As faculty finalize preparations for Spring 2025 courses, you are encouraged to review the Spring 2025 updated syllabus template for support in developing learner-centered syllabi and classroom policies.
Please recall all syllabi are required to include a Title IX statement.
It is recommended that all syllabi also include a FERPA statement. A model is provided.

There’s still time to apply for “Another Future Is Possible”: a short-term study abroad experience in the Netherlands during Summer Term 1.
You’ll earn eight credits (4 in sociology / urban studies, and 4 in English) in just one month.

Although many of us may be feeling fear or despair about the global climate crisis and our ability to address problems such as rising sea levels, global warming, and persistent inequalities, this study-abroad experience centers on imagination, invention, tangible change, and hope for our collective future. In our on-campus class sessions and our two weeks in the Netherlands, we’ll discuss sustainability challenges such as energy, water, food, waste and pollution, housing, and transportation. Then we’ll explore the ways in which artists, scientists, and other creative minds have addressed those challenges in fiction, poetry, policies, and practices in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. How can speculative literature and sociology help us invent and imagine new solutions to urban problems? What ideas from Rotterdam and Amsterdam might be implemented in the Twin Cities? What kinds of futures can we imagine for our rapidly changing world, and how do we transform those visions into a new reality?

Looking for a cool course to round out your schedule this spring? Consider taking Cultures of Violence (SOC 290)!
Street gangs and warfare. Police brutality and genocide. Domestic abuse and riots. What are the dynamics underlying these and other forms of violence? What do they have in common? How do they differ? This course takes violence in its many forms as a topic for sociological analysis. With this in mind, we will learn about the underlying social, interactional, group, and institutional dynamics that lead to violent behavior. In addition to the topics noted above, the course covers gender & violence, intergroup conflict, war propaganda, hate crime, the military-industrial complex, and more.
Cultures of Violence is scheduled for MWF, 1:50 – 3:00 p.m. It won’t be available again for two years, so register now!

Moodle Essentials Zoom Workshop, January 15, 10-11 am
Intended as an interactive complement to the Moodle Basics online course, this Zoom session will introduce you to the tools needed to be proficient at Moodle as an Augsburg instructor. This interactive session will acquaint you with some best practices of online course design and delivery.

Seeking Nominations for the Sabo Center Engagement Committee – Staff, Faculty, Students & Community Members
The Sabo Center is forming an advisory council to grow more and better collaborations, make our work more diffuse around campus and in our neighborhoods, and bring more voices into our processes and planning. This is an opportunity to learn more about and contribute to community-engaged work at Augsburg, build relationships, and share ideas and experiences in ways that can help inform our work.
The Sabo Center Engagement Council (SCEC) will support and guide community engagement and changemaking work at Augsburg and in our neighborhoods. The SCEC is not a decision-making body. Staff, Students, Faculty and Community Members are eligible for nomination.
Expectations:
Attend three committee meetings throughout the spring semester of 2025.
Advocate for community-engaged work broadly across campus and beyond.
Serve 2 year terms. We are tentatively planning for meetings the weeks of February 17th, March 17th, April 14th, and an informal gathering at the end of April.
Students & members of the community outside Augsburg are eligible for an honorarium to support their participation.

This month, a special election will be held for Minnesota Senate District 60, which encompasses Augsburg and other portions of south, northeast, and southeast Minneapolis. This special election is taking place due to the recent death of State Senator Kari Dziedzic.
The primary will take place on Tuesday, January 14, and the special election on Tuesday, January 28. Augsburg will have a polling location inside Christensen Center for students who reside on campus or in the local precinct on both dates. Absentee and in-person early voting options will be available beginning on January 9 for the primary and January 22 for the special election.
You can register to vote on primary day or on election day. An Augsburg student ID will work as proof of identity to register if you are voting on campus or in the city of Minneapolis.

Have you ever wanted to peek behind the scenes at the Cedar? Learn more about how to participate at our venue by attending our monthly Volunteer Orientation led by volunteer coordinator Jared Hemming! Beginning with our first show 35 years ago, all of the Cedar’s events have been staffed by volunteers in our program, which now includes more than 400 members. Volunteers earn credit to see future shows for free. Tasks include setting up the venue, selling tickets and concessions, and cleaning at the end of each performance. All are welcome to join our volunteer program.

What if I reserve a spot but can’t make it? No worries – we host monthly orientation meetings. Scroll down to next month’s calendar to see if our next orientation works for you.
Can my underage child volunteer? Volunteers must be 18+ to serve alcohol and to cleanup, with respect to alcohol sales and curfew laws. However, if you’d like to volunteer with your child, signup for the orientation and we can accommodate.
If I sign up for the orientation, can I bring a friend? The more the merrier here at The Cedar. Feel free to bring anyone who might be interested in volunteering to our orientation.
