsburg community.

Charlotte’s impact will undoubtedly be felt for years to come, and her presence will be deeply missed. Please join us in celebrating her contributions and wishing her all the best for her next chapter.

We will celebrate Charlotte’s time at Augsburg with a farewell open house on Thursday, December 5th, from 1–3 PM in the Human Resources office (Memorial 20).

Still Need a Course Next Semester? Check Out the Youth Studies Minor and Classes

submitted by finka2@augsburg.edu

The Youth Studies minor is an interdisciplinary exploration of young peoples’ lived realities and opportunities to support them. The minor is designed to supplement a student’s current course of study particularly if that student is considering youth work in the future. Youth Studies students develop constructive and critical lenses for understanding society’s perceptions and treatment of young people. These lenses also shed light on young peoples’ processes of constructing meaning and culture. Students in this minor also gain practical skills through experiential learning opportunities. The underlying philosophy of the Youth Studies minor is one that supports young people’s voice and power. Young people are often targeted as a menace to society, but we see young people as gifted and powerful agents of positive change. Students in this minor will learn to take this approach to youth work into their chosen professions.

YST 320: Working with Children & Youth (4 credits, MWF) will be offered this spring with Professor Terrance Kwame-Ross. It will discuss interdisciplinary approaches to working with young people.

Looking for a Great Course to Take? Consider HIS 440: A History of Black Migrations to the U.S.

submitted by devries@augsburg.edu

HIS 440: Black Migrations to the United States
Spring 2024

Tuesday / Thursday 9:40 11:20AM (on campus)
Taught by Prof. Ibrahim Hirsi

An estimated 48 million people in the United States identify as Black. Their migrations—forced and voluntary—began in 1619 and continue to the present day. They came from Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and South and Central America. Many are descendants of enslaved people; others have emerged from places like Somalia and Ethiopia and Ghana and Jamaica. This course provides an overview of the journeys and experiences of African Americans and Black migrants and examines their unbroken ties—imagined and real—to the African continent. The course draws from a wide range of interdisciplinary sources, exposing students to major historical themes and significant Black figures. Through lectures, discussions, and thesis-driven writing assignments, students gain a substantive understanding of the African diaspora’s historical formation and develop critical reading and writing skills essential to successful careers. (Prerequisite: ENL 111)

Prof. Ibrahim Hirsi is finishing his Ph.D. in Immigration History at the University of Minnesota, after working as a journalist for the Sahan Journal, MinnPost, and Minnesota Public Radio. In addition to English, he speaks Somali, Arabic, and Swahili.
