Heritage Day with Mary Lowe Oct. 24

On Tuesday, October 24, as part of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation series, we are excited to have Mary Lowe, associate professor of Religion at Augsburg University, lecture on: Martin Luther on the Body, Our Bodies, and the Body of Creation.

Martin Luther wrote, “There are three elements in a human, the body, the soul, and the spirit.” Many of today’s complex issues involve our bodies and the body of creation: climate change, gender and sexuality, abuse, and deforestation, etc.

Professor Lowe will introduce Luther’s perspectives on bodies and creation and examine how—even today—his theology can help us better understand and address these embodied challenges.

This event is free and open to the public, and will take place in Hoversten Chapel from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm and will include a discussion and a reception.

Are you curious about possibilities of future graduate level theological study? Join us for Seminary and Divinity Day on Thursday, October 26.

A group of Auggies will travel to Gustavus Adolphus College on the 26th to gather with students from other colleges and representatives from ~22 Seminary and Divinity Schools around the country for this special day of vocational reflection conversations! The theme for the day is from Psalm 119:125, “I am your Servant, Give me Discernment.”

Whether you’re curious to test the waters of seminary or divinity school, or you know for certain it’s something you want to do, this day is for you! Seminary & Divinity School Day is a great opportunity to explore the variety of options.

This event is free, and lunch and transportation to Gustavus Adolphus College will be provided through the Christensen Center for Vocation. We will leave Augsburg at 8:00 am and return around 4:00 pm.

Judge Debate for Minnesota Urban Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is searching for debate judges for high school debate tournaments this fall. Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas | Spring-Break Abroad

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.

You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:
AIS 305 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (elective course)
AIS 490 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (Keystone course)
CCS 295 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for CCS major of one travel seminar and an elective, OR general elective for non-majors)

Andrea Dvorak Presents on Sustainability in Study Abroad

Andrea Dvorak, Assistant Director of Off-campus Study, will be presenting on Sustainability and Study Abroad at the IES Conference in Chicago next month.

More and more participants, schools, and providers are seeking to incorporate the importance of sustainability as a focus or at least an aspect of study for students on international programs in today’s world. Efforts to develop sustainable practices in the study abroad field will be discussed, as well as the development and implementation of sustainable practices at Augsburg’s CGEE Study Centers in Latin America and Namibia, and at the IES sustainability program in Freiburg.

Make A Short Film for the Augsburg Spooky Film Fest

Feeling haunted by the Halloween spirit? Call your friends and make a short horror film this fall! Augsburg University students are invited to submit their short films with spooky/scary content to be screened at the Augsburg Student Spooky Film Festival, hosted by Augsburg Art Club. The free screening will be held in Sateren Auditorium on Wed. October 25th, with popcorn and candy available. You will be able to vote on your favorite films at the end of the screening, and the filmmaker with the highest voted film will receive a prize. The time limit for films is 10 minutes, and films can be submitted by uploading a high-quality version of your work to Google Drive and then sharing it with olsonl@augsburg.edu. Food Service Extended Hours Update

As we analyzed the numbers of customers dining from 7-8 PM during the month of September, we have concluded that we will not be able to continue with the extended dinner hour. We will return to the normal 7 PM Commons closing time effective Monday, October 9.

The other hours changes made at the beginning of Fall semester have been very successful, so we will continue to open at 7 AM Monday-Friday, and extend hot food lunch until 2 PM Monday-Friday. Please let Daniel Meyer (dmeyer@aviands.com) know if you have any questions or suggestions in the future.

Faculty Workshop: Creating Accessible Documents TODAY

Creating accessible documents is not only a good idea to ensure all students, faculty, staff, and visitors to our campus have equal access, but as a result of recent changes in the legal world, it’s now the law for us to do so on our campus too. We all have the ability to make our documents accessible to everyone, once we know how to do it. In this session, we’ll go over how to create accessible Microsoft Word and Google Docs. We’ll provide easy steps to create these documents, provide resources for accessible document creation, and feature tools to help check if you are on the right track. In addition, we’ll talk about how to make your Moodle courses accessible as well. Bring a document or Moodle site, and your computer. At the end of the session we will have work time practice these skills. Sponsored by the CLASS office and the E-Learning Team.

Speaking of Scholarship with Bill Green – RSVP Now

Faculty and staff are invited to this next installment in the “Speaking of Scholarship” series featuring Professor Bill Green, recipient of the 2017 Distinguished Contributions Award in Scholarship. Professor Green has published articles, op-ed pieces, and book chapters on history, law, and education, and he has published two books on race and civil rights in Minnesota history – A Peculiar Imbalance in Early Minnesota: 1837-1869, and Degrees of Freedom: The Origin of Civil Rights in Minnesota, 1865-1914, which won the 2016 Hognander Minnesota History Award. He is presently working on a history of Minnesota during the period of the Civil war and Reconstruction.

CTL Diversity Dialogue Book Group: Make Your Home Among Strangers

This fall, CTL diversity fellows will lead discussion of the novel Make Your Home Among Strangers by Jennine Capó Crucet. In the novel, Lizet, the daughter of Cuban immigrants, begins her studies at an elite liberal arts college. But the privileged world at Rawlings College feels utterly foreign to Lizet. Pulled between life at college and the needs of her family, Lizet is faced with difficult decisions that change her life forever.

Spend Some Time Homecoming Week in the Writing Lab

If you haven’t already visited the Writing Lab, it’s probably time to do so! More than 250 Auggies have already used the WL this semester. Writing Lab tutors await all students, grad and undergrad, and their written work – essays, applications, personal statements, creative writing. The Lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library and is just left of the circulation desk. No appointments are taken.
Here are the hours:

Mondays – 11:10–1:40 p.m., and 6:30–9:30 p.m.
Tuesdays – 12:30–3 p.m.; 3:30–6 p.m., and 7:30–10 p.m.

Native American Film Series: INAATE/SE

Save the Date! November 8, 2017 INAATE/SE [it shines a certain way. to a certain place./ it flies.falls./] returns to Minneapolis for another FREE screening.

This experimental documentary by Zack and Adam Khalil explores the Ojibwe story of the Seven Fires Prophecy, which has been interpreted as predicting the arrival of the Europeans in North America and the subsequent destruction they caused. Bold, smart, and unflinching, the film examines the relationship between cultural tradition and modern indigenous identity.

Judge Debate for Minnesota Urban Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is searching for debate judges for high school debate tournaments this fall. Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

The core debate tournaments will happen at these dates and locations:

October 27th-28th: Rosebowl (Roseville)
November 10th-11th: UMBrooks (U of M, West Bank)

Mary Lowe – “Martin Luther on the Body, Our Bodies, and the Body of Creation” Oct. 24

On Tuesday, October 24, as part of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation series, we are excited to have Mary Lowe, associate professor of Religion at Augsburg University, lecture on: Martin Luther on the Body, Our Bodies, and the Body of Creation.

Martin Luther wrote, “There are three elements in a human, the body, the soul, and the spirit.” Many of today’s complex issues involve our bodies and the body of creation: climate change, gender and sexuality, abuse, and deforestation, etc.

Professor Lowe will introduce Luther’s perspectives on bodies and creation and examine how—even today—his theology can help us better understand and address these embodied challenges.

This event is free and open to the public, and will take place in Hoversten Chapel from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm and will include a discussion and a reception.

The theme for the day is from Psalm 119:125, “I am your Servant, Give me Discernment.”

Whether you’re curious to test the waters of seminary or divinity school, or you know for certain it’s something you want to do, this day is for you! Seminary & Divinity School Day is a great opportunity to explore the variety of options.

This event is free, and lunch and transportation to Gustavus Adolphus College will be provided through the Christensen Center for Vocation. We will leave Augsburg at 8:00 am and return around 4:00 pm.

Blake Miller ’17 and Casey Regnier ’17 Helping In Hurricane Relief Efforts

Augsburg Biology Alumni Casey Regnier ’17 and Blake Miller ’17 are both currently volunteering with FEMA Corps, one of the many AmeriCorps programs. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) works to support American citizens and first responders during natural disasters and other emergencies. Regnier, who recently applied to physician’s assistant programs, was recently asked to lead a FEMA Corps team in Puerto Rico. Miller, who is currently in Houston, Texas providing Hurricane Harvey relief, plans to attend dental school after his year with AmeriCorps.

Food Service Extended Hours Pilot Update

As we analyzed the numbers of customers dining from 7-8 PM during the month of September, we have concluded that we will not be able to continue with the extended dinner hour. We will return to the normal 7 PM Commons closing time effective Monday, October 9.

The other hours changes made at the beginning of Fall semester have been very successful, so we will continue to open at 7 AM Monday-Friday, and extend hot food lunch until 2 PM Monday-Friday. Please let Daniel Meyer (dmeyer@aviands.com) know if you have any questions or suggestions in the future.

I’m hoping to receive food suggestions from students to diversify the Campus Cupboard. Augsburg faculty, Campus Ministry, and other donors have asked for specific lists of foods Students of Colors and students from different cultural backgrounds would like to see in the Cupboard. Many of the foods we have at the Cupboard are lacking the diversity we see within our students, so if I could get some suggestions from students, that would be awesome!

Donations bins are located in the Urn/Mort lobby, at Einstein’s, in the Campus Ministry Office, and in Anderson Res Hall.

Interview prospective students for Honors

The Honors Program once again needs interviewers for honors scholarship candidates. Interviews will begin October 23 and run through February 3, Monday through Friday, whenever classes are in session. Go to the Honors Interview Scheduling form to sign up.

If you are selected to interview at a particular time/day, we will notify you several days before the scheduled interview. At that time, we will also send you a link to a brief training video (15 minutes), and ask that you review this before you conduct the interview.

Join CTL for a discussion about the Teaching Tolerance webinar “Let’s talk! Discussing Race, Racism, and Other Difficult Topics with Students”. The 1-hour webinar airs on October 4 at 7:00 p.m. CDT and can be accessed any time after that.

Augsburg faculty will gather on Thursday, October 12th from 4:00-5:00 in Lindell 202 to examine the content of the webinar and discuss how we might engage this work in our classrooms. This session will end with a Gift Card Raffle!

Diversity Dialogue Book Group for Faculty and Staff

This fall, CTL diversity fellows will lead discussion of the novel Make Your Home Among Strangers by Jennine Capó Crucet. In the novel, Lizet, the daughter of Cuban immigrants, begins her studies at an elite liberal arts college. But the privileged world at Rawlings College feels utterly foreign to Lizet. Pulled between life at college and the needs of her family, Lizet is faced with difficult decisions that change her life forever.

Creating Accessible Documents Workshop on Thursday

Creating accessible documents is not only a good idea to ensure all students, faculty, staff, and visitors to our campus have equal access, but as a result of recent changes in the legal world, it’s now the law for us to do so on our campus too. We all have the ability to make our documents accessible to everyone, once we know how to do it. In this session, we’ll go over how to create accessible Microsoft Word and Google Docs. We’ll provide easy steps to create these documents, provide resources for accessible document creation, and feature tools to help check if you are on the right track. In addition, we’ll talk about how to make your Moodle courses accessible as well. Bring a document or Moodle site, and your computer. At the end of the session we will have work time practice these skills. Sponsored by the CLASS office and the E-Learning Team.

Speaking of Scholarship with Bill Green – RSVP Now

Faculty and staff are invited to this next installment in the “Speaking of Scholarship” series featuring Professor Bill Green, recipient of the 2017 Distinguished Contributions Award in Scholarship. Professor Green has published articles, op-ed pieces, and book chapters on history, law, and education, and he has published two books on race and civil rights in Minnesota history – A Peculiar Imbalance in Early Minnesota: 1837-1869, and Degrees of Freedom: The Origin of Civil Rights in Minnesota, 1865-1914, which won the 2016 Hognander Minnesota History Award. He is presently working on a history of Minnesota during the period of the Civil war and Reconstruction.

Food Service Extended Hours Pilot Update

As we analyzed the numbers of customers dining from 7-8 PM during the month of September, we have concluded that we will not be able to continue with the extended dinner hour. We will return to the normal 7 PM Commons closing time effective Monday, October 9.

The other hours changes made at the beginning of Fall semester have been very successful, so we will continue to open at 7 AM Monday-Friday, and extend hot food lunch until 2 PM Monday-Friday. Please let Daniel Meyer (dmeyer@aviands.com) know if you have any questions or suggestions in the future.

Good Idea: Spend Some Time in the Writing Lab This Week

If you haven’t already visited the Writing Lab, it’s probably time to do so! Writing Lab tutors await all students, grad and undergrad, and their written work – essays, applications, personal statements, creative writing. The Lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library and is just left of the circulation desk. No appointments are taken.
Here are the hours:

Mondays – 11:10–1:40 p.m., and 6:30–9:30 p.m.
Tuesdays – 12:30–3 p.m.; 3:30–6 p.m., and 7:30–10 p.m.
Wednesdays –11:10–1:40 p.m.; 3:30–6 p.m., and 6:30–9 p.m.

Interview prospective students for Honors

The Honors Program once again needs interviewers for honors scholarship candidates. Interviews will begin October 23 and run through February 3, Monday through Friday, whenever classes are in session. Go to the Honors Interview Scheduling form to sign up.

If you are selected to interview at a particular time/day, we will notify you several days before the scheduled interview. At that time, we will also send you a link to a brief training video (15 minutes), and ask that you review this before you conduct the interview.

Even doing one interview helps tremendously. Thank you for doing your part to recruit great students to the Honors Program and the University.
