Election Day is Tuesday, November 5. Have you made a plan to vote?

There are no classes at Augsburg on Election Day and it’s a holiday for faculty and staff in order to make it easier for our community to vote, volunteer, and take part in the democratic process.

Students: If you live on campus, your polling place is in Christensen Center. If you did not already register to vote, your student ID will work as proof of residence if you are voting on campus OR in the city of Minneapolis, because Augsburg provided a list of students who live on campus or in Minneapolis to the county elections office.

If you have questions about voting or need help, you can call or text the Minnesota Secretary of State call center from 8 a.m.–4 p.m..

Sharing Sad News About Jeanne L. Narum

We recently learned that former Augsburg staff member, Jeanne L. Narum, died on October 23, 2024, at the age of 88. Jeanne served as Vice President for Development at Augsburg from 1985-1988. We extend our sympathies to Jeanne’s family, friends and colleagues.

A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield, Minnesota on May 3, 2025. Memorials may be sent to: The William and Jeanne Narum Fund, St. Olaf College, 1520 St. Olaf Avenue, Northfield, MN 55057.

Mark Your Calendar – Open Enrollment Begins November 11

Open Enrollment, the annual period when benefits-eligible employees make their benefit choices for the coming year, begins Monday, November 11 and continues through Sunday, November 24. This is the only time of year when you may elect or change your benefits, unless you experience a qualifying life event.
All benefits-eligible employees are encouraged to attend open enrollment information sessions. The first session will be held virtually on Thursday, November 7 at 12:00 noon.
The 2025 Benefit Guide will be available by November 4 – watch A-mail for the announcement.

Coming in 2025: Convenient Care Anytime, Anywhere with Kavira!
Starting in 2025, Augsburg is pleased to introduce an additional benefit for our medical plan participants: primary and urgent care services through Kavira, at no extra cost. Kavira offers virtual and in-home visits, providing convenient access to care at little to no cost for those enrolled in our medical plans. Feedback from other Minnesota Private College Council (MPCC) schools has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited to pilot this benefit with the Augsburg community.

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2025 (graduating by May ‘27)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Monday, November 18th, 2024 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Monday, November 25th, 2024 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

On Friday, November 1, we will hold an All Saints service at 10:40 am in Hoversten Chapel. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. In this service we remember loved ones who have died, especially in this past year. We celebrate and remember through song and prayer. Get in the Halloween Spirit: Judge Debates at MNUDL’s Halloween-Themed Tournament

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is seeking volunteers to judge debates this Friday (virtually) or Saturday (in person at Roseville Area High School.)

By judging debate, you’re helping students gain crucial academic skills like argumentation, critical thinking, reading comprehension, public speaking, and more. Plus, it’s a chance for them to gain confidence, collaborate with teammates, and take pride in representing their schools in a fun and competitive setting!

The tournament will have fun Halloween activities like a costume contest, treats, painted bowling pin trophies, and spooky vibes.

No debate experience is required to judge for the MNUDL. We’ll train you!

Advancement Update: Augsburg Fund Allocation Policy Takes Effect November 1

At their fall meeting, the Board of Regents voted to implement a new Augsburg Fund Allocation policy as of November 1, 2024. Under this policy, Augsburg will allocate 5% of all restricted philanthropic gifts to the Augsburg Fund. In practice, this means that 95 cents on the dollar will go to accomplish the specific purpose of the gift. The remaining five cents will support the university as a whole.

It is important to note that this new policy will not apply to any gifts or pledges made before November 1, 2024. Additionally, Augsburg Fund Allocation will not be taken from distributions of existing endowed or restricted current-use funds, regardless of when the funds were established.

While it comprises a small percentage of any individual gift, this incremental allocation to the Augsburg Fund represents a significant investment in Augsburg’s future. Today, a majority of philanthropic gifts to Augsburg are directed toward a specific purpose, like a new scholarship or an athletic team. These activities typically require additional investments that are not funded by the gift itself—things like finance and business operations, fundraising, IT, and human resources. The Augsburg Fund allocation helps to offset these costs while supporting Augsburg’s long-term financial sustainability.

Under this policy, 100% of every gift will continue to benefit Augsburg and will be recognized in full as a charitable contribution for tax purposes. Donors can also continue to give directly to the Augsburg Fund, with no change in how those gifts are allocated. While this allocation practice is new for Augsburg, it mirrors similar policies in place at universities across the country.

Boxes will be placed in five different buildings on our campus from October 9th to October 30th. We are collecting winter clothes for newly arrived immigrant parents and children. The items needed are snow pants, boots, coats, sweaters, gloves, socks, and winter hats. The clothes are for all genders and all ages. Thank you very much for your donations and support.
The boxes will be in the following buildings:
– Christensen Center Lobby (Outside of Stormmen Center)
– Enrollment Center Lobby
– Foss Atrium ( Outside fo the campus ministry offices)
– Oren Gateway Center
-Si Melby Lobby (outside of athletic offices)

Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2025 (graduating by May ‘27)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. Extended Deadline: Spring Break Study Abroad Program in Spain

First-Generation Survey for Augsburg Faculty and Staff

In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day (Nov. 8), the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 4. These events will be geared to students, but all of the Augsburg community is welcome to attend. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

In addition to this programming, we’re asking faculty and staff to complete this brief First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey. The information collected will be used to create ongoing resources and support for first-generation students here at Augsburg. Please provide as much information as you’re comfortable sharing. NOTE: This is the same survey we released last year, so if you already submitted a response, no need to do so again (unless you’d like to update your responses)!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for caring volunteers who can help local high school students improve their argumentation skills as they debate about the implications of AI.

No experience is required! We’ll train you how to run the round, pick the winner fairly, and provide useful feedback for improvement. Judge virtually on upcoming Fridays or in-person in the Twin Cities Metro on upcoming Saturdays.

Plus, thanks to funding from the AmeriCorps Volunteer Generation Fund, we can provide transportation if needed!

Applications Are Now Open for the PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2025 (graduating by May ‘27)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Monday, November 18th, 2024 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Monday, November 25th, 2024 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Winter Clothes Donations Needed

Hello all,
Boxes will be placed in five different buildings on our campus from October 9th to October 30th. We are collecting winter clothes for newly arrived immigrant parents and children. The items needed are snow pants, boots, coats, sweaters, gloves, socks, and winter hats. The clothes are for all genders and all ages. Thank you very much for your donations and support.
The boxes will be in the following buildings:
– Christensen Center Lobby (Outside of Stormmen Center)
– Enrollment Center Lobby
– Foss Atrium ( Outside fo the campus ministry offices)
– Oren Gateway Center
-Si Melby Lobby (outside of athletic offices)

Four preliminary alternative designs have been created for a new bridge. MNDOT is seeking feedback on the alternative designs from users of the bridge. To provide input on design options for the bridge, take a few minutes to complete the online survey found on the MNDOT project page (link below). The online survey closes on October 11.

Advocate for Private College Students Through MAPCS

The Minnesota Association of Private College Students (MAPCS) is a group of civic-minded college students who together represent the public policy and social issues of the students from the 18 member colleges and universities of the Minnesota Private College Council. MAPCS works on advocating for public policy efforts like the Minnesota State Grant at the state capitol.

As part of MAPCS, you will attend monthly meetings and:

– Influence lawmakers
– Engage in digital activism
– Network with local leaders and professionals
– Gain leadership experience
– Explore careers in public policy, law, and politics

The Reell Office of Seeing Things Whole is excited to announce the launch of a new Continuing Education Series, which expands on the Seeing Things Whole framework by empowering participants with the tools and insights needed to tackle challenges, make informed decisions, foster collaboration, and drive meaningful change.

The series consists of five interactive workshops, each aimed at enhancing your ability to mindfully lead through change. The workshops cover the following over five weeks:

First-Generation Survey for Augsburg Faculty and Staff

In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day (Nov. 8), the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 4. These events will be geared to students, but all of the Augsburg community is welcome to attend. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

In addition to this programming, we’re asking faculty and staff to complete this brief First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey. The information collected will be used to create ongoing resources and support for first-generation students here at Augsburg. Please provide as much information as you’re comfortable sharing. NOTE: This is the same survey we released last year, so if you already submitted a response, no need to do so again (unless you’d like to update your responses)!
