Many organizations are flocking to implement implicit bias training and other activities to bring to light the structural racism present in our organizations. Although implicit bias training is the first step in creating awareness, it is important to get to the next step of behavior change. Implementation of bias mitigation strategies can be challenging to achieve. Simulation-Based Training (SBT) can be the bridge between creating awareness and moving to action.
This session will delve into SBT and opportunities for partnering with equity and inclusion training to promote health equity. The webinar will discuss how deliberate practice of both recognition of bias and implementation of strategies to mitigate bias can be integrated into implicit bias training. Real examples of the partnership between SBT and equity and inclusion training will be provided and participants will have an opportunity to begin developing facilitation skills for leading SBT deliberate practice conversations

This would include getting me ready for the day, helping me get set up for class and assisting me around campus. Art to Change the World is a Twin Cities-based nonprofit aiming to use art for social change. They developed the Coaching Project for a Better World to empower Minnesota’s diverse and divergent young thinkers and leaders. The nexus of art and science is where the power for change incubates.

The Opportunity
Three Youth Candidates are assigned one artist and one scientist coach. The three work symbiotically to develop and implement a social justice project which will engage the participation of from 50-100 community members. Three teams. All are paid. $1,200.00 per participant. $3,000.00 per team for project supplies. Apply for One of These Three Roles
1. Youth Candidate that will become the “Project Manager” – This person, who is under 30, will have a general idea of a social practice art project that will actively engage 50 to 100 community members. This idea will be centered around a social justice issue of their choosing.

2. Artist “Coach”- a professional artist that has a history of being engaged in social practice art and wants to both share their knowledge and learn from others in this project. This artist can be from the field of visual, dance, music, writing, audio, etc.

3. Scientist “Coach”- a professional in a scientific field that is interested in both sharing their knowledge and learning from others in the project. We are looking for a wide range of scientists: environmentalists, health- mental and physical, sociologists, chemists, technologists, computer, botanists, etc.

Indoor Mask Mandate in Effect at Augsburg

All students, staff, and faculty are required to wear face coverings in indoor campus spaces, except when eating in dining areas or when in one’s own residential unit or individual office with the door closed.. This applies to all U.S. Augsburg locations. (International Augsburg locations are following local protocols.) Masks or face coverings are not required outdoors.

Over the weekend of July 31-August 1, the regional case rates in both Hennepin and Ramsey counties moved to a “substantial” transmission rate (between 50 and 99.99 cases per 100,000 population over 7 days, as defined by the CDC). As a result, Augsburg reinstated the indoor face covering requirement, effective Tuesday, August 3.

Join Model UN in Chicago this Fall

Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American Model United Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.

In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.

The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to theUnited Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.

The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!

We will accept applications until September 1, 2021 or until the program fills.

Prerequisite: students must complete thePOL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.

All Welcome for Johnson & Johnson Vaccine in OGC

Augsburg is partnering with the People’s Center Clinic to provide Johnson & Johnson vaccines on campus, in the Oren Gateway Center, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The dates are during new student orientation Monday – Thursday, June 14 – 17, Saturday, June 19, and Monday, June 21.

This vaccine opportunity is open to all Augsburg students, staff, faculty, and your families and friends. If you know someone who still needs a vaccine, please inform them about this opportunity.

No appointment or insurance is necessary (though if you have insurance, please bring your insurance information). People interested in getting a vaccine must be at least 18 years old and bring a photo ID (e.g., driver’s license, passport, Augsburg ID, etc.). The People’s Center Clinic does not ask about citizenship status.

The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine requires only one dose. A person is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Please share this information with anyone 18 or older who may still need a vaccine.

The vaccine that will be provided at this clinic is the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which requires only one dose. A person is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

People interested in getting a vaccine on today should arrive at the People’s Center Clinic between 1 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. The time required to get the vaccine and complete the post-vaccination waiting period is about 20 to 30 minutes. If you have health insurance, please bring that information with you. If you do not have insurance, you can still get the vaccine; insurance is not required.

Applications are Now Open for the 2021-22 AugSTEM Scholars Program

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2021 (graduating by December ‘23)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 19 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 28 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Campus Box Closure/Suvey

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the digital survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 16 2021) we will be closing all student campus boxes unless otherwise notified. Before the fall semester starts we will reassign campus boxes to all residential students. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey ( https://forms.gle/7VW5CUfDmkzoHVTL6 ) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be keep your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall. If you do not fill out the survey, we will close your campus box and return to sender any mail in the box.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will be returned to sender or recycled. We can also only forward to US addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted (July 16 2021). Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Faculty Survey: Response Deadline is May 1

The Faculty Senate, Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Committee, and the Classroom and Presentation Spaces Working Group have collaborated to bring you a short survey. The purpose is to identify faculty teaching experiences supported by technology, identify technology needs, and gather information about classroom needs as we continue to adapt to COVID-related changes.

The results will be used to inform future planning and will be shared with the survey sponsors, including Faculty Senate, and all faculty. The responses are confidential and all findings are reported in the aggregate. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete and is due by Friday, May 1st.

Study Indigenous Peoples Around the World at Model UN this Fall

Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American Model United Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.

In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.

The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to the United Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.

The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!

Priority Application deadline is May 1, 2021 to apply on the Study Abroad/Away site.

Prerequisite: students must complete the POL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.

Google Maps in Augsburg.edu Returns

You may have recently received an error message when trying to access Google Maps while logged into your Augsburg account. It appears that while it may have been previously available, Augsburg did not have Google Maps turned “On” as a non-core app available for Augsburg.edu accounts. A likely change by Google seems to have corrected what they would see as unintentional access. During our investigation, we have kept the service “Off.”

Now we’ve turned it “On.” This is a good time to remind you that Google Maps does not fall under our Education terms of service so the privacy protections are the same as the commercial Google tools. Our Core Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Drive) fall under an education terms of service that includes FERPA protections. In other words, non-core apps like Google Maps will collect data like the commercial Google products so be aware of that. And we recommend not requiring students to use any non-core apps for coursework since there aren’t FERPA protections.

Dianne Detloff’s retirement celebration is on Thursday, May 6th from 2:30 – 3:30 PM.
Come with your memories, stories, appreciation and good wishes for Dianne.

With more than twenty years of dedicated service, Dianne has worked as the Administrative Program Coordinator in the Center for Wellness and Counseling (CWC). She has welcomed thousands of students seeking CWC services. In her position at CWC, she organized a multitude of wellbeing events, such as, the Annual CWC Health Fairs, blood drives with the Memorial Blood Center, and flu shot Clinics with Hennepin Health Care. Dianne provided the leadership for the Augsburg student EPIC program and was a mentor and supervisor for the students. Many students found meeting with the dogs from Paws for learning lowered their stress and would come to CWC or other locations on campus to be with the beloved dogs from Paws for Learning.

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

With the trend toward a more diverse workforce continuing, so are the ways we conduct business. In the past, most U.S. businesses functioned primarily within our borders. Today, globalization is proving to be a huge game changer for many companies, big and small. With globalization and increased immigration, the potential for misunderstandings in the workplace is really high. First, language differences may lead to miscommunication and misinterpretation. Second you fail to take into account significant cultural differences. For example, during a performance review, you provide constructive criticism to an employee with the intent of helping him improve his performance. Later on you learn that he quit his job because of the shame and loss of face your feedback caused. In this interactive Webinar, you will understand the impact of cultural differences in the workplace and learn strategies to bridge those differences effectively.

Sign up to be a volunteer at a vaccine event at People’s Center (425 20th Ave S).

Volunteers are needed Thursday, April 22 and Thursday, May 20. Shifts are 3.5 hours. Everyone who volunteers can either sign up to receive a vaccine or can give the opportunity to a loved one (Moderna). Volunteer tasks consist of directing people where to go, assisting people with form help and other activities on site.

TRIO McNair Scholars Program – Still Accepting Applications

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is still accepting applications for Fall 2021 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2022 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2022. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000+) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2022.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

MN Urban Debate League Team Places in Semifinals of Tournament of Champions

Minneapolis South High School’s debate partnership, Gabe Chang-Deutsch & Clara Conry, were Semifinalists in the Policy Debate section of the Tournament of Champions.

Conry & Chang-Deutsch debated students from Bellarmine Preparatory Academy in Tacoma, WA during the semifinal round of the tournament.

In response to COVID-19, the tournament was held entirely virtually.

The Tournament of Champions is hosted by the University of Kentucky. To qualify for the TOC, students must earn bids through strong performances at highly competitive tournaments during the season. Conry & Chang-Deutsch competed against many of the most competitive policy teams in the US, through octafinals, quarterfinals, and semifinals.

In policy debate, students across the nation research and prepare cases for the affirmative (pro) and negative (con) side of the same topic. The policy debate resolution debated at this year’s tournament was: Resolved: The United States federal government should enact substantial criminal justice reform in the United States in one or more of the following: forensic science, policing, sentencing.

South High School is a member of the Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University which provides academic competitive debate programming to Twin Cities middle and high school students. The mission of MNUDL is to empower students through competitive academic debate to become engaged learners, critical thinkers, and active global citizens who are effective advocates for themselves and their communities.

“Many of those served by the Health Commons are living on the streets of Minneapolis or are marginally housed. Katie figured out a way to continue to serve the community during the COVID-19 pandemic — she started seeing visitors outside, continuing to distribute hygiene kits and delivering food to encampments and to those who tested positive for COVID and were not allowed into the shelters. George Floyd used to visit the Augsburg Central Health Commons. Although Katie didn’t know him well, the continuing efforts of the Health Commons in the community are dedicated to the memory of George. The fight for justice will not end.”

“During these extraordinary times, Jenny has gone to extraordinary lengths to serve our students, faculty, and staff. Dianne Detloff’s retirement celebration is on Thursday, May 6th from 2:30 – 3:30 PM.
Come with your memories, stories, appreciation and good wishes for Dianne.

With more than twenty years of dedicated service, Dianne has worked as an Administrative Program Coordinator in the Center for Wellness and Counseling (CWC). She has welcomed thousands of students to CWC services. She provided leadership for annual CWC Health Fairs, provided leadership for the Augsburg student EPIC program, brought Paws for Learning to campus, organized blood donations with the Memorial Blood Center, arranged flu clinics, and has created a multitude of student programs and events.

STEM Peer Mentoring is a student-led mentoring program that focuses on providing support to First-years and Sophomores as they navigate their academic and professional careers in STEM.

Mentors in STEM Peer Mentoring can play a pivotal role in establishing the success of beginning STEM students. If you’re a rising Junior or Senior in a STEM major, enjoy being a leader and/or have lots of advice & resources to share — this is for you!! (Transfer students are also welcome!)

“Michael’s many research projects focus on “green chemistry”: how to make useful chemicals in ways that protect the environment, are affordable and are accessible. In 2019 he won the American Chemical Society Environmental Improvement Award for developing “Sustainable Chemistry at Augsburg University inspired by the Hagfors Center for Science, Business, and Religion.” Students actively seek to join his research because they resonate with the green chemistry goals. Michael provides a crucial research experience for students, and students have an opportunity to make a difference with their work.”

The final All Hands Meeting of the 2020-21 year will be Thursday, May 6 at 9 a.m. The meeting will be held as a hybrid event, both in Hoversten Chapel and via Zoom. While we normally hold a longer, strategy-focused All-Hands Planning Summit at the end of the year, we have decided to move our summit conversation to the fall and use this opportunity to report on the significant accomplishments of the 2020-21 academic year.

Join Model UN in Chicago This Fall

Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American Model United Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.

In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.

The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to the United Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.

The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!

Priority Application deadline is May 1, 2021 to apply on the Study Abroad/Away site.

Prerequisite: students must complete the POL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.
