The Minneapolis Moment is a one-minute play project attempting to continue dialogue rooted in the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the resulting uprisings in a time of pandemic and divisive federal elections. We’ll borrow the model of the Every 28 Hours Plays to create, select, and perform one-minute plays over Zoom or other video media to share with the Augsburg and Minneapolis communities.

The Minneapolis Moment will engage student, staff, and faculty in order to perform selected one-minute plays from the Every 28 Hours Plays and to write and perform new one-minute plays based on experiences since the murder of George Floyd. The goal is to facilitate critical dialogue and reflection by providing multiple viewpoints and multiple experiences.

The design of the project allows participants to start working in December 2020 and continue into the spring semester of 2021 with three or four performances building on each other and able to be broadcast virtually to be in alignment with essential health measures to protect against the pandemic. The idea is to have three or four performances with several one-minute plays and then ultimately to collect and edit them into one larger video. Participants can be involved in only one writing and performance cycle or in them all—it will be up to them. All Augsburg students, staff, and faculty are welcome to participate.

Check out this Spring topics course on BIPOC film with filmmaker James Curry (https://www.augsburg.edu/faculty/curryja/). The course surveys the history, theories, debates, and controversies that have characterized BIPOC cinema, with an emphasis on the relationship between BIPOC cinema and American culture and politics more broadly. One of the debates within BIPOC film scholarship has centered on the problems of defining the terrain of BIPOC cinema. This course takes a broad view by including films that have been important to the public discourse about BIPOC existence in America, even if those films were not directed by BIPOC directors. Though our primary focus will be on independent film, we also will study a couple of landmark television series featuring BIPOC and put those into dialogue with the history of BIPOC’s in film.

People have a very difficult time wrapping their head around why anybody would want to study genocide. But there are actually several very good reasons to do so and they affect the global community. Although one can certainly make the case that there is a moral reason to study genocide, there are practical reasons as well.
A glaring reason to study genocide is that it is sadly not a crime of the past. Modern genocide began in Southwest Africa and has continued through the Holocaust up until today. Recent genocides include the Rohingya in Myanmar and the Yazidi in Iraq. How many people are even aware that this is still happening? We cannot afford to turn a blind eye to those that still suffer from this most heinous of crimes.
That brings us to the other practical reason to study genocide. Only by studying genocide can we hope to prevent its occurrence in the future. By studying genocide, we will be to see factors that are common among genocides. These so-called risk factors are things that make genocide more likely to occur. If such factors can be identified, an early warning system can be developed.
The study of genocide is critical, not just so that we don’t forget what happened in the past. It certainly is not something that is for the faint of heart. As a social scientist, I truly believe that those of us who study genocide feel called to do so in some way. We must also be able to not only recognize when genocide is occurring, but eventually be able to predict its occurrence. Only in this way can we hope to be rid of the scourge of evil that is genocide.

Augsburg recently expanded our wellness and mental health services to give the Augsburg community access to a free service called TAO. The TAO app includes over 150 brief, effective educational sessions that include videos and interactive worksheets, that can be accessed 24/7 on your computer or smartphone. Units include “Let Go and Be Well”, “Calming Your Anxiety, “Leave Your Blues Behind” and “Improving Your Mood”, “Interpersonal Relationships and Communication”, and “Evaluating My Alcohol and Drug Use”.

Ready to change the world? Apply for the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship, a full scholarship to study in Ireland in late summer 2021 with a cohort of student leaders from around the country!

The Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship was founded to empower students of color with a transformative experience abroad, much like Frederick Douglass was inspired by his travels. This year’s cohort is co-sponsored by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Douglass’s four-month journey around Ireland.

You’ll be based in Dublin and visit other cities where Douglass campaigned, while meeting with government leaders and social justice activists. Special emphasis on leadership, social justice, agitation for positive change and cross-cultural understanding – so critical in 2020 of all years!

This opportunity is offered by CIEE, a study abroad organization that Augsburg partners with. All program fees are covered and airfare is COVERED – you only pay for your passport (if you need one) and a few meals.

All eligible students who submit an application also qualify for a $1,500 scholarship towards any CIEE summer program! You don’t have to win the fellowship to qualify for this funding!!

According to the CDC, if you receive a negative result from a COVID-19 test result, you should continue to take precautions against COVID-19, including washing your hands often, keeping 6 feet of distance between yourself and those you do not live with, and wearing a mask in public.

If you were in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19, you need to stay home for 14 days after your last contact with that person, even if your test result is negative, the Minnesota Department of Health states. This is to avoid exposing others if your test result was a false negative. If you develop symptoms after your negative test result, you will need to get tested again.

Augsburg recently expanded our wellness and mental health services to give the Augsburg community access to a free service called TAO. The TAO app includes over 150 brief, effective educational sessions that include videos and interactive worksheets, that can be accessed 24/7 on your computer or smartphone. One of the learning units focuses on skills for coping with anxiety: “Calming Your Anxiety” (choose student focus).

We’ve been seeing more notifications in Gmail that a “message was not sent to Spam based on your organization’s settings.”

This is likely due to either the overall Gmail spam filter or your personal spam filter becoming more aggressive based on what its learning.

We have configured Augsburg’s Gmail to not flag messages between Augsburg people as spam. So Gmail thinks the message may look like spam but we’ve told Gmail that email between Auggies is not spam.

The spam ecosystem is constantly changing and the Gmail spam filter is constantly learning as spam changes. These changes are normal and we always monitoring for ways we can make the email experience better.

Transgender Visibility Week is hard on us all, especially our LGBTQIA+ kin.  2020 has proved to be no different.  LGBTQIA+ people live and navigate pandemics their entire lives – the notion of existence is a resilient act for many LGBTQIA+ communities. 

As we seek to move on from 2020, the heartache and lived realities for queer and trans+ people will continue on.  “2020 has been the most violent year on record (since official tracking began in 2013) with at least 34 transgender or gender non-conforming people fatally shot or killed by other violent means, the vast majority of which were Black and Latinx transgender women. (All too often these stories go unreported — or misreported.) Statistically 91% of the 22 deaths in the U.S. last year were Black trans women, 81% were under the age of 30” (Rae Senarighi, 20).
This year, and always – we ask that fellow LGBTQIA+ communities, but especially, cisgender and straight communities learn to celebrate trans+ and gender non-conforming communities while we are alive!  Specifically, ask yourself – what am I doing to dismantle systems of transphobia and white supremacy? 
While we cant provide those answers – nor should it be the responsibility of trans+ communities – we can provide resources to take those steps – to put words into action!

The Minneapolis Moment is a one-minute play project attempting to continue dialogue rooted in the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the resulting uprisings in a time of pandemic and divisive federal elections. We’ll borrow the model of the Every 28 Hours Plays to create, select, and perform one-minute plays over Zoom or other video media to share with the Augsburg and Minneapolis communities.

The Minneapolis Moment will engage student, staff, and faculty in order to perform selected one-minute plays from the Every 28 Hours Plays and to write and perform new one-minute plays based on experiences since the murder of George Floyd. The goal is to facilitate critical dialogue and reflection by providing multiple viewpoints and multiple experiences.

The design of the project allows participants to start working in December 2020 and continue into the spring semester of 2021 with three or four performances building on each other and able to be broadcast virtually to be in alignment with essential health measures to protect against the pandemic. The idea is to have three or four performances with several one-minute plays and then ultimately to collect and edit them into one larger video. Participants can be involved in only one writing and performance cycle or in them all—it will be up to them. All Augsburg students, staff, and faculty will be welcome to participate.

Multicultural & LGBTQIA+ Student Services is pleased to announce that the Director , Latinx Student Services has been named.

Mayra Medina Macias ’14 comes to Augsburg from The College Place-Minnesota. She was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico and has a passion for working with diverse, low-income, first-generation, and immigrant students. Mayra has devoted her professional career in roles centered on equity, inclusion, and access, and has five years of experience helping students pursue higher education. Mayra graduated from Augsburg University in 2014 with a degree in communication studies, film production, and studio art. She also holds a Masters in Organizational Leadership from the University of Northwestern–St. Paul. In her free time, Mayra enjoys spending time with her family, making art, and keeping her eight-year-old puggle busy.

This fall Augsburg has received a grant from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER) to provide technology resources to students and faculty in need with a particular focus on “students and faculty who are indigenous or people of color; low-income; or disabled. A broader target population is all students and faculty at Augsburg University.”

Augsburg employees enrolled in either the Health Partners Open Access or Achieve Network medical plans will continue to have their cost-share waived for the treatment of COVID-19 – including copays, coinsurance and deductibles – when getting care from an in-network provider, effective through March 31, 2021.

The following information from HealthPartners was distributed to employers yesterday:

This cost-sharing waiver is for all treatments for COVID-19, both outpatient and inpatient. If someone is hospitalized for treatment of COVID-19, the member’s cost-sharing for that treatment will be waived. Any incidentals, including pharmacy and testing, associated with an inpatient stay are covered under the hospitalization stay. There are currently no outpatient prescription treatments for COVID-19, so waiving cost share does not apply. Medical policies for any new or investigational treatments will apply.

This policy will remain in effect through March 31, 2021. If a member is inpatient on March 31, 2021, we will continue coverage until they are discharged.
