Chapel: Blessing of the Animals

Join us in Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 am for the Blessing of the Animals service as we celebrate St. Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Animals. Our service will include a lively blessing ritual of animals and pets to honor St. Francis’ devotion to all God’s creatures and a slideshow of pets. Jennifer Troy of Paws for Learning will join us with her therapy animals, and Ellen Weber, Christensen Center for Vocation Operations Program Associate, will offer a message. Bring your pet or therapy or emotional support animal (or a photo of them) for a blessing today. All are welcome!

Sabbatical Presentation: Experiences of Early-Career English Teachers

Please join Dr. Rachel Lloyd, Education Department, for a presentation of her sabbatical research project, “Experiences of Early-Career English Teachers,” Monday, October 3, from 2 to 3 pm in Lindell Library, room 301.

This qualitative study examined the narrated experiences of eight English Language Arts teachers who were in their first five years of practice in academic year 2021-22. The research is informed by prior research on teacher retention factors, and made specific inquiries into the enactment of dialogic pedagogies, and factors influencing the selection of literature within their curricula. Dr. Lloyd will present initial findings from these interviews, and facilitate a discussion of the implications of these findings for work with aspiring educators.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology
research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to
complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

The MN Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to 1000+ middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. Our students gain crucial skills like reading comprehension, critical thinking, argumentation, and public speaking, all while having fun and building confidence as part of a team. We need your help to make it happen!

We have multiple upcoming opportunities to judge debates IN PERSON in the Twin Cities. The majority of virtual judging opportunities have been filled.

We’re looking for judges for the following dates & locations:

OCTOBER 29: Roseville Area High School (wear a Halloween costume!)

NOVEMBER 12: Highland Park

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2023 and August 2024. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

Informed mentoring/advising of our students can be critical to their success, on-time graduation, and achieving their academic goals. The Degree Audit we’ve been using since 2021 is designed to help students and their faculty mentors better and more effectively communicate with each other about university and discipline-based requirements specific to each student as well as documentation of the student’s progression toward graduation.

In response to faculty requests, the Registrar’s Office Graduation Team is pleased to offer two sessions to help faculty learn more about the Degree Audit and how to use it as a tool for mentoring/advising students. Faculty may attend one or both workshops, and should RSVP planned attendance to one or both by sending an email to graduation@augsburg.edu no later than 2pm the day of the session.

Augsburg Students Present at North Star STEM Alliance Kick-Off

On Friday, September 23, eleven Auggies presented research posters at the 2022 Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA) Kick-Off, an annual event that celebrates the scholarly achievements of multicultural students in the sciences. These students conducted research last summer and during the previous academic year, working under the mentorship of a faculty member in their discipline. In addition to the poster session, the event also featured a panel of STEM professionals, moderated by Dr. Nana Owusu, an Augsburg alumnus (‘13) who recently earned his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Iowa.

North Star STEM Alliance Website

Welcome Janet Morales to the STEM Programs Team

Please join us in welcoming Janet Morales as the STEM Programs Grants Coordinator. She will divide her time in this part-time position between the NSF PRISM Scholarship Grant and the NSF PROSPECT grant which was awarded in April of 2022. The NSF PRISM grant supports STEM scholarship cohorts at Augsburg along with three community colleges. The NSF PROSPECT grant is a NSF scholarship research hub which will explore how equitable partnerships between two-year colleges and four-year institutions can empower low-income STEM transfer students. Researchers at Clemson University, East Carolina University, Southeast Community College, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Augsburg University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the University of Texas at Arlington, and YNOTI Solutions along with 14 two-year college partners are united by their goal to support domestic, low-income undergraduates as they navigate the transfer process.

Janet brings a strong record of working to increase access to higher education. She worked at Augsburg for over a decade in both admissions and managing the Traveler’s EDGE Scholarship program and has spent the last three years working for the Minnesota Department of Corrections working to increase access to higher education for incarcerated individuals. We are very fortunate to have her join the STEM Programs team!

Blessing of the Animals in Chapel on Friday, September 30

Join us in Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 am on Friday for the Blessing of the Animals service as we celebrate St. Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Animals. Our service will include a lively blessing ritual of animals and pets to honor St. Francis’ devotion to all God’s creatures and a slideshow of pets. If you wish to have a photo of your pet included in the slideshow, please send it to Janice Dames at dames@augsburg.edu by Thursday at 3:00 pm. Jennifer Troy of Paws for Learning will join us with her therapy animals, and Ellen Weber, Christensen Center for Vocation Operations Program Associate, will offer a message. Bring your pet or therapy or emotional support animal (or a photo of them) for a blessing on Friday. All are welcome!

Gabby will share about Orange Shirt Day, a day when we honor the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada and the United States. It is a national day of remembrance of the residential boarding school experience in which we witness and honor the healing journey of survivors and their families and commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation of Indian Boarding Schools.

Students – don’t forget about TutorMe! It is available to Augsburg students 24/7 and offers tutoring in over 300 subjects from qualified tutors. Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. At the top left of your screen there is an orange tab to see the side panel of resources. As you scroll down, you will see the “Augsburg Tools” section and underneath is the link to TutorMe. Augsburg Human Resources is pleased to announce that it has migrated required employee training to the Vector Solutions training platform (Vector Solutions recently acquired EVERFI’s higher education business).

The current trainings focus on the areas of Information security, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and discrimination & sexual harassment prevention.

Training in these areas helps strengthen Augsburg as a workplace, helps protect the rights of students, faculty and staff, and responds to requirements from the Department of Education (under Title IV) and our insurance providers. These interactive and engaging courses can be accessed from a computer, tablet or smartphone. Employees are required to complete information security training every year and other courses on even-numbered years.

Augsburg Required Training

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology
research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to
complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2023 and August 2024. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

Diapers Needed – We Can’t Reach Our Goal Without You

Diapers are not covered under safety net programs such as SNAP (food stamps) or WIC (women, infants and children). Households experiencing diaper needs are approximately 50 diapers short a month.

Two Workshops for Faculty Mentors (Advisors) October 3 and 5

Informed mentoring/advising of our students can be critical to their success, on-time graduation, and achieving their academic goals. The Degree Audit we’ve been using since 2021 is designed to help students and their faculty mentors better and more effectively communicate with each other about university and discipline-based requirements specific to each student as well as documentation of the student’s progression toward graduation.

In response to faculty requests, the Registrar’s Office Graduation Team is pleased to offer two sessions to help faculty learn more about the Degree Audit and how to use it as a tool for mentoring/advising students. Faculty may attend one or both workshops, and should RSVP planned attendance to one or both by sending an email to graduation@augsburg.edu no later than 2pm the day of the session.

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Two Workshops for Faculty Mentors (Advisors) October 3 and 5

Informed mentoring/advising of our students can be critical to their success, on-time graduation, and achieving their academic goals. The Degree Audit we’ve been using since 2021 is designed to help students and their faculty mentors better and more effectively communicate with each other about university and discipline-based requirements specific to each student as well as documentation of the student’s progression toward graduation.

In response to faculty requests, the Registrar’s Office Graduation Team is pleased to offer two sessions to help faculty learn more about the Degree Audit and how to use it as a tool for mentoring/advising students. Faculty may attend one or both workshops, and should RSVP planned attendance to one or both by sending an email to graduation@augsburg.edu no later than 2pm the day of the session.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology
research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to
complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Fast Facts on Diaper Needs in Our Community

One-third of Minnesota children 3 and under don’t have consistent access to clean diapers. That’s more than 75,000 babies and toddlers in our state.

It is Diaper Awareness Week! Did you know that Augsburg University nursing faculty members offer diapers at the Augsburg Central Health Commons, Mondays and Thursdays 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.?

“We offer diapers to anyone who comes in when we are open,” stated Dr. Katie Clark, Executive Director of Augsburg Health Commons. “The need has grown so much in the last few years and we realize that we need to put a spotlight on it quickly as our resources cannot keep up with the demand,” she added.

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2023 and August 2024. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

The Auggie Pride Awards are part of a peer recognition program that honors individual staff members who have made a significant contribution to department, division, or University-wide goals. All nominations are submitted through an online form and considered by Staff Senate. Nominations are kept on a rolling basis throughout the Academic Year, and awards are distributed to two staff every month.

Those honored will receive a letter from Staff Senate (including some text from the nomination letters) and a $25 Visa gift card as a token of our appreciation.
