Augsburg Senior Leadership Society application now open

Applications are now open for the 2018-2019 Augsburg Senior Leadership Society, which recognizes graduating seniors for their leadership contributions over the course of their tenure at Augsburg University. One individual who is inducted into the society will receive the Linda Schrempp Alberg Endowed Leadership Award, which has an award value of $500. Students will also be nominated for the Marina Christensen Justice Award, given out at Commencement. Film Screening – TONIGHT

Reminder: Please join the Center for Wellness and Counseling and the Melrose Center for the film screening of Straight/Curve, Redefining Body Image on Monday March 4 from 6 – 7:30 pm in OGC 100. The film aims to create a dialogue around body “size” and image and educate people on health and representation while capturing a visual slice of life of the fashion industry. We’ve come a long way since making a public commitment to taking action on climate change, and it’s time to reflect and look towards the next steps in our commitment to being thoughtful stewards of our place. The Environmental Stewardship Committee invites you all to attend one of the “Dinner Party Downlow” events this month, where we’ll eat together, share what’s been on our mind with environmental sustainability on campus, and begin imagining what’s next for Augsburg.

What brings you light?

Augsburg’s Interfaith Scholars, a group of students who are interested in exploring the religious diversity of the Augsburg student body, the wider Twin Cities community, and the United States through interreligious dialogue and action, are organizing a campus wide art project focused on the question: “What brings you light?” This is an ambiguous prompt, as our goal is to engage with folks from many different religious, spiritual, and secular backgrounds and to showcase what is the “light” in our lives despite our different beliefs.

We ask the members of the Augsburg community to reflect on what brings them light, and to photograph if they are able. Perhaps it is a beloved pet, a significant other, a spice rack because you love cooking, a pocket bible, a special place you spend time in, etc. If it is not something you’re able to photograph, a selfie would be a great submission! Please send appropriate content, as these photos will be displayed at the “Interfaith Art Project Showcase” on April 4th in the Gundale Chapel, located in Hagfors from 5pm-8pm.

We are also asking for an audio clip with your photo submission. You can talk about what your light is or answer one of the following questions the Interfaith Scholars has compiled. Please send your photo submission to interfaith@augsburg.edu. You may submit a text description or an audio recording between 30 seconds and 90 seconds long answering any of these questions:
– What brings you light?
– What brings you meaning?
– What brings you joy?

Please feel free to interpret the question in whatever way resonates with you. Be creative, be spontaneous, and be intentional. Please let us know if you have any questions on this art project or are unsure on how to complete the submission.

Minneapolis city street parking restrictions in effect until April 1st

To ensure that fire trucks and other emergency vehicles can continue to navigate Minneapolis neighborhoods, Winter Parking Restrictions are in effect.

From Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at 8:00 a.m. to April 1, do not park on the EVEN numbered side of non-Snow Emergency Routes, unless conditions allow the City to lift the ban earlier. Streets designated as Snow Emergency Routes and Parkways are not affected by Winter Parking Restrictions and vehicles can park on both sides of these streets, unless otherwise posted.

Winter parking restrictions are being put in place because Minneapolis has had so much snow that streets have narrowed to the point that access for emergency vehicles is restricted, posing a risk to public safety.

Vehicles that are parked in violation of the parking restrictions are subject to a ticket and tow.

Staff Appreciation Event – Collecting Campus Cupboard Donations

Each year, Augsburg University’s Staff Senate hosts a special event where staff are recognized for years of service, completion of the Diversity and Inclusion certificate program, and outstanding contributions to the campus community. The event includes refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres as well as a “candy bar.”

As part of this event, we are encouraging attendees to bring donations for Campus Cupboard, Augsburg’s student food shelf. Campus Cupboard is currently looking for donations of the following items:

Food donations: Microwaveable meals, healthy snack foods, trail mix, granola bars, peanut butter and other nut butters, canned beans, canned chicken and tuna, canned fruit, dried fruit, sandwich bread, cereal, ramen, baking supplies (flour, sugar, etc.), pasta sauce

Toiletry donations: Shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, deodorant, pads and tampons, lotion, sunscreen, nail clippers, etc.

Free tax clinics from Prepare + Prosper

Prepare + Prosper’s free tax clinics opened on Saturday, January 26 and will run through April 15.

More than 550 volunteers will serve nearly 13,000 people with free tax preparation and financial services at nine locations in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Hopkins. Volunteers went through up to 20 hours of comprehensive education on the tax codes and new federal tax laws.

“In the 1920’s, Rondo, Saint Paul’s largest African American neighborhood, was flourishing. With music, theatre, African American newspapers, and businesses booming, the community was thriving—until September of 1956, when construction of Interstate 94 tore through the Rondo community. Rondo homeowners resisted the construction, and protests began. Residents were forcefully removed from their homes. Thousands of Rondo homeowners were displaced. Homes and successful businesses were demolished, and a community was torn apart.
The construction of 94 shattered homes, businesses, and families. It did not shatter Rondo’s spirit”

Dr. Dana Frank will be visiting MN and coming to Augsburg as part of a Midwest tour with Witness for Peace. She is professor emerita from the University of California Santa Cruz and Honduran expert. Dana is a well known scholar and author of many books including “Bananeras: Women Transforming the Banana Unions of Latin America” and recently released a new book titled, “The Long Honduran Night: Resistance, Terror, and the United States in the Aftermath of the Coup.

Augsburg-Peruvian Jazz Concert

Music unites us, defying boundaries and borders. The Augsburg Jazz Ensemble is hosting a sextet from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. The concert will be led by Carlos Granthon, director of the Catholic University’s Big Band in Lima, and will feature a short set of Afro-Peruvian Jazz songs by our visiting ensemble, along with a Latin-oriented repertoire featuring a mixed ensemble of Peruvian and Augsburg musicians. Please join us for this great intercultural experience through music!

Registration for spring intramurals is now OPEN!! Registration will be open from now until next Wednesday, March 6th. Leagues will start the week of March.11th and run until April 18th. We will have volleyball, and basketball available this spring. Volleyball will be played on Monday nights, and basketball will be played on Thursday nights.

On Thursday, February 28th from 10:30-12:30 Homeward Bound representatives will be on campus in the lobby of the Christensen Center.

Homeward Bound serves children, adolescents and adults with a variety of disabilities, but we have the unique capacity of meeting the needs of those with the most severe and profound disabilities. Our direct support professionals, nurses, nurse care managers, supervisors and managers work together to provide respectful, dignified personal assistance and support to children and adults with disabilities.

Responsibilities include assisting people with daily living skills, meal preparation, medication administration, community activities and maintaining a clean, safe environment in an assigned group home. We do not require applicants to have experience. We have flexible scheduling so it is the perfect opportunity for students that are interested in healthcare.

Finalists for the Dean of Arts & Sciences position will be on campus over the next two weeks, and I invite you to take advantage of the opportunities to meet each of these candidates. Your participation in the open sessions serves two important purposes: it ensures that we receive broad feedback from the community on each candidate and (just as importantly) a good showing at the open sessions helps build our candidates’ interest in joining our community. We want to send a positive message about who we are in order to recruit the best candidate as well as discern the best candidates for us. Your participation in the process is crucial to both aims.

Our three candidates will be on campus Mon., March 4, Wed., March 6, and Wed. March 13. All public presentations will be held from 2:00-3:00 pm in OGC 100 — faculty and staff are encouraged to attend as many presentations as possible.

Curriculum vitae will be shared one business day prior to each visit–please watch for a message from me, which will provide links to the candidate’s CV and to a feedback form. Those who meet the candidates are strongly encouraged to provide feedback on perceived strengths and weaknesses, using the feedback form provided. These forms will be available until noon of the day following the interview visit.

The search committee will review the feedback you share via the online forms prior to forwarding its final recommendations to me. I will review that feedback as well.

I wish to extend my gratitude and acknowledge the excellent work of the search committee in reviewing almost 100 applications, participating in zoom interviews with those from a very deep pool who were deemed most promising, and identifying the three finalists to bring to Augsburg for campus visits

Norwegian Film Screening: March 13th: 6:00 – 9:00 pm

Norway Hub continues our Norwegian movie series with Before Snowfall (Før snøen faller), a film by Hisham Zaman. This series is made possible by the Norwegian Film Institute in collaboration with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Showings in the Twin Cities are presented as a result of a partnership between the Honorary Norwegian Consulate in Minneapolis, Augsburg University, and Norway House.

BEFORE SNOWFALL is a nontraditional road movie about family, love, dignity and honor. Siyar is the eldest man in the family. When his sister escapes from her own wedding, he is given the task to track her down and restore the family’s reputation. The hunt after his sister becomes a dangerous journey from east to west, where the collision of traditional bound cultures and modern western living challenges Siyar to find out who he really is. In Istanbul he meets the young girl Evin, who is also lost between borders in Europe. They experience a budding friendship and an infatuation. Evin chooses to travel with him, unknowing of his plan.

Minneapolis Parking restrictions in effect until April 1st

To ensure that fire trucks and other emergency vehicles can continue to navigate Minneapolis neighborhoods, Winter Parking Restrictions will go into effect Wednesday in Minneapolis.

The snow emergency declared on Sunday, February 24th will expire on Tuesday, February 26th at 8:00 p.m.

Beginning , Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at 8:00 a.m., Do Not Park on the EVEN numbered side of non-Snow Emergency Routes until April 1, unless conditions allow the City to lift the ban earlier. Streets designated as Snow Emergency Routes and Parkways are not affected by Winter Parking Restrictions and vehicles can park on both sides of these streets, unless otherwise posted.

Winter parking restrictions are being put in place because Minneapolis has had so much snow that streets have narrowed to the point that access for emergency vehicles is restricted, posing a risk to public safety.

Vehicles that are parked in violation of the parking restrictions are subject to a ticket and tow.

Want to engage in leadership, service, and learning to make a difference at Augsburg and in the wider community?

Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.

In these programs you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Current students with sophomore or junior status who plan to study on campus all of the 2019-20 academic year are eligible to apply.

What Brings You Light?

Augsburg’s Interfaith Scholars, a group of students who are interested in exploring the religious diversity of the Augsburg student body, the wider Twin Cities community, and the United States through interreligious dialogue and action, are organizing a campus wide art project focused on the question: “What brings you light?” This is an ambiguous prompt, as our goal is to engage with folks from many different religious, spiritual, and secular backgrounds and to showcase what is the “light” in our lives despite our different beliefs.

We ask the members of the Augsburg community to reflect on what brings them light, and to photograph if they are able. Perhaps it is a beloved pet, a significant other, a spice rack because you love cooking, a pocket bible, a special place you spend time in, etc. If it is not something you’re able to photograph, a selfie would be a great submission! Please send appropriate content, as these photos will be displayed at the “Interfaith Art Project Showcase” on April 4th in the Gundale Chapel, located in Hagfors from 5pm-8pm.

We are also asking for an audio clip with your photo submission. You can talk about what your light is or answer one of the following questions the Interfaith Scholars has compiled. Please send your photo submission to interfaith@augsburg.edu. You may submit a text description or an audio recording between 30 seconds and 90 seconds long answering any of these questions:
– What brings you light?
– What brings you meaning?
– What brings you joy?

Please feel free to interpret the question in whatever way resonates with you. Be creative, be spontaneous, and be intentional. Please let us know if you have any questions on this art project or are unsure on how to complete the submission.

Dr. Dana Frank will be visiting MN and coming to Augsburg as part of a Midwest tour with Witness for Peace. She is professor emerita from the University of California Santa Cruz and Honduran expert. Dana is a well known scholar and author of many books including “Bananeras: Women Transforming the Banana Unions of Latin America” and recently released a new book titled, “The Long Honduran Night: Resistance, Terror, and the United States in the Aftermath of the Coup.

Paid Fellowship for Trip to Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program annually selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select few universities to participate in the program. Multiple Augsburg students were selected last year for the trip.

The 2019 trip will take place on April 16th. Applications are due on February 28th and can be found at http://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. What Brings You You Light?

Augsburg’s Interfaith Scholars, a group of students who are interested in exploring the religious diversity of the Augsburg student body, the wider Twin Cities community, and the United States through interreligious dialogue and action, are organizing a campus wide art project focused on the question: “What brings you light?” This is an ambiguous prompt, as our goal is to engage with folks from many different religious, spiritual, and secular backgrounds and to showcase what is the “light” in our lives despite our different beliefs.

We ask the members of the Augsburg community to reflect on what brings them light, and to photograph if they are able. Perhaps it is a beloved pet, a significant other, a spice rack because you love cooking, a pocket bible, a special place you spend time in, etc. If it is not something you’re able to photograph, a selfie would be a great submission! Please send appropriate content, as these photos will be displayed at the “Interfaith Art Project Showcase” on April 4th in the Gundale Chapel, located in Hagfors from 5pm-8pm.

We are also asking for an audio clip with your photo submission. You can talk about what your light is or answer one of the following questions the Interfaith Scholars has compiled. Please send your photo submission to interfaith@augsburg.edu. You may submit a text description or an audio recording between 30 seconds and 90 seconds long answering any of these questions:
– What brings you light?
– What brings you meaning?
– What brings you joy?

Please feel free to interpret the question in whatever way resonates with you. Be creative, be spontaneous, and be intentional. Please let us know if you have any questions on this art project or are unsure on how to complete the submission.

Film Screening Monday, March 4 of Straight/Curve

Reminder: Please join the Center for Wellness and Counseling and the Melrose Center for the film screening of Straight/Curve, Redefining Body Image on Monday March 4 from 6 – 7:30 pm in OGC 100. The film aims to create a dialogue around body “size” and image and educate people on health and representation while capturing a visual slice of life of the fashion industry. They are hiring faith-centered, college-aged young adults for all positions their 2019 Summer Camp in Annandale, MN (June 1-July 30). They offer overnight camps — 3 sessions for high school students, 3 sessions for middle-school students and 2 sessions for children in grades 3-6.

TRIO McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2019

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2019 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2020 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2020. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2020.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

AWAKE: A Dream From Standing Rock

Augsburg Native American Film Series and Myron Dewey present Awake: A Dream from Standing Rock on March 29, 2019. The film AWAKE, A Dream from Standing Rock captures the story of Native-led defiance that forever changed the fight for clean water, our environment and the future of our planet.” Myron Dewey ( Newe-Numah/ Paiute-Shoshone from the Walker River Paiute Tribe, Agui Diccutta Band and Temoke Shoshone)–filmmaker, professor, historical trauma trainer and journalist–will present the film, which he worked on, and talk about what has happened since the action and to the water protectors and other Indigenous activists.

Want to engage in leadership, service, and learning to make a difference at Augsburg and in the wider community?

Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.

In these programs you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Current students with sophomore or junior status who plan to study on campus all of the 2019-20 academic year are eligible to apply.
