Greetings Augsburg Students, Faculty, and Staff!

Are you interested in discussions concerning faith and interfaith dialogue? Are you curious about the various ways the term “calling” plays into the lives of people of differing faiths? If so, consider attending this thought-provoking event!

On Thursday, February 2nd, 2017 at 6:30 pm in Oren Gateway Center Room 100 Augsburg will be hosting “Calling in Today’s World: Multifaith Perspectives” an event aimed at discovering how and if different faiths share similar senses of calling as Christians do in their concept of vocation.

Three panelists from different faith backgrounds will come together to discuss the meaning of calling in their faiths, these panelists are Mark Berkson, Rabbi Amy Eilberg and Fardosa Hassan.

Mark Berkson is professor and chair in the Department of Religion at Hamline University. His work on Confucian and Daoist thought has appeared in numerous books and journals. His lecture series for the Great Courses, Cultivating Literacy for Religion, was released in 2012. His current project is Death, Immortality and the Afterlife: A Comparative Perspective.

Rabbi Amy Eilberg, the first woman ordained a rabbi in Judaism’s Conservative Movement, teaches and practices inter-religious and intra-Jewish dialogue. Deeply involved in the work of peace and reconciliation, she is the author of From Enemy to Friend: Jewish Wisdom and the Pursuit of Peace (Orbis Books, 2014).

Fardosa Hassan is Muslim Student Program Associate at Augsburg College. She also works as the Interfaith Youth Connection Program Coordinator at Interfaith Action of Greater Saint Paul.

The event will be moderated by Martha Stortz, the Bernhard M. Christensen Professor of Religion and Vocation at Augsburg College. She is the author of A World According to God: Practices for Putting Faith at the Center of Your Life and Blessed to Follow: The Beatitudes As a Compass for Discipleship.

Professor Wesley Ellenwood’s film No Blood Of Mine has been selected by the St. Paul Frozen Film Festival. This festival is a celebration of independent film created by filmmakers from around the world and will take place February 1-4, 2017 in St. Paul.

Disturbing the Peace is a story of the human potential unleashed when we stop participating in a story that no longer serves us and, with the power of our convictions, take action to create new possibilities. The film follows former enemy combatants — Israeli soldiers and Palestinian fighters — who have joined together to challenge the status quo and say “enough.” When someone is willing to disturb the status quo and stand for the dream of a free and secure world, who will stand with them?

A new report was released recently by the National Association of Scholars (NAS) called, Making Citizens: How Universities Teach Civics. The report targets “the civic engagement movement” in higher education which the authors claim is aimed at turning today’s younger generation of students, both college and K-12, into left wing activists. This includes service learning, various kinds of civic engagement and community involvement. NAS is planning a state by state campaign with state legislators to defund service learning and other kinds of community involvement.

Augsburg is highlighted in the report for its long history in service learning and experiential education, and a great deal of attention is given specifically to Public Achievement, the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship’s youth empowerment initiative, and our theory of public work. NAS has invited Harry Boyte to submit a response to the report.

Disturbing the Peace is a story of the human potential unleashed when we stop participating in a story that no longer serves us and, with the power of our convictions, take action to create new possibilities. The film follows former enemy combatants — Israeli soldiers and Palestinian fighters — who have joined together to challenge the status quo and say “enough.” When someone is willing to disturb the status quo and stand for the dream of a free and secure world, who will stand with them?

The Minneapolis screening will take place here at Augsburg Campus:

Soup and Sexuality: From the Same Spirit: Receiving the Theological Gifts of Transgender Christians

Hmong Women Together (HWT) and Augsburg Student Activities Council (ASAC) will be hosting a Hmong film, 1985, by Kang Vang in Sateren Auditorium on Friday, January 20 at 6 p.m. This event is FREE and open to the public.

This coming-of-age story follows four friends in the summer of 1985, who venture out on a perilous journey to find a mythical dragon dwelling in a mysterious and forgotten lake somewhere in the great wilderness of… Minnesota. This totally rad adventure has them encounter some bad dudes, break dance battles, and run-ins with memorable characters along the way. A story about the shared journey of all Hmong-Americans, 1985 will remind you of the power of true friendship and the strength of love.

But… will our heroes find that dragon?

Disturbing the Peace follows former enemy combatants–Israeli soldiers from elite units and Palestinian fighters, many of whom served years in prison–who have joined together to challenge the status quo and say “enough.” The film reveals their transformational journeys from soldiers to nonviolent peace activists leading to the creation of Combatants for Peace. They stand in a long line of individuals – from Gandhi to MLK Jr., to Rosa Parks–willing to “disturb the peace,” in an effort to move us all toward a more just and peaceful world.

In celebration of The Dodge Nature Center’s 50th Anniversary, the internationally renowned journalist and author, Richard Louv, will be the featured speaker at the Fitzgerald Theater in downtown St. Paul on Thursday, Feb. 9th at 7:30.

Richard coined the term “nature deficit disorder” in his book Last Child in The Woods. This work helped launch an international movement to connect children and families to nature. His most recent book, Vitamin N, was published this past year. It expands on the idea that experiences in nature are foundational to learning, development, and wellness in children and adults. A generous donor has made available 25 tickets (normally $25-100) for students.

STRANGE, a Tony award-winning musical, is a genre-bending exploration of an artist’s journey to find life’s truths. The story follows Youth, a young
Black man raised in the idyllic hills of California, as he passes through
life, learning about himself and the world around him, through music and
the people he meets because of it. Throughout his journey for “the real,”
he gains so much, but is what he gives up too much? Will the ends justify
the means? Will everything be alright?

*Audition details:*

This audition will be broken into 3 segments, singing, dancing and acting,
each taking place on separate days. In order to be cast, you will need to
prepare for and perform each one of the parts, requiring you to be present
for a portion of all 3 days. Please note, you must sign up for each day’s
activity.

If you are unable to attend one of these sessions, we ask that you sign up
for the dates and times you are able to make and contact Jamil directly to
reschedule at an alternative date.

Join the Auggie Athletic Department in our 1st annual “Stock the Campus Cupboard” food drive. Athletes and coaches are joining together to help make sure our campus cupboard is stocked and ready to serve our students for the spring semester.

Come support our Auggie basketball teams on Saturday, January 14th (WBB @ 1pm, MBB @ 3pm) and drop off your non-perishable items to donate to the Campus Cupboard. If you can’t make it on the 14th, items can be dropped anytime to Jane Becker (Si Melby 137), or directly to the Campus Cupboard.
