Augsburg Native American Film Series and Myron Dewey present Awake: A Dream from Standing Rock on March 29, 2019. The film AWAKE, A Dream from Standing Rock captures the story of Native-led defiance that forever changed the fight for clean water, our environment and the future of our planet.” Myron Dewey ( Newe-Numah/ Paiute-Shoshone from the Walker River Paiute Tribe, Agui Diccutta Band and Temoke Shoshone)–filmmaker, professor, historical trauma trainer and journalist–will present the film, which he worked on, and talk about what has happened since the action and to the water protectors and other Indigenous activists.

Please join us in Oren 111 starting at 11am on Tuesday, 2/26 for an introduction to the university’s new assessment software, Watermark and Aqua. Watermark offers departments new ways to structure, track, and report out on their yearly assessment efforts. Aqua is a flexible cloud-based platform for easily scoring student work. These systems are available now to interested departments, and will be introduced to the full campus over the coming years. Lunch will be served following the talk.

Bio:
Michael Young is an Associate Professor of mathematics at Iowa State University (ISU). His primary research area is Discrete Mathematics, particularly graph theory and combinatorics. Recently, he has had a focus on equity in the mathematics classroom. Most of this work has been through teacher professional development on creating inclusive mathematics learning spaces. He is responsible for establishing the Mathematicians of Color Alliance (MOCA). MOCA consists of the underrepresented graduate and undergraduate mathematics students and was created with the goals of recruiting, retention, and vertical mentoring. In addition, Dr. Young is co-director of ISU’s Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Mathematics.

Abstract: Domination in graphs has been an important and active topic in graph theory for over 40 years. It has immediate applications in visibility and controllability. In this talk we will discuss a generalization of domination called exponential domination. A vertex v in an exponential dominating set assigns weight 21−dist(v,u) to vertex u. An exponential dominating set of a graph G is a subset of V (G) such that every vertex in V (G) has been assigned a sum weight of at least 1. We will specifically look at grid graphs and graphs on the torus.

Many students grow a distaste for mathematics, while others just choose to completely avoid it all together, because of their experiences within the subject. The mathematics classroom is not always an effective place of learning. This is particularly true for women and students of color. This talk will discuss the ideas and research of the ”Designing Equity by Thinking in and about Mathematics” and the NSF INCLUDES ”Building on Strengths” projects and how these projects are disrupting inequities in the mathematics classroom.

The Augsburg Department of Business Administration is sponsoring a presentation by Regent and Alumni Nicholas Gangestad (’86) on Monday, February 25 at 6 pm (in Hagfors 150). Nick is senior vice president and chief financial officer of 3M, an international innovation company with nearly 90,000 employees operating in 70 countries around the world. Gangestad began at 3M in 1987 as a systems analyst; a few years later he became a plant accountant, followed by financial analyst and financial manager. He has worked in a variety of 3M businesses and regions including the Asia Pacific, Canada, Latin America, and United States. In 2011, Gangestad was appointed corporate controller and chief accounting officer. In 2014, he was named senior vice president and CFO. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on accounting from Augsburg, as well as an MBA from the University of Minnesota. Gangestad serves on the board of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. He was elected to the Augsburg Board of Regents in 2016, and is on the board of the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts.

Hello! My name is Elana and I am a certified yoga teacher. I will be offering a free class on Wednesdays from 11-11:45 in the Gundale Chapel in Hagfors. We will practice flowing breath to movement, staying in the present moment, and challenging our bodies through different poses during this 45 minute yoga practice. The yoga will be accessible to any level. Mats will be available if you do not have your own mat. Open to all students, staff, faculty, and any others part of the Augsburg community. The Ethics of Tension: Applications of Buddhist-Postmodern Ethics

Workshop description: This interdisciplinary workshop for faculty and staff is an opportunity to deepen your understanding of Buddhist and postmodern ethics, and to apply this knowledge to your discipline. The workshop will begin with an overview on Buddhist and postmodern ethics that builds on Dr. Park’s Batalden convocation. From there, participants will apply Buddhist-postmodern ethics to case examples in small groups (by discipline). Interdisciplinary discussions will follow. A continental breakfast will be served. (Participants may earn three social work CEUs.)

Tickets will be available to all eligible graduates beginning on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, at 7:00 a.m. Please note that if you attempt to use the ticket request prior to the website being active, you will receive a message indicating you are not eligible for the ceremony. This will change to eligible once the system becomes live.
Student RSVP Ticket:
Each graduate will be issued a Student RSVP ticket for the ceremony. Please print this ticket and bring it with you—this is for YOU to gain access to the stadium on Commencement Day.
Guest Tickets:
For 2019, graduates will not have ticket limits when securing Commencement tickets. However, the ticketing system does have a limit on the number of tickets that can be procured at one time. The total number of tickets allowed per graduate by our ticketing system should be sufficiently high to accommodate the needs of our graduates and their families–but, should you need more than is allowed by the system in one transaction, you can visit the University Events department or email events@augsburg.edu and the additionally required tickets can be allocated manually.
If you and your family will need access to Accessible Seating tickets, you will be able to request up to six tickets with mobility access. Family members requiring wheelchair or mobility seating will be able to have one companion seated with them. Other members of your group will be asked to find seating in the General Admissions areas to ensure our ability to meet the needs of all families.
So that we can have the most accurate number of expected attendees possible, we ask that you take only the number of tickets that you will realistically need for those that will be attending. The ticketing system will remain available to you until Commencement day, so you are free to go back and order additional tickets should your total number needed increase.

Hello! My name is Elana and I am a certified yoga teacher. I will be offering a free class on Wednesdays from 11-11:45 in the Gundale Chapel in Hagfors. We will practice flowing breath to movement, staying in the present moment, and challenging our bodies through different poses during this 45 minute yoga practice. The course begins by reviewing select films of women directors who are gifted at engaging their audience through the expressive moments of the everyday. Following this session, participants learn how to write, direct, and edit a short scene.

The John Engman Writing Prize, a literary competition sponsored by Murphy Square and the Augsburg English Department, is awarded each year to promising writers.
This year’s submission deadline is February 15th, 2019. Judges of the competition will select winners in each of the categories of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction.
To enter, writers must submit at least one of the following:
Short Fiction – One complete short story of not more than 15 pages.
Creative Non-fiction – One complete piece not longer than 15 pages.
Poetry – At least three poems.
All writers must be enrolled at Augsburg University and may enter each of the categories as often as they wish, but they may only win in one. Names of writers must not be on the works submitted.

Mathew Shannon is the Senior Diversity Talent Acquisition Specialist at Medtronic, and will be presenting the workshop “The Interview: Embrace the Invitation” as part of the upcoming Jump Start Your Job Search event this Saturday, February 16. He has an impressive biography (see below) and we look forward to this opportunity to learn from him!
Mr. Mathew Shannon is an established human resource professional. While growing up in Minneapolis, MN, Mathew realized that one of the keys to successful communities is the presence of positive leadership. Having a few key mentors in his life during transitional times was helpful in making important decisions. Mathew led by example as an All-State and All-American student athlete in track and field throughout his high school and college careers. Mr. Shannon has his BA degree in Business and Communication Arts from Augsburg University located in Minneapolis, MN.
Mr. Shannon’s professional investments are currently centered on diversity and inclusion, project management, and talent acquisition. Mathew has a successful background in insurance sales, program management, and leadership/ professional development. His sincere passion for making a difference in the lives of other people is a driving force that creates a positive synergy that Mathew shares with his colleagues and the communities he serves.
Mathew also serves on the alumni board at Augsburg University, and facilitates professional development workshops to help others make their greatest contribution to society. Wellness is an important part of life and Mathew enjoys fitness challenges, photography, and music.

Hello! I will be teaching a free 45 minute lunch yoga class starting tomorrow, Wednesday Feb. 13. It will be from 11-11:45 am in the Racquetball Court (Si-Melby 130). They will continue on Wednesdays throughout the semester, but the time may change. We will practice flowing breath to movement, staying in the present moment, and challenging our bodies through different poses during this 45 minute yoga practice. Mats will be available if you do not have your own mat. Open to all students, staff, faculty, and any others part of the Augsburg community and the yoga will be accessible to any level. Do you have a passion for singing and/or a cappella? Convocadence is Augsburg’s only a cappella co-ed group and are looking for new members who are committed and passionate about music. Rehearsals are on Friday nights from 6-7:30 and Sundays from 4:30-6. We will be holding auditions on Tuesday, February 12th and Wednesday, February 13th from 6-8:30pm. Audition sign up sheets are located in the music building in between the choir and band room. We will be asking you to sing a verse and chorus at most. Hope to see you there!

HabitAware’s Keen smart bracelet “Retrains The Brain.” Keen creates awareness of hair pulling, skin picking and nail biting, debilitating mental health conditions. Having grown up with hair pulling disorder, Aneela is now an outspoken mental health advocate. HabitAware is a HAX hardware accelerator alumnus and recently received an NIH research grant. Her life’s work (HabitAware) has been featured as a TIME Magazine 2018 Best Invention and in BuzzFeed, SELF Magazine, The Washington Post, Prevention Magazine and more.
