The Scaffolding Writing for Student Success Workshop originally scheduled for today will be rescheduled for Tuesday, November 14 , 2023, 3:40 -5:00 pm.

Session Description: Do you include writing assignments in your course? Do you have questions and/or need support? During this session, we will share information about how best to build your instruction for students to succeed in creating written assignments for your course. We will discuss creating an assignment sheet, planning brainstorming and drafting activities, and organizing a peer review session. We will also have time to discuss general needs and concerns instructors may have when teaching writing in their courses.

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

The next First Thursday is this week, October 5, noon—3pm. The greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of the Hagfors Center.

Study Language Abroad for Free with Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)

Spend 8-10 weeks next summer learning one of fourteen languages at an intensive study abroad! The Critical Language Scholarship Program seeks participants from a variety of fields, backgrounds, and career paths essential to America’s engagement with the world. Most programs do not require experience studying the selected language and are designed to promote rapid language gains and intercultural fluency.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is
– A fully-funded 8-10 week language and cultural immersion program
– Students receive 8 credits of intensive language instruction
– Part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity
– There are 14 languages that applicants can select from. Alumni of the program also receive up to three years of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status when applying for federal government jobs

Competitive applicants will need
– To illustrate a commitment to language learning,
– A strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting
– Ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment.
– Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

CLS application deadline is November 14th, 2023 at 8 p.m. EST / 5 p.m. PST.

Due to multiple vacancies in University Events staff positions, we need to pause on booking events that require event planning assistance. The University Events office can still book campus meeting rooms, coordinate basic room set up, and book audio/visual support, but larger, more involved events cannot be fully supported by the department for the foreseeable future.

Free Arabic, Russian, or Chinese Language Instruction with CLS Spark

Critical Language Scholarship Spark participants will spend approximately 8 weeks during the summer learning either Arabic, Russian, or Chinese through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers. Must be a beginning level learner with no classroom experience. This is a virtual initiative for undergraduate students to learn essential languages for America’s engagement with the world.

– 10 hours of intense live group instruction a week
– Cultural activities and individual consultations
– Monthly professional development workshops and inclusive support

Participants of CLS Spark will receive:
– Language instruction and cultural programming
– Textbooks and language learning materials
– Language gains certified using the widely-recognized ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment
– Non-competitive eligibility for U.S. government employment for up to three -years after the program completion;
– Academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College; and
– A stipend towards equipment and connectivity costs (for example, a web camera or microphone)

URGO Offering Travel Grants for Student Researchers

URGO has a limited amount if travel funding to award this academic year. URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.
The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year to make travel decisions.

URGO Academic Year Research Funds

URGO has limited funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 20th. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible as the funds will be awarded on a rolling basis.

The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals every other Thursday. Their next meeting is Thursday, October 5th. Proposals need to be submitted by noon on Wednesday the 4th in order to be considered.

URGO Academic Year Research Application 2023-2024

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy and International Affairs

The purpose of the Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field. Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of seven participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, Harvard, University of Washington, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2024 and August 2025. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

Save the Date: Batalden Convocation in Applied Ethics (October 25)

Augsburg students, faculty, and staff are invited to the 2023 Batalden Convocation in Applied Ethics. Join us on October 25, 2023, from 10–11 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel or via Zoom for this free public event on interfaith responses to trauma.

Globally, over 50% of persons experience some sort of trauma during their lifetime. At this year’s Batalden Convocation event, three panelists will share resources from their specific religious traditions (Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam) that respond to trauma and foster resilience. The faculty panelists include Assistant Professor Iva Patel, Assistant Professor Shayna Sheinfeld, and Professor Najeeba Syeed, El-Hibri Endowed Chair.

The Batalden Faculty Scholar Program in Applied Ethics strengthens the infusion of ethics and values into our campus community, so that the skills of ethical reasoning and critical reflection are hallmarks of Augsburg’s students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

The Augsburg Writing Center offers both online and in-person tutoring. Skilled students will work with you one-on-one at whatever stage of writing you are in – the idea-development stage, the drafting stage, and the revision stage – and can show you how to choose an appropriate essay topic, how to develop a thesis statement and paragraphs, how to revise your essay, or assist with any other writing needs you may have. Faculty & Staff: Parking Permit Important Update

As you are aware, the federal COVID-19 public health emergency declaration has come to an end, and we are gradually returning to a sense of normalcy in our operations. With this transition, we would like to inform you of an important update concerning Augsburg parking permits.

Augsburg parking permits will no longer be pro-rated based on remote work plans. This means that parking permit fees will be applied at their regular rates, regardless of your remote work arrangements. This is in-line with practices prior to the pandemic.

October Is Cyber Security Awareness Month – It’s Training Time

October is cyber security awareness month. Every faculty and staff member has an important role to play in protecting the security of the data kept by the University.

In our digital lives data is at the heart of it. Augsburg has been trusted with data on our students, employees, alumni and donors. Your login information provides a key into Augsburg and that key needs to be protected. Also, as part of Augsburg’s Title IV financial aid requirements and insurance requirements employees must complete training twice a year for Augsburg to be compliant.

This year we have new videos on new topics with some of the same characters as last year. You will see notification emails coming this week from system@litmos.com which is the training platform. The content should take you less than 30 minutes to complete.

You are invited to bring your pet or emotional support or service animal to chapel for a blessing or send a photo to Janice Dames at dames@augsburg.edu by October 4 to have your pet featured in a chapel slideshow. World Animal Day is celebrated each year on October 4. On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated. The date was originally chosen because it is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment.

Take the Rethinking I-94 Survey

Rethinking I-94 is a long-term planning process led by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) to engage communities that live, work, commute, and play along the I-94 corridor between Minneapolis and St. Paul. Rethinking I-94 has reached an important milestone: design alternatives have been released to the public. Alternatives range from keeping things the same to creating an at-grade boulevard to expanding the number of freeway lanes. MnDOT is seeking feedback on these alternatives via an on-line survey (link below). Please take the survey and share your thoughts and insights.

Book Discussion October 5 – Disability Visibility

CLASS and Lindell Library invite you to a book discussion for “Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the 21st Century” edited by Alice Wong. “This anthology gives a glimpse into the rich complexity of the disabled experience, highlighting the passions, talents, and everyday lives of this community.”

We’ll discuss narratives from Part 2: “Becoming” on Thursday, October 5, 2023, 4:00-5:00 pm in Lindell Library, Room 301. We welcome you (students, faculty, and staff) to this discussion regardless of how much of the book you read! Snacks will be provided. Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy and International Affairs

The purpose of the Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field. Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of seven participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, Harvard, University of Washington, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2024 and August 2025. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

Research must be completed by May 20th. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible as the funds will be awarded on a rolling basis.

The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals every other Thursday. Their next meeting is Thursday, October 5th. Proposals need to be submitted by noon on Wednesday the 4th in order to be considered.

Application Due Tomorrow – Mayo Innovation Scholars Program

Due Tomorrow! Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Orange Shirt Day 2023

Orange Shirt day recognized on Sept. 30th annually and is a national day of remembrance of those who survived Indian boarding schools and those who did not come home. This year the Augsburg Indigenous Student Assocation and American Indian Student Services are providing Orange Shirts with “Every child matters” on them for Augsburg students, staff, and faculty. Orange Shirts will be available (at no charge) on Sept. 28th & 29th in the Oyate Commons from 9am-4:30pm. T-shirts will be available while supplies last so it is first come first served. Join Latinx Student Services this week in our first dialogue series on Tuesday, September 26th and Thursday, September 28th, from 2:30pm to 3:45 p.m. at the Augsburg Room.

By participating in our “platicas con cafecito”, we will strive to co-create a courageous and an intentional space to share our stories, deepen healthy, inclusive, and strong relationships at the speed of trust.

On Tuesday, we will be sharing personal experiences and stories about navigating higher education as undocumented, immigrant, and mix-status students, friends, family members, and/or allies. We have a diverse immigrant community, so regardless, of your legal status, ethnicity, or classes, you encouraged and welcomed to join us in our circle.

Please note that in our efforts to build trust during our time together, you are asked to attend for the entirety of the dialogue, as leaving early or arriving late may create a distraction from our time together.

This dialogue will be co-facilitated by Erika Hernandez, Latinx Student Services Program Manager, and Luis Solis-Reyes, CWC Counselor.

On Thursday, September 28th, we will be moving from listening and sharing our personal stories, to collectively creating solutions about the issues and barriers faced by undocumented and immigrant students in higher education. Allies and friends are encouraged to participate in this session.

Sad News About the Death of Regent Emeritus Darrell Egertson ’55

The Office of the President received the sad news of the death of Regent Emeritus Darrell J. Egertson ‘55. Egertson, 89, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2023, after courageously facing a recurrence of cancer. He was a lifelong Augsburg supporter and engaged alum of the university who served on the Board of Regents from 1980 to 1994.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 500 Blake Road South, Hopkins, Minnesota.

Please join us in keeping Darrel’s wife, Helga, and their family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers.

Newsweek Spotlights MNUDL Mayors Challenge Event

Newsweek covered the Minnesota Urban Debate League’s 11th annual Mayors Challenge event, which took place at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis last week. The coverage is part of Mightier, a partnership with the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues to illustrate the ways in which debate strengthens the skills young people need to promote civil discourse in a multicultural democracy. The Mayors Challenge is an annual event at which exceptional high school debaters show off their skills and engage with local and state political leaders before a crowd of supporters. This year’s featured attendees included Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, First Lady Gwen Walz, and Governor Tim Walz (via Zoom).

MNUDL is an Augsburg program that provides resources and programming to support competitive academic debate for more than 1,000 students at 40 partner schools in the Twin Cities.

Skilled students will work with you one-on-one at whatever stage of writing you are in – the idea-development stage, the drafting stage, and the revision stage – and can show you how to choose an appropriate essay topic, how to develop a thesis statement and paragraphs, how to revise your essay, or assist with any other writing needs you may have. Due Wednesday! Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy and International Affairs

The purpose of the Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field. Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of seven participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, Harvard, University of Washington, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2024 and August 2025. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

URGO Academic Year Research Funds

URGO has limited funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 20th. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible as the funds will be awarded on a rolling basis.

The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals every other Thursday. Their next meeting is Thursday, October 5th. Proposals need to be submitted by noon on Wednesday the 4th in order to be considered.

Seeing Things Whole Launches Community Practice Cohort

This fall, The Reell Office of Seeing Things Whole is launching our first Community Practice Cohort to support the professional development of three leaders by advancing their strategic thinking toward action.

Seeing Things Whole is a disciplined process that embraces the organization’s relationships to the larger world, cultivating whole leaders and thriving organizations to positively impact the common good. Working closely with staff and cohort members, participants will receive customized coaching, develop mutually supportive relationships, and learn to apply the Seeing Things Whole framework to real-life problems. Over the course of three months, cohort members will identify and dig into a particular workplace challenge, gaining insights and perspective to see the whole of their situation and formulate an effective path forward.

Participants will:
– Attend three Whole Leader Roundtable sessions throughout fall 2023
– Work with fellow cohort members and staff to articulate and make progress on a leadership challenge
– Present the challenge to a Whole Leader Roundtable and receive focused feedback and insight
– Share progress and provide accountability within the Community of Practice Cohort
– Participate in structured reflection throughout the experience
– Leadership challenges can encompass a wide range of issues, such as how to grow a program that requires many collaborators, how to share power within hierarchical organizational structures, or how to sustain motivation and resilience in a challenging leadership environment.

Save the Date: Batalden Convocation in Applied Ethics – October 25

Augsburg students, faculty, and staff are invited to the 2023 Batalden Convocation in Applied Ethics. Join us on October 25, 2023, from 10–11 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel or via Zoom for this free public event on interfaith responses to trauma.

Globally, over 50% of persons experience some sort of trauma during their lifetime. At this year’s Batalden Convocation event, three panelists will share resources from their specific religious traditions (Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam) that respond to trauma and foster resilience. The faculty panelists include Assistant Professor Iva Patel, Assistant Professor Shayna Sheinfeld, and Professor Najeeba Syeed, El-Hibri Endowed Chair.

The Batalden Faculty Scholar Program in Applied Ethics strengthens the infusion of ethics and values into our campus community, so that the skills of ethical reasoning and critical reflection are hallmarks of Augsburg’s students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

CLASS and Lindell Library invite you to a book discussion for “Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the 21st Century” edited by Alice Wong. “This anthology gives a glimpse into the rich complexity of the disabled experience, highlighting the passions, talents, and everyday lives of this community.”

We’ll discuss narratives from Part 2: “Becoming” on Thursday, October 5, 2023, 4:00-5:00 pm in Lindell Library, Room 301.
