URGO Summer Research Phase 1 Applications Due February 17

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome!
Phase 1 of the applications are due February 17th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!

The URGO Summer Research/Creative Activity Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 19th – August 1st) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Moodle Gradebook

Welcome back to Spring Semester!

The beginning of the semester is a good time to start organizing your Gradebook for the term.

Did you know that:

1. You can add a manual item to your gradebook without creating a separate activity.
2. Forums don’t automatically show in the gradebook.
3.There is an easy way to add extra credit to your course/gradebook.

Learn how to use all of the Moodle Gradebook functions in the new course created by your eLearning team called “Moodle Basics”.

As the semester begins and you build out your courses we would like to remind you that there is a new resource available to you that will help with all of your Moodle needs.

Moodle Basics: This is an asynchronous, online course that will help you get trained in how to use many functions of Moodle, including overall structure, communications, resources, activities, and gradebook. You are free to also refer back to this course at any time for any questions you may have regarding the above functions.

You can access this course by logging into Moodle, pressing Dashboard from the primary toolbar, and then locating “Moodle Support” under My courses.

As always, if you need any technology related support, we are here to support you.

Moodle Basics

Free Trip to US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. – April 8

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum

The trip will take place on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. If you would like to learn more about the
program or would like advising on the application, please contact the URGO office
at urgo@augsburg.edu. The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.
*You DO NOT need to be a US citizen*
Eligibility:
• Full-time student
• Sophomore or above with at least one year left before graduating
• 3.0 GPA or higher
• Proof of COVID vaccinations may be required

Special Election: Make a Plan to Vote Next Tuesday

On January 28, a special election will be held for Minnesota Senate District 60, which encompasses Augsburg and other portions of south, northeast, and southeast Minneapolis. This special election is taking place due to the recent death of State Senator Kari Dziedzic.

Augsburg will have a polling location inside Christensen Center for students who reside on campus or in the local precinct. You can register to vote on election day. An Augsburg student ID will work as proof of identity to register if you are voting on campus or in the city of Minneapolis.

Congrats to Susan Peacock

Susan Peacock, a valuable team member for the Center for Global Education & Experience (CGEE), will be retiring from her full-time work as of January 31st. Since 2012, Susan has been managing customized study abroad programs in El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and Cuba and she has done an AMAZING job! Since CGEE’s founding, more than 12,000 people have participated in our short-term programs, from hundreds of universities and institutions across the U.S. and Susan has played a significant role in the success of many of those programs. In addition to managing programs, Susan served as the country coordinator of CGEE’s Mexico program from 1987-1991. In the intervening years, she worked at The National Academies’ Committee on Human Rights, the Washington Office on Latin America, The National Security Archive at George Washington University, and the Guatemala Human Rights Commission. At CGEE, she often brought her expertise in peace-building and human rights to bear on the development of programming. We will greatly miss her contributions to our organization and we heartily thank Susan for her many years of commitment to peace and justice work!! Best wishes on the next leg of your journey from all your friends and colleagues at CGEE.

Supplemental Instructor (SI) Expectations and Responsibilities

Each week the SI will complete the following:

– 2 x 1 hr sessions: 1 virtual and 1 in person
– 1 hr of preparation: 40 min outside and 20 min with faculty

Responsibilities:

– SI will work through 2-3 new problems identified by the instructors. These problems will be homework-like and pertain to that week’s topics. Save time at the end of the sessions to answer homework questions.
– Cannot answer questions relating to the check-ins or grading.

New Student Position: Student: CLASS/Groves On-Call Test Proctor, Academic Year 2024-25

Test Proctors for the CLASS Office provide a welcoming and accessible environment to students taking their class exams in the Groves Lab. This is an on-call position. The responsibilities of the position include:

– Overseeing students taking exams to ensure the integrity of the test taking environment.
– Reading exams aloud and/or writing/typing for exams as needed.
– Asking questions and providing feedback to the CLASS Office Staff.
– Problem-solving and troubleshooting situations that occur with the assistance of the CLASS Office Staff.
– Maintaining confidentiality of private student information.
– Assisting with office related tasks.

Hours: On-call Hours vary from week to week. Most hours available to proctor are during finals week.

Rate of pay: $15.97/hour
This position is not benefits eligible.

Hospicing Modernity Reading Group for Staff and Faculty – Spring Semester

The Sabo Center is hosting a reading group for the 2021 book, Hospicing Modernity: Facing Humanity’s Wrongs and the Implications for Social Activism by Vanessa Machado de Oliveira.

This book helps us learn how to:
Reimagine how we respond to crisis and relearn how to interact with difference, uncertainty, complexity, and failure
Expand our capacity to hold personal and collective space for pain and grief
Interrupt our satisfaction with modern-colonial desires that cause harm
Create space for change that isn’t driven by desperate hope or a fear of desolate hopelessness

We’re tentatively planning to gather the week of February 17th, the first full week of March, the week of March 24th, April 7th and 28th.

Seeking Nominations for the Sabo Center Engagement Committee

The Sabo Center is forming an advisory council to grow more and better collaborations, make our work more diffuse around campus and in our neighborhoods, and bring more voices into our processes and planning. This is an opportunity for staff, faculty, students and community members to learn more about and contribute to community-engaged work at Augsburg, build relationships, and share ideas and experiences in ways that can help inform our work.

The Sabo Center Engagement Council (SCEC) will support and guide community engagement and changemaking work at Augsburg and in our neighborhoods. The SCEC is not a decision-making body. Staff, Students, Faculty and Community Members are eligible for nomination.

Expectations:
– Attend three committee meetings throughout the spring semester of 2025.
– Advocate for community-engaged work broadly across campus and beyond.
– Serve 2 year terms. We are tentatively planning for meetings the weeks of February 17th, March 17th, April 14th, and an informal gathering at the end of April.

Students & members of the community outside Augsburg are eligible for an honorarium to support their participation.

Audition for Paradise Park Zoo

Come audition for Augsburg’s spring production: Paradise Park Zoo! The sign up sheet is up on the theater’s doors. Auditions are next week, January 29 and 30! So come sign up for a 3 minute slot before it’s too late!

The animals at the zoo are very busy—experimenting with meditation, processing their relationships, honing their wilderness survival skills, hosting community meetings, arguing about doors. No one is talking about the cages. The cages are not important or are they? The cages are not…the cages are…the cages. Paradise Park Zoo is a three act meditation on capitalism and the radical left, with some dances.

GROUP AUDITION

Please prepare a 20-second movement sequence inspired by a Zoo animal. Each Group Audition will take up to 12 participants and run for 50 minutes.
Be ready to play improv games and read a short selection of the script.

Please share a 40-60 second piece. Actors may use any text (monologue, poem, excerpt from a book or newspaper, etc.). Musicians are encouraged to play contemporary music (Pop, Rock, R&B, Salsa, House or any music you might hear at a bar) which may include self-written work.
Bring your own instrument. A Piano will be provided.
If you’d like, you may share both a text and a song, just keep it under 2 minutes 🙂

2025 Fosdick Lecture on Preaching – March 6

Join Campus Ministry for the 8th Annual Fosdick Lecture on Preaching. Rev. Dr. DeWayne Davis will address the topic Shall Untruth Win? Faithful Preaching in an Age of Mistrust and Misinformation.

Observers have offered provocative words and phrases to describe our cultural and political moment. Post-truth. The fall of reason. Alternative facts. Can good news penetrate the noise of propaganda and conspiracy in our national discourse? Can a word of hope break through the cynicism and nihilism of cruel and radicalized politics? Now more than ever, from one-on-one meetings with parishioners to our proclamations from behind the sacred desk to our public utterances, courageous preachers must freshly voice the enduring wisdom of the Bible, the tradition, and religious experience to a people awash in propaganda and misinformation delivered through an inflammatory media landscape. Harry Emerson Fosdick summoned the courage to speak truthfully and faithfully during his time of rapid change and discoveries. Will we?
About Rev. Dr. DeWayne Davis: Rev. Dr. DeWayne Davis joined Plymouth Congregational Church as Lead Minister in December 2020. The son of two ministers and the youngest of fifteen children in Mississippi, Dr. Davis earned his B.A. at Howard University and an MA at the University of Maryland. He was awarded an M.Div. with Honors at Wesley Seminary and a D.Min. at Luther Seminary. He is ordained in the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. Dr. Davis brings a gift for preaching, an appetite for partnerships, a commitment to liberal theology and social justice, as well as experience in public policy work.

Location: Hoversten Chapel, Foss Hall. Lecture at 10:00 am; Reverend Davis will also preach at the 11:30 am chapel service. The Fosdick Lecture will also be livestreamed.

Virtual Court Watch Training Organized by Minnesota Freedom Fund – Monday, February 3, 7 – 8:30 p.m. CST

Court watching is a tactic to raise public awareness about our current legal system and also to hold the system accountable through witnessing, documenting, and sharing out. This is a powerful and critical tool for organizing because so much harm is never witnessed and then goes unchecked! Court watching is a tool of PEOPLE POWER against those in power!

MN Freedom Fund’s court watching program specifically watches bail hearings in Hennepin and Ramsey Counties. We are hoping to raise awareness about the injustices and disparities in this specific legal system moment. We want to establish a regular presence in court to hold the system players accountable and inspire more passion for local pre-trial changes! This training will be on how to court watch with MFF and then we’ll have shifts for you to sign up for right away!

Echoes from the Horn: Somali Lives in Cinema – February 2, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The Qalanjo Project Presents: Echoes from the Horn: Somali Lives in Cinema – a special program of the Black Europe Film Festival of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

The Qalanjo Project is a Somali cultural organization and creative arts studio located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This special Sunday program will feature films and discussions that highlight Somali filmmakers’ contributions and explore the Somali diaspora’s diverse narratives from The Cedar screen!

We will be joined in person by Abdulkadir Ahmed Said, Warda Mohamed, and Salad Hilowle. There will be additional workshops and community activities hosted by The Qalanjo Project with these incredible artists during the festival and after.

The estimated run time for the films is ~ 2 hours and 15 minutes, with a short opening introduction, a brief panel, and Q&A after the screenings with a total program time of 3.5 hours.

Free Vases and Decor

We did a little winter cleaning in the Events office (second floor of Christensen) and are planning on donating a slew of vases, centerpieces, and miscellaneous glassware. If you are interested in taking any of this off our hands before we head to Goodwill, please come on by during our office hours, and take them home!

Disabled Student Looking for a Backup PCA

Hi, my name is Zander I am a junior and I am also disabled and in a wheelchair I am looking for a backup PCA. I have a PCA come every day to help me with certain tasks in my dorm room. You would come with my main PCA needs a day off or can’t make it that day. Some of the tasks would entail refilling water bottles, refilling humidifiers, and making a bed expect this to take 15 or 30 minutes out of your day However you will schedule a time to come whenever it fits your schedule. and you will be paid $13 a day.
