Please don’t park in parking lots H and J unless you have the proper permit. Lot H is reserved for Institutional Advancement guests. Lot J is reserved for both Admission tours and new candidates for open Augsburg jobs. Employee and student permits are not valid in Lots H and J. If you park in these lots without the proper permit from Institutional Advancement, Admissions, or Human Resources, you will be subject to being ticketed.

Virtual Parking Permit System: Ticketing Starts Monday

Augsburg has transitioned to a virtual parking permit system this semester. Your permit status will be verified electronically based on your license plate number upon entry and exit from Augsburg lots. DPS is still providing hang tags as a backup method during the initial weeks of the semester, but they will not be used after the fall term.

DON’T GET TICKETED!
MPS, our parking vendor, will begin enforcement through the new system on September 11, 2023. The fine for a parking violation is $35 for a previously registered vehicle and $52 for an unregistered vehicle.

NEED A PERMIT?
Login to the MPS SentryLink website via the Parking Services link on Inside Augsburg using your Augsburg email address to purchase a parking permit, add or edit vehicle information, or pay a parking violation.

IF YOU DON’T DRIVE EVERY DAY …
The new system makes it easier to purchase a $5 daily (visitor) permit. This supports a more sustainable mix of commuting methods for Auggies who bike or use public transit to get to campus and only need to park occasionally. Purchase a daily permit at https://augsburg.mpspark.com/users/login or by downloading the Sentry Mobile app. Email address and license plate number are required at the time of purchase. There is a 10-minute grace period after parking begins in which to purchase a permit.

GUEST PARKING
Guests on official university business park for free, but departments should contact parking@augsburg.edu at least one week in advance with the guest’s email address, visit details, and license plate number to obtain a permit.

MNUDL Earns First Federal Grant, $137,000 In Volunteer-Focused Funds

The MN Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, recently earned its first federal grant, a 3-year award of $137,000 yearly through the AmeriCorps Volunteer Generation Fund. This grant is designed to help organizations build capacity to diversify their volunteer pool. Our programming tailors the debate format to meet the needs of students from all walks of life. We also recognize the value of having diverse mentors that can connect with our students on multiple levels. That’s why we are so excited to be able to fund new initiatives over the next three years, including:

* A new full-time Volunteer Coordinator role, dedicated to establishing and maintaining relationships with student organizations, service clubs, faith organizations and more
* Multiple Family Captain stipends, designed for committed debate parents/guardians to help spread the word about debate and recruit judges in the community
* Outreach assistant roles for Augsburg University students to recruit local community members to serve as Spanish Debate League and East African Debate judges
* Lyft rides for interested volunteers who need tournament transportation
* Volunteer recruitment and recognition events

Organized as part of the public programme for the inaugural 2023-2024 Soomaal House Archive Fellowship.

‘Tacabbir’ is a Somali nautical term referring to crossers of the sea. It is composed of the Somali word ta’ab (effort/work) and Arabic abara (to cross over).

Following their first workshop held at the historic Africa Center, SITAAD invites the public in Minneapolis to a workshop themed on their project Transmigrating Cassettes Vol. 1 which remediates Augustus F. Sherman’s Somali photographs and the troupe’s under-examined deportations.

In 1914, Chief Registry Clerk Augustus F. Sherman photographed a large group of Somali passengers from French Somaliland at Ellis Island Immigration Station. At the station, the group were processed as a performing troupe that arrived for exhibition purposes with Barnum & Bailey Circus. On the same day, in a letter addressed to the U.S. Department of Labour Ellis Island Immigration Inspector John F. Mann declared that at the “expiration of their tour,” each troupe member would leave the United States. The workshop will address the potential of uncovering colonial archives using sonic methods, along with an introduction to audio-visual methods. Workshop attendees will be invited to contribute to the project through cassette recordings and writings.

The workshop will include a Somali music cassette listening booth, dialogues, small plates, and refreshments.

*** Final presentation of this research will take place on September 15 at Soomaal House Gallery. More details to follow after the workshop.

After 12 years of working on this program, we believe we can bring the best version of Open Streets Minneapolis to the City of Minneapolis and other cities in Minnesota, and we will be applying to become the organizer in 2024.

It is not an overstatement to attribute the success of Open Streets Minneapolis directly to us, Our Streets MPLS, as the organizer. We founded this event and have fostered years of community engagement and relationships to make it the success that it is. We are steadfast in the belief that we remain the event series organizers to continue the level of engagement and success of Open Streets Minneapolis.

Connecting marginalized communities to opportunities to engage in dialogue about walking, biking, and rolling has always been at the forefront of our mission and the core of the events we host. The proposal for Open Streets Minneapolis 2024 aims to fund payroll, equipment, communication, and professional fees to feature local talent, insurance, software, supplies, and printing costs so that we can elevate the richness and diversity of these communities, and highlight the incredible potential for each of these communities to thrive.

We take great care in choosing areas that have been most impacted by historically harmful transportation decisions. We prioritize communities that might not be able to afford to host an event like Open Streets Minneapolis, and we believe the City of Minneapolis should share this priority.

“We Are Riverside” Cultural Immersion Workshops at Brian Coyle Center: Somali, Oromo and Native American

Join Pillsbury United Communities at the Brian Coyle Center for their “We Are Riverside” series of cultural immersion workshops planned in partnership with neighborhood organizations and businesses. These events uplift the cultures of Cedar-Riverside to build bridges of understanding across our community.

Workshops are four hours on Saturday afternoons leading up to the Cedar-Riverside Multicultural Dinner on Thursday, September 21st–mark your calendars, this is a much-loved community gathering with great food from restaurants across the neighborhood, performances from different cultural groups, translators to help neighbors connect across language barriers and a bunch of other fun stuff!

Schield: Visiting Professor at New College of Florida

Milo Schield, Professor Emeritus in Business Administration, has been hired as a Visiting Professor by New College of Florida in Sarasota. He was hired to teach his Statistical Literacy course to students in non-quantitative majors. This course emphasizes critical thinking about everyday statistics: how they are constructed and manipulated. While emphasizing that association is not always direct causation, his course notes that sexual and racial disparities are not always systemic discrimination. Both inferences require critical thinking to evaluate the strength of the evidence. His Statistical Literacy textbook was published by Kendall-Hunt this week and is being used by 170 students in five sections of Math1300 at the University of New Mexico this fall. All of this is a result of the major grant received by Augsburg College from the W. M. Keck Foundation “to develop Statistical Literacy as an interdisciplinary curriculum in the liberal arts.” Milo is a Fellow in the American Statistical Association , is on the Advisory Board for the International Statistical Literacy Project and is a past-President of the National Numeracy Network.

CWC Wellness Retreat – Open to All Students

The CWC Wellness Retreat is a weekend retreat (September 22-24) at Camp Friendship, in Annandale, MN. The retreat is designed for students who are interested in developing a deeper understanding of themselves through exploration, reflection, learning, and engaging with others and the natural world. The program features individual and group outdoor activities, including time to disconnect from distraction and the outside world, hiking, ropes courses, rock climbing, zipline, swimming, and canoeing. Students will leave the retreat with stronger connections to themselves, others and feeling more centered in their individual purpose and well-being. All identities are welcome and celebrated, and opportunities to connect with people different than yourself is an essential part of this retreat. The Retreat is FREE to Augsburg students( transportation to and from Camp Friendship, meals, and shared lodging) and all students are invited to apply.

Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Friday, September 15 and lasts through sundown Sunday, September 17. Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Sunday, September 24 and lasts until Monday night, September 25. Lesser known holidays Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah are also part of this holiday season. Sukkot begins at sundown on Friday, September 29 and the non-work holiday lasts until sundown on Sunday, October 1. Sukkot continues (as a working holiday) until sundown on Friday, October 6. Shmini Atzeret begins that same night, Friday, October 6, and the following night begins Simchat Torah, which lasts until sundown on Sunday, October 8, both as non-work holidays. During these days, please be thoughtful of those who observe them by not scheduling meetings, conference calls, or deadlines. For teachers, please do not schedule tests, presentations, or other mandatory activities. And remember that many Jewish households host family and/or other guests for these holidays. For those who celebrate Christmas, imagine if everyone wanted something from you between the mornings of December 24th and December 26th while you had multiple things cooking, preparations to be in services, and family and friends coming over. Be thoughtful, kind, and inclusive. And greetings: “Happy New Year” is appropriate to say on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. “Have an easy/meaningful fast” is appropriate to say on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement when Jews traditionally fast for 25 hours. Apply for Mayo Innovation Scholars Program

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

New Semester, New (Virtual) Parking Permit System

Augsburg has transitioned to a virtual parking permit system this semester. Your permit status will be verified electronically based on your license plate number upon entry and exit from Augsburg lots. DPS is still providing hang tags as a backup method during the initial weeks of the semester, but they will not be used after the fall term.

DON’T GET TICKETED!
MPS, our parking vendor, will begin enforcement through the new system on September 11, 2023. The fine for a parking violation is $35 for a previously registered vehicle and $52 for an unregistered vehicle.

NEED A PERMIT?
Login to the MPS SentryLink website via the Parking Services link on Inside Augsburg using your Augsburg email address to purchase a parking permit, add or edit vehicle information, or pay a parking violation.

IF YOU DON’T DRIVE EVERY DAY …
The new system makes it easier to purchase a $5 daily (visitor) permit. This supports a more sustainable mix of commuting methods for Auggies who bike or use public transit to get to campus and only need to park occasionally. Purchase a daily permit at https://augsburg.mpspark.com/users/login or by downloading the Sentry Mobile app. Email address and license plate number are required at the time of purchase. There is a 10-minute grace period after parking begins in which to purchase a permit.

GUEST PARKING
Guests on official university business park for free, but departments should contact parking@augsburg.edu at least one week in advance with the guest’s email address, visit details, and license plate number to obtain a permit.

Organized as part of the public programme for the inaugural 2023-2024 Soomaal House Archive Fellowship.

‘Tacabbir’ is a Somali nautical term referring to crossers of the sea. It is composed of the Somali word ta’ab (effort/work) and Arabic abara (to cross over).

Following their first workshop held at the historic Africa Center, SITAAD invites the public in Minneapolis to a workshop themed on their project Transmigrating Cassettes Vol. 1 which remediates Augustus F. Sherman’s Somali photographs and the troupe’s under-examined deportations.

In 1914, Chief Registry Clerk Augustus F. Sherman photographed a large group of Somali passengers from French Somaliland at Ellis Island Immigration Station. At the station, the group were processed as a performing troupe that arrived for exhibition purposes with Barnum & Bailey Circus. On the same day, in a letter addressed to the U.S. Department of Labour Ellis Island Immigration Inspector John F. Mann declared that at the “expiration of their tour,” each troupe member would leave the United States. The workshop will address the potential of uncovering colonial archives using sonic methods, along with an introduction to audio-visual methods. Workshop attendees will be invited to contribute to the project through cassette recordings and writings.

The workshop will include a Somali music cassette listening booth, dialogues, small plates, and refreshments.

*** Final presentation of this research will take place on September 15 at Soomaal House Gallery. More details to follow after the workshop.

Petition to Keep Our Streets MPLS the Organizer of Open Streets MPLS

After 12 years of working on this program, we believe we can bring the best version of Open Streets Minneapolis to the City of Minneapolis and other cities in Minnesota, and we will be applying to become the organizer in 2024.

It is not an overstatement to attribute the success of Open Streets Minneapolis directly to us, Our Streets MPLS, as the organizer. We founded this event and have fostered years of community engagement and relationships to make it the success that it is. We are steadfast in the belief that we remain the event series organizers to continue the level of engagement and success of Open Streets Minneapolis.

Connecting marginalized communities to opportunities to engage in dialogue about walking, biking, and rolling has always been at the forefront of our mission and the core of the events we host. The proposal for Open Streets Minneapolis 2024 aims to fund payroll, equipment, communication, and professional fees to feature local talent, insurance, software, supplies, and printing costs so that we can elevate the richness and diversity of these communities, and highlight the incredible potential for each of these communities to thrive.

We take great care in choosing areas that have been most impacted by historically harmful transportation decisions. We prioritize communities that might not be able to afford to host an event like Open Streets Minneapolis, and we believe the City of Minneapolis should share this priority.

Join Pillsbury United Communities at the Brian Coyle Center for their “We Are Riverside” series of cultural immersion workshops planned in partnership with neighborhood organizations and businesses. These events uplift the cultures of Cedar-Riverside to build bridges of understanding across our community.

Workshops are four hours on Saturday afternoons leading up to the Cedar-Riverside Multicultural Dinner on Thursday, September 21st–mark your calendars, this is a much-loved community gathering with great food from restaurants across the neighborhood, performances from different cultural groups, translators to help neighbors connect across language barriers and a bunch of other fun stuff!

The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. Owámniyomni Site Visit Saturday, September 9, 1:30-3:30 pm

Join Dakota tribal members from each of the four Dakota tribes in Mnisota on Saturday, September 9 for a visit to Owámniyomni (St. Anthony Falls) and Wíta Wanáǧi (Spirit Island) in Minneapolis. These sacred places have been heavily altered, but the lock at the Falls is now closed to commercial boat traffic, and there is an opportunity to reconnect with the river and restore this place in meaningful ways.

The non-profit Friends of the Falls is engaging with Dakota tribal nations about what could happen here in the future. The visit will include a presentation by Shelley Buck, president of Friends of the Falls and vice-president of Prairie Island Indian Community, as well as a short walking tour of the area. This is a really wonderful community event! “We Are Riverside” Cultural Immersion Workshops at Brian Coyle Center: Somali, Oromo and Native American

Join Pillsbury United Communities at the Brian Coyle Center for their “We Are Riverside” series of cultural immersion workshops planned in partnership with neighborhood organizations and businesses. These events uplift the cultures of Cedar-Riverside to build bridges of understanding across our community.

Workshops are four hours on Saturday afternoons leading up to the Cedar-Riverside Multicultural Dinner on Thursday, September 21st–mark your calendars, this is a much-loved community gathering with great food from restaurants across the neighborhood, performances from different cultural groups, translators to help neighbors connect across language barriers and a bunch of other fun stuff!

Owámniyomni Site Visit Saturday, September 9, 1:30-3:30 pm

Join Dakota tribal members from each of the four Dakota tribes in Mnisota on Saturday, September 9 for a visit to Owámniyomni (St. Anthony Falls) and Wíta Wanáǧi (Spirit Island) in Minneapolis. These sacred places have been heavily altered, but the lock at the Falls is now closed to commercial boat traffic, and there is an opportunity to reconnect with the river and restore this place in meaningful ways.

The non-profit Friends of the Falls is engaging with Dakota tribal nations about what could happen here in the future. The visit will include a presentation by Shelley Buck, president of Friends of the Falls and vice-president of Prairie Island Indian Community, as well as a short walking tour of the area. The Augsburg community is invited to join CGEE in welcoming Pinias Kashedi, Global Faculty from Namibia, on campus! He will be hosting a talk about the marginalization of youth in Southern Africa, titled, “Education Capture and Youth Marginalization in Namibia.” A brief description is below:

In 2023, economic opportunities for young people in Namibia are drying up. The country is facing nearly 90,000 unemployed graduates, many with advanced educational qualifications, in a nation with a total population of approximately 2.5 million. With one of the highest unemployment rates in Africa, there is a prevailing belief among Namibian youth that political activism does not yield results.

Colonial and social injustices are a factor to these contemporary issues, but also an inherited education system which perpetuates economic and social marginalization of young people. What measures, if any, is the Namibian government undertaking to address these pressing concerns? Mr. Kashedi will expound upon these matters from his point of view as a Namibian citizen who has worked with youth for many years, during this captivating “GlobalEd” talk right here at Augsburg University.

Fall Semester Parking Reminders and Resources

Augsburg has transitioned to a virtual parking permit system this semester. Your permit status will be verified electronically based on your license plate number upon entry and exit from Augsburg lots. DPS is still providing hang tags as a backup method during the initial weeks of the semester, but they will not be used after the fall term.

DON’T GET TICKETED!
MPS, our parking vendor, will begin enforcement through the new system on September 11, 2023. The fine for a parking violation is $35 for a previously registered vehicle and $52 for an unregistered vehicle.

NEED A PERMIT?
Login to the MPS SentryLink website via the Parking Services link on Inside Augsburg using your Augsburg email address to purchase a parking permit, add or edit vehicle information, or pay a parking violation.

IF YOU DON’T DRIVE EVERY DAY …
The new system makes it easier to purchase a $5 daily (visitor) permit. This supports a more sustainable mix of commuting methods for Auggies who bike or use public transit to get to campus and only need to park occasionally. Purchase a daily permit at https://augsburg.mpspark.com/users/login or by downloading the Sentry Mobile app. Email address and license plate number are required at the time of purchase. There is a 10-minute grace period after parking begins in which to purchase a permit.

Greenhouse First Thursday – 09/07

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

Hernandez is a Xicana community organizer, educator, and proud daughter of immigrant parents. Her educational background is in Chicane and Latine Studies.

Interested in Research and Graduate School? Apply to the TRIO McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2023 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2024 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2024. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2024.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? Are you looking for another course to add into your schedule? Is it time to move your beginning Spanish-speaking skills to a higher level? The Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies department invites you to consider taking Spa 211 for the Fall semester. Continuing your Spanish study is a powerful way to enhance your resume and make you a more viable job candidate in a market that is looking for global competence and multilingual skills. Spa 211 is the last prerequisite course for a Spanish minor, but even if you’re not able to pursue a minor, adding another Spanish course or 2 to your transcript and resume will give you an advantage in a competitive hiring market.

SPA 211 is Intermediate Spanish, a 2nd yr. language course designed for continuing skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and exploring cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, and is intended for students who’ve completed Spanish 112 or the equivalent.

ATTENTION ALL WHO LOVE SINGING IN HARMONY:

Choirs at Augsburg are open to students of any major and musical background. We perform classical concert music and folkloric music from all over the globe, collaborating with professional artists from around the world. If you love choral singing, come to our placement auditions!

When are they being held?

• Wednesday, August 30, between 10:00 and 3:00.
• Thursday, August 31, between 10:00 and 3:00.

(If you absolutely cannot come according to this schedule, please e-mail Dr. Kristina Boerger ASAP at boerger@augsburg.edu for an accommodation.)

How long do they take?

Between 20 and 25 minutes:

• 10-15 minutes to complete an intake sheet in the hallway.
• 10 minutes to visit and sing in the classroom with vocal faculty.

Do I need to prepare anything for my audition?

We would love to hear you sing one verse of a song in any style that you feel shows your vocal talents. But if you don’t have a song, don’t let that stop you!

How do I sign up for and complete my audition?

• Any time after 5:00 on Friday, August 25, stop by room M3 in Anderson Music Hall and sign up for your singing time on the sheets posted outside the classroom.

• On your appointment day, arrive 15 minutes ahead of your singing time. Grab an intake sheet, fill it out, and wait to be called in for your hearing.

• When you are invited in to sing, bring your completed intake sheet with you.

How do I get started with choir class?

• Look for an e-mail with your placement result, to be sent out by noon on 9/4.
• On receiving that e-mail, register for the class in which you have been placed.
• Report for your class according to its published schedule, beginning after Labor Day.

Students who have not enrolled in Orchestra (MUE 121) but who are interested in auditioning for placement in the Orchestra should contact Dr. Rafael Rodriguez by email at rodrigra@augsburg.edu. All Orchestra placement auditions are by video submission.

All string players with previous experience playing in orchestra (school orchestra, community orchestra, church orchestra, etc.) or with previous experience taking lessons on a string instrument are welcome to enroll in Orchestra. The audition videos are intended for placement and seating only – they’re not “make or break” auditions. We just want a chance to get to know you musically and to see what you’re doing as a player.

Orchestra meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 – 6:40 p.m. in the Music Hall, M3 rehearsal room.

Spots Still Open for Costumes and Make-Up for Performance Class

The class will be a mix of lectures, in-class activities, and projects with an overall focus on how to design costumes for the stage.

Students will keep a sketchbook of drawings throughout the semester in order to track growth, effort, and the ability to communicate ideas. Throughout the course, drawing skills will not be assessed, no tests or quizzes will be given, and no sewing is required.

We are in the process of hiring an entirely new board for the 2023-2024 academic year! We are looking for Lead, Managing, and Assistant Editors, as well as an Art Director/Layout Editor. Training will be provided by our outgoing lead editors! Thó Wiŋ Magazine (previously Murphy Square Quarterly) has been around since the 1970s and we are so excited to be passing the torch to a new group Augsburg community members. These are stipend positions and a great way to dip your toe into the wonderful world of publishing!

There are a few open positions for anyone and everyone of any skill level or experience. We do especially encourage BIPOC, AAPI, queer, trans, non-binary, women, and/or underclassmen to apply.

Norway House Presents: Naïve. Super

Naïve.Super – a new adaptation of Erlend Loe’s 1995 coming-of-age novel by Kurt Engh

WHY:
The play is adapted from the 1995 best-selling Norwegian cult novel about a 25-year-old questioning life and purpose. Engh’s adaptation uses experimental theater techniques in a refreshing, comedic text. We’ve made many presentations in communications, business, religion and other courses on topics such as conflict resolution, religious diversity, interfaith skills, managing religious, spiritual and worldview diversity. Students reported positive feedback on learning through experiential activities, engaged academic discussion and peer interactions. We can design class sessions for your particular context! The schedule for this position is Monday-Friday 5:00 am – 1:30 pm.

This position is responsible for cleaning and servicing designated areas according to the established procedures, area of responsibility and other assignments necessary to perform as assigned by the supervisor or lead. Follow proper cleaning methods, utilizing equipment for each situation, based on training, to ensure the campus maintains a healthy, safe, and sanitary environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

– General cleaning of area(s) of responsibility including waste removal, vacuuming, carpet cleaning, detail cleaning of restrooms, entries, common areas, wall washing, Kivac as needed, spot cleaning walls, staircases, dust mop, and mop or auto scrub floors.
– Detailing area(s) which will include dusting, edge vacuuming, cleaning light fixtures, cleaning and polishing drinking fountains, and straightening furniture and accessories.
– Buffing floors, Cleaning Carpets, and deep cleaning restrooms as needed.
– Clean all glass entry doors, inside and out. throughout the shift, as needed.
– Assist in the coverage of open areas due to vacations, sick calls, and open positions.

Additional Examples of Work Performed:

– Completing work orders.
– Clean and maintain all custodial equipment and closets according to set standards.
– Clean outside entryways, up to 15 feet from the door, and keep them free of debris and snow.
– Summer and school break apartment turn cleaning.
– Report damages, acts of vandalism, and needed repairs.
– Bio-hazard clean-up.
– Assist with event cleanup.
– All other duties are assigned by the Facilities Operation Manager, Custodial Supervisor, or Lead Custodian.

Owámniyomni Site Visit Saturday, September 9, 1:30-3:30 pm

Join Dakota tribal members from each of the four Dakota tribes in Mnisota on Saturday, September 9 for a visit to Owámniyomni (St. Anthony Falls) and Wíta Wanáǧi (Spirit Island) in Minneapolis. These sacred places have been heavily altered, but the lock at the Falls is now closed to commercial boat traffic, and there is an opportunity to reconnect with the river and restore this place in meaningful ways.

The non-profit Friends of the Falls is engaging with Dakota tribal nations about what could happen here in the future. The visit will include a presentation by Shelley Buck, president of Friends of the Falls and vice-president of Prairie Island Indian Community, as well as a short walking tour of the area. Food & drink provided.

“We Are Riverside” Cultural Immersion Workshops at Brian Coyle Center: Somali, Oromo and Native American

Join Pillsbury United Communities at the Brian Coyle Center for their “We Are Riverside” series of cultural immersion workshops planned in partnership with neighborhood organizations and businesses. These events uplift the cultures of Cedar-Riverside to build bridges of understanding across our community.

Workshops are four hours on Saturday afternoons leading up to the Cedar-Riverside Multicultural Dinner on Thursday, September 21st–mark your calendars, this is a much-loved community gathering with great food from restaurants across the neighborhood, performances from different cultural groups, translators to help neighbors connect across language barriers and a bunch of other fun stuff!

Time: Volunteer shifts are in 2-hour time blocks from 1 – 8 p.m.

This is a really wonderful community event! The Blooming Lotus Flower is an exhibition that captures the existing intimate bonds between Somali women to themselves and to their community at large. Khadija Charif’s project explores the profound impact women have on each other’s lives by utilizing photographs, poetry, installation, and audio to mirror real-world experiences witnessed by Charif. This exhibition is an ode to the women who are often beings sought as a space to find peace in and at times extract a piece from. A letter for the mothers who shape themselves into a home. A cry for the eldest daughters who are devoured unripe. A reminder to the sisters who extend their selflessness until there is no self left to sense.

Khadija invites viewers to engage with the work, encouraging them to contemplate the relationships in their own lives. Her ultimate goal is to explore the full spectrum of her artistic expression, offering a glimpse into the artistic monologue of a Muslim woman, centered around the layered concepts of identity, womanhood, sisterhood, and their interconnections.

THIS SUNDAY! Kaydka Reerka / Family Archives Workshop at the Soomal House of Art
Sunday, September 3, 2 – 5 PM

This workshop led by SITAAD (Leyla Degan and Naima Hassan) explores Somali family archives. It provides an opportunity to learn about archiving and will be introduced by Kaamil A. Haider, co-director and archivist at Soomaal House.

Materials from the Soomaal House Archive will prompt us to consider the conservation of Somali family photographs. In the workshop, alternative strategies of archiving connected to the centrality of Somali oral traditions will also be explored. Somali music cassettes will feature in the workshop; therefore, participants are invited to bring family cassettes.

Participants are recommended to bring 1–5 photographs to the scanning session to take advantage of this opportunity. The doors open at 2 PM and programming at 2:30.

The workshop will include light refreshments.
