Apply for a NASA Space Grant Scholarship

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2022 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students
whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship
program.
2. Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students
who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship
program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
– are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics,
computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
– can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
– show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission.

Staff Appreciation: Nominate a Colleague Before January 24, 2022

This year Augsburg Staff Senate will host an in-person Staff Appreciation Event on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. in the Hoversten Chapel, Foss Hall.

Nominations for the Outstanding Staff and Newcomer Awards are due no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 24, 2022. Nominations are welcomed from any current member of the campus community – staff, faculty, or students.

The Staff Appreciation Program is intended to recognize staff members who have made an important contribution to the campus community over the past year. Recipients of the Outstanding Staff Award provide exceptional service to others, work collaboratively across divisions or departments, demonstrate a clear commitment to equity and inclusion, and enhance the objectives of their department and the mission of Augsburg University through creativity, innovation, and hard work.

The Newcomer Award recognizes a staff person who has made a significant impact on campus life in a short amount of time. Staff who have been at Augsburg for two years or less (as of March 1, 2022) are eligible to receive this award.

Staff Senate will award five Outstanding Staff awards and one Newcomer award during the in-person event on March 22nd.

MNUDL Middle School Debate Volunteer Shifts Now Open – Sign Up Today

BE A VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER: JUDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL DEBATES

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University that provides academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities.

Our new debate season begins very soon! Middle school debate tournaments will happen from January-March, and we need your help to make it happen!

Judges observe debate rounds, pick a winner, and provide feedback to both teams. No experience needed- we’ll train you! We’re looking for all people who are interested in supporting students as they improve their argumentation and public speaking skills.

Judge at VIRTUAL tournaments, from 3:30-7:00, on these dates:

Student Worker Wanted: Assistant Records Specialist

The Student Assistant position in the Registrar’s Office is a customer service-driven and detail-oriented administrative position with a friendly team in an office setting. The Registrar’s Office is housed within the Academic Affairs Division. We provide services in the areas of document imaging, records retention, transfer evaluation, registration, graduation, term/curriculum records, class scheduling, grade recording, and veteran benefit certification. Our mission is to ensure the integrity of recorded data while providing timely service and communicating information regarding policies and procedures to the Augsburg University community. Consider joining our team and gaining meaningful experience that can be applied to many career fields.

Need Augsburg Experience? Take a Study Abroad/Away Course in Summer

If you haven’t completed your Augsburg Experience requirement yet, a short study abroad/away program is a great way to do it! In summer 2022, several short programs are on offer, each only 2-3 weeks of travel. You will earn credits AND complete your Augsburg Experience, a winning combo!

Take a Fine Arts Theater course in Puerto Rico in May

Sign up for the summer study away program, Community, Arts, and Culture in Puerto Rico, led by professor Beliza Torres Narvaez. Spend ~3 weeks in Puerto Rico in May exploring different arts in the context of community building, activism, and social justice in Puerto Rico!

Through this program, you will complete THR 295, a 4-credit course that fulfills the Fine Arts general education requirement. Participation in the program also fulfills your Augsburg Experience requirement!

Program details:
Travel: May 9-27, 2022
Course: THR 295: Community, Arts, & Culture in Puerto Rico (completes a Fine Arts requirement)

Any Augsburg student in good standing, including graduating Seniors, are eligible to apply

Students applying for this program can also apply for a small scholarship to help fund their experience. Scholarship information is on the program page, linked below. Scholarship applications due on January 17.

Alternative Spring Break Trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico

Augsburg Campus Ministries invites you to participate in its alternative spring break to Albuquerque, New Mexico, one of the oldest cities in the United States. Albuquerque has a unique multicultural history and heritage with Native American and Hispanic and Latino cultural influences. The city is located in north central New Mexico near the Sandia Mountains.
While in Albuquerque, we will be partnering with Service Learning Camps, and our days will be structured with community service projects, time for reflection, learning opportunities, and visiting local attractions.
Trip Details
Dates of Trip: March 12-19, 2022
Destination: Albuquerque, New Mexico
Transportation: Bus
Total Cost: $275, includes most lodging, transportation, and most meals. Please register by February 10, 2022 (see below). Please let us know if the cost presents a barrier to participation for you.

Registration Process:
1. Registration opens January 10, 2022.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Farewell wishes for Laura Swanson Lindahl

Laura Swanson Lindahl, director of marketing, will be leaving the shared services marketing and communication team that serves Augsburg University and Luther Seminary on January 18. She will be taking on a new role as director of marketing and communication at Metro State University in St. Paul. Laura has served Augsburg for nearly a decade, and the seminary since the shared services agreement began in 2017. At her request and due to the pandemic, there won’t be a large in-person farewell gathering. Instead, I invite colleagues to submit their congratulations and well wishes using the Google Form below. The responses will be compiled for her to enjoy on her last day.
