The overarching objective of these grants is to promote broad conversations in interfaith, intersectional, and/or interdisciplinary applied ethics that promote social justice and social change. Grant funding for all proposals is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.

Grant proposals may be submitted in interfaith ethics, intersectional ethics, and/or interdisciplinary ethics. Priority deadline is October 15, 2020 (before midnight). Please email Batalden Faculty Scholar in Applied Ethics, Prof. Bibiana Koh (koh@augsburg.edu), to receive a copy of the full “call for proposals” with more specific information including eligibility and proposal format, and submission.

Faculty: Join the American Associations for University Professors

submitted by narvaezb@augsburg.edu

To join AAUP or renew got to: http://www.aaup.org/membership/join . To know more, keep reading! In order to be in our mailing list, email Nancy Fischer (secretary): fischern@augsburg.edu

What is AAUP?
Founded in 1915, the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is national nonprofit advocacy association of faculty and other academic professionals. It emphasizes shared governance, academic freedom, and works to amplify faculty voices. For more information go to http://www.aaup.org

Is there an Augsburg chapter?
Since 1966, Augsburg AAUP chapter has worked to advance AAUP’s mission to ensure strong faculty participation in shared governance. To read more about Augsburg AAUP chapter’s advancements go to:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/11k-jVsbOpyoB1rzOVt_-R2toTvkQbclI/view?usp=sharing

Why join now?
AAUP amplifies your voice and advocates for you! Currently we are concern about:
-Continued erosion of faculty presence and authority in governance of our academic program;
-Cancellation of curricular programs without robust faculty oversight;
-Changes in compensation and workloads
-Potential contractual and copyright implications of long-term online-only instruction (beyond emergency remote teaching and learning);
-Full participation in institutional decision-making regarding budget cuts and salary cuts;
-Assuring restoration of current faculty salaries, benefits and status when the current crisis abates

How much are the dues?
There is an income-based sliding scale. Considering the median salaries at Augsburg for tenured and non-tenured faculty the yearly dues are most likely between $66-134. You can do a one-time yearly payment or pay in monthly installments ($5.50-$11.17).

New member’s discount
The Minnesota AAUP chapter reimburses half of the AAUP membership fees for first-time members. Please, email your receipt for AAUP membership dues along with a mailing address to MN-AAUP secretary Katharine Bjork at: ksbjork@hamlline.edu

URGO Federal Work-Study Research Pilot Program

submitted by tengwalm@augsburg.edu

This is a pilot program supporting undergraduate research students through federal work-study funds. We are limiting the number of student researchers supported during the 20-21 academic year to 12 students and funding will be determined by a first-come, first-serve basis. Faculty from any discipline who need assistance with their research from a student are invited to participate in the pilot. An individual faculty member may propose only one student position who will work 5-20 hours per week and no more than their federal work-study allotment. During the 20-21 academic year, the research projects must follow Augsburg’s guidelines regarding Covid-19.

Please note that the student eligibility for federal work-study and the total number of hours must be confirmed by Human Resources after you complete this form. Open until all 12 positions are filled.

If the student will work 100 hours or less total, we recommend applying instead for the URGO Academic Year research grant.

Fridays | “Fellowship Fridays” | 2 pm – 3 pm, ZOOM

CTL is joining Bridget Robinson-Riegler, Psychology Professor and member of Faculty Senate, to bring you Fellowship Fridays support sessions. All faculty members and teaching staff are invited to gather and share their experiences with teaching, learning, and advising in this strange new world. – we’ll trade ideas, advice, highs, lows, successes, and failures – or maybe we’ll just plain old vent. Most importantly, we will attempt to inoculate ourselves against one of the more insidious side effects of this pandemic – isolation. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, or pour a glass of wine, and Zoom in to support your fellow instructors and work through this challenging time together.

Free Course: Black Minds Matter

submitted by maherk@augsburg.edu

COURSE PURPOSE: Black Minds Matter is a public series that is designed to raise the national consciousness about issues facing Black students in education. The series intentionally addresses the pervasive undervaluing and criminalization of Black minds. Tangible solutions for promoting the learning, development, and success of Black students are offered.

-Identify how assumptions of criminality about Black students are manifested in school, college, and university settings.
-Recognize how socially constructed viewpoints of Black intelligence decenter them as learners in educational institutions.
-Embrace asset-based views of Black students rooted in the concepts of equity-mindedness and institutional responsibility.
-Articulate research-based policies and practices that serve to promote the learning, development, and success of Black students throughout the educational pipeline.
