Last week AAC approved a Social Work proposal to eliminate two courses from their major: SWK 230 Global Peace and Social Development and SWK 240 Intergroup Dialogue.

The committee also approved a proposal from Sociology to change the name of SOC 266 from “Sociology of Sexualities” to “Sociology of Love, Intimacy, and Sexuality”.

All faculty members and teaching staff are invited to gather and share their experiences with teaching, learning, and advising in this strange new world. – we’ll trade ideas, advice, highs, lows, successes, and failures – or maybe we’ll just plain old vent. Most importantly, we will attempt to inoculate ourselves against one of the more insidious side effects of this pandemic – isolation. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, or pour a glass of wine, and Zoom in to support your fellow instructors and work through this challenging time together.

Augsburg University’s students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit a Batalden grant proposal to support leadership in applied ethics on campus and/or in the community. This grant program defines applied ethics as work that focuses on, considers, and/or addresses public and/or private moral issues. The overarching objective of these grants is to promote broad conversations in interfaith, intersectional, and/or interdisciplinary applied ethics that promote social justice and social change. Grant funding for all proposals is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.

Grant proposals may be submitted in interfaith ethics, intersectional ethics, and/or interdisciplinary ethics. Priority deadline is October 15, 2020 (before midnight). How much are the dues?
There is an income-based sliding scale. Considering the median salaries at Augsburg for tenured and non-tenured faculty the yearly dues are most likely between $66-134. You can do a one-time yearly payment or pay in monthly installments ($5.50-$11.17).

Qualtrics has informed us that they’re retiring the Classic Reports in favor of the new Advanced Reports. Below is what they have said:

Over the last 24 months, we’ve been working hard to develop an improved and modern reporting experience. The new and improved Advanced Reports experience is now available to all of our customers and offers a number of benefits including: a new simplified user experience, better application performance and increased stability in report generation. After October 31st, 2020, you will lose access to any reports which were created with Classic Reports, including scheduled emails and public reports. To view Classic Reports in a user account, navigate to the Advanced Reports page (Reports tab > Reports section), click on the name of the advanced report and select View Classic Reports from the dropdown.

These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 14th.

We are limiting the number of student researchers supported during the 20-21 academic year to 12 students and funding will be determined by a first-come, first-serve basis. Faculty from any discipline who need assistance with their research from a student are invited to participate in the pilot. An individual faculty member may propose only one student position who will work 5-20 hours per week and no more than their federal work-study allotment. During the 20-21 academic year, the research projects must follow Augsburg’s guidelines regarding Covid-19.

Please note that the student eligibility for federal work-study and the total number of hours must be confirmed by Human Resources after you complete this form. Open until all 12 positions are filled.

If the student will work 100 hours or less total, we recommend applying instead for the URGO Academic Year research grant.

Please join me in congratulating Taiwana Shambley who has been selected as the first recipient of the Batalden Student Scholar in Applied Ethics fellowship for 2020-21. This merit-based fellowship provides an Augsburg student with an opportunity to support their scholarly interests in applied ethics. Toward this end, Taiwana will receive a $3,000 stipend over the course of the academic year. Taiwana will work with the Batalden Faculty Scholar in Applied Ethics to pursue her interest in abolition theory, decolonization, and communism in the context of postsecondary education. This fellowship position is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.

In an effort to drive student engagement, especially in our current environment of being more distanced than ever, the “Augsburg Connect” virtual portal has been launched. This portal will be the landing page when you enter Moodle, with the intentional purpose of connecting students to each other, to virtual events, and to student support resources.

Courses within Moodle are still accessible in the same way as before. Clicking the “Moodle” link in the navigation menu takes you to the Dashboard that you are familiar with. Alternatively, the “My Courses” dropdown navigation menu gives you access to your individual courses.

We are excited for the opportunities this portal presents and look forward to a great school year!

These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 14th.

We will not be renewing our subscription to hoonuit (formerly Atomic Learning) which provides online short tutorial videos on many topics including software like Microsoft products. Over the past 2 years usage has declined greatly and Augsburg is not getting enough value from the subscription. Based on current analytics this impact is minimal due to low usage. There’s an abundance of free tutorial videos online now easily found through searching.

Qualtrics has informed us that they’re retiring the Classic Reports in favor of the new Advanced Reports. Below is what they have said:

COURSE PURPOSE: Black Minds Matter is a public series that is designed to raise the national consciousness about issues facing Black students in education. The series intentionally addresses the pervasive undervaluing and criminalization of Black minds. Tangible solutions for promoting the learning, development, and success of Black students are offered.

-Identify how assumptions of criminality about Black students are manifested in school, college, and university settings.
-Recognize how socially constructed viewpoints of Black intelligence decenter them as learners in educational institutions.
-Embrace asset-based views of Black students rooted in the concepts of equity-mindedness and institutional responsibility.
-Articulate research-based policies and practices that serve to promote the learning, development, and success of Black students throughout the educational pipeline.

This session will focus on the special challenges that parents — both instructors and students — are facing during this Time of Covid and remote instruction/learning. This session will be more of a facilitated forum to allow faculty to raise concerns and/or share solutions about remote instruction and learning with children at home.

Please join CTL Director Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright and guests for the Practical Pedagogy Series every Wednesday from 10-11am. Designed to complement the Tech Tune-Ups and Tips series and Fellowship Fridays, the Practical Pedagogy series will focus on helping you maintain and/or improve your current pedagogical practices using your preferred Emergency Remote Instruction (ERI, aka Augsburg’s “Hybrid”) option: LIve Remote, Blended, or Parallel. All sessions will be recorded and posted on the Augsburg CTL website, and weekly topics will be posted in A-mail. We look forward to seeing you!
