Auggie Basics Housing – Application Open for Summer 2022 and 2022-2023 Academic Year

Augsburg University is accepting applications for Auggie Basics Housing for summer 2022 and the 2022-23 academic year.

DEADLINE: Monday, April 4, 2022 at 5pm ABOUT THE PROGRAM: Auggie Basics Housing is designed to address the needs of students who are experiencing housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into Auggie Basics Housing will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student.

MEAL PLANS: Students are not required to have a meal plan if they are selected for Auggie Basics Housing, including those placed into buildings that require one.

ELIGIBILITY FOR PROGRAM: To be eligible for Auggie Basics Housing, students must be returning students and not receiving other housing aid from the University. Incoming first-year and transfer students are not eligible to apply.

Students may apply for housing either for the summer term and/or for the academic year. Students must reapply each academic year, and may be part of the program for up to two academic years. Being chosen for Auggie Basics Housing one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

Student Worker Position: Digital Content Assistant, Marketing (Summer and Academic Year 2022-23)

The Marketing and Communication division is seeking to hire one student employee to serve as a digital content assistant for the summer of 2022 and the 2022-23 academic year. This position will be for a minimum of 5 hours/week and a maximum of 8 hours/week.

Ideal candidates will be available to work beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monday-Friday.

Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:

Distributing A-mail on a daily basis by 9 a.m.
Designing digital display screens using the WordPress platform.
Performing content edits on the Augsburg University website: modifying text, creating pages, and uploading images.
Occasionally assist student/campus events to gather photos for Augsburg University’s official social media accounts.
Occasionally distribute mail/packages/notes to other staff members on campus.

Applications are Now Open for the 2022-23 PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2022 (graduating by December ‘24)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 18 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 27 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

4th Annual Intercollegiate Film Festival – April 2

Like film? Join us for the 4th Annual Intercollegiate Film Festival, Saturday, April 2nd in Science 123. Doors open at 6 pm. The event is free.

The festival features films from students around the state. Filmmaker Raven Johnson will join us for a Q&A prior to the screening. Following the screening, there will be an awards presentation.

Raven Johnson is an award-winning, Liberian-American filmmaker. Originally from Minnesota, Raven is a MFA graduate from NYU Tisch Graduate Film, a 2021 Jerome Emerging Artist at the Anderson Center at Tower View, and a 2019 resident of Cannes Film Festival’s Cinéfondation Residence in Paris. In 2017, Raven was named one of AT&T’s Emerging Filmmakers for her short film, Tween, which also won the Student Choice Award at the 41st Cleveland International Festival and had its international premiere in 2018’s BFI London Film Festival. Her latest short film, The Trucker, recently had its World Premiere at the 2021 Palm Springs Shortfest. Raven is currently developing her first feature film, RUBY: PORTRAIT OF A BLACK TEEN LIVING IN AN AMERICAN SUBURB which takes place during the 2020 summer of Covid-19 and racial justice protests after the murder of George Floyd.

Excellence Awards are given to work that demonstrate creative, technical, aesthetic, and/or otherwise cinematic strength. ‘Best of Show’ will be programmed at the Twin Cities Film Festival Oct. 20th-29th. Join Augsburg student leaders, the Sabo Center and ISAIAH MN Young Adult Coalition at our state Capitol on Tuesday, April 5th from 3pm-7:30pm to let our state’s leaders know that we care and are serious about climate, education, affordable housing and other issues that affect our communities! This will be a time to rally around rent stabilization, attend a workshop to learn more about issues on climate, education, policing and care for all, and hear from our leaders including Attorney General Keith Ellison. Our time will conclude with an Iftar Dinner.

*A group from Augsburg will be meeting in the Quad at 2:30pm to walk to the Light Rail and take the Green Line out to the Capitol in St Paul.

In this talk, we will explore how the skeleton of the cell is able to arrange itself and how enzymes could move faster than expected when they perform their chemical reaction.

Kick off Earth month by joining the Indigenous Auggies (AISA) community TODAY as we offer prayers, songs, and dances for the blessing of our student garden plot. The ceremonial blessing protocol before we transplant any plants. We do this to show respect. Elder Hope Flanagan will be leading us in prayer. The Little Earth singers, along with four jingle dress dancers will also be sharing songs and dances. The greatest gift you can bring to this event is your presence!

Full-Time Faculty: Apply for the 2022 Integrated Course Design (ICD) Grant Program

CTL’s annual ICD Grant program is offered to encourage faculty to develop their knowledge and skills in evidence-based, equitable course design. To that end, recipients of the grant will receive a $2000 stipend to participate in a 4-day workshop Monday May 23 through Thursday May 26, 2022 (9:00am – 12:30pm each day), optional coaching throughout the summer, and a wrap-up lunch in late August. To demonstrate application of the principles of the workshop, participants will also be asked to produce a final product that utilizes evidence-based, equitable course design (e.g. a syllabus).

Courses proposed for this grant may be new courses or courses undergoing substantial revision; preference will be given to courses being offered in the next academic year (2022-2023). Courses may be team-teaching collaborative efforts or individually-taught. Although open to full-time faculty at all stages in their career, preference will be given to early-career faculty.

The application form and samples of successful past applications are posted on the CTL Website under “Grants & Travel Funds; Annual Grants & Awards”. Applications are due Friday, April 8th at Noon.

April 22nd is Earth Day. We are dedicating the entire month of April to celebrate our Home. Join us in attending the many events we have planned throughout the month!
Come rekindle community, self-heal, and reconnect with the Earth through celebrations during Earth Month. These Environmental Action Committee-supported events will allow you further connection to green spaces on campus, engagement with educational experiences by all forms of teachers, exploration of inclusive career paths, and the opportunity to build solidarity with social justice work bonded by intersectionality. Together in community, learn from Indigenous cultures, be rewarded with rest and find its productivity, fix your bike, have a ball with slow fashion, eat local, and then finish the month with a community bonfire into the sunset.

Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium – April 12

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton festival. The festival falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.

This year Zyzzogeton will feature posters from about 50 undergraduate researchers in the science, social science and humanity disciplines.

Zyzzogeton will take place on Tuesday, April 12, 3 – 4:30pm in Hagfors Center. There will be a convocation schedule for that day and no classes scheduled during the event time, so we hope that all students, faculty and staff are able to attend!

URGO Academic – Year Research Funds

URGO now has funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 80 hours of research by May 23.

Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals immediately. The URGO Advisory Committee will begin reviewing proposals February 21st.

Augsburg University Campus Ministry invites you to join us on Tuesday, March 22, at 10:00 am as Augsburg University welcomes Pastors Ingrid Rasmussen and Angela Khabeb for the sixth annual Fosdick Lecture in Preaching.

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, located just off of Lake Street in the 3rd Precinct, found itself at the heart of the explosive response to the brutal killing of George Floyd and the centuries of trauma that preceded his death. During the months that followed the uprising, the church responded by distributing donated food, diapers, toiletries, plywood for boarding up broken windows, cleaning supplies, and tools to the community. This remained a primary part of Holy Trinity’s work throughout the summer and fall of 2020. Pastors Rasmussen and Khabeb will share their insights on preaching during this time of crisis and reflect on how these experiences continue to shape their understanding of theology and ministry.

2022-2023 Multicultural Life Scholarship Application is closing soon! This is a great opportunity for underrepresented undergraduate students in the Augsburg Day Program. Those who are eligible can be awarded between 2,500-5,000 annual, renewable awards.

If you are a current scholarship recipient and want to renew your award make sure to fill the application!

These scholarships include: ASIA Scholarship, Bonnie Wallace American Indian Scholarship, HOLA Scholarship, LQBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, M. Anita Gay Hawthorne Scholarship, and Scholastic Connection Scholarship.

DACA and undocumented students are eligible and highly encouraged to apply. Promise, Presidential and ActSix Scholarship recipients and International Students (F-1 and J-1) are not eligible for this award.

Metropolitan Council Hiring, Summer Internships

Metropolitan Council has a number of summer internships listed in Handshake and on their webpage at https://metrocouncil.org/Employment/Internships.aspx.

Their internship program offers a wide variety of opportunities to qualifying interns. All majors welcome. The program is designed to educate and mentor interns by providing professional on-the-job training and development. Participants of our internship program receive an hourly salary! Most interns work full-time during the summer, and some opportunities continue part-time through the school year.

Eligibility
Must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program (associate’s or bachelor’s or master’s) or be a recent graduate (within 12 months from posting date) from a degree program (associate’s or bachelor’s or master’s).

Must be a citizen or national of the United States; a lawful, permanent resident; or have authorization to work in the United States. (Documentation to verify employment eligibility will be required at the time of employment.)

Summer internships
Participants receive an hourly salary. Most interns work full-time during the summer, and some opportunities continue part-time through the school year.

Program dates
The 12-week programs begin each summer in late May and end in mid-August.

Free N95 Masks Are Available Through Some Pharmacies

Distribution of free N95 masks has begun at some Minnesota pharmacies.

Hy-Vee stores have begun giving out free masks, and some Walgreens stores also have masks. Masks will be delivered to additional Walgreens locations over the next couple of weeks. CVS reports that they will begin distributing free N95 masks “in the coming weeks.”

Tara Mader (HPE) and Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright (BIO), the 2022-2023 coordinators of the ICD grants and workshops) that will (1) introduce you to the key components of integrated course design* (ICD), (2) work with you to plan an immediate, practical improvement you can make to a course, and (3) give you “preferred status” if you apply for a 2022-2023 ICD grant (open to full-time faculty, only).

CTL ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) take place immediately before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm over Zoom and recordings are archived on the CTL website. Presenters have 15 minutes to present in any way they choose (as long as it is compatible with synchronous Zoom). CTL’s theme for the 2021-2022 academic year is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, a broad topic that looks to our current “new normal” and beyond.

Faculty Grant Applications to Support Scholarship Now Open

The Provost and Faculty Development Committee are pleased to offer two types of grants to support Augsburg faculty scholarship in Summer 2022 and/or during the 2022-2023 academic year.

The Scholarship Grant provides up to $4000 to support the scholarly endeavors of full-time Augsburg faculty.

The Provost’s Internationalization Grant provides up to $2500 to support the collaboration of full-time Augsburg faculty with an Augsburg CGEE Global site or with existing international partner institutions.

Although there have been gains in diversity across various healthcare sectors, leadership positions continue to be disproportionately held by White men. Understanding the impact that social determinants of health like racism and discrimination have on healthcare outcomes for Black women, it is bad business for them to be underrepresented at the decision and policy-making levels in healthcare. How do we solve this pervasive problem?
Join us as we share how the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCM) is leveraging a formal sponsorship program focused on increasing the representation of Black women at the senior leadership level. Also, participants will learn how UCM is using a formal sponsorship program – including critical conversations at the executive leadership level about the lived experience of Black women – to accelerate workplace culture transformation and advance healthcare equity. We will also explore how this may be applied in other organizations.

Chapel: Marking the Onset of the Covid Emergency

Join us at 10:40 am in Hoversten Chapel for a Commemoration of the Second Anniversary of the Onset of the Covid Crisis. On January 31, 2020, the Secretary of Health and Human Services determined that a public health emergency existed nationwide. In recognition of two years of the pandemic, we will hold space for grieving those we have lost and reflecting on the challenges and losses.

Following the service, the chapel space will be open for reflection and the campus pastors will be available for students or staff.

URGO Summer Research – Phase 1 Applications Due February 16

Are you looking for a paid summer research or creative activity opportunity here on campus? URGO applications for 2022 summer research are now available on the URGO website at http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/research/on-campus-research/ All fields of study welcome!

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

Alternative Spring Break Trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico

Augsburg Campus Ministries invites you to participate in its alternative spring break to Albuquerque, New Mexico, one of the oldest cities in the United States. Albuquerque has a unique multicultural history and heritage with Native American and Hispanic and Latino cultural influences. The city is located in north central New Mexico near the Sandia Mountains.
While in Albuquerque, we will be partnering with Service Learning Camps, and our days will be structured with community service projects, time for reflection, learning opportunities, and visiting local attractions.

Apply For URGO Student Conference Travel Funding

URGO has a limited amount of funds this year to support students presenting their research at conferences.

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly to make decisions on applications.

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. One of these initiatives was the requirement of Augsburg faculty and staff to complete an annual anti-racism training.

Please note that there are two remaining opportunities for faculty and staff to attend this training and fulfill this requirement. The spring training opportunity will take place on Thu, Feb 17 at 3:30-7:00 p.m. via Zoom and the make-up May training opportunity will take place on Thu, May 12 at 2:30-6:00 p.m. via Zoom.

Augsburg Theater Department’s Production of “White” Opens Tonight

Tickets for the Theater Department’s production of “White” by James Ijames, directed by Beliza Torres Narváez, are officially on sale!

Performances will be held on October 28th-30th at 7pm in the Foss Center!

All guests will be required to provide proof of vaccination and a photo ID in order to come to the performance. Along with this, all patrons must wear a mask inside all Augsburg buildings. Additionally, we will not be accepting late seating, so make sure to arrive at least 20 minutes before the performance.

We will not be selling tickets at the door, so make sure to reserve your seat beforehand.

All Saints Commemoration

We will hold an All Saints service in chapel November 5 at 10:40 am. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. At this service we praise God for the saints who’ve gone before us, especially honoring ones who have been personally significant in our faith. We’ll also remember those who have died, especially in this past year. We celebrate and remember through song and prayer. Augsburg Is a 20-Year Top Producer of Gilman Scholars

Augsburg University was recognized yesterday by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for having produced the most Gilman recipients over the past 20 years in the “small institutions” category.

60 Augsburg students have used Gilman awards toward a study abroad experience since 2001!

This amazing accomplishment would not have been possible without the dedication of MANY people on campus to Gilman’s mission to make study abroad more accessible and inclusive. Special thanks to Leah Spinosa de Vega for recognizing the potential for Gilman winners at Augsburg so many years ago, and putting the recruitment building blocks in place. Thanks also to all the staff in the TRIO office for collaborating on workshops each semester and tirelessly identifying and encouraging great applicants. Their work to promote student success stories has helped more Auggies SEE themselves as Gilman winners.

Especially during this pandemic time when many study abroad experiences have been interrupted and even Gilman awards were not available due to COVID, Augsburg staff and faculty can be proud that so many Auggies have had transformative experiences abroad thanks to Gilman scholarships over the last 20 years.

Established in 2001, the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program has provided scholarships to outstanding U.S. undergraduate students who, due to financial constraints, might not otherwise participate. Since the program’s inception, more than 34,000 Gilman Scholars have studied or interned in more than 155 countries.

The Auggie Pride Awards are part of a peer recognition program that honors individual staff members who have made a significant contribution to department, division, or University-wide goals. All nominations are submitted through an online form and considered by Staff Senate. Nominations are kept on a rolling basis throughout the Academic Year, and awards are distributed to two staff every month.
