Athletic Facility Break Hours

Augsburg’s athletic facilities will have modified hours during the holiday break, with open times in the two fitness centers in Si Melby Hall/Kennedy Center available to Augsburg students, faculty, staff and alumni (all users must have Augsburg ID and fobs). There are no scheduled open gym, dome, hockey or figure skating times during break. Hours for the fitness centers are listed below.

Apply for Off-campus Summer Research – workshop 1/15

Get paid to conduct scientific research with some of the nation’s top academics at universities, labs, or institutes through a summer research program. Such programs are a great way to enhance your education, meet new people, and explore a new city!

Application deadlines for these programs are most often near the start of next semester (January, February), so Winter Break is the perfect time to get started! URGO will be hosting a workshop January 15th where students will receive one on one advising and feedback on their applications. Students are encouraged to send their application essays to urgo@augsburg.edu prior to the workshop to make the most of the time.

Summer Undergraduate Research in Biomedical Ethics

The Mayo Clinic seeks applicants for its 2018 summer undergraduate research program in biomedical ethics. This program is highly competitive and 4-5 students will be selected. Each student will be placed with a faculty mentor for approximately 10 weeks. Students will participate in educational session on bioethics research and lunch meetings with faculty.
Interested applicants should apply to job posting 87872BR: Bioethics Intern on the Mayo Clinic jobs website (http://www.mayoclinic.org/jobs ) by January 12, 2018.
Candidates must attach the following to the online application:
1. Cover letter describing your careers goals & how bioethics research relates to those goals

Post-Baccalaureate Program in Biomedical Ethics Research

The Mayo Clinic seeks applicants for a one-year, 2018-2019 academic year, post-baccalaureate research experience in empirical biomedical ethics as part of the Mayo Clinic Graduate Research Employment Program (GREP). GREP is designed for individuals who plan to attend graduate or medical school and must receive their bachelor’s degree before the position starts.
Interested applicants should email the following materials to bioethics@mayo.edu by March 16, 2018.
1. Cover letter describing your careers goals and how biomedical ethics research relates to those plans
2. Resume/CV including your major, relevant coursework, honors, and related experiences
3. 5-10 page writing sample (such as a course paper), preferably on a topic in bioethics
4. Current college transcript
5. Two letters of recommendation from research mentors or professors. Letters should be sent directly to Dr. Richard Sharp, Program Director, by the recommender.

New Youth Studies Major

If you see yourself working with children and youth as an educator, social worker, minister, coach, or in any other capacity then you should consider adding the Youth Studies minor to your course of studies. Follow the link for more info. There is a youth studies course being offered this spring – YST320: Working with Children and Youth on T/Th from 12:00 p.m. – 1:40pm. Consider adding this class and joining this new and important program.

Today Is the Last Day of Fall Semester in the WL

Today is the last day of fall semester in the Writing Lab. So far, tutors have conducted over 950 sessions with grad and undergrad students this fall. If you need some last minute help from the wonderful writing tutors, now is the time! The Lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library and is just left of the circulation desk. No appointments are taken.
Here are the hours for Wednesday, Dec. 20:

Note – The Lab will close after the Wed. night shift on Dec. 20!

Augsburg University Sesquicentennial Grant Call for Proposals

The Sesquicentennial Academic Sub-Committee is looking for project ideas and project leaders that will make the celebration of our Sesquicentennial year a special year for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Augsburg. Funds are available for evocative projects of all kinds that reflect Augsburg’s mission, academic excellence and community. The 150th anniversary will be celebrated between Homecoming 2019 and Homecoming 2020. Our aim is to have all Sesquicentennial projects identified by Spring 2018.

College Possible is recruiting for Spring Semester

College Possible supports low-income students with college success through 1:1 coaching on academics, financial aid, and personal development. Our hope is that students can apply now, or during the break so that they will be ready to go once the spring semester starts.

Are you looking for a paid summer research opportunity here on campus? URGO applications for 2018 summer research are now available on the URGO website at http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/. All fields of study welcome!

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $4,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $2,000 stipend. The program runs from May 14th – July 27th.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,000 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 1st, so start talking with your faculty now to learn about what research is going on in your department!

Auggie Pride Awards – Taking Nominations for December

Staff Senate is seeking nominations for the Auggie Pride Award! The Auggie Pride Award is given to staff members who have gone above and beyond to serve Augsburg and fulfill its mission and values. Reasons to acknowledge a staff member can include a variety of things, such as the completion of a project, the implementation of an innovative idea, or simply giving directions to a lost campus guest.

NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship: application deadline Friday, Jan. 19

Students can now apply for the 2017-18 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship Program at Augsburg College. This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2018, in the following areas:
**Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Four scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
**Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Two scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
-are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
-can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission.

Please note that students from traditionally underrepresented groups in science and mathematics fields are especially encouraged to apply. No applicant shall be denied consideration based on race, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, or ability.

Deadline for application: Friday, January 19, 2017.

NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship

LSAMP NSS Funding Opportunities for Underrepresented Students in STEM

Are you an underrepresented student pursuing a degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)? If so, you might be eligible to participate in LSAMP North Star STEM (NSS). Augsburg’s LSAMP NSS program is designed to help STEM students succeed through peer mentoring, workshops, research opportunities, industry visits, and conference travel. LSAMP NSS funding opportunities include:

-Professional development stipends (up to $500) for participation in LSAMP NSS programming
-Travel funding for professional STEM conferences (including airfare and lodging)
-Academic year or summer research funding (contingent on mentor match)

STEM majors at Augsburg: biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, physics

LSAMP NSS eligibility:
-Full-time student pursuing a STEM major.
-US citizen or permanent resident.
-Underrepresented in STEM as defined by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This includes being Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American, Alaska Native or Pacific Islander.

The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is an initiative funded by the NSF to support underrepresented students pursuing a STEM degree. Minnesota’s LSAMP program is called the North Star STEM Alliance and includes 17 colleges, universities and community organizations.

Thanks to A’viand’s food service for making the great food – and to the faculty, staff and students who helped serve nearly 400 students. Late Night Breakfast was Mon., Dec. 18, and servers included President Pribbenow, Dianne Detloff, Marc Isaacson, Fardosa Hassan, Matt Maruggi, Francesca Chiari, and Craig Schleisman. The cheese omelet team was Carol Enke and Bridget Robinson-Riegler, and Sarah Griesse and Eric Pegues greeted, along with Residence Life staff Anthony Wilder, Gayle Smaller and Seth Reuter.

LSAMP NSS Funding for National Society of Black Engineers Convention

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is holding its 44th annual convention March 21-25, 2018 in Pittsburgh, PA. NSBE’s mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.” (www.nsbe.org) Students who have attended in past years have found the conference to be an excellent professional development opportunity.

Augsburg students who are eligible for funding through LSAMP NSS may apply for travel funding to attend the NSBE convention.
