Apply for Mayo Innovation Scholars Program

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the projects or innovations and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,000. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Join the program Roots to Rap: Islam in America for a spring break you’ll never forget. Explore the neighborhoods of New York, meet with religious leaders, community organizers, and engage with the history of Islam in America!

This program will meet throughout spring semester, but much of the coursework will take place during your travel on spring break.

Internship registration (including Augsburg Experience internship registration) is a two-step process. Fill out the Internship Site Agreement Form and the Internship Registration Form on the Strommen Center website to get credit/the Augsburg Experience graduation requirement.

You have to register your internship before you start your hours. We cannot give credit or the Augsburg Experience for completed, past internships. Please contact strommen.internships@augsburg.edu with internship-related questions.

If you are doing this internship for credit in your major, you also need to meet with your faculty adviser to learn what academic work will be required. Submission of this work to your faculty supervisor is necessary before you will receive credit.

Payroll Notice For 2018-2019 Academic Year – For all Faculty, Staff and Student Workers

With the pay date of September 14th being the first payroll of the Academic Year, which can be the first paycheck for many new employees, we ask that everyone review their paystubs for accuracy. If you feel you were not paid correctly please stop by the Payroll office, Science Hall – 148 or email payroll@augsburg.edu.

Student Workers
The September 14th pay date is for any hours worked through pay period ending 09/08/2018, these hours are considered summer hours. Please make sure you have been paid for all summer worked hours, if you were not paid please check with your manager to ensure they set up a summer position for you.

Any hours worked in the current pay period 09/09/2018 – 09/22/2018 will be paid on September 28th. These hours are considered Work Study hours and will be throughout the Academic Year. Please make sure when logging into Kronos you are selecting a Work Study position, if you do not see a Work Study position, please notify your supervisor as this could create payroll issues.

The MN Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for debate judges and hospitality volunteers for its upcoming high school debate tournaments.

No debate experience? No problem. We train volunteers at every tournament.

What Hospitality Volunteers Do:

● Greet & guide kids, coaches, and judges as they arrive at tournaments
● Answer questions and assist with wayfinding at tournament sites
● Distribute goody bags to students and thank-you gifts to our judges

What Judges Do:

● Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
● Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
● Choose the winner of each debate!

Opportunities to Volunteer:

● October 5th & 6th: U of M (East Bank)
● October 13th: Season Opener (Humboldt HS, St. Paul)

Open Ice

Due to current construction in the Augsburg ice arena, open ice time is available for all students at the Highland Arena (800 Snelling Ave S, St Paul, MN 55116) from 4:20 to 5:20 p.m. The week of September 10th, the facility is reserved Monday and Wednesday for men’s open hockey, while Tuesday and Thursday will be for women’s open hockey. Until the completion of the rink, the M/W and T/Th schedule will alternate weekly between men’s open hockey and women’s open hockey. All students are welcome to participate and will need to provide their own gear (skates, helmet, pads, etc.).

Scaffolding Strategies for Integrative Learning Experiences – Wednesday, 9/26

How does one create a set of assignments that build upon one another and combine into a more in-depth and meaningful learning experience? In this session, James Vela-McConnell (Sociology) will share examples of integrated assignments in both lower and upper division courses on Wednesday, September 26 from 3:30 to 4:30 PM in OGC 100. Participants will brainstorm ideas for scaffolding learning experiences within their own courses. Adjunct instructors on contract this semester who attend this event are eligible for a $50 stipend. We’ll also have this session available remotely via Zoom.

Who Are “We?” A Sikh Perspective on Vocation, Justice and Death by Rahuldeep Gill

Please join us for two sessions with Rahuldeep Gil on October 3rd for the Bernhard M. Christensen Symposium.

The first session will be at 10:00-11:00 am in the Hoversten Chapel. Gil’s talk will be on Who Are “We?” A Sikh Perspective on Vocation, Justice and Death.

The second session will be at 2:00-3:30 pm in the Hoversten Chapel. The second session will be focused on Igniting Hope in Un-Hopeful Times and on Gill’s teaching of memory and hope.

Rahuldeep Gill, Ph.D., is a sought-after Speaker, Author, and Igniter for social change, whose life goal is to develop effective and heartful leaders with broad perspectives to drive innovations. Through his lectures and workshops he works to build pluralism and cross-cultural relations to inspire connected communities on campus, in the workplace, and in the marketplace.

He recently published his first book, Drinking from Love’s Cup, with Oxford University Press, and he is currently writing two more books about leadership and pluralism. He is a tenured professor and Campus Interfaith Strategist at California Lutheran University, and is the visiting professor of Sikh Studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. He has twice been voted Cal Lutheran’s Diversity Professor of the Year and lives in Los Angeles with his family.

Author Abdi Nor Iftin – Sept. 17

Abdi Nor Iftin, author of “Call Me American”, will be speaking at a Club Book event on Monday, September 17th at 7:00 PM in Hoversten Chapel. Iftin’s immigration story begins in war-torn Mogadishu, where he risked his life chronicling the rise of Islamic extremism in Somalia as an underground NPR correspondent. He narrowly escaped to a refugee camp in Kenya, where against long odds he received an invitation from the U.S. Embassy to interview for a visa in 2014. His story was the subject of a popular episode (“Abdi and the Golden Ticket”) of the radio show and podcast This American Life. This event is being sponsored by Hennepin County Library.

The achievements of two Nobel Peace Prize laureates will be honored and celebrated: Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). The program will explore the tensions between conflict and reconciliation, justice and forgiveness, hope and fear—paradoxes both laureates have successfully navigated over the last few years.

Open Ice

Due to current construction in the Augsburg ice arena, open ice time is available for all students at the Highland Arena (800 Snelling Ave S, St Paul, MN 55116) from 4:20 to 5:20 p.m. The week of September 10th, the facility is reserved Monday and Wednesday for men’s open hockey, while Tuesday and Thursday will be for women’s open hockey. Until the completion of the rink, the M/W and T/Th schedule will alternate weekly between men’s open hockey and women’s open hockey. All students are welcome to participate and will need to provide their own gear (skates, helmet, pads, etc.).

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the projects or innovations and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,000. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Augsburg Theater Dept. is putting on a production of “The Arsonists” by Max Frisch, directed by Tony Award-winning Barbra Berlovitz and we are in need of a Deck Manager/ASM!

This role includes: working alongside the Stage Manager and Director managing rehearsals and performances. Responsible for obtaining/pulling rehearsal props, responsible for backstage elements of performances, run crew supervision, and more!

Scaffolding Strategies for Integrative Learning Experiences – Wednesday, 9/26, 3:30 – 4:30 PM

How does one create a set of assignments that build upon one another and combine into a more in-depth and meaningful learning experience? In this session, James Vela-McConnell (Sociology) will share examples of integrated assignments in both lower and upper division courses. Participants will brainstorm ideas for scaffolding learning experiences within their own courses. Adjunct instructors on contract this semester who attend this event are eligible for a $50 stipend. We’ll also have this session available remotely via Zoom.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities.

We are looking for a few excellent folks who can help us deliver great debate tournaments for MN Urban Debate League high schoolers this semester and middle schoolers next semester.

You do not have to be a student to do tournament support.

Job Duties:

● Post signage and tournament information throughout building
● Carry supplies (food and materials) in and out of location
● Help set-up supplies and Clean-up
● Help greet volunteers
● Ballot Runner – go to classrooms pick-up and return debate ballots
Job Qualifications:

● Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs and walk significant distance (within a school building)
● Pass a background check
● Have great customer relation skills – welcoming to volunteers, students and coaches
● Be reliable and able to get to tournament location; be professional in your conduct with students and staff.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is seeking new student employees for the academic year of 2018-2019. Each position will be scheduled to work 10-15 hours per week.

Job Description:

Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:
● Assist admin with clerical tasks (P-Card reconcilement, organizing the office, paper/electronic filing, delivering documents)
● Assist admin with logistics (scheduling buses, scheduling pizza parties for debaters, etc)
● Assist program staff with administrative tasks pre and post-tournament (scanning, filing, assembling judge materials and nametags)
● Volunteer Recruitment: to include tabling, posting recruitment posters, connecting with relevant classes/campus groups
● Other duties as assigned
● Other duties aligned with applicant’s individual strengths

Requirements:

● Be comfortable working with youth and adults
● Be organized and possess excellent interpersonal skills; excellent customer relation skills needed
● Organized, timely communication needed
● Be 18 years of age or older – this is helpful, though most University students will qualify
● Some knowledge of debate, speech, or argumentation helpful but not required
● Be able to self direct, some projects will require working on your own after getting an overview
● Having these skills / experience is helpful – but we are willing to provide training and grow with a candidate

The MN Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for debate judges and hospitality volunteers for its upcoming high school debate tournaments.

No debate experience? No problem. We train volunteers at every tournament.

What Hospitality Volunteers Do:

● Greet & guide kids, coaches, and judges as they arrive at tournaments
● Answer questions and assist with wayfinding at tournament sites
● Distribute goody bags to students and thank-you gifts to our judges

What Judges Do:

● Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
● Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
● Choose the winner of each debate!
