Tian Auditions TODAY and TOMORROW

This year’s student-directed play “Tian” starts auditions today through tomorrow. Whether you are already experienced on stage, or want to dive into a new adventure – we are so excited to meet you. Play Description: Who owns history? And who is allowed to tell its stories? The student-written piece Tian centers around these fundamental questions. This conflict becomes clear when the audience is led through the life of romantic poet Karoline von Günderrode by two characters with two very different claims to Karoline’s story: Bettine von Arnim, contemporary and close friend of Karoline, who wants to paint a strong, feminist picture; and the Playwright whose goal is to create an enticing, heart wrenching play. The audience finds themselves in the in-betweens of history, whilst being part of Karoline’s personal journey filled with struggles, doubt, and dreams.

Staff Senate Hosts Gathering November 20

Now Hiring: MNUDL Program Site Visit Specialist

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to 1,400+ Twin Cities middle and high school students. We’re currently hiring for the MNUDL Program Site Visit Specialist position.

The MNUDL Program Site Visit Specialist & Tournament Support (contract position) – will be paid $25/hr to provide site visit and tournament support to MNUDL schools, focusing on new programs created from a Minnesota Humanities Center Grant.

You will support coaches (primarily new teachers) through site visits at practices.

You will also assist in tournament operations.

Maximum number of hours provided by the grant is 720, or approximately 30 hours per week – between mid-November through May. Practices and tournaments take place after school and in the evenings.

Welcome to Zinnia Koy, Our New Food Initiatives Program Manager

Please welcome Zinnia Koy as the new Food Initiatives Program Manager in the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship. Zinnia is an Auggie alum (Sociology) and worked with the Campus Kitchen as a student and then an AmeriCorps VISTA. In this new role, they will support many food initiatives around campus and in our neighborhood, including Campus Cupboard, Veggies for All, Greens for Good, Food Lab activities, and the Augsburg Community Garden. They are passionate about food justice and food sovereignty, as well as growing and cooking good food.

Zinnia is excited to get started in this new role. Visit them in the basement of Anderson Hall or reach out over email to connect with them. Welcome Zinnia!

Cyndi joined the staff of Augsburg University in 2017. Her role in the Office of the President provides frequent opportunities to connect and collaborate with multiple aspects of the Augsburg community including staff, faculty, students, Board of Regents and community partners.

Cyndi came to Augsburg from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter where she served as the Assistant Director for Church Relations. Prior to her work in higher education, she served at the Saint Paul Area Synod of the ELCA as Office and Events Manager for nearly ten years. Cyndi has a B.S. in Business Management from Minnesota State University, Mankato and is a 2021 graduate of Augsburg’s Master of Arts in Leadership program – proud to be an Auggie.

Rev. Jim Bear Jacobs in Chapel on Wednesday for Living Stories

On November 13, Rev. Jim Bear Jacobs will share his story in chapel at 10:40 am in our next installment of our “Living Stories” series co-sponsored by the Religion Department, Interfaith at Augsburg, and Campus Ministry. Born in St. Paul, he is a member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Nation, an American Indian tribe located in central Wisconsin. He has degrees in Pastoral Studies and Christian Theology and has served various churches as youth minister, adult Christian educator, and director of Men’s Ministries. Presently he is parish associate at Church of All Nations Presbyterian Church. He is a cultural facilitator in the Twin Cities and works to raise the public’s awareness of American Indian causes and injustices. He is founder/convener of “Healing Minnesota Stories,” an initiative dedicated to creating events of dialogue, education, and healing, particularly within faith communities. He is currently the Director of Racial Justice for the Minnesota Council of Churches.

As part of The Great Northern Festival this coming winter, a faculty from the Art & Design Department is creating an installation piece to raise sustainability awareness.
WE NEED YOUR HELP! We’re collecting clean plastic bags (no need to wash them, but no food residue) for this installation. If you have any plastic bags you’d like to donate, please drop them off in collection boxes: Christensen (outside of the Gallery) by November 15th or on the main floor of Old Main.

First Years and Sophomores: Address a Community Need with a 2026 Phillips Scholars Summer Project

Phillips Scholars create and test innovative ideas that address community needs — running their own programming in the summer of 2026. There’s support along the way, with the students coming together starting this May and throughout the 2025-26 academic year. Scholars receive more than $9,000 in scholarships and stipends.

Ten students from any of the Minnesota private colleges listed here will be named Phillips Scholars. Financial need is one of the criteria.

Augsburg’s Center for Wellness & Counseling offers free counseling on campus, as well as free telehealth counseling through BetterMynd. In addition, for students or other community members who are interested in using their insurance to find an ongoing therapist in the community, CWC has a referral database called MiResource. Any Augsburg community member can use this database to find possible therapist matches. The database is searchable by location, insurance, issue you want support for, therapist identities, and more. Applications Are Now Open for the PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2025 (graduating by May ‘27)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Monday, November 18th, 2024 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Monday, November 25th, 2024 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

This conflict becomes clear when the audience is led through the life of romantic poet Karoline von Günderrode by two characters with two very different claims to Karoline’s story: Bettine von Arnim, contemporary and close friend of Karoline, who wants to paint a strong, feminist picture; and the Playwright whose goal is to create an enticing, heart wrenching play. The audience finds themselves in the in-betweens of history, whilst being part of Karoline’s personal journey filled with struggles, doubt, and dreams.

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2025 (graduating by May ‘27)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Monday, November 18th, 2024 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Monday, November 25th, 2024 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

An Enemy of the People examines how a community responds when the local doctor threatens to expose that the town’s water source they rely on for tourism is contaminated. It raises questions of how far a community will go to protect their town’s secret so they can keep tourism dollars coming and circumvent a path to financial ruin. Scenes and songs will happen in close proximity to the audience, compelling them to feel as if they are part of the story. Immersed in the play’s dilemma, audiences will find themselves part of the climactic ending of the play when they actually vote to shape the ending of the story.

On November 13, Rev. Jim Bear Jacobs will share his story in chapel at 10:40 am in our next installment of our “Living Stories” series co-sponsored by the Religion Department, Interfaith at Augsburg, and Campus Ministry. Born in St. Paul, he is a member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Nation, an American Indian tribe located in central Wisconsin. He has degrees in Pastoral Studies and Christian Theology and has served various churches as youth minister, adult Christian educator, and director of Men’s Ministries. Presently he is parish associate at Church of All Nations Presbyterian Church. He is a cultural facilitator in the Twin Cities and works to raise the public’s awareness of American Indian causes and injustices. He is founder/convener of “Healing Minnesota Stories,” an initiative dedicated to creating events of dialogue, education, and healing, particularly within faith communities. He is currently the Director of Racial Justice for the Minnesota Council of Churches.

Cyndi Berg Will Speak in Next Uncovering Vocation Chapel on November 12

Please join us in Hoversten Chapel on Tuesday, November 12 at 11:30 for our next Uncovering Vocation chapel to hear Cyndi Berg, Special Assistant to the President, share her story. Cyndi joined the staff of Augsburg University in 2017. Her role in the Office of the President provides frequent opportunities to connect and collaborate with multiple aspects of the Augsburg community including staff, faculty, students, Board of Regents and community partners.

Cyndi came to Augsburg from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter where she served as the Assistant Director for Church Relations. Prior to her work in higher education, she served at the Saint Paul Area Synod of the ELCA as Office and Events Manager for nearly ten years. Cyndi has a B.S. in Business Management from Minnesota State University, Mankato and is a 2021 graduate of Augsburg’s Master of Arts in Leadership program – proud to be an Auggie.

2025 Benefits Enrollment Guide Available

Open Enrollment, the annual period when benefits-eligible employees make their benefit choices for the coming year, begins Monday, November 11 and continues through Sunday, November 24. This is the only time of year when you may elect or change your benefits, unless you experience a qualifying life event.

Starting in 2025, Augsburg is pleased to introduce an additional benefit for our medical plan participants: primary and urgent care services through Kavira, at no extra cost. Kavira offers virtual and in-home visits, providing convenient access to care at little to no cost for those enrolled in our medical plans. Feedback from other Minnesota Private College Council (MPCC) schools has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited to pilot this benefit with the Augsburg community.

Post-Election Gathering for Faculty and Staff

Do you need a place to bring your anxiety, expectations and other feelings around the 2024 election? Would you like to debrief our nation’s elections with members of our staff and faculty community?  The Provost’s Office, Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship and Campus Ministry are partnering to host two Post-Election Day Gatherings for staff and faculty on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

An in-person gathering is scheduled for 9am in Hoversten Chapel and a virtual gathering is scheduled for 4pm on ZOOM. Augsburg faculty and staff are invited to attend. The purpose of these gatherings is to make space for connection and care for our staff and faculty as we move through the elections, and to offer support and resources as we care for our students and wider community.

Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program Requirement Reminder

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. One of these initiatives was the requirement of Augsburg faculty and staff to complete the University’s Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program and stay in good-standing every year following completion.

Capitol Pathways Program – Paid Internships at the State Capitol – Applications Due November 15

Capitol Pathways is a paid spring internship program for BIPOC college students. With the long-term goal of making Minnesota state government and policymaking more representative of our diverse communities, our program provides students leadership, legislative and career readiness training alongside an immersive internship experience with an organization working in policy during the legislative session. This is a spring internship from January – May, 2025.

In One Week: Auditions for Student-Directed Play

This year’s student-directed play “Tian” starts auditions in just one week. Whether you are already experienced on stage, or want to dive into a new adventure – we are so excited to meet you. Play Description: Who owns history? And who is allowed to tell its stories? The student-written piece Tian centers around these fundamental questions. This conflict becomes clear when the audience is led through the life of romantic poet Karoline von Günderrode by two characters with two very different claims to Karoline’s story: Bettine von Arnim, contemporary and close friend of Karoline, who wants to paint a strong, feminist picture; and the Playwright whose goal is to create an enticing, heart wrenching play. The audience finds themselves in the in-betweens of history, whilst being part of Karoline’s personal journey filled with struggles, doubt, and dreams.

Applications Are Now Open for the PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2025 (graduating by May ‘27)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Monday, November 18th, 2024 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Monday, November 25th, 2024 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Open Enrollment Begins November 11

Open Enrollment, the annual period when benefits-eligible employees make their benefit choices for the coming year, begins Monday, November 11 and continues through Sunday, November 24. This is the only time of year when you may elect or change your benefits, unless you experience a qualifying life event.

All benefits-eligible employees are encouraged to attend open enrollment information sessions. The first session will be held virtually on Thursday, November 7 at 12:00 noon.
The 2025 Benefit Guide will be available by November 4 – watch A-mail for the announcement.

As part of The Great Northern Festival this coming winter, a faculty from the Art & Design Department is creating an installation piece to raise sustainability awareness.
WE NEED YOUR HELP! We’re collecting clean plastic bags (no need to wash them, but no food residue) for this installation. If you have any plastic bags you’d like to donate, please drop them off in collection boxes: Christensen (outside of the Gallery) by November 15th or on the main floor of Old Main.
