Fellowship in the MINNE program this year offers a unique opportunity to engage fully in the course of study offered by the JCRC Holocaust education zoom webinars. We are offering a $200 stipend which will be awarded upon successful completion of all program requirements.
Because of the limited number of spaces available, we wish to ensure that those who are accepted into the program are able to make the most of the experience. The primary criteria for admission to the program are demonstration of interest in the offerings of the program and commitment to furthering your education about the Holocaust.

It’s hard to ignore our emotional, psychological, and social well-being today when it’s being inundated with MAJOR stressors that affect how we think, feel, and act. Please join CTL fellows and other faculty/staff for a discussion of mental health, especially related to communities of color. We will be facilitating a discussion on NAMI Minnesota’s Wellness in Color podcasts. All faculty members and teaching staff are invited to gather and share their experiences with teaching, learning, and advising in this strange new world. – we’ll trade ideas, advice, highs, lows, successes, and failures – or maybe we’ll just plain old vent. Most importantly, we will attempt to inoculate ourselves against one of the more insidious side effects of this pandemic – isolation. A Few Days Left, a Few Spots Left for Upcoming Mississippi Expedition

Challenge yourself, take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and gain valuable real-world skills for navigating the complexities of the 21st Century. This coming September, the next group of students, faculty, and staff will embark from Lake Itasca to begin their hundred-day expedition by canoe and van down the length of the Mississippi River. Students take courses in environmental justice, climate change, politics in the American heartland, outdoor leadership, and undertake individual research projects. In addition to spending time in St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans, the group paddles and camps in the “Wild Miles” on the Lower Mississippi, the heavily industrialized “Chemical Corridor,” and finishes by paddling to the Gulf of Mexico, 2,345 river miles from the headwaters. Students interested in joining the program are invited to apply through the Augsburg Study Away web portal. Deadline for applying is March 15.

Augsburg’s Environmental Justice and Social Change Course Highlighted in SWK Advocates Magazine

Christina L. Erickson, Ph.D., LISW was highlighted in the most recent edition of SWK Advocates magazines by NASW. See the story on Climate Change beginning on page 17 of the magazine. One of the courses Christina Erickson teaches is “Environmental Justice and Social Change,”which she said examines the relationship between environmental justice issues and the principles and methods of social change. It also explores the relationship between environmental damage and damage to human populations, the differential effect of environmental damage on specific populations, and the ways social change agents can mobilize action to correct these injustices, said Erickson, a professor and director of the BSW program at Augsburg University in Minneapolis.

Join Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright for a demonstration of how she *just* learned to add subtitles to her own Zoom teaching videos in a way that takes advantage of Zoom’s new “live transcribe” setting — even when she says things like “activation-induced cytidine deaminase”. This year, EDTalks will be pre-recorded and have a community “premiere” on Zoom hosted by CTL at 3:10 pm on days when there is a faculty meeting. These premieres will end no later than 3:30pm to allow plenty of time to log into the Faculty Zoom meeting early. After the premier, the recording will be posted on the CTL website, along with any resources (if applicable). The Zoom information is linked below (can only be viewed with an Augsburg login).

Teaching Tip Tuesday: Guidelines for Adopting Publisher Content

CTL is focusing on accessibility for March! Although we are all committed to ensuring our teaching is accessible for all students, it’s often hard to know exactly what we need to be on the lookout for. One basic area that’s often overlooked is whether or not the textbook and/or web resources you require for your class meet basic accessibility requirements (publishers, unlike Augsburg, are not required to meet federal ADA guidelines). How can you find that out? Well, that’s the tricky part!
To help Augsburg faculty make decisions about required materials for their courses, the IT Accessibility Committee is drafting some Guidelines for Adopting Publisher Content to help you ask the right questions of your publisher representatives! Although this is still a work-in-progress as a process is developed, the information here can be used RIGHT NOW as you are selecting your content for next semester and submitting that information to the bookstore.

Distinguished Contribution in Teaching – Outstanding teaching encompasses many forms and pedagogies, and is not restricted to the classroom. As such, nominations made in this category should demonstrate the nominee’s active engagement with students, creative approaches to instruction, ability to challenge students, and overall passion for teaching. Up to two awards may be given in this category, one for full-time faculty and one for adjunct faculty (2 courses per term or less).
Distinguished Contribution in Service – Nominations for this award should demonstrate the nominee’s impact on the university, community, or discipline in a substantial and meaningful way. Nominees who impact the lives of students through supportive, thoughtful, and comprehensive mentoring and advising that go beyond the normal expectations of guiding students are eligible for this award.
Distinguished Contribution in Scholarship – Nominees in this category may be recognized for a consistent record of scholarship or a single project. In recognizing multiple forms of intellectual inquiry, nominations should speak directly to both the quality of scholarship as well as its contribution to their discipline, the university, or community.

The March EDTalk premieres Wednesday, March 10 at 3:10 pm.: “Making Your Teaching More Accessible: Easy Captioning of Your Zoom Videos and Recordings”
CTL is focusing on accessibility for March! Join Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright for a demonstration of how she *just* learned to add subtitles to her own Zoom teaching videos in a way that takes advantage of Zoom’s new “live transcribe” setting — even when she says things like “activation-induced cytidine deaminase”.
This year, EDTalks will be pre-recorded and have a community “premiere” on Zoom hosted by CTL at 3:10 pm on days when there is a faculty meeting. These premieres will end no later than 3:30pm to allow plenty of time to log into the Faculty Zoom meeting early. After the premier, the recording will be posted on the CTL website, along with any resources (if applicable).

On Monday, March 1, AAC approved the following proposals:
*BUS 362 and BUS 465 made changes to prerequisites.
*HIS 355 updated its title and description. The new course title is: “In the Aftermath of War: History, Memory and Transitional Justice in Central America”.
*A new Augsburg Experience was brought by CGEE and the Pan Afrikan Center.
*There were revisions made to the Chemistry Department Honors’ requirements.
*CSC 210 made changes to its prerequisites.
Two additional proposals were discussed, but the committee decided to await votes due to some remaining questions/concerns.
The committee was also updated on the TEL subcommittee’s intentions to pursue status as a standing committee.

In their recently published article on Inside Higher Ed, former chair and professor of Education, Margaret Finders, and Joaquin Muñoz, assistant professor in American Indian Studies, examine the critical equity considerations for instructors with respect to camera policies. They analyze how requiring students to let you inside their homes and private spaces can be culturally insensitive and ultimately racist, sexist, gendered and classist.

Please join our Spring 2021 Batalden Book Club to read “We Want to do More Than Survive” (by Bettina Love). This Zoom book club is open to students, faculty, and staff.
Twenty books are available for pick up in Memorial Hall. Please contact Bibiana Koh at koh@augsburg.edu to reserve a spot, arrange to pick up your book, and select a book club date (please include your preferred time in your email).
Here are the two book club times offered (You will only attend one):
• Book group #1: Friday, March 26th: 3-5pm
• Book group #2: Monday March 29th, 4-6pm

Augsburg Student Day Government (ASDG) and the Batalden Applied Ethics program will co-sponsor “Abolition Praxis as a Moral Compass: A “Radical Imaginary” Panel Discussion
on Wednesday, April 7th, from 4-6pm. This co-sponsored panel event will feature David Stovall (Professor of Criminology, Law and Justice at the University of Illinois, Chicago) in addition to students and/or community members.

All faculty or full-time staff who have been employed at the university for at least three years are eligible for the awards.
Nominations are due Monday, March 22.
Distinguished Contribution in Teaching – Up to two awards may be given in this category, one for full-time faculty and one for adjunct faculty (2 courses per term or less).

Fall River Semester Program Application Deadline Approaching

Challenge yourself, take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and gain valuable real-world skills for navigating the complexities of the 21st Century. This coming September, the next group of students, faculty, and staff will embark from Lake Itasca to begin their hundred-day expedition by canoe and van down the length of the Mississippi River. Students take courses in environmental justice, climate change, politics in the American heartland, outdoor leadership, and undertake individual research projects. In addition to spending time in St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans, the group paddles and camps in the “Wild Miles” on the Lower Mississippi, the heavily industrialized “Chemical Corridor,” and finishes by paddling to the Gulf of Mexico, 2,345 river miles from the headwaters. Students interested in joining the program are invited to apply through the Augsburg Study Away web portal. Deadline for applying is March 15.

All faculty members and teaching staff are invited to gather and share their experiences with teaching, learning, and advising in this strange new world. – we’ll trade ideas, advice, highs, lows, successes, and failures – or maybe we’ll just plain old vent. Most importantly, we will attempt to inoculate ourselves against one of the more insidious side effects of this pandemic – isolation. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, or pour a glass of wine, and Zoom in to support your fellow instructors and work through this challenging time together.
