Volunteers Needed!

Augsburg University’s Health Commons are health-focused drop-in centers and an important part of our community. We have seen substantial growth over the last year and we need more help! While we have several locations, the Central Health Commons (Central Lutheran Church, 333 South 12th Street, Minneapolis) is our busiest.

Last year the Diaper Bank of MN invited us to be Strategic Partners and we now receive 100,000 diapers annually, most of which are distributed at the Central location. Last year approximately 5,000 people visited the Central Health Commons, and this year we expect to increase that number considerably.

We are looking for volunteers to help us distribute diapers and hygiene kits, Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. (volunteers should arrive at 9:30 a.m. for a little orientation and to help set-up).

There are three types of volunteer options on the sign-up sheet: 1. Augsburg Student (any major) or Volunteer, 2. RN/PA students who provide health care services, 3. Spanish speaking volunteers (about 70% of the people who visit us are Hispanic and we would love at least one Spanish Speaking volunteer on site each day we are open).

Baby Shark Contest – Compete for Prize Money

Announcing the 1st annual 2025 Auggie Baby Shark Entrepreneur Contest! Students can compete for $10,000 in prize money for their business or social enterprise idea.

The Augsburg Baby Shark Contest encourages students to explore their entrepreneurial potential, seek out new opportunities, and use the skills & knowledge they have acquired to launch a new business. This annual event is organized by the School of Business and is open to all current Augsburg University undergraduate & graduate students. In order to be eligible, students must be registered in the semester of competition with a valid Augsburg University student ID.

COMPETITION DETAILS
● Individuals & teams consisting of one to 4 students
● All academic schools/disciplines are eligible
● Business Ventures for students focused on more traditional commercial opportunities. These can be business-to-consumer, business-to-business, technology-based ventures, & are typically for-profit models.
● Social Ventures for students whose ventures are primarily focused on solving significant social problems — such as poverty alleviation, social injustice, and environmental sustainability – using entrepreneurial methods in order to craft innovative solutions that are effective and scalable. These can be non-profit, for-profit, or a mixture of both (hybrid models).

Hello, my name is Ashley Wurster and I am currently a clinical psychology doctoral student at Augsburg University. I am conducting a research study about how episode patterns in schizophrenia may affect stigmatization levels among mental health practitioners and the general public in Minnesota, and I would like to include you in my research. The study will be completed exclusively online and consist of a survey about your demographics and your experiences with and attitudes on schizophrenia/severe mental illnesses. Apply for 2025-26 Interfaith Scholars – Due Friday

The Interfaith Scholars program is a yearlong course and service learning opportunity taught by the Interfaith Institute’s Executive Director and Professor of Religion, Najeeba Syeed.

Interfaith Scholars will explore the religious diversity of the Augsburg student body, the wider Twin Cities community, and the United States by learning from guest speakers from religious communities, business professionals, and other leaders across various sectors. Students may also be engaged in community service learning, and participating in and attending events on behalf of the program. Participants will gain leadership skills by learning and practicing how to converse respectfully with others about what they believe, why it matters, and how it propels us to service in the world.

Students with any religious or spiritual worldview as well as students without a connection to a religious tradition are encouraged to apply.

Applications for the 2025-26 student cohort are now open.
Applications are due on Friday, March 14.

Embodying Anti-Racism: A Space to Practice

Join us on Thursday, March 13 to continue our explorations of embodying anti-racism. We’ll be meeting from 12-1 (feel free to bring your lunch!) in Lindell Library 301. In this session we will be getting into some practices to help us build connections and develop community commitments together, as well as reflecting on a poem and discussing potential actions that might come out of our practice. In her 7 years of service to the university, Marah has been instrumental in the success of multiple initiatives in her role as Associate Provost and Title IX officer, including the implementation of a degree audit, co-leading our HLC reaffirmation, the development of a new gen ed curriculum, and the launch of our PSEO program. The Augsburg community has benefited greatly from her leadership and commitment. Marah will begin her new role as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Bemidji State University on April 7. Come join us as we celebrate Marah and wish her well on this exciting next step of her journey.

Call for Art: Afro-Centric/Eclectic: Exploring Black Diasporic Identities 2025 Exhibition

This exhibition seeks to merge Afrocentrism—a worldview that recenters people of African descent in historical, cultural, and artistic narratives—with eclecticism, an approach that embraces diverse influences, styles, and mediums. Inspired by Molefi Asante’s philosophy of reclaiming African diasporic identity, this exhibition creates a space for BIPOC artists to explore, celebrate, and challenge perceptions of Blackness across time, space, and artistic expression.
We invite artists working in all mediums to submit works that reflect the depth and multiplicity of Black diasporic identities—seen and unseen, shared and personal, historical and futuristic. This exhibition encourages a dialogue on how Blackness is experienced, imagined, and expressed across different cultural landscapes.

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Friday of every month this semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

Augsburg Staff Union Nominations Needed

We are still seeking nominations for Stewards, UCC (University Council) and Communications Team.

Please nominate yourself or a coworker who you think would be great for the role(s). The nominated person will have 2 weeks to decide if they would like to be on ballot. (You do not have to accept the nomination.)

Stewards: We have 6 spots total.

How much of a time commitment? It depends on what we have going on. We meet once a month (more if needed and agreed on by the group) for an hour or less. (over zoom and the day depends on what the group decided is best for everyone).

You also meet with new hires to walk them through the contract, get them signed up for Union Membership and answer any questions they may have. We have new hires every 2 weeks and the group decides which week they do. It is not 1 or 2 people who do it all.

UCC: Meets once a month for 1 ½ hours. Send out minutes to the members from their notes.

Communications Team: Meets every Friday from 12:15 to 12:45. We get information as needed out to the members.

Auggie Admissions Ambassadors works to highlight Augsburg’s many strengths and to encourage prospective students to consider Augsburg University as their university of choice.

They work closely with prospective students and families on a daily basis and assist them as they navigate through their college search. This is done through providing quality customer service and hospitality.

Ambassadors are often the first and last face our visitors see, whether it is an in person or virtual visit, requiring them to have a positive and energetic attitude about their work. Ambassadors draw on their knowledge and experience to help visitors get to know Augsburg University.

Auggie Ambassadors are passionate about the university and use that passion to enthusiastically to represent the university and contribute to the success of the admissions team. Training will be provided.

Tasks and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

– Working at the Admissions reception desk, answering phones and welcoming guests, and other administrative tasks
– Conducting campus tours with prospective students and their families
– Connecting not only in person, but may also include correspondence and mailings, phone calls, and virtual visits
– Assisting admissions staff with projects and tasks
– Work includes using a desktop computer, sitting, standing, and walking for periods of time
– Using Admissions’ social media accounts to interact with prospective students and families

Over the course of 25 years, Dr. Malone has been an integral part of a unique program of research at the Minnesota Center for Twin and Family Research aimed at better understanding substance use and abuse, its correlates, causes and consequences.

Dr. Malone, working with colleagues and students, has used EEG-related measures to uncover stable and predictive biomarkers of risk. In this talk, he will share some insights and discoveries from this work, offering a view of how brain activity can help us understand and predict substance use behaviors and substance-related problems. The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Friday of every month this semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

The next First Friday of the semester is this week, March 7, 12pm—3pm. The greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of the Hagfors Center.

In this remarkable volume, young adults voice their concerns and laments about the church’s
past and present, as well as their hopes and dreams for the church’s future. Unlike many current books on youth ministry, this is not a book about how to attract young adults back to church. Instead, it is an invitation to listen to young adults as they offer important insights regarding the capacity of the church—and the world—to flourish going forward.

Join Augsburg University Campus Ministry in Hoversten Chapel at 10:00 am for the 8th Annual Fosdick Lecture on Preaching. Rev. Dr. DeWayne Davis will address the topic “Shall Untruth Win? Faithful Preaching in an Age of Mistrust and Misinformation.”

Observers have offered provocative words and phrases to describe our cultural and political moment. Post-truth. The fall of reason. Alternative facts. Can good news penetrate the noise of propaganda and conspiracy in our national discourse? Can a word of hope break through the cynicism and nihilism of cruel and radicalized politics? Now more than ever, from one-on-one meetings with parishioners to our proclamations from behind the sacred desk to our public utterances, courageous preachers must freshly voice the enduring wisdom of the Bible, the tradition, and religious experience to a people awash in propaganda and misinformation delivered through an inflammatory media landscape. Harry Emerson Fosdick summoned the courage to speak truthfully and faithfully during his time of rapid change and discoveries. Will we?

Rev. Davis joined Plymouth Congregational Church as Lead Minister in December 2020. The son of two ministers and the youngest of fifteen children in Mississippi, Dr. Davis earned his B.A. at Howard University and an MA at the University of Maryland. He was awarded an M.Div. with Honors at Wesley Seminary and a D.Min. at Luther Seminary. He is ordained in the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. Dr. Davis brings a gift for preaching, an appetite for partnerships, a commitment to liberal theology and social justice, as well as experience in public policy work.

We welcome the stories of people who were impacted by the Vietnam War or Secret War in Laos, individuals who resettled in the U.S. as refugees, and children and grandchildren of refugees and immigrants.

We are excited to introduce the selected Smaby Peace Scholars for the 2025-2026 academic school year. Through a vigorous application and interview process, Bella Wizik and Ruben Rodriguez-Basilio have shown that they are the strongest candidates to this program, and we are proud to know they will be representing Augsburg University while in Norway.

Alongside other Peace Scholars from our Lutheran sister sites (Concordia College, Luther College, Pacific Lutheran College and St. Olaf College), these two students will participate in the annual summer Peace Scholars program in Norway, designed to deepen students’ understanding of the central issues and theories regarding conflict, war and peace.

Announcing the 1st annual 2025 Auggie Baby Shark Entrepreneur Contest! Students can compete for $10,000 in prize money for their business or social enterprise idea.

The Augsburg Baby Shark Contest encourages students to explore their entrepreneurial potential, seek out new opportunities, and use the skills & knowledge they have acquired to launch a new business. This annual event is organized by the School of Business and is open to all current Augsburg University undergraduate & graduate students. In order to be eligible, students must be registered in the semester of competition with a valid Augsburg University student ID.

COMPETITION DETAILS
● Individuals & teams consisting of one to 4 students
● All academic schools/disciplines are eligible
● Business Ventures for students focused on more traditional commercial opportunities. These can be business-to-consumer, business-to-business, technology-based ventures, & are typically for-profit models.
● Social Ventures for students whose ventures are primarily focused on solving significant social problems — such as poverty alleviation, social injustice, and environmental sustainability – using entrepreneurial methods in order to craft innovative solutions that are effective and scalable. These can be non-profit, for-profit, or a mixture of both (hybrid models).

I am conducting a research study about how episode patterns in schizophrenia may affect stigmatization levels among mental health practitioners and the general public in Minnesota, and I would like to include you in my research. Announcing the 1st annual 2025 Auggie Baby Shark Entrepreneur Contest! Students can compete for $10,000 in prize money for their business or social enterprise idea.

The Augsburg Baby Shark Contest encourages students to explore their entrepreneurial potential, seek out new opportunities, and use the skills & knowledge they have acquired to launch a new business. This annual event is organized by the School of Business and is open to all current Augsburg University undergraduate & graduate students. In order to be eligible, students must be registered in the semester of competition with a valid Augsburg University student ID.

COMPETITION DETAILS
● Individuals & teams consisting of one to 4 students
● All academic schools/disciplines are eligible
● Business Ventures for students focused on more traditional commercial opportunities. These can be business-to-consumer, business-to-business, technology-based ventures, & are typically for-profit models.
● Social Ventures for students whose ventures are primarily focused on solving significant social problems — such as poverty alleviation, social injustice, and environmental sustainability – using entrepreneurial methods in order to craft innovative solutions that are effective and scalable. These can be non-profit, for-profit, or a mixture of both (hybrid models).

Greenhouse First Friday: March 7

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Friday of every month this semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

The next First Friday of the semester is this week, March 7, 12pm—3pm. The greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of the Hagfors Center.

Augsburg Campus Life is moderating a forum of community advocacy partners, who will be answering questions on LGBTQIA+ Support and Rights in Minnesota, and providing information about how the federal government may be impacting the work of sexuality and gender justice now and moving forward. Area organizations participating in the forum include OutFront Minnesota, Transforming Families, PRIDE Twin Cities, RECLAIM!, and Queer Space Collective.

This event is taking place Thursday, March 6th, 4-6 p.m. in the East Commons.

*March 10th: Free Coffee & Tea – Starting at 9am stop by the Research Services Desk at the front of the library for a hot beverage and chat with one of our librarians about what we can do to help with your research.

*March 13th: Create a Study Buddy – Drop in anytime between 10am-12pm for some arts and crafts. We’ll have a wet felting station for making your own felt friend to keep you company as you prep for exams and papers. Takes 5-30 minutes.

Minneapolis-based poet Joe Davis will be leading a discussion on the publishing industry and what putting your art into the world looks like. Tea and brownies will be provided and attendees with have the opportunity to submit their work to Thó Wiŋ Magazine, as well as view what past issues of Augsburg’s official literary magazine have looked like.

Sverdrup Guest Lecture: “Leveraging EEG-Based Brain Measures to Identify Substance Abuse Risk”

Over the course of 25 years, Dr. Malone has been an integral part of a unique program of research at the Minnesota Center for Twin and Family Research aimed at better understanding substance use and abuse, its correlates, causes and consequences.

Dr. Malone, working with colleagues and students, has used EEG-related measures to uncover stable and predictive biomarkers of risk. In this talk, he will share some insights and discoveries from this work, offering a view of how brain activity can help us understand and predict substance use behaviors and substance-related problems. Skilled Augsburg students will work with you one-on-one at whatever stage of writing you are in – the idea-development stage, the drafting stage, and the revision stage – and can show you how to choose an appropriate essay topic, how to develop a thesis statement and paragraphs, how to revise your essay, or assist with any other writing needs you may have. Hungry for Hope: Letters to the Church from Young Adults Is Available for Preorder

In this remarkable volume, young adults voice their concerns and laments about the church’s
past and present, as well as their hopes and dreams for the church’s future. Unlike many current books on youth ministry, this is not a book about how to attract young adults back to church. Instead, it is an invitation to listen to young adults as they offer important insights regarding the capacity of the church—and the world—to flourish going forward.

The book’s contributors candidly discuss the issues that matter most to their generation: climate catastrophe, mental health, abuses of power, meaningful relationships, inclusion and liberation, and more. Make a Friend Monday – March 10

We’re hosting Make a Friend Monday in March 10!

Faculty and Staff will meet in the lobby of Christensen at 12:30 PM, where we will walk as a group around campus for 45 minutes of exercise and conversation.

Then, at 1:15 PM we’ll spend 45 minutes in the cafeteria to get to know our new friends. If you’d prefer to just join us for the lunch and conversation, meet us in the Commons and save us a table. This is informal, so please don’t feel like you have to stay the whole time – people are free to come and go.

The weather forecast looks beautiful. Bring or wear your comfortable walking shoes and a water bottle if you want. We are hoping for lots of sunshine.

I am conducting a research study about how episode patterns in schizophrenia may affect stigmatization levels among mental health practitioners and the general public in Minnesota, and I would like to include you in my research. The study will be completed exclusively online and consist of a survey about your demographics and your experiences with and attitudes on schizophrenia/severe mental illnesses. Rev. Dr. DeWayne Davis Is Our Fosdick Lecture Speaker on March 6

Join Augsburg University Campus Ministry in Hoversten Chapel on Thursday, March 6th at 10:00 am for the 8th Annual Fosdick Lecture on Preaching. Rev. Dr. DeWayne Davis will address the topic “Shall Untruth Win? Faithful Preaching in an Age of Mistrust and Misinformation.”

Observers have offered provocative words and phrases to describe our cultural and political moment. Post-truth. The fall of reason. Alternative facts. Can good news penetrate the noise of propaganda and conspiracy in our national discourse? Can a word of hope break through the cynicism and nihilism of cruel and radicalized politics? Now more than ever, from one-on-one meetings with parishioners to our proclamations from behind the sacred desk to our public utterances, courageous preachers must freshly voice the enduring wisdom of the Bible, the tradition, and religious experience to a people awash in propaganda and misinformation delivered through an inflammatory media landscape. Harry Emerson Fosdick summoned the courage to speak truthfully and faithfully during his time of rapid change and discoveries. Will we?

Rev. Davis joined Plymouth Congregational Church as Lead Minister in December 2020. The son of two ministers and the youngest of fifteen children in Mississippi, Dr. Davis earned his B.A. at Howard University and an MA at the University of Maryland. He was awarded an M.Div. with Honors at Wesley Seminary and a D.Min. at Luther Seminary. He is ordained in the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. Dr. Davis brings a gift for preaching, an appetite for partnerships, a commitment to liberal theology and social justice, as well as experience in public policy work.
