“Afro-Indigenous Rhythms: A Bilingual Drumming and Percussion Workshop with Jonathan Alarcon”
April 18th from 7-8:30pm
Anderson Music Hall M2 Band Room
About Jonathan: “Jonathan Alarcón is a professional drummer in a wide range of musical styles, with his first love being jazz. He is well known as a session drummer and teacher and has toured in Mexico, South America, Europe, Taiwan and Japan with Hibridúz, the jazz band that he co-founded in 2005. In the last few years Jonathan has spent time studying and collaborating with the Garifuna drumming master Chichimán. His experiences in the Garífuna community have inspired him to become a spokesperson for the Garifuna and to highlight their strength and resilience in the face of on-going repression and social injustices. He is now sharing presentations in various universities focused on the importance of recognizing the unique characteristics of this afro-indigenous community.”
In this drumming workshop, Jonathan will lead participants on an exploration of the drumming patterns and unique characteristics of Garífuna musical styles.
All are welcomed to attend!
