Augsburg Senior Leadership Society application now open

Applications are now open for the 2018-2019 Augsburg Senior Leadership Society, which recognizes graduating seniors for their leadership contributions over the course of their tenure at Augsburg University. One individual who is inducted into the society will receive the Linda Schrempp Alberg Endowed Leadership Award, which has an award value of $500. Students will also be nominated for the Marina Christensen Justice Award, given out at Commencement. Paid Fellowship for Trip to Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program annually selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select few universities to participate in the program. Multiple Augsburg students were selected last year for the trip.

The 2019 trip will take place on April 16th. Applications are due on February 28th and can be found at http://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. During the week of March 16th-23rd, Augsburg students will be traveling to Birmingham, Alabama to serve with Habitat for Humanity. You could be one of these! We’ll visit places like the Civil Rights Institute and learn from African-American activism both past and present. This trip is a great opportunity for students of different backgrounds to come together, learn, and build houses and community!

This year long event seeks to celebrate and preserve the work and legacy of María Irene Fornés, a Cuban-American playwright, director, and educator. Her work focuses on poverty and feminism, coming from the inspired view of a lesbian artist living during a crucial time in queer and civil rights. She is regarded as the American theatre’s “Mother of Avant-Garde.”

The rehearsal process of Mud has been one of healing, collaboration, and exploration. Through workshop based rehearsals, we discovered the soul of each scene together, taking it one step at a time. For many of us the world of this play feels so far removed from our own, yet it depicts themes that are relevant in the US today: financial and housing instability, limited access to education, and limited access to health care. We also agree that even though love comes in many forms, abuse is not one of them. – Lauren Syme, director

Summer Job Camp Fair

Are you looking for a summer job? Looking to gain leadership skills? Spend your summer working with youth.

On Monday, February 11, 2019 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm there will be a summer camp job fair in the lobby of the Christensen Center. The fair is free and open to all students. Camp representatives from a number of states are looking to hire students to work over the summer with youth. Jobs vary from camp counselors, activity instructors, kitchen help, etc. Housing and food is included, as well as, as a stipend. If interested, representatives will interview you at the fair. (dress attire – casual to business)

A few reasons why you should work at a camp:

Seventeen faculty members currently serve as Classroom Consultants, representing a wide variety of disciplines and pedagogical styles. The consultants have been trained to offer Augsburg professors confidential, non-judgmental assistance through a collaborative process.

Working with a consultant may include classroom or lab observations (in person or through the use of video), review of classroom/online materials and learning goals, brainstorming sessions to address classroom issues, or any combination based on your goals. This service is free and open to all Augsburg instructors.

TRIO McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2019

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2019 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2020 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2020. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2020.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

Free LGBTQ+ Mental Health Support Group – Thursdays near Campus

A NAMI Young Adult LGBTQ Connection free mental health support group for ages 18-30 meets on the first and third Thursdays in the community room at Boneshaker Books (2002 23rd Ave. S.) from 6:00-7:30 p.m. This is right across the pedestrian bridge from campus – a ten minute walk or five minute drive.

The group is free. No registration is required. The group is co-facilitated by Oliver, a trans nonbinary social work major at Augsburg. Augsburg University is proud to be part of the HowlRound Theatre Commons Celebrando Fornés/Celebrating Fornés. This year long event seeks to celebrate and preserve the work and legacy of María Irene Fornés, a Cuban-American playwright, director, and educator. Her work focuses on poverty and feminism, coming from the inspired view of a lesbian artist living during a crucial time in queer and civil rights. She is regarded as the American theatre’s “Mother of Avant-Garde.”

The rehearsal process of Mud has been one of healing, collaboration, and exploration. Through workshop based rehearsals, we discovered the soul of each scene together, taking it one step at a time. For many of us the world of this play feels so far removed from our own, yet it depicts themes that are relevant in the US today: financial and housing instability, limited access to education, and limited access to health care. We also agree that even though love comes in many forms, abuse is not one of them. – Lauren Syme, director

The Multicultural Student Services and Student Financial Services are holding two FAFSA completion workshops in order to assist students in completing their FAFSA applications.

One workshop is on Thursday, February 7th 1:00-2:30pm the other on Wednesday, February 13th 4:00-5:30pm.

Both workshops will be held in Sverdrup 201. Students should be sure to bring their 2017 taxes/W-2s, parent’s 2017 taxes/W-2s and their FSA ID login. Computers will be available for use but students are welcome to bring their own laptops. Do you have a passion for singing and/or a cappella? Convocadence is Augsburg’s only a cappella co-ed group and are looking for new members who are committed and passionate about music. Rehearsals are on Friday nights from 6-7:30 and Sundays from 4:30-6. We will be holding auditions on Tuesday, February 12th and Wednesday, February 13th from 6-8:30pm. 3 Auggies Selected for National Fellowship in Public Policy

Three Augsburg rising seniors were selected for the nationally competitive Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute in 2019. This seven-week program prepares students for graduate school in public policy and careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service at five of the top public policy schools in the country. Not only is this summer program fully-paid, but it promises a minimum of $5,000 scholarship to a consortium of public policy graduate schools.

Natalya Arevalo, Political Science and Philosophy, will be attending the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute.

Noah Greenfield, Political Science, will be attending the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute.

Abdul Sharif, Political Science and International Relations, will be attending Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs.

Only 20% of applicants receive the PPIA award. Congratulations to these students for their outstanding achievement!

Camp representatives from a number of states are looking to hire students to work over the summer with youth. Jobs vary from camp counselors, activity instructors, kitchen help, etc. Housing and food is included, as well as, as a stipend. If interested, representatives will interview you at the fair. Seventeen faculty members currently serve as Classroom Consultants, representing a wide variety of disciplines and pedagogical styles. The consultants have been trained to offer confidential, non-judgmental assistance through a collaborative process.

Working with a consultant may include classroom or lab observations (in person or through the use of video), review of classroom/online materials and learning goals, brainstorming sessions to address classroom issues, or any combination based on your goals. This service is free and open to all Augsburg instructors.

Paid Fellowship for Trip to Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program annually selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select few universities to participate in the program. Multiple Augsburg students were selected last year for the trip.

The 2019 trip will take place on April 16th. Applications are due on February 28th and can be found at http://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. FAFSA & MN Dream Act Completion Workshops

The Multicultural Student Services and Student Financial Services are holding two FAFSA completion workshops in order to assist students in completing their FAFSA applications.

One workshop is on Thursday, February 7th 1:00-2:30pm the other on Wednesday, February 13th 4:00-5:30pm.

Both workshops will be held in Sverdrup 201. Students should be sure to bring their 2017 taxes/W-2s, parent’s 2017 taxes/W-2s and their FSA ID login. Computers will be available for use but students are welcome to bring their own laptops. TRIO McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2019

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2019 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2020 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2020. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2020.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 80 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on April 15. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) by March 5th (a mentor-approved abstract is required to register).

Applications are now open for the 2018-2019 Augsburg Senior Leadership Society, which recognizes graduating seniors for their leadership contributions over the course of their tenure at Augsburg University. One individual who is inducted into the society will receive the Linda Schrempp Alberg Endowed Leadership Award, which has an award value of $500. Students will also be nominated for the Marina Christensen Justice Award, given out at Commencement. The John Engman Writing Prize, a literary competition sponsored by Murphy Square and the Augsburg English Department, is awarded each year to promising writers.

This year’s submission deadline is February 15th, 2019. Judges of the competition will select winners in each of the categories of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction.

To enter, writers must submit at least one of the following:

Short Fiction – One complete short story of not more than 15 pages.
Creative Non-fiction – One complete piece not longer than 15 pages.
Poetry – At least three poems.

All writers must be enrolled at Augsburg University and may enter each of the categories as often as they wish, but they may only win in one. Names of writers must not be on the works submitted.

Entries must be submitted through Moodle. Winners will be notified by March 1st and will be awarded gift cards to the university bookstore.

Free tax clinics from Prepare + Prosper

Prepare + Prosper’s free tax clinics opened on Saturday, January 26 and will run through April 15.

More than 550 volunteers will serve nearly 13,000 people with free tax preparation and financial services at nine locations in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Hopkins. Volunteers went through up to 20 hours of comprehensive education on the tax codes and new federal tax laws.

Devoney Looser ’89 Book Signing TONIGHT

If you’re a regular reader of the Augsburg Now magazine, you may recognize leading literary scholar, Austen expert, and roller derby devotee Devoney Looser ’89 from the featured article “No Plain Jane.” She is the author or editor of seven books on literature by women. Looser will be visiting Augsburg’s campus on TONIGHT at 7 p.m. to read from her most recent book “The Making of Jane Austen” in Hagfors 150. Books will be available for purchase at this event and Looser will stick around to visit with guests and sign their copies after the reading.
