Community Engagement Workshop

submitted by mcconnek@augsburg.edu

Our college community engagement workshop is about teaching college students about how to be more involved in their neighborhood community and what does being on a neighborhood board means for the community. Our main goal for this workshop is to have an increase of leaders who are college students get to know or how to be involved in their community in Minneapolis. To diversify the Neighborhood boards, because we also noticed there’s barely any young generations involved in the board as well. The workshop will be on Next Tuesday, October 10th. It will be located in Christensen Center, in the Marshall Room from 6-8 PM. Everyone is welcome to come to attend. Students must sign up through the Google Form; there will be food provided from Afro Deli. Any more questions, feel free to contact Kalyn McConnell (kalyn.mcconnell1@minneapolismn.gov) or Guillermo Perez (guillermo.perez@minneapolismn.gov ) through email.

Heritage Day with Mary Lowe Oct. 24

submitted by glasere@augsburg.edu

On Tuesday, October 24, as part of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation series, we are excited to have Mary Lowe, associate professor of Religion at Augsburg University, lecture on: Martin Luther on the Body, Our Bodies, and the Body of Creation.
Martin Luther wrote, “There are three elements in a human, the body, the soul, and the spirit.” Many of today’s complex issues involve our bodies and the body of creation: climate change, gender and sexuality, abuse, and deforestation, etc.
Professor Lowe will introduce Luther’s perspectives on bodies and creation and examine how—even today—his theology can help us better understand and address these embodied challenges.
This event is free and open to the public, and will take place in Hoversten Chapel from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm and will include a discussion and a reception.

Beware of “Toner Phoners”

submitted by davenpoj@augsburg.edu

There are several unscrupulous businesses out there who attempt to sell you outrageously priced toner over the phone. We have already gotten a call from someone (mis)representing themselves as our vendor – Marco, and referencing our new fleet of Sharp copiers. They may start with asking you what is the model or ID# of the copier near your desk. They may say they have extra stock of the toner you need or the price is due to increase. They may offer to ship you a toner on trial. Regardless of what they say, don’t give them any information. All you need to know is that you get toner for your copier or printer by calling the Copy Center at extension 1054. You will never need to purchase toner for machines in your area. A quick way to ditch these “toner phoners” is to tell them you would like to transfer them to the person in the organization who purchases toner – they will hang up before you can transfer them!

Women and the Construction of Peace

submitted by truem@augsburg.edu

Carol Rojas will be on campus to give a presentation and a participatory workshop on Women and the Construction of Peace in Colombia.
Monday, October 9th at 7:15pm-9:00pm
Marshall Room-Christensen Center

About the Speaker
“In the Antimilitarist Feminist Network, she learned about working class feminism and discovered the need to collectively build forms of life that invite the transformation of the living conditions of those who have suffered war, hunger, dehumanization, lack of education, work, and health. Changing imagery, denaturalizing war and violence, working towards peace and building women’s power.

Carol Rojas is a popular educator who accompanies formative processes with men and women who live in working class neighborhoods. Her primary objective is to demilitarize and undo the patriarchy that exists in peoples’ bodies and minds so that they can transform their territories based on an antimilitarist working class feminism and the commitment towards the democratization of the Colombian state, which is a key idea for the construction of peace.”

This event is co-sponsored by the Sabo Center, Center for Teaching and Learning, General Education, the History Department and the Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies Department.

Accessibility Workshops for Faculty Next Week

submitted by kilgorem@augsburg.edu

Tuesday, October 10
Accessibility Workshop: Captioning Course Resources
12:00pm-1:00pm, Sverdrup 205

Videos have become an integral part of how we teach, create webpages with multimedia content, as well as provide information during events. Making sure these videos are captioned for students, faculty, staff, and visitors on campus is essential in creating a welcoming and accessible environment. In this session, we’ll address the why-to behind captioning, and well as the how-to so you can have the resources to caption your video content. Sponsored by the CLASS office and the E-Learning Team.

Thursday, October 12
Accessibility Workshop: Creating Accessible Documents
3:00pm-4:00pm, Foss 22B

Creating accessible documents is not only a good idea to ensure all students, faculty, staff, and visitors to our campus have equal access, but as a result of recent changes in the legal world, it’s now the law for us to do so on our campus too. We all have the ability to make our documents accessible to everyone, once we know how to do it. In this session, we’ll go over how to create accessible Microsoft Word and Google Docs. We’ll provide easy steps to create these documents, provide resources for accessible document creation, and feature tools to help check if you are on the right track. In addition, we’ll talk about how to make your Moodle courses accessible as well. Bring a document or Moodle site, and your computer. At the end of the session we will have work time practice these skills. Sponsored by the CLASS office and the E-Learning Team.

Adjunct instructors on contract in the current semester who attend this event are eligible for a $50 stipend. Contact ctl@augsburg.edu after these events to ensure that your attendance was noted!

Earthquake Relief for Mexican Host Families

submitted by hardaker@augsburg.edu

On behalf of CGEE Mexico staff and Mexico Site Director Ann Lutterman-Aguilar, please consider donating to our earthquake relief campaign.

As many of you know, Augsburg has had presence in Cuernavaca, Mexico for over 35 years. Many Augsburg students along with other college students, non-profit organizations, businesses and others, have participated in our life changing programs year after year. Each experience had by our participants includes short stays with host families in the region. These families have expressed generosity, love, and support in hosting students throughout the years.

Many of our host families in the rural parts of Morelos were hit hard by the September 19th earthquake. These families and communities have lost homes in the devastation and are working to rebuild their lives.

Please consider donating to Ann’s campaign to help raise money for these families and communities in need. Even a simple $10 donation or a “share” on a facebook page can go a long way to helping those communities in need that have been so kind and generous with our students over the years.

(*Note: all host families, staff, and current students are safe, none were physically harmed during the earthquake. Our study center in Cuernavaca was not damaged. You can follow our blog and/or social media pages for updates.)

Questions? Email us at ccv@augsburg.edu

Monica McDaniel for the Seward Co-op Board of Directors

submitted by eschenba@augsburg.edu

MSW student and Sabo Center Graduate Fellow, Monica McDaniel, is running for the Seward Community Co-op Board of Directors. Elections are now open and run through the evening of October 23rd. If you are a Seward Co-op member/owner you can vote online or in person at the store.

Monica has been a patron of the Seward Co-op for over 10 years and believes it to be a community space for everyone to engage in dialogue and action around issues relating to food justice. As a youth worker and farmer who has worked at the intersections of food production and consumption, she knows that our food system is disconnected from the land and communities, particularly those on the margins and with non-dominant identities. The Seward Co-op is well-positioned to repair and mend those disconnects, and Monica will help that happen. Please consider voting for her if you are a member/owner.

Today: Interfaith @ Cedar Commons – Lost in Translation

submitted by svanoe@augsburg.edu

“Interfaith @ Cedar Commons: Lost in Translation” Today, Sept 28th 6:30-8:30pm

Religious language can carry heavy meaning. Some words hold sweet memories or deep significance for us, while other words might be associated with painful experiences, exclusion or just feel flat and dead.

Sometimes the language of our own cultural context does not translate clearly to people outside of our tradition. Even those within a religious tradition often don’t have access to the languages in which sacred texts were originally written. How much meaning is lost in translation?

Join us for a meal and an evening of discussion around the language of faith and all the complexity of communicating about deeply held values and beliefs.

Do you need to be a “person of faith” to come? Absolutely not. We welcome anyone with interest in conversation about how faith/spirituality shape our lives and intersect with the issues we care about.

Hosted by: Interfaith @ Cedar Commons organizer team and the Augsburg Interfaith Scholars.

(Cedar Commons, part of Augsburg, is at 2001 Riverside Ave. S – below Trinity’s offices)
