Today, during Chapel Time (10:35 – 11:05) in the Auggie’s Nest, Students for Racial Justice will be hosting an informational meeting for anyone considering joining the group for the upcoming school year. Come to learn about the goals of the group, the application process, and the commitments of an SRJ core member. An additional meeting will be held next Tuesday, April 18th, at 5:30 pm. According to Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) data, more than 250,000 households in the Twin Cities, including approximately one-half of all black and Latino households, either do not have a bank account or use costly services such as check-cashing and payday loans.
Some financial institutions are discovering new markets as they begin to provide needed products and services to previously underserved populations.
Chris Farrell, host of Minnesota Public Radio’s Conversations on the Creative Economy, will discuss how organizations and financial institutions create products and services for markets traditionally not considered. Farrell and panelists will explore questions such as: Can financial institutions do good business while doing good? If some banks have figured out how to serve the unbanked, why haven’t all? What factors affect the ability of individuals to create wealth for themselves and improve the economic vitality of their communities?

In response to last semester’s panel audience asking for a more discussion-based event, please join us for a facilitated discussion about living with disability.
This will include an opportunity to hear first-person narratives of what it’s like to live in today’s world as a disabled individual as well as time for discussion about experiences, misconceptions, assumptions and other issues surrounding disability.
Speakers will include people with a range of experiences, abilities, and disabilities.
Light refreshments will be provided.

The world’s wealthiest nations, with their activities and consumption, continue to drive climate change. The most marginalized communities are least responsible for it and yet bear the weight of its heaviest impacts: the poor, people of color, and indigenous communities. Climate change is foremost an issue of justice.
So what do faith and spirituality have to do with our relationship with the planet? How do our faith communities serve as both a catalyst for powerful change, and a source of denial and complacency?
Join us for an evening of delicious food and conversation with Interfaith Power and Light as we learn from their powerful work and consider how each of us can work together towards a better world.
ABOUT INTERFAITH @ CEDAR COMMONS: Do you need to be a “person of faith” to come? Absolutely not. We welcome anyone with interest in conversation about how faith/spirituality shape our lives and intersect with the issues we care about.

Augsburg College celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton festival. The festival falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments. Over 80 students participate each year, showcasing their research. A “zyzzogeton” is a green leaf-hopper as well as the last word in the Webster Collegiate Dictionary, which is a fitting symbol to mark the end of the academic year. 113 presents, New Music for: Strains -April 7, 2017 | 7:30 p.m. -Sateren Auditorium – Minneapolis based Strains New Music Ensemble specializes in the performance, promotion, and creation of new contemporary chamber music. Since its founding in 2015, Strains has premiered over a dozen compositions by Minnesota composers Katherine Bergman, Joey Crane, Michael Duffy, Sam Krahn, Scott Miller, Ted Moore, Joshua Musikantow, Daniel Nass, and Tiffany Skidmore. They have been featured on concert series in close collaboration with 113 Collective and the Spitting Image Collective, and have given educational workshops to audiences across the Twin Cities. Members are James DeVoll (flute), Jeffery Kyle Hutchins (saxophone), Carlynn Savot (cello), and Jeremy Johnston (percussion).

Today the Environmental Stewardship Committee is taking a field trip to tour the Mdewakanton Sioux Community Organics Recycling Facility. If you are still interested in attending there is room for you! We have transportation provided at no cost and we will have pizza for when we arrive back on campus.
We will be leaving at 3:15pm, a bus will be by the music hall here on campus, and plan to arrive at the facility at 4pm. The tour will take approximately an hour and we will arrive back at Augsburg between 5:30 and 6pm.
The facility asks that you wear closed toed shoes, pants and a long sleeve, all of which you are OK with getting dirty.

Brandon Williams is a current Sophomore at Augsburg. He is majoring in Political Science: Pre-Law with a minor in Economics and Communication Studies. Brandon represents
Augsburg on the Minnesota Association of Private College Students (MAPCS). He is a Act-Six Leadership scholar as well as a current Junior Senator for Student Government. A fun fact about Brandon is that he is the youngest of 7 children on his father’s side of the family, and oldest of 7 siblings on his mother’s side.
Kalyn McConnell is a current Junior at Augsburg. She is a Social Work major with a minor in Psychology. She is currently involved in the LEAD Fellows program at Augsburg. She is also currently Junior Class President for Student Government. She is also the secretary for the Pan Afrikan Student Union at Augsburg. And a fun fact about Kalyn is that she loves working with youth in the communities and she loves to watch and play basketball.
Brandon is running for President and Kalyn is running for Vice President.
Once elected as President and Vice President of Augsburg Day Student Government, our goals are:
1) We would like to strengthen the balance between the students and teachers privileges.
2) We help to increase extra curricular activities amongst students
3) To provide a safe space no matter what race, home or first language, ability, race,age, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin for students.
4) To solidify the ethnic diversity to students.

A Civic Studies Symposium

* Today’s idea of politics refers to what politicians, parties, and party members do. It is based on a Manichean model that sees politics as war-like, reducing others to stereotypes.
* The Manichean model is widespread, built into today’s politics and civic action. It grows from an identifiable formula which pits the forces of “good” against the forces of “evil.”
* It is increasingly dysfunctional for those committed to an inclusive, equal, and just society.
This symposium looks at the nonviolent alternative to demonizing politics. It includes small group discussion about problems we share, differences among us, and what we can do.
It addresses several questions:
* How can we combine relational power and public love?
* How can we develop the skills to meet injustice with discipline and dignity, not demonization?
* How can we bridge today’s ideological divides, engaging others in their full complexity?

Waaberi Group, or “Dawn Players,” was Somalia’s government-sponsored music and dance troupe that included the most talented singers, musicians, and dancers in the country. With more than 300 members over its 30-year existence, the group was a source of national pride and toured the world multiple times. Known for her striking voice and emotional love ballads, Yasin eloquently revives the vintage qaraami (or “Somali jazz”) sound that Waaberi was known for, while bringing it into a modern context.

This year we are unapologetically celebrating and embracing our Blackness with the theme Black Carpet. (Yes, there will actually be a Black Carpet). We want everyone attending Afrikan Night to feel special, and comfortable embracing themselves.

Nimco Yasin rose to fame as part of a member of the legendary Waaberi Group in the 80s. Waaberi Group, or “Dawn Players,” was Somalia’s government-sponsored music and dance troupe that included the most talented singers, musicians, and dancers in the country. With more than 300 members over its 30-year existence, the group was a source of national pride and toured the world multiple times. Known for her striking voice and emotional love ballads, Yasin eloquently revives the vintage qaraami (or “Somali jazz”) sound that Waaberi was known for, while bringing it into a modern context.

Arte de Resistencia/Art of Resistance
Wed., 3/29 from 7:00-9:00 p.m., East Commons, Christensen Center
Explore the topic of political resistance in Latinx and Spanish-speaking communities at this open mic event, where we will share poetry, music, visual arts and manifestos in English and/or Spanish. Bring your own work or something drawn from the inspired work of others that promotes peace and social justice. Come to share, come to listen. All are welcome!
We frame resistance as cultural expressions that unite us in our opposition to oppression and that create paths to freedom and promote justice for all.
Want to participate but not sure how? The Spanish and Cross-Cultural Studies faculty would be happy to help you choose a reading or explore resistance music in Spanish or English. Artwork can include posters, photos or paintings. Music can be of your own composition or created by others. Choose something that inspires you!

More about our speaker: Bill Green
Bill Green began working at Augsburg in 1991 as a Professor of History. Over the years, he has held several different teaching positions, including working as both an Adjunct Associate Professor of History at St. John’s University and as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Leadership, Policy, and Organization at Vanderbilt University. From 2006-2010, he served as the Superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools. Since 2013, he has been back at Augsburg serving as a Professor of History. He regularly teaches Minnesota History, American Legal History, History of Civil Rights, History of African American Religion, 19th Century U.S. History, and History of African American Education.
