Augsburg Total Wellness is pleased to announce a May brown bag lunch and learn information session presented by the Physicians Neck & Back Clinics. Join us to learn simple and practical exercises that can be done at home or at work to improve spinal fitness.

West Bank Clean-up: Friday and Saturday, April 21 – 22nd, 10am-12pm

In 2017 we’re focusing on making the West Bank greener *and* cleaner, and what better weekend to celebrate that than Earth Day weekend?! Stop by our table April 21 or 22, from 10am-12pm. In addition to tasty snacks, we’ll have information about garbage and recycling can adoption, neighborhood clean-ups, and graffiti removal. We’ll also be distributing graffiti removal kits and supplies and will have sign-up sheets for hosted clean-ups.

Help us reach our targets! Our goals this year are: 5 more adopted trash cans, 10 *NEW* recycling cans, and 5 extra clean-ups.

Stop by for more information, to sign up, OR to pick up supplies for your earth day cleanup activities!

Event featuring 2 amazing artists from Honduras… Melissa Cardoza and Karla Lara.

Friday, April 21st 1:50pm-3:00pm, Foss Studio

Melissa Cardoza’s book “13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance” tells 13 stories of women who joined the resistance to the U.S. backed 2009 coup d’etat. Melissa is a fearless Afro-indigenous journalist, poet, writer, and feminist organizer from Honduras.

Melissa will be touring with her fellow member of the Honduran Red de Defensoras (or network of women rights defenders) and beloved jazz/folk protest singer Karla Lara, who appears in one of the book’s stories and has been an icon and sharp voice for the resistance. Both of the women were close friends of Berta Cáceres, the Honduran indigenous leader and organizer of COPINH, who was assassinated for her work in defense of the Lenca people and against patriarchy, capitalism, and racism. This book and this tour are dedicated to Berta.

“13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance by Melissa Cardoza is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about the many contours of Honduran feminists fighting for self-determination and dignity. Jubilee Prosser received the 2017 Boren Scholarship, $8,000 for summer language and cultural study in Tanzania. Jubilee is our first recipient ever (or at least for many years). Boren Scholarships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.

Jubilee is double majoring in biology and environmental studies while minoring in political science. A Presidential Scholar and Honors Program Participant, she also conducted URGO summer research with Dr. Emily Schilling, completed the River Semester and a 4-month study abroad experience in Kenya. Her long-term plans are to earn a Master’s of Public Health degree in epidemiology or environmental health. Because of her long-term goals, Jubilee has decided to turn down the Boren award to conduct research with epidemiologist Mark Travers at the Roswell Park Institute for Cancer Research in Buffalo, New York this summer. She is considering applying for Boren again at the graduate level.

Boren has opportunities for semester ($10,000) to one year ($20,000) study abroad experiences for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the shorter summer experience for STEM undergraduates. Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

Mu Performing Arts will host the first Minnesota Taiko Drumming Festival on April 28 & 29 at the Guthrie Theater. FREE mini-concerts, workshops, and family activities will be open to the public from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, April 29.

In addition, a ticketed performance will be held at 7pm on Friday and Staurday, April 28 & 29, with $20 student tickets.

Auditions for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir will be held in the Music Building (Choir Room – M3) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24, 25 and 26.

HISTORY: The choir, now in its 84th year, is one of Augsburg’s oldest ongoing organizations. For the past 37 years it has been the anchor ensemble of the college’s Advent Vespers which is attended by some 8000 people each year.

THIS NEXT YEAR: Mark Sedio (’76) will continue as conductor for this forthcoming academic year. In addition to his role at Augsburg, Sedio is Cantor (Director of Music) at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis. He is a widely published composer, choral and organ clinician, stand-up comedian, teacher and a specialist in multi-cultural/world music. This forthcoming year the choir will not only focus on choral repertoire from Europe (i.e. Iceland, Slovakia, Germany, Estonia), the United States and Latin America – but will partner with the National Lutheran Choir and Palestinian ethnomusicologist Zafer Tawil for a program highlighting music of the Middle East and North Africa.

SCHEDULE: The Augsburg Choir meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:30 to 6:00 (usually 5:40 to accommodate evening classes).

WHO? YOU! Membership in the choir (by audition) is open to ANY and ALL Augsburg undergraduate students – regardless of discipline/major. Over the years we’ve worked out schedules to include those involved in athletics (football, soccer, lacrosse) and theater.

HOW? Sign-up sheets for auditions will be available at the CHOIR DESK in Christensen Hall (10:30 to 11:30) and will then be posted outside the choir room in the music building. No preparation necessary.

In the Seward Neighborhood, a clean-up along Franklin Avenue and the I-94 frontage road will be happening from 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Meet at the Franklin Housing Co-op at 2300 Franklin Ave. There will be three community clean-ups taking place in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood: Riverside Park (9:00 – 11:00 a.m.; 2820 S. 8th Street); Bluff Street Park (9:30 a.m.- 12 p.m.; 1 20th Ave. S.); and Currie Park (1 p.m. – 3 p.m.; 500 15th Ave. S.). The Nobel Peace Prize Forum is seeking students who can act as hosts for visiting students in the Fall of 2017. Students are asked to step forward as hosts to other college and university students who will be visiting the Twin Cities for the Forum from the 14th-16th of September.
If you know you are living on campus next Fall, then you would make a perfect host! Anderson, Luther, and Mortensen would make great spaces for visiting students to stay, but any on campus living area would be fantastic. We are looking for students who would be willing to help out and provide space for 2-3 nights.
As a host you will have the opportunity to get to know a student outside of Augsburg. It is a great experience that allows you to meet some new faces and contribute to the college’s rich academic community. By being a host you can get to know a student from another college or university and get to know more about other colleges and how they run. You will be the student’s best introduction to the city! If you want to gain a new connection and meet students from other colleges/universities, then this is perfect for you!

Event featuring 2 amazing artists from Honduras… Melissa Cardoza and Karla Lara.

Melissa Cardoza’s book 13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance tells thirteen stories of women who joined the resistance to the U.S. backed 2009 coup d’etat. Melissa is an an afro-indigenous fearless journalist, poet, writer, and feminist organizer from Honduras.

Melissa will be touring with her fellow member of the Honduran Red de Defensoras or network of women rights defenders and beloved jazz/folk protest singer Karla Lara, who appears in one of the book’s stories and has been an icon and sharp voice for the resistance. Both of the women were close friends of Berta Cáceres, the Honduran indigenous leader and organizer of COPINH who was assassinated for her work in defense of the Lenca people and against patriarchy, capitalism and racism. This book and this tour are dedicated to Berta.

A “zyzzogeton” is a green leaf-hopper as well as the last word in the Webster Collegiate Dictionary, which is a fitting symbol to mark the end of the academic year. Augsburg alum Amanda Lipsky has requested volunteers to help keep the April 22nd March for Science Minnesota route clean! Check out the message below and e-mail MarchForScienceLitterPatrol@gmail.com to sign up!

We need volunteers to join us at the start point of the march, Cathedral Hill, at 10:30am to form our Litter Patrol and prepare our march cleanup. We will provide bags to collect litter along the march route: separate bags for trash and for recyclables. Members of the Litter Patrol will collect litter as we march. After the march and rally, the Litter Patrol will pick up any litter at the rally site, the Minnesota State Capitol Mall. Our goal is to be environmentally responsible by ensuring the March for Science – Minnesota leaves the march route cleaner than we found it, and that anything recyclable is brought to a recycling center, not left in the trash. All the trash and recyclables that the Litter Patrol gathers will be responsibly disposed of.

FULL DAY: We need as many people as possible to commit to the full day, as outlined above.

If you have little time, small children to accommodate, or a bus home to catch there are two shorter shifts available for your convenience.

Shift 1: show up at Cathedral Hill at 10:30 and help with Litter Patrol until we reach the rally site at the capitol. Turn in your trash bags at the rally site. You can go home immediately after the rally.

Shift 2: Meet up with the Litter Patrol just outside the rally site at 12:00 Noon and get your trash bags. Stay to clean up after the rally for as long as you’re available and we need help.

Thank you for marching for science! As an Augsburg alumna it makes me very proud to see my college partnering with the March For Science Minnesota and leading the way in ecologically sound practices.

According to Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) data, more than 250,000 households in the Twin Cities, including approximately one-half of all black and Latino households, either do not have a bank account or use costly services such as check-cashing and payday loans.

Some financial institutions are discovering new markets as they begin to provide needed products and services to previously underserved populations.

Chris Farrell, host of Minnesota Public Radio’s Conversations on the Creative Economy, will discuss how organizations and financial institutions create products and services for markets traditionally not considered. Farrell and panelists will explore questions such as: Can financial institutions do good business while doing good? If some banks have figured out how to serve the unbanked, why haven’t all? What factors affect the ability of individuals to create wealth for themselves and improve the economic vitality of their communities?

The story follows Youth, a young Black man raised in the idyllic hills of California, as he passes through life, learning about himself and the world around him, through music and the people he meets because of it. Throughout his journey for “the real,” he gains so much, but is what he gives up too much? Will the ends justify the means? Will everything be alright?

113 presents, New Music for: Strains -April 7, 2017 | 7:30 p.m. -Sateren Auditorium – Minneapolis based Strains New Music Ensemble specializes in the performance, promotion, and creation of new contemporary chamber music. Since its founding in 2015, Strains has premiered over a dozen compositions by Minnesota composers Katherine Bergman, Joey Crane, Michael Duffy, Sam Krahn, Scott Miller, Ted Moore, Joshua Musikantow, Daniel Nass, and Tiffany Skidmore. They have been featured on concert series in close collaboration with 113 Collective and the Spitting Image Collective, and have given educational workshops to audiences across the Twin Cities. Members are James DeVoll (flute), Jeffery Kyle Hutchins (saxophone), Carlynn Savot (cello), and Jeremy Johnston (percussion).

Today the Environmental Stewardship Committee is taking a field trip to tour the Mdewakanton Sioux Community Organics Recycling Facility. If you are still interested in attending there is room for you! We have transportation provided at no cost and we will have pizza for when we arrive back on campus.

We will be leaving at 3:15pm, a bus will be by the music hall here on campus, and plan to arrive at the facility at 4pm. The tour will take approximately an hour and we will arrive back at Augsburg between 5:30 and 6pm.

The facility asks that you wear closed toed shoes, pants and a long sleeve, all of which you are OK with getting dirty.
