Orange Shirt Day – September 30

Orange Shirt day is recognized on Sept. 30th annually and is a national day of remembrance of those who survived Indian boarding schools and those who did not come home. This year the Augsburg Indigenous Student Association is providing orange shirt pins for Augsburg students, staff, and faculty. Timely Warning: Hate Crime – Destruction/Damage/Vandalism of Property

In compliance with the “Timely Warning” provision of the federal Jeanne Clery Campus Security Act, the Augsburg University Department of Public Safety (DPS) is giving notice of a situation that represents a serious or continuing threat to students and employees of the University. The purpose of a timely warning is to provide information to aid the Augsburg community in protecting themselves after a report of a serious crime.

Reported Offense: Hate Crime – Destruction/Damage/Vandalism of Property
On September 27, 2025, at approximately 1:40 a.m., during an exterior patrol of the campus, a DPS officer discovered graffiti that had been spray-painted on the garage door of Luther Hall. This graffiti contained threatening and pejorative language towards the Somali and LGBTQIA+ communities. The graffiti was likely painted sometime between midnight and 1:40 a.m. and as of Saturday morning was already in the process of being removed.

Suspect Description
At this time, there is no description of a suspect involved in this incident. However, the graffiti matches that from the incident listed in the timely warning sent out on September 27, 2025, and the two incidents are suspected to be connected.

DPS and the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) are currently investigating this incident. Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is urged to contact Augsburg DPS at 612-330-1717 or MPD.

October Is Cyber Security Awareness Month – It’s Training Time

October is cyber security awareness month. Every faculty and staff member has an important role to play in protecting the security of the data kept by the University.

In our digital lives data is at the heart of it. Augsburg has been trusted with data on our students, employees, alumni and donors. Your login information provides a key into Augsburg and that key needs to be protected. Also, as part of Augsburg’s Title IV financial aid requirements and insurance requirements employees must complete training twice a year for Augsburg to be compliant.

You will see notification emails coming this week from system@litmos.com which is the training platform.

Shanice brings experience from Florida Gulf Coast University, where she oversaw student employment, guided supervisors, supported adjunct hiring, and onboarded more than 1,700 student employees in one year. Most recently, she worked with Zen Educate in Minneapolis, supporting educator hiring and compliance.

Crime Advisory: Motor Vehicle Thefts and Motor Vehicle Tampering

Dear Augsburg community,

Since Monday, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) has received two reports of motor vehicle thefts and one report of a motor vehicle tampering. As a result of these reports, the University is issuing a crime advisory to notify the community and to share important safety tips.

Reported Offense: Motor Vehicle Tampering Incident

On September 23rd at approximately 7:53 p.m., DPS was notified that a parked vehicle was broken into on Butler Place. The owner of the vehicle stated that items were stolen.

Reported Offense: Motor Vehicle Thefts

On September 24th at approximately 2:00 a.m., DPS was notified that a Motor Vehicle Theft occurred on 22nd Avenue. Campus cameras indicated that the vehicle theft occurred at approximately 11:00 p.m. The owner of the vehicle later recovered their vehicle in a neighborhood close to campus.

On September 24th at approximately 4:45 p.m., DPS was notified that a Motor Vehicle Theft occurred on 23rd Avenue at some point after 11:40 a.m. The owner of the vehicle reported that the vehicle was recovered in Stillwater, MN.

Suspect Description

There is no suspect description.

Status

DPS is currently investigating these incidents. Anyone who may have information regarding these incidents is urged to contact the Minneapolis Police Department or Augsburg DPS at 612-330-1717.

Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research over the academic year. URGO has limited funding for academic year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member.

Disabled Student Looking for a PCA

Hi, my name is Zander. I am a Senior, and I am disabled and in a wheelchair. I am looking for a backup PCA to help out when my regular PCA can’t. You do not need to be trained to be a PCA, as I will provide all of the training you will need, as it is not that technical of a job. My PCA comes to my dorm every day to help me with certain tasks that I cannot complete in a timely manner.. You would come when my main PCA needs a day off or can’t make it that day for different reasons, and help me with the tasks that they would usually help me with on that day. Some of the tasks you would do daily are refilling water bottles, refilling humidifiers, and making a bed. Expect this to take 15 or 30 minutes out of your day. Then, on top of that, I also require assistance with bathing once a week. Expect that to take an hour once a week. This job comes with very flexible hours. I will tell you what day I would need you, and you would pick a time on that day that you would come. There is no set required time that you have to come each day. The rate for this job will be $13 an hour; however, you are usually not there longer than an hour, so it usually turns out to $13 per day. The Harvest Moon Community Solutions Festival is a celebration of community victories, voices and solutions, including our steadfast determination to make collective stewardship of the Roof Depot site a reality.

For a decade, a broad coalition of East Phillips neighbors and supporters have fought tirelessly for the right to convert the vacant Roof Depot warehouse into a solar-powered, community-owned, indoor urban farm and community hub.

This September 27th, we invite you to come see community solutions in motion and learn about the upcoming renovation of the Roof Depot warehouse, as we continue building toward the long-fostered East Phillips Urban Farm vision.

All are welcome to this free event, put on by and for the community. There will be food, presentations, live art and performances, youth-led journalism, activities, education and resources for kids and adults.

Later in the fall we will hear from Koji Acquavia, a Soto Zen priest and teacher at the Clouds in Water Zen Center; and Muntadher Aljabery who serves the Shia Muslim community of Minneapolis, Minnesota as a resident Imam.

Dear Augsburg community,

Augsburg University Department of Public Safety (DPS) is issuing this crime advisory in order to increase campus awareness and encourage extra precautions to be taken in regard to safety and security.

Reported Offense(s): Scam Links and Subsequent Threatening Messages

On September 23, 2025, at approximately 3 p.m., DPS received a report that on or around September 19, 2025, an Augsburg student received a link through a GroupMe chat that purported to be about the sale of a MacBook. After clicking on the link, the student was asked to share banking account information and personal photos for various artisan-style products. The student later began receiving threats and violent imagery after attempting to block communications from the sender. The University has reason to believe that this scam link was also shared with other students.

Suspect Description:
There is not a description of the suspect who sent the link.

Higher Ed to End Slavery in Minnesota Conference on Friday, October 3

Next week Friday, October 3 will be the first ever Higher Ed to End Slavery in Minnesota Conference, featuring Professor Lehman, End Slavery Coalition Director Chauntyll Allen, and a myriad of other impacted leaders and workshops.

Please join End Slavery Minnesota, the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee (IWOC), and Students for Abolition for a day of discussion and skill-sharing on Friday October 3 from 9 AM to 7 PM.

This event will explore the intersections of prisons, universities, and prison labor with community organizers, students, instructors, and more. The first set of workshops will include: how to co-teach a class with someone in prison, how to close more prisons in MN, and lessons in solidarity across movements. The second set of workshops will include: how to organize on your campus, how to run legislative meetings, grievance training, and more.

An opening panel and lunch will begin at the Liberal Arts Engagement Hub at the University of Minnesota (310 Pillsbury Dr SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455) before traveling together to Minneapolis Community and Technical College for a catered lunch and afternoon sessions. Participants are welcome to join for the full day or any portion of the day.

Rev. Canon Robert Two Bulls, a member of the Oglala Nation and the Missioner for the Department of Indian Work for the Episcopal Church in Minnesota, is our first speaker this fall for our “Living Stories” series. He will tell his story of commitment at noon on September 26 in Hoversten Chapel. “Living Stories” is a series co-hosted by the Department of Religion and Philosophy, Augsburg Interfaith Institute, and Campus Ministry. Later in the fall we will hear from Koji Acquavia, a Soto Zen priest and teacher at the Clouds in Water Zen Center; and Muntadher Aljabery who serves the Shia Muslim community of Minneapolis, Minnesota as a resident Imam.

The Augsburg University Writing Center is open and be ready to support your writing this semester! Our current hours are Sunday–Thursday, 5–8 p.m. (in-person only), with plans to expand our hours in October. We are located across from Advising on the second floor of the library.

At the Writing Center, trained peer tutors work with writers at all levels and in all disciplines. Whether you are just beginning an assignment and need help generating ideas, in the middle of a draft and looking for feedback on structure or clarity, or polishing a final version before submitting, our tutors are here to help. They can also support you in developing stronger arguments, refining your style, citing sources, and building effective revision strategies.
You can bring in any kind of writing project—course essays, research papers, lab reports, resumes, personal statements, creative pieces, or even application materials. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research over the academic year. URGO has limited funding for academic year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member.

We will offer a blessing of the animals in Hoversten Chapel on October 2 at 11:50 am. You are invited to bring your pet or emotional support or service animal to chapel that day or send a photo of your pet by September 29 to Janice Dames at dames@augsburg.edu to be included in the slideshow. On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated. October 4 was originally chosen for the blessing of the animals because it is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment.

Dr. Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright (“Dr. B”) in the Biology Department is looking for two undergraduate students to work with her on an education research project focused on enhancing student personal interest in biology. The main tasks consist primarily of watching biology instructors teaching classes and using coding tools to classify behaviors and discourse related to teaching in each video, with an estimated workload of 80 hours total over the semester. The two students would collaborate closely with each other and Dr. B. Funding will be provided through academic year URGO funding (if available and awarded), so interested students must be eligible for this funding. Thó Wiŋ Magazine Hiring (Closes September 20)

We are looking for officers for the 2025-2026 school year for Augsburg’s official literary magazine, Thó Wiŋ! We are hiring two positions: Co-Lead Editor and Assisting Editor.

The Co-Lead Editor will be responsible for assisting the Lead Editor in administrative tasks, event planning, and other correspondences. Responsibilities will include replying to emails, communicating with potential event partners, and assisting in coordinating the printing and distribution of future magazine issues. The Co-Lead Editor also would ideally be able to inherit the position of Lead Editor in the 2026-2027 academic year. The Co-Lead Editor receives a semesterly stipend of $300.

The Assisting Editor will be present for planning meetings and assist in determining which submissions will be accepted into the magazine. Responsibilities will include attending regular meetings and occasionally researching topics relevant to event planning. The Assisting Editor will receive a semesterly stipend of $100.

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2025 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2026 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2026. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who exhibit strong academic potential and intend to pursue a graduate degree. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2026.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) and income-eligible. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? URGO Academic Year Research Applications open September 3 to October 10.

Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research over the academic year. URGO has limited funding for academic year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member.
Please note that applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and funds will be awarded as they are available. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible.

Call for Events/Opportunities – Augsburg Exploration Day

On October 8, the University will host Augsburg Exploration Day. As part of the day, first-year students will attend the First-Year Convocation from noon-1pm in Hoversten Chapel featuring Xavier Tavera Castro, Assistant Professor of Art at Carleton College. Following the convocation, first-year students will meet individually with their AugSem instructors in addition to engaging with other events during the afternoon.

The featured events following convocation, especially for first and second year students, are the “Meet Your School” events happening between 1-4pm. Students will be able to interact with faculty and grab some Auggie swag (while supplies last).

Departments and student organizations are encouraged to consider offering additional events or opportunities for student engagement that afternoon (in particular, opportunities targeting first or second year students). Biology Education Research Opportunity for Students in Spring 2026 – Apply by September 19

Dr. Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright (“Dr. B”) in the Biology Department is looking for two undergraduate students to work with her on an education research project focused on enhancing student personal interest in biology. The main tasks consist primarily of watching biology instructors teaching classes and using coding tools to classify behaviors and discourse related to teaching in each video, with an estimated workload of 80 hours total over the semester. The two students would collaborate closely with each other and Dr. B. Funding will be provided through academic year URGO funding (if available and awarded), so interested students must be eligible for this funding. Interested in Research and Graduate School? Apply to the TRIO McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2025 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2026 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2026. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who exhibit strong academic potential and intend to pursue a graduate degree. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2026.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) and income-eligible. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? If you’re eligible but not yet registered to vote, there are multiple ways to register in Minnesota. Election Day is November 4, 2025.

—You can register to vote online up to 21 days before Election Day (October 14, 2025).
—You can register on paper up to 21 days before Election Day (October 14, 2025).
—You can register or update your registration when you vote, whether that is at your polling place on Election Day or at an early voting location. You will need to provide proof of residence to register at the time of voting.

Welcome to Imam Sharif Mohamed

Campus Ministry welcomes Imam Sharif Mohamed as the University Muslim Chaplain.

Sharif Mohamed holds Ijaza (authority) in Theology, Qur’an and Sunnah, Jurisprudence, History, and Spiritual Devotions, earned under the guidance of renowned scholars. In addition to his religious leadership, he has over 20 years of experience in family and marriage counseling, applying Islamic principles to address mental health, family and youth well-being, and public health challenges within East African immigrant communities.
He is the cofounder and current Imam of the Islamic Civic Society of America/Dar Al-Hijrah Mosque, the first mosque established to serve Minnesota’s East African and Muslim community. For more than 40 years, Imam Sharif has served as an Islamic scholar, preacher, and civic leader globally —earning recognition for promoting human dignity and interfaith collaboration.
In 2015, he became Minnesota’s first Imam to serve as a hospital chaplain. He received the prestigious Hubert H. Humphrey Public Leadership Award from the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Since then, he has trained and mentored numerous Muslim faith leaders—both men and women—who now serve in chaplaincy roles within healthcare systems.
Imam Sharif’s work bridges religious leadership, policy advocacy, and health equity research. He is recognized worldwide as a trusted and respected voice in both Muslim and civic communities.
