Please join the Augsburg community in congratulating Kathy McBride on her 30 years of service to Augsburg University! Kathy is the Regional Co-Director of the Central America program for the Center for Global Education and Experience, and she will be retiring at the end of 2017.

In her time with Augsburg, Kathy has taught countless students from Augsburg and around the country on the Central America semester program as well as individuals learning about the region via short-term educational seminars. Kathy has lead with a critical eye and a generous heart, always holding her students and Augsburg to the highest standard. Kathy is a caring colleague whose impact on Augsburg and its legacy is far reaching. In addition to her service to Augsburg, all four of her children attended Augsburg, and two of them married fellow Auggies!

Kathy will be on campus October 23-27, so we will celebrate her in person! Students, staff, faculty and administrators are all welcome.

This experimental documentary by Zack and Adam Khalil explores the Ojibwe story of the Seven Fires Prophecy, which has been interpreted as predicting the arrival of the Europeans in North America and the subsequent destruction they caused. A group of Auggies will travel to Gustavus Adolphus College on the 26th to gather with students from other colleges and representatives from ~22 Seminary and Divinity Schools around the country for this special day of vocational reflection conversations! The theme for the day is from Psalm 119:125, “I am your Servant, Give me Discernment.”

Whether you’re curious to test the waters of seminary or divinity school, or you know for certain it’s something you want to do, this day is for you! Seminary & Divinity School Day is a great opportunity to explore the variety of options.

On Tuesday, October 24, as part of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation series, we are excited to have Mary Lowe, associate professor of Religion at Augsburg University, lecture on: Martin Luther on the Body, Our Bodies, and the Body of Creation.

Martin Luther wrote, “There are three elements in a human, the body, the soul, and the spirit.” Many of today’s complex issues involve our bodies and the body of creation: climate change, gender and sexuality, abuse, and deforestation, etc.

Professor Lowe will introduce Luther’s perspectives on bodies and creation and examine how—even today—his theology can help us better understand and address these embodied challenges.

This event is free and open to the public, and will take place in Hoversten Chapel from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm and will include a discussion and a reception.

Spend your spring break in Mexico and earn 4 credits!!!

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.

You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:
AIS 305 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (elective course)
AIS 490 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (Keystone course)
CCS 295 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for CCS major of one travel seminar and an elective, OR general elective for non-majors)
SPA 495 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for one culture class or one elective (for the SPA major or minor))

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

On Tuesday, October 24, as part of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation series, we are excited to have Mary Lowe, associate professor of Religion at Augsburg University, lecture on: Martin Luther on the Body, Our Bodies, and the Body of Creation.

Martin Luther wrote, “There are three elements in a human, the body, the soul, and the spirit.” Many of today’s complex issues involve our bodies and the body of creation: climate change, gender and sexuality, abuse, and deforestation, etc.

Professor Lowe will introduce Luther’s perspectives on bodies and creation and examine how—even today—his theology can help us better understand and address these embodied challenges.

This event is free and open to the public, and will take place in Hoversten Chapel from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm and will include a discussion and a reception.

A group of Auggies will travel to Gustavus Adolphus College on the 26th to gather with students from other colleges and representatives from ~22 Seminary and Divinity Schools around the country for this special day of vocational reflection conversations! The theme for the day is from Psalm 119:125, “I am your Servant, Give me Discernment.”

Whether you’re curious to test the waters of seminary or divinity school, or you know for certain it’s something you want to do, this day is for you! Seminary & Divinity School Day is a great opportunity to explore the variety of options.

On Saturday, October 14, a truck packed with explosives detonated in the heart of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, killing at least 300 people and seriously injuring hundreds more. It is one of the most lethal terrorist attacks that has happened anywhere in the world for many years. This tragedy touches many Minnesota families, including Augsburg students, faculty, staff, and alumni who have lost loved ones in the blast.

In response to this violence, Campus Ministry and the Muslim Student Association offer a space for reflection and healing. All are invited to attend on Tuesday afternoon at 5:00pm for prayer and Somali tea.

Also, Jummah (Friday Prayer) will be extended to include prayers for Mogadishu. It will be from 1:30 to 2:30pm in Hoversten Chapel.

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.

You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:

Brian, Aaron, Krista and Sonja will help to resurrect some of the history of the Music-Theater club on-campus and share where their journeys and lives in the arts have led.

Spend your spring break in Mexico and earn 4 credits!!!

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.

You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:
AIS 305 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (elective course)
AIS 490 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (Keystone course)
CCS 295 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for CCS major of one travel seminar and an elective, OR general elective for non-majors)
SPA 495 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for one culture class or one elective (for the SPA major or minor))

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

It’s a chance for you to mingle with your peers, catch up with your favorite professors, check-out some of our new equipment, and learn about the department if you are not a film major/minor but are interested. The open house will be held Oct. 18th from 11am-12pm in Foss 171, the media lab, and the edit suite. There will be snacks and some freebies.

Feeling haunted by the Halloween spirit? Call your friends and make a short horror film this fall! Augsburg University students are invited to submit their short films with spooky/scary content to be screened at the Augsburg Student Spooky Film Festival, hosted by Augsburg Art Club. The free screening will be held in Sateren Auditorium on Wed. October 25th, with popcorn and candy available. You will be able to vote on your favorite films at the end of the screening, and the filmmaker with the highest voted film will receive a prize. The time limit for films is 10 minutes, and films can be submitted by uploading a high-quality version of your work to Google Drive and then sharing it with olsonl@augsburg.edu. This experimental documentary by Zack and Adam Khalil explores the Ojibwe story of the Seven Fires Prophecy, which has been interpreted as predicting the arrival of the Europeans in North America and the subsequent destruction they caused. Bold, smart, and unflinching, the film examines the relationship between cultural tradition and modern indigenous identity.

On Tuesday, October 24, as part of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation series, we are excited to have Mary Lowe, associate professor of Religion at Augsburg University, lecture on: Martin Luther on the Body, Our Bodies, and the Body of Creation.

Martin Luther wrote, “There are three elements in a human, the body, the soul, and the spirit.” Many of today’s complex issues involve our bodies and the body of creation: climate change, gender and sexuality, abuse, and deforestation, etc.

Professor Lowe will introduce Luther’s perspectives on bodies and creation and examine how—even today—his theology can help us better understand and address these embodied challenges.

This event is free and open to the public, and will take place in Hoversten Chapel from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm and will include a discussion and a reception.

A group of Auggies will travel to Gustavus Adolphus College on the 26th to gather with students from other colleges and representatives from ~22 Seminary and Divinity Schools around the country for this special day of vocational reflection conversations! The theme for the day is from Psalm 119:125, “I am your Servant, Give me Discernment.”

Whether you’re curious to test the waters of seminary or divinity school, or you know for certain it’s something you want to do, this day is for you! Seminary & Divinity School Day is a great opportunity to explore the variety of options.

This event is free, and lunch and transportation to Gustavus Adolphus College will be provided through the Christensen Center for Vocation. We will leave Augsburg at 8:00 am and return around 4:00 pm.
