Faculty Zoom Workshop

submitted by mattingl@augsburg.edu

Wednesday, August 29 from 3:30 – 4:30 PM in Hagfors 250

Technology offers new modes of teaching, such as Interactive Video Conferencing (IVC). This workshop will prepare you to use Zoom in a classroom, to think through the lens of the camera, and how to manage group work when some students are connecting virtually.

Staff are welcome to attend as space allows. This workshop will be “Zoomed” for those needing to attend remotely. It will also be recorded. Please contact Christy Mattingly for the link.

URGO Academic-Year Research Application Available

submitted by obrienk@augsburg.edu

Each year URGO offers $1,000 research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “on-campus research” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 10th.

If you have any questions about undergraduate research opportunities, please contact Kirsten O’Brien at obrienk@augsburg.edu or x1446.

Learn What’s New in Moodle

submitted by tensen@augsburg.edu

In response to requests from faculty, this year’s Moodle is more visually appealing and user-friendly than ever before, featuring drop-down menus and a “drawer” that streamlines navigation, search tools that let you quickly access courses and isolate student forum posts, and integrated audio/video recording options. It also includes a variety of pre-formatted templates that let you quickly customize your course with a variety of formats, styles, and fonts. Moodle 2018-19 isn’t your grandfather’s Moodle! (Adjunct instructors who attend this event are eligible for a $50 stipend.)

URGO Conference Travel Grants Available for Student Researchers

submitted by obrienk@augsburg.edu

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications September 10th.

If you have any questions about undergraduate conference travel opportunities, please contact Kirsten O’Brien at obrienk@augsburg.edu or x1446.

General Announcements

On-campus Student Employment Jobs now in Handshake

submitted by tilton@augsburg.edu

Augsburg University Human Resources and the Strommen Career & Internship Services are pleased to announce that starting this fall, students will find all on-campus student positions posted through Handshake. Handshake was implemented July 2017 and is a platform for students to schedule career coaching appointments, register for events and fairs, search for jobs and internships off campus, and now find all on-campus student employment.

Human Resources will still be the main contact for student employment. Departments will continue to create requisitions, hire forms, student paperwork, etc. through Human Resources and Interview Exchange/Hirezon. You will still view applicants through Interview Exchange/Hirezon. This process has not changed.

What has changed is the link of how students find on-campus student jobs.

1. Log into: Inside Augsburg
2. Click On-Campus Student Jobs
3. First time users of Handshake will be asked to activate their account (this takes 90 seconds).
4. Select the On-campus box under Jobs tab, click search
5. Apply to jobs!

The Strommen Center would like to encourage staff and faculty when working with students to find employment opportunities, to have the student log into Handshake.

If staff or faculty would like a student account, so you can see what a student sees, please email careers@augsburg.edu and we will create an account for you.
