Please join the campus community in wishing Benjy Kent the best of luck as he retires after 21 years at Augsburg College. Benjy originally joined Augsburg as the men’s soccer coach. In his time here, Benjy has been the Director of Academic Advising, served as the interim Director of the CLASS Office, and most recently served as the Director of Academic Achievement. Benjy has also taught FYE courses and chaired the retention committee.

In each of these roles Benjy provided leadership and support to students and colleagues alike, with grace, generosity, and care. The breadth of roles Benjy has held at the College serves as a testament to his passion for the students of Augsburg College and embodies the definition of servant leadership.

Benjy leaves a legacy focused on serving students and his colleagues. He is a generous and caring colleague who will be truly missed. Please help us wish Benjy well in the next chapter of his life at a farewell gathering, Thursday, May 25, from 12:30 – 2:00pm, in OGC 100.

Three Augsburg theater alums (Stephanie Lein Walseth ’00, Quinci Bachman ’15, and Malick Ceesay ’17,) and Augsburg Theater Professor Emerita Martha Johnson are all part of the Full Circle Theater Company’s production of Suzan-Lori Parks’ 365 DAYS/PLAYS: A 2017 Remix at Penumbra Theater, St. Paul, OPENING THIS WEEKEND and running through June 11.

Martha Johnson directed an earlier version of this production with a student cast at Augsburg in February 2012. Full Circle’s new version will feature 5 directors (Stephanie Lein Walseth, Harry Waters Jr., Rick Shiomi, Lara Trujillo, Martha Johnson) and a cast of 10 professional actors. Noted actor James A. Williams will be featured opening weekend. Well-known African dancer Patricia Brown choreographs. Quinci Bachman will serve as co-sound designer and stage manager. Malick Ceesay will be props designer and assistant stage manager.

On Wednesday, the Master of Arts in Leadership program will co-host the 3rd Annual Leadership Summit with the Midway Chamber of Commerce. In the morning, MAL grad Diana Pierce will present “Mentoring Emerging Leaders in an Uncertain World”. In addition, Augsburg’s Mary Laurel True will be leading a session entitled “Making Connection Through Community Engagement” which includes a walking tour through Cedar/Riverside.

The noon keynote speaker is Dr. Sylvia Bartley, Global Director at Medtronic Philanthropy. Her topic is “The Power of Leading From Your Heart: An Authentic Form of Innovation & Progressive Leadership.” Sylvia also has a new book out entitled “Turning the Tide: Neuroscience, Spirituality, and My Path Toward Emotional Health”. Past keynote speakers for the Summit have included former Minneapolis Mayor RT Rybak and Jodi Harpstead the CEO of LSS.

The 2016-2017 academic year review period is from May 1 – July 31. Human Resources is offering a training refresher on Wednesday, May 10, from 9-10 a.m. in the Marshall Room.

The training is for staff and supervisors who are either new to Augsburg and haven’t used the online review system, or those who would like a refresher. The session will include a live demonstration and will include information about improvements to the form and process. All staff and supervisors are encouraged to attend.

The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts is hosting a free screening of Prof. Wesley Ellenwood’s film “No Blood Of Mine.” This event at Metropolitan State University’s Film Space in Founders Hall will occur on Friday, May 26th, at 7:30 p.m. After the screening there will be a Q & A with writer and director Wesley Ellenwood and cast member Larry Yazzie (Meskwaki Nation of Central Iowa). Two Augsburg theater alums (Quinci Bachman ‘15 & Stephanie Lein Walseth ’00,) one soon-to-graduate theater major (Malick Ceesay,) & Augsburg Professor Emerita Martha Johnson are all part of the upcoming Full Circle Theater Company’s production of Suzan-Lori Parks’ 365 DAYS/PLAYS: A 2017 Remix at Penumbra Theater, St. Paul, from May 26 – June 11.

Martha Johnson directed an earlier version of this production with a student cast at Augsburg in 2012. Full Circle’s version will feature 6 directors (including Stephanie Lein Walseth, Harry Waters Jr., Rick Shiomi, Lara Trujillo, James Williams, and Martha Johnson) and a cast of 10 professional actors. Well-known African dancer Patricia Brown will choreograph. Quinci Bachman will serve as co-sound designer and stage manager. Malick Ceesay will be props designer and assistant stage manager.

West Bank Clean-up: Friday and Saturday, April 21 – 22nd, 10am-12pm

In 2017 we’re focusing on making the West Bank greener *and* cleaner, and what better weekend to celebrate that than Earth Day weekend?! Stop by our table April 21 or 22, from 10am-12pm. In addition to tasty snacks, we’ll have information about garbage and recycling can adoption, neighborhood clean-ups, and graffiti removal. We’ll also be distributing graffiti removal kits and supplies and will have sign-up sheets for hosted clean-ups.

Help us reach our targets! Our goals this year are: 5 more adopted trash cans, 10 *NEW* recycling cans, and 5 extra clean-ups.

Event featuring 2 amazing artists from Honduras… Melissa Cardoza and Karla Lara.

Friday, April 21st 1:50pm-3:00pm, Foss Studio

Melissa Cardoza’s book “13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance” tells 13 stories of women who joined the resistance to the U.S. backed 2009 coup d’etat. Melissa is a fearless Afro-indigenous journalist, poet, writer, and feminist organizer from Honduras.

Melissa will be touring with her fellow member of the Honduran Red de Defensoras (or network of women rights defenders) and beloved jazz/folk protest singer Karla Lara, who appears in one of the book’s stories and has been an icon and sharp voice for the resistance. Both of the women were close friends of Berta Cáceres, the Honduran indigenous leader and organizer of COPINH, who was assassinated for her work in defense of the Lenca people and against patriarchy, capitalism, and racism. This book and this tour are dedicated to Berta.

Katie Koch ’01, director of alumni and constituent relations, will share her experiences and photos from the recent trip to Germany, which celebrated the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, and will speak about the history of the travel program. Professor Kathy Swanson, who led the January 2017 trip to Thailand and Cambodia, will highlight her travel stories and photos. The cost of this event is $30 per person. Course includes: screening of scenes and learning how the meaning is constructed through film language, generating ideas for short scenes, creating a shot list, principal photography, and editing.

Jubilee Prosser received the 2017 Boren Scholarship, $8,000 for summer language and cultural study in Tanzania. Jubilee is our first recipient ever (or at least for many years). Boren Scholarships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.

Jubilee is double majoring in biology and environmental studies while minoring in political science. A Presidential Scholar and Honors Program Participant, she also conducted URGO summer research with Dr. Emily Schilling, completed the River Semester and a 4-month study abroad experience in Kenya. Her long-term plans are to earn a Master’s of Public Health degree in epidemiology or environmental health. Because of her long-term goals, Jubilee has decided to turn down the Boren award to conduct research with epidemiologist Mark Travers at the Roswell Park Institute for Cancer Research in Buffalo, New York this summer. She is considering applying for Boren again at the graduate level.

Boren has opportunities for semester ($10,000) to one year ($20,000) study abroad experiences for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the shorter summer experience for STEM undergraduates. Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

Come to the student lounge Thursday 4/20 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. to get information and stress relief tips including free chair massages, coloring, aromatherapy, therapy dogs, Active Minds and more. There will also be a drawing for prizes for those who attend. After the stress less fest head up for some yoga in East Commons starting at 9 p.m.

Mu Performing Arts will host the first Minnesota Taiko Drumming Festival on April 28 & 29 at the Guthrie Theater. FREE mini-concerts, workshops, and family activities will be open to the public from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, April 29.

In addition, a ticketed performance will be held at 7pm on Friday and Staurday, April 28 & 29, with $20 student tickets.

Auditions for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir will be held in the Music Building (Choir Room – M3) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24, 25 and 26.

HISTORY: The choir, now in its 84th year, is one of Augsburg’s oldest ongoing organizations. For the past 37 years it has been the anchor ensemble of the college’s Advent Vespers which is attended by some 8000 people each year.

THIS NEXT YEAR: Mark Sedio (’76) will continue as conductor for this forthcoming academic year. In addition to his role at Augsburg, Sedio is Cantor (Director of Music) at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis. He is a widely published composer, choral and organ clinician, stand-up comedian, teacher and a specialist in multi-cultural/world music. This forthcoming year the choir will not only focus on choral repertoire from Europe (i.e. Iceland, Slovakia, Germany, Estonia), the United States and Latin America – but will partner with the National Lutheran Choir and Palestinian ethnomusicologist Zafer Tawil for a program highlighting music of the Middle East and North Africa.

SCHEDULE: The Augsburg Choir meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:30 to 6:00 (usually 5:40 to accommodate evening classes).

WHO? YOU! Membership in the choir (by audition) is open to ANY and ALL Augsburg undergraduate students – regardless of discipline/major. Over the years we’ve worked out schedules to include those involved in athletics (football, soccer, lacrosse) and theater.

HOW? Sign-up sheets for auditions will be available at the CHOIR DESK in Christensen Hall (10:30 to 11:30) and will then be posted outside the choir room in the music building. No preparation necessary.

In celebration of Earth Day there will be several neighborhood clean-ups taking place around Augsburg on Saturday, April 22. In the Seward Neighborhood, a clean-up along Franklin Avenue and the I-94 frontage road will be happening from 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Meet at the Franklin Housing Co-op at 2300 Franklin Ave. There will be three community clean-ups taking place in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood: Riverside Park (9:00 – 11:00 a.m.; 2820 S. 8th Street); Bluff Street Park (9:30 a.m.- 12 p.m.; 1 20th Ave. S.); and Currie Park (1 p.m. – 3 p.m.; 500 15th Ave. S.). Bags, gloves, and other supplies will be provided.
