Skilled Augsburg students will work with you one-on-one at whatever stage of writing you are in – the idea-development stage, the drafting stage, and the revision stage – and can show you how to choose an appropriate essay topic, how to develop a thesis statement and paragraphs, how to revise your essay, or assist with any other writing needs you may have. Orange Shirt Day – September 30

Orange Shirt day recognized on Sept. 30th annually and is a national day of remembrance of those who survived Indian boarding schools and those who did not come home. This year the Augsburg Indigenous Student Association and American Indian Student Services are providing Orange Shirts with “Every child matters” on them for Augsburg students, staff, and faculty. Orange Shirts will be available (at no charge) on Sept. 26th & 27th in the Oyate Commons from 9am-2pm. T-shirts will be available while supplies last so it is first come first served. Any questions can be directed to aiss@augsburg.edu.

We will offer a blessing of the animals in Hoversten Chapel on October 4 at 10:40 am. You are invited to bring your pet or emotional support or service animal to chapel that day or send a photo of your pet by October 2 to Janice Dames at dames@augsburg.edu to be included in the slideshow. On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated. October 4 was originally chosen for the blessing of the animals because it is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment.

Monday 9/23, Noon: An Introduction to Breathe for Change

Breathe For Change is a movement of passionate educators and leaders healing ourselves to heal our world. We lead mind-body and social-emotional wellness trainings that unite, train, and support educators and community leaders in enhancing individual and collective well-being. We envision all people inspired, educated, and empowered to be their whole and brilliant selves in their lives, relationships, and communities. This 45 minute workshop will focus on wellness for educators and their students. We will engage in breathing exercises, mindful movement and chair yoga, so please dress comfortably.

Organist Arjan Breukhoven Performance 9/20

Organist Arjan Breukhoven from the Netherlands to perform at Augsburg

Friday, September 20, 2024
Masterclass on Organ Improvisation at 9:30 a.m.
Organ Recital at 7:00 p.m. Hoversten Chapel

Arjan Breukhoven will make four appearances in the Twin Cities, including two at Augsburg University, where he will present a masterclass in the morning and a recital in the evening.

Born in Rotterdam, he studied organ and church music at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He performs internationally as a concert organist, touring the US and Germany this year; next year, he will tour Germany and Australia.
Breukhoven received the Médaille d’Argent (silver medal) in 2014 from the French Academic Society of Arts-Sciences-Lettres for his accomplishments in French organ music. Breukhoven was also awarded the Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 2020 by the king of the Netherlands.

He also directs three large Dutch male choirs and the Australian Christian Men’s Choir in Perth, and is renowned for his many compositions for choir, organ, and other instruments.

Paul Vang in Chapel on Tuesday, September 24

Please join us on Tuesday, September 24 at 11:30 for our next Uncovering Vocation chapel. Paul Vang, Pan-Asian Student Services Program Manager, will share his story. Paul is a first-generation college graduate and is a son to Hmong refugee parents. He graduated from St. Cloud State with a Bachelors of Science in Social Work. Paul is passionate about instilling leadership in young people and impacting systems that bring positive change, this pushed him to obtain his Masters of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Crown College. His professional experience includes nonprofit, public and educational sectors where he served mainly youth and young adults in positions such as Community Social Worker, Program Director, Youth & Family Program Specialist, and District Homeless Liaison. What excites Paul about the Pan-Asian Student Services Program Manager position is the ability to mentor students who reflect his educational and professional journey.

Full-Time Faculty: Apply for an Advancing Religious Pluralism Fellowship – Due TODAY

The Interfaith Institute, Religion and Philosophy Department, and Center for Teaching and Learning received a grant from the Interfaith America and John Templeton Foundations to implement a year-long faculty cohort focused on a campus wide effort on teaching religious diversity and pluralism. We invite full-time Augsburg University faculty to apply for the fellowship program. Limited fellowships are available and fellows will receive a stipend of $500.00. Faculty from any department are encouraged to apply.

The goals of the yearlong fellowship are to develop new material for courses, new approaches to teaching, and to learn from other faculty members in the cohort. We will be leading workshops on religious pluralism, teaching religious diversity, and understanding how to engage worldview diversity in the classroom and beyond. If you’re not familiar with teaching religious and worldview diversity, this cohort is a wonderful opportunity to learn more and build your skills and familiarity with these topics. We will work with you to integrate content and skills in your context and academic discipline.

Sessions will include presentations on topics and the opportunity to workshop ideas with other cohort members. Some brief pre-reading will be required.

In religious contexts, vocation is usually defined as the work that the Divine calls us to do on behalf of others. But what if our vocation starts much closer to home, with the ways that we care for and nurture ourselves? This lecture explores how self-care transcends mere indulgence to become a spiritual discipline and vocation that helps us to cultivate resilience, compassion, a deeper connection with our faith, and ultimately, greater love for the world.
Chanequa Walker-Barnes, Ph.D., is a prominent scholar, theologian, and author, known for her thought-provoking work on racial justice and spirituality. With a deep commitment to social change, she combines her expertise in clinical psychology and theology to tackle issues of systemic oppression, cultural trauma, and their impact on individuals and society.

Public Meeting about I-94 Bike/Pedestrian Bridge Designs – September 24

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) is hosting a public meeting on Tuesday, September 24th from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at the Brian Coyle Center about the I-94/22nd Ave. S. bike and pedestrian bridge project. The purpose of the meeting is to gather feedback from residents and other users of the bridge about several alternative preliminary designs for a new bridge. Stop by and share your thoughts!

Thó Wiŋ Magazine Now Hiring

We are looking for officers for the 2024-2024 school year for Augsburg’s official literary magazine, Thó Wiŋ Magazine!

We are hiring two positions: Layout Editor and Assisting Editor. The Layout Editor will be responsible for assembling the layout of the magazine, placing submissions in a printable format, and designing advertising material for our social media and poster campaigns. The Assisting Editor will assist in administrative tasks and help with event planning. All editors will participate in regular meetings and assist with our decision process in determining which submissions should be accepted into the magazine.

We are requesting that those applying for the Layout Editor position provide examples of graphic design and/or formatting work they have done. For both positions a resume is requested, but not required.

This is a paid position. All officers receive a semesterly stipend between $100 and $400 depending on the position.

The Share Shop is officially open for the semester! We are so excited to see you on Mondays from 1:00-5:00 pm, and Tuesdays and Fridays from 12:00-4:00 pm.

We will be accepting donations during these hours, you’re free to shop around, and we are available to schedule your formal clothing and outdoor activity rentals! Come check it out in Science Hall 8B across from the grey table (follow the blue arrows on the floor). See you there!

Thó Wiŋ Magazine Now Hiring

We are looking for officers for the 2024-2024 school year for Augsburg’s official literary magazine, Thó Wiŋ Magazine!

We are hiring two positions: Layout Editor and Assisting Editor. The Layout Editor will be responsible for assembling the layout of the magazine, placing submissions in a printable format, and designing advertising material for our social media and poster campaigns. The Assisting Editor will assist in administrative tasks and help with event planning. All editors will participate in regular meetings and assist with our decision process in determining which submissions should be accepted into the magazine.

We are requesting that those applying for the Layout Editor position provide examples of graphic design and/or formatting work they have done. For both positions a resume is requested, but not required.

This is a paid position. All officers receive a semesterly stipend between $100 and $400 depending on the position.

Paul Vang Will Share His Story in Chapel on September 24

Please join us on Tuesday, September 24 at 11:30 for our next Uncovering Vocation chapel. Paul Vang, Pan-Asian Student Services Program Manager, will share his story. Paul is a first-generation college graduate and is a son to Hmong refugee parents. He graduated from St. Cloud State with a Bachelors of Science in Social Work. Paul is passionate about instilling leadership in young people and impacting systems that bring positive change, this pushed him to obtain his Masters of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Crown College. His professional experience includes nonprofit, public and educational sectors where he served mainly youth and young adults in positions such as Community Social Worker, Program Director, Youth & Family Program Specialist, and District Homeless Liaison. What excites Paul about the Pan-Asian Student Services Program Manager position is the ability to mentor students who reflect his educational and professional journey.

Public Meeting about I-94 Bike/Pedestrian Bridge Designs – September 24

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) is hosting a public meeting on Tuesday, September 24th from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at the Brian Coyle Center about the I-94/22nd Ave. S. bike and pedestrian bridge project. The purpose of the meeting is to gather feedback from residents and other users of the bridge about several alternative preliminary designs for a new bridge. Stop by and share your thoughts!

Full-Time Faculty: Apply for an Advancing Religious Pluralism Fellowship – Due Friday

The Interfaith Institute, Religion and Philosophy Department, and Center for Teaching and Learning received a grant from the Interfaith America and John Templeton Foundations to implement a year-long faculty cohort focused on a campus wide effort on teaching religious diversity and pluralism. We invite full-time Augsburg University faculty to apply for the fellowship program. Limited fellowships are available and fellows will receive a stipend of $500.00. Faculty from any department are encouraged to apply.

The goals of the yearlong fellowship are to develop new material for courses, new approaches to teaching, and to learn from other faculty members in the cohort. We will be leading workshops on religious pluralism, teaching religious diversity, and understanding how to engage worldview diversity in the classroom and beyond. If you’re not familiar with teaching religious and worldview diversity, this cohort is a wonderful opportunity to learn more and build your skills and familiarity with these topics. We will work with you to integrate content and skills in your context and academic discipline.

Sessions will include presentations on topics and the opportunity to workshop ideas with other cohort members. Some brief pre-reading will be required.

September 17 Is Constitution Day

Constitution Day is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is celebrated on September 17, the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787 in Philadelphia.

One of the key responsibilities of citizenship is voting. This year, Election Day is Tuesday, November 5 and Augsburg has made Election Day a holiday during which classes are canceled so that all eligible voters have time to vote. The office of the Minnesota Secretary of State has sample ballots and information about voting. Please visit the Sabo Center website for helpful voter information resources.

Please note that if your event requires any special set up, catering, AV requests, etc. we require at least 15 business days (but more time is strongly recommended to ensure your event is a success). Orange Shirt Day – September 30

Orange Shirt day recognized on Sept. 30th annually and is a national day of remembrance of those who survived Indian boarding schools and those who did not come home. This year the Augsburg Indigenous Student Association and American Indian Student Services are providing Orange Shirts with “Every child matters” on them for Augsburg students, staff, and faculty. Orange Shirts will be available (at no charge) on Sept. 26th & 27th in the Oyate Commons from 9am-2pm. T-shirts will be available while supplies last so it is first come first served. Daily Chapel: Believe in What’s Possible

As part of National Voter Registration Day, Chelsea Sheldon of Believe in What’s Possible, will talk about the organization’s work to increase youth civic awareness and engagement in MN primary elections through celebratory events-based organizing – thereby transforming MN’s political math. They seek to inspire all youth, particularly BIPOC, rural, and unhoused youth, to participate in politics on their terms. The organization will also be tabling in Christensen Center from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Blessing of the Animals on October 4

Campus Ministry will offer a blessing of the animals in Hoversten Chapel on October 4 at 10:40 am. You are invited to bring your pet or emotional support or service animal to chapel that day or send a photo of your pet by October 2 to Janice Dames at dames@augsburg.edu to be included in the slideshow. On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated. October 4 was originally chosen for the blessing of the animals because it is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment.

Organist Arjan Breukhoven Performance 9/20

Organist Arjan Breukhoven from the Netherlands to perform at Augsburg

Friday, September 20, 2024
Masterclass on Organ Improvisation at 9:30 a.m.
Organ Recital at 7:00 p.m. Hoversten Chapel

Arjan Breukhoven will make four appearances in the Twin Cities, including two at Augsburg University, where he will present a masterclass in the morning and a recital in the evening.

Born in Rotterdam, he studied organ and church music at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He performs internationally as a concert organist, touring the US and Germany this year; next year, he will tour Germany and Australia.
Breukhoven received the Médaille d’Argent (silver medal) in 2014 from the French Academic Society of Arts-Sciences-Lettres for his accomplishments in French organ music. Breukhoven was also awarded the Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 2020 by the king of the Netherlands.

He also directs three large Dutch male choirs and the Australian Christian Men’s Choir in Perth, and is renowned for his many compositions for choir, organ, and other instruments.

Full-Time Faculty: Apply for an Advancing Religious Pluralism Fellowship – Due Friday

The Interfaith Institute, Religion and Philosophy Department, and Center for Teaching and Learning received a grant from the Interfaith America and John Templeton Foundations to implement a year-long faculty cohort focused on a campus wide effort on teaching religious diversity and pluralism. We invite full-time Augsburg University faculty to apply for the fellowship program. Limited fellowships are available and fellows will receive a stipend of $500.00. Faculty from any department are encouraged to apply.

The goals of the yearlong fellowship are to develop new material for courses, new approaches to teaching, and to learn from other faculty members in the cohort. We will be leading workshops on religious pluralism, teaching religious diversity, and understanding how to engage worldview diversity in the classroom and beyond. If you’re not familiar with teaching religious and worldview diversity, this cohort is a wonderful opportunity to learn more and build your skills and familiarity with these topics. We will work with you to integrate content and skills in your context and academic discipline.

Sessions will include presentations on topics and the opportunity to workshop ideas with other cohort members. Some brief pre-reading will be required.

In religious contexts, vocation is usually defined as the work that the Divine calls us to do on behalf of others. But what if our vocation starts much closer to home, with the ways that we care for and nurture ourselves? This lecture explores how self-care transcends mere indulgence to become a spiritual discipline and vocation that helps us to cultivate resilience, compassion, a deeper connection with our faith, and ultimately, greater love for the world.
Chanequa Walker-Barnes, Ph.D., is a prominent scholar, theologian, and author, known for her thought-provoking work on racial justice and spirituality. With a deep commitment to social change, she combines her expertise in clinical psychology and theology to tackle issues of systemic oppression, cultural trauma, and their impact on individuals and society.

The library is putting the finishing touches on “James” and “Jean,” our self-service model! We have updated our search (the catalog) to make it easier for students to understand interlibrary loan (ILL) services:

Study Abroad Scholarship – Writing Workshop

On Wednesday, September 18th, the Study Abroad and Away Office is hosting a writing workshop for the Benjamin Gilman Scholarship. The workshop will be in the Marshall Room from 6-7pm. The purpose of the workshop is to help students refine their essays before they submit their scholarship applications.

The Gilman Scholarship is a great scholarship for US Citizens who are Pell Grant recipients. Please go to http://www.gilmanscholarship.org to learn more. The application deadline is October 10th.

Installation of East Commons Movable Wall: Monday and Tuesday Morning

Apply for Mayo Innovation Scholars Program

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics students, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in February.

Interested in Research and Graduate School? Apply to the TRIO McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2024 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2025 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2025. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2025.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify?
