Greetings Augsburg Community,
The Distinguished Gentlemen of Color (DGC), sponsored by Auggie Athletics, cordially invite you to a screening of the film “Higher Learning” followed by an intimate discussion on race & social justice Thursday, November 19th 2020 from 6-9pm in Hoversten Chapel. The Distinguished Gentlemen of Color, sponsored by Augsburg Athletics, is a group of BIPOC students focused on networking, education and leadership. This event is open to the Augsburg community and is limited to 40 participants. Higher Learning follows three incoming freshmen as they begin college at fictional Columbus University. Students confront issues of race, gender and economics as they struggle to keep it together.

This event will be hosted in compliance with all COVID-19 protocols required by the MN Department of Health & Augsburg University. Registrants must pre-register, provide clearance through the Campus Clear app and wear a mask for the duration of the event. In addition, temperature screenings will be conducted on-site.

The Faculty and Staff of Color Lunch is today at 12:30 to 1:30 PM! These lunches are mainly for faculty and staff of color at Augsburg University to gather, break bread, and connect. There will be no set agenda other than expectations to try and get to know folks you don’t already know and build community. There will also be a small amount of time at the end of the lunches set aside for folks to make announcements.

The Augsburg Queer Student Resilience Campaign needs your support! Our goal is to raise $10,000. These funds would go directly into the pockets of LGBTQIA+ students at Augsburg. Funds would be allocated in two parts: 1. Scholarships awarded at our annual LGBTQIA+ graduation ceremony – Lavender Celebration, and 2. For much of history, humans have grappled with questions of meaning and belonging within institutions like churches and civic groups. Today, especially in the time of social distancing and online learning, more and more people are moving their search for connection and significance into digital space. The work of being human — exploring life’s big questions, finding a sense of identity and context, and connecting with others — increasingly happens on the internet. How is this changing our understanding of who we are? Join Augsburg University alum and current adjunct professor in Augsburg’s Department of Religion and Philosophy Chris Stedman for a conversation about his new book IRL: Finding Realness, Meaning, and Belonging in Our Digital Lives (out October 20, 2020), what it means to be “real” in the age of Twitter and TikTok, and what we can learn from the novel ways of being and belonging that are emerging online.
The lecture will feature a presentation by Chris Stedman followed by a time of Q & A. This is a free event, open to students, staff and faculty. Registration required at webinar link provided. After registering, participants will receive a link to connect to the event.
Chris Stedman is a Minneapolis-based writer, speaker, teacher, and community organizer. He is the author of IRL: Finding Realness, Meaning, and Belonging in Our Digital Lives (2020) and Faitheist: How an Atheist Found Common Ground with the Religious (2012). Chris has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, and PBS.
Previously the founding director of the Yale Humanist Community and a fellow at Yale University, Chris also served as a humanist chaplain at Harvard University. He currently teaches in the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg and serves as the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities’ 2020-21 visiting lecturer.

The state of Minnesota is sponsoring a pre-Thanksgiving testing at Augsburg University. This is a free saliva test. Results take a few days to arrive. To ensure an accurate test, do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum 30 minutes prior to testing. No insurance needed but, if you have it, bring your insurance card. This testing event is open to everyone, symptoms or no symptoms. Off-campus students also are eligible for the AirPods giveaway.

How is this changing our understanding of who we are? Join Augsburg University alum and current adjunct professor in Augsburg’s Department of Religion and Philosophy Chris Stedman for a conversation about his new book IRL: Finding Realness, Meaning, and Belonging in Our Digital Lives (out October 20, 2020), what it means to be “real” in the age of Twitter and TikTok, and what we can learn from the novel ways of being and belonging that are emerging online.

Chris Stedman is a Minneapolis-based writer, speaker, teacher, and community organizer. Chris has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, and PBS.
Previously the founding director of the Yale Humanist Community and a fellow at Yale University, Chris also served as a humanist chaplain at Harvard University. He currently teaches in the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg and serves as the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities’ 2020-21 visiting lecturer.

Description: This dialogue will consider things that Minnesota teachers should know and be willing and able to do in relationship to the state’s colonial and White supremacist past and present. Participants include Waziyatawin, a historian, activist, and author of numerous books on Dakota history including What Does Justice Look Like? The Struggle for Liberation in Dakota Homeland; and Augsburg University’s William Green, a historian, professor, and former superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools. This conversation is organized by the Racial Justice in Professional Education Task Force. The task force is charged with examining how our college frames racial justice in the preparation of education professionals, as well as with investigating the ways that racial inequities are embedded in our college’s structures, policies, and practices.

Today, especially in the time of social distancing and online learning, more and more people are moving their search for connection and significance into digital space. The work of being human — exploring life’s big questions, finding a sense of identity and context, and connecting with others — increasingly happens on the internet. How is this changing our understanding of who we are? Join Augsburg University alum and current adjunct professor in Augsburg’s Department of Religion and Philosophy Chris Stedman for a conversation about his new book IRL: Finding Realness, Meaning, and Belonging in Our Digital Lives (out October 20, 2020), what it means to be “real” in the age of Twitter and TikTok, and what we can learn from the novel ways of being and belonging that are emerging online.

The lecture will feature a presentation by Chris Stedman followed by a time of Q & A. This is a free event, open to students, staff and faculty. Registration required at webinar link provided. After registering, participants will receive a link to connect to the event.

Chris Stedman is a Minneapolis-based writer, speaker, teacher, and community organizer. He is the author of IRL: Finding Realness, Meaning, and Belonging in Our Digital Lives (2020) and Faitheist: How an Atheist Found Common Ground with the Religious (2012). Chris has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, and PBS.
Previously the founding director of the Yale Humanist Community and a fellow at Yale University, Chris also served as a humanist chaplain at Harvard University. He currently teaches in the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg and serves as the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities’ 2020-21 visiting lecturer.

Success in diversity and inclusion initiatives eludes many organizations. Often leaders make the fatal error of avoiding valuable resistance. In this interactive experience, you’ll explore the positive role resistance plays in the implementation of successful diversity and inclusion initiatives. Transformative leaders who know the probable sequence, sources, and variety of fears unique to diversity and inclusion change initiatives can respond proactively through open engagement.
