Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.
In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Christensen and Interfaith Scholars – Current sophomores and juniors who plan to study on campus all of the 2021-22 academic year.

Augsburg University is partnering with the University of MN to administer the 2021 College Student Health Survey which will be sent via email this week to Augsburg student email addresses. This survey will be asking for information on a variety of college student health topics. We hope you will take the time to complete the survey and do so by March 26th. Those participating in doing the survey will be entered into a drawing for Amazon gift cards – First place $1000, 2nd place $500, 3rd place $250 and 5 fourth place gift cards of $50 each. Thirteen universities are participating and one student from each school will win a $100 Amazon gift card. We want your input so please participate in the 2021 College Student Health Survey.

Beginning TODAY Tuesday, February 16, MNsure is opening a three-month special enrollment period to help Minnesotans get comprehensive health insurance coverage. It will run through May 17.
Eligible Minnesotans can also take advantage of cost-saving benefits available only through MNsure.
Who is it for? Any Minnesotan not currently enrolled through MNsure. This includes those who are uninsured or have insurance outside of MNsure.

This fall Augsburg has received a grant from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER) to provide technology resources to students and faculty in need with a particular focus on “students and faculty who are indigenous or people of color; low-income; or disabled. A broader target population is all students and faculty at Augsburg University.”
Students can just come to the library and check out the items as priority has already been given to the grant focus population.

Share your suggestions for the next Batalden Convocation speaker for Spring 2022.
Each year (with the exception of last March 2020 due to the pandemic), the Batalden Program in Applied Ethics hosts a “Batalden convocation.” Historically, this has been a one-hour talk held in the chapel. Since the academic year 2018-2019, a “Batalden Visiting Scholar” approach has been taken; this allows the “Batalden Visiting Scholar” to both visit classes and with students on the same day as the convocation and, in some cases, the following day. Previous Batalden Visiting Scholars have included Professor Jin Park (Buddhist scholar), Professor Frederic Reamer (ethicist), and Professor Kwame Anthony Appiah (ethicist).
For the current Batalden Scholar in Applied Ethics (Bibiana Koh) the overarching objective of the program is to promote broad conversations in interfaith, intersectional, or interdisciplinary applied ethics that promote social justice and social change across the Augsburg University campus and the community at large. The program defines applied ethics as work that focuses on, considers, and/or addresses public and/or private moral issues. The Batalden Ethics program is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.
In hope and anticipation of a pandemic-free year, planning for the Spring 2022 convocation begins now. For the Fall 2021 undergraduate registration period we are eliminating the crossover registration waiting period on a trial basis. Registration for AU students into Day classes and Day students into AU classes will be available as soon as a student is eligible to register. A decision about crossover registration in future semesters will be made after we see how this trial impacts Day and AU student access to courses in their home programs.

Are you interested in abolition democracy?
If so, perhaps you would like to join a student committee that is planning an April 2021 panel event, “Abolition Democracy as our Moral Compass: A “Radical Imaginary” This event would be generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.
Critical race theorist and abolition scholar Stovall (2018) invites us into “a radical imaginary” that “challenges us to think about the world as it is while committing to a process that systemically changes it” (p. 53). Students who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) in traditionally White institutions (TWIs) must navigate a covert White supremacist infrastructure (Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence, 2005) and a White milieu in higher education (for example, “White talk moves,” see Finders & Kwame-Ross, 2020). This proposed panel seeks to imagine higher education in the context of abolition democracy (DuBois, 1998; Davis, 2005).
This panel discussion will feature Professor David Stovall and additional student selected panelists. The event will be shaped and organized with Augsburg students under the guidance of the Batalden Scholar in Applied Ethics, Prof. Bibiana Koh. Students who serve on the committee will receive some kind of recognition for their time.

The Critical Race & Ethnic Studies Scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need with preference given to students engaged in coursework or majoring in Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies as the vision for this new department is realized.
Critical Race & Ethnic Studies
The department has been in construction since 1968 and was supported by President Pribbenow on June 2020, in the wake of George Floyd’s murder by the Minneapolis police department.
The desire in the creation of the CRES Department will Include
1) a major and minor in CRES with concentrations in Africana Studies; Latine/x Studies; and Asian-American Studies
2) 5 tenure faculty total, with 3 immediate tenure-track faculty in the Fall 2021 and two more in the following years; and
3) actively center the interdisciplinary scholarship rooted in the practices, philosophies, and methods of ethnic studies.
This scholarship was created by a generous donor and in collaboration with a group of students and PASU (Pan-Afrikan Student Union) raising money to create more accessible scholarships.

Share your suggestions for the next Batalden Convocation speaker for Spring 2022.
Each year (with the exception of last March 2020 due to the pandemic), the Batalden Program in Applied Ethics hosts a “Batalden convocation.” Historically, this has been a one-hour talk held in the chapel. Since the academic year 2018-2019, a “Batalden Visiting Scholar” approach has been taken; this allows the “Batalden Visiting Scholar” to both visit classes and with students on the same day as the convocation and, in some cases, the following day. Previous Batalden Visiting Scholars have included Professor Jin Park (Buddhist scholar), Professor Frederic Reamer (ethicist), and Professor Kwame Anthony Appiah (ethicist).
For the current Batalden Scholar in Applied Ethics (Bibiana Koh) the overarching objective of the program is to promote broad conversations in interfaith, intersectional, or interdisciplinary applied ethics that promote social justice and social change across the Augsburg University campus and the community at large. The program defines applied ethics as work that focuses on, considers, and/or addresses public and/or private moral issues. The Batalden Ethics program is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.
In hope and anticipation of a pandemic-free year, planning for the Spring 2022 convocation begins now. The Critical Race & Ethnic Studies Scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need with preference given to students engaged in coursework or majoring in Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies as the vision for this new department is realized.
Critical Race & Ethnic Studies
The department has been in construction since 1968 and was supported by President Pribbenow on June 2020, in the wake of George Floyd’s murder by the Minneapolis police department.
The desire in the creation of the CRES Department will Include
1) a major and minor in CRES with concentrations in Africana Studies; Latine/x Studies; and Asian-American Studies
2) 5 tenure faculty total, with 3 immediate tenure-track faculty in the Fall 2021 and two more in the following years; and
3) actively center the interdisciplinary scholarship rooted in the practices, philosophies, and methods of ethnic studies.
This scholarship was created by a generous donor and in collaboration with a group of students and PASU (Pan-Afrikan Student Union) raising money to create more accessible scholarships.

WHO CAN APPLY:
-Must have completed at least one full semester at Augsburg
-Be enrolled as a full-time student in the Augsburg Day program for the academic year 2021-2022

The Batalden Scholar in Applied Ethics program is pleased to announce that there is funding available to Augsburg faculty who wish to mentor undergraduate research assistants to support student or faculty research in applied ethics. Funding for this RA program is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.
Eligibility: Currently enrolled undergraduate Augsburg student with a strong interest in applied ethics research.
Stipend: Mirroring URGO, the selected undergraduate research assistants will receive a $500 stipend at the end of the Spring 2021 semester.
Award reporting: All students who are awarded a Batalden RA position will be required to attend a May 2021 virtual event to briefly report on the impact of their research assistantship. Faculty working with their RA are strongly encouraged to attend as well.

Students should submit their letter of interest and resume directly to the faculty member they would like to work with prior to faculty completing the Google Form application. The editor of our “Features” section is responsible for curating and editing articles that provide in-depth news stories on areas of interest to the Augsburg community. Some examples of Features content include stories that highlight specific individuals or resources on campus, interviews, column pieces from interesting people, or an interactive horoscope game. Features is also often a home for art pieces and poems. A bullet-point list of this position’s responsibilities are below:
– Curate, edit, and write articles that provide in depth news and human interest stories on areas of interest to the Augsburg community.
– Be knowledgable of various students, staff, faculty and resources at Augsburg.
– Plan photos in coordination with Photo Editor.
– Own an interest in journalism, narrative and empowering student voices.
– Be part of a welcoming and supporting team.
This position is paid $60 per newspaper issue (we release 10 issues every semester) and works 6 hours a week.
